107. Novel cationically polymerized epoxy/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) polymers showing a shape memory effect

Abstract

Novel segmented and covalently crosslinked epoxy/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) polymers, showing a shape memory effect are presented and characterized in this work. While a cationically polymerized cycloaliphatic epoxy resin form the required network to store the original shape for the shape recovery process in form of stresses in the deformed shape, we observed the formation of crystalline interactions of the PCL depending on its concentration in the crosslinked polymer. A minimum of PCL concentration is required to act as switchable phase and form crystalline interactions, required for the temporary shape fixation. The material properties of the epoxy/PCL polymers as well as the crystallization of the PCL and the shape memory characteristics are examined in this work.

Abstract

The role and underlying mechanisms of rosiglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-{gamma}) agonist, on myocardial infarction are poorly understood. We investigated the effects of this PPAR-{gamma} agonist on the expression of tissue factor (TF), a primary molecule for thrombosis, and elucidated its underlying mechanisms. The PPAR-{gamma} agonist inhibited TF expression in response to TNF-{alpha} in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, human monocytic leukemia cell line, and human umbilical arterial smooth muscle cells. The overexpression of TF was mediated by increased phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), which was blocked by the PPAR-{gamma} agonist. The effective MAPK differed depending on each cell type. Luciferase and ChIP assays showed that transcription factor, activator protein-1 (AP-1), was a pivotal target of the PPAR-{gamma} agonist to lower TF transcription. Intriguingly, two main drugs for drug-eluting stent, paclitaxel or rapamycin, significantly exaggerated thrombin-induced TF expression, which was also effectively blocked by the PPAR-{gamma} agonist in all cell types. This PPAR-{gamma} agonist did not impair TF pathway inhibitor (TFPI) in three cell types. 109. Waterborne polyurethane nanocomposites having shape memory effects

Abstract

UV curable waterborne polyurethane/silica nanocomposites were designed and synthesized with functionalized silicas, where the functionalization was made with allyl isocyanate. The incorporated silica particles gave triple effects of multifunctional chemical cross-links, reinforcing fillers, and stress relaxation retarders. Consequently, functionalized silica incorporated into the polymer chains showed significantly improved mechanical and thermal properties than the simple addition of unmodified silica. Notably, over 99% shape fixity and shape recovery with minimum cyclic hysteresis were obtained for the repeated cycles at 1% loading of the modified silica.

Abstract

Thermoresponsive polyurethane (PU)-silica nanocomposites were synthesized by incorporating silica particles as multifunctional cross-linkers into the PU via sol-gel reactions. At 2 wt% silica, the composites showed over 99% shape fixity and shape recovery up to the 4th thermomechanical cycle along with outstanding mechanical properties in their rubbery as well as glass state. The incorporated nano-sized silica particles gave dual effects of multifunctional chemical cross-links and reinforcing fillers. The properties were favorably compared with those of uncross-linked PU and conventionally cross-linked PU.

124. Hydrolytic stability and physical properties of waterborne polyurethane based on hydrolytically stable polyol

Abstract

New type of polyester polyol with alkyl side groups, viz. poly(2,4-diethyl-1,5-pentamethylene adipate) glycol (PDPAD) was synthesized and applied to improve the hydrolytic stability of polyurethane dispersions (PUD), and the results were compared with conventional poly(tetrarnethylene adipate) glycol (PTAD)-based PUD. It was found that PDPAD-based PUD gave much higher hydrolytic stability in spite of great water swell than the PTAD-based PUD which showed higher hardness, modulus, and tensile strength. Tailor-made properties were possibly obtained by combining the two types of polyol.
