The use of phytochemicals is gaining increasing attention for treating cancer morbidity with minimal burden side effects. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities of Pinus roxburghii branch (P. roxburghii) and Nauplius graveolens (N. graveolens) extracts in vitro. Cell viability was estimated using MTT assay. DNA fragmentation was determined to detect apoptotic pathway initiation. Mechanistically, the apoptotic pathway was tracked by estimating the relative mRNA expression levels of the Bcl-2, Bax, Cas3, NF-κB, and PI3k genes by qRT-PCR. P. roxburghii exhibited moderate antioxidant activity, while N. graveolens possessed highly significant (p < 0.05) scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS assays. HPLC analysis demonstrated that catechin and chlorogenic acid were the predominant polyphenolic compounds in P. roxburghii and N. graveolens, respectively. The P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts inhibited the viability of HCT-116 cells with IC50 values of 30.6 µg mL−1 and 26.5 µg mL−1, respectively. DNA fragmentation analysis showed that the proposed extracts induced apoptosis in HCT-116 cells. Moreover, the IC50 doses of the selected extracts significantly (p < 0.05) upregulated Bax and cleaved Cas-3, and downregulated Bcl-2, NF-κB, and PI3k genes versus the GAPDH gene as a housekeeping gene in comparison to the control group. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was raised upon treatment. The mentioned extracts exhibited antimicrobial action against all tested bacteria and fungi. The highest antibacterial effect was recorded against E. coli, with inhibition zones of 12.0 and 11.2 mm for P. roxburghii and N. graveolens, respectively. On the other hand, the highest antifungal action was registered for Penicillium verrucosum and A. niger, with inhibition zones of 9.8 and 9.2 mm for the tested extracts, respectively. In conclusion, the outcomes of this study indicate that P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts could potentially be used as anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal agents.

The present study aimed to evaluate the chemopreventive potential of Pinus roxburghii branch (P. roxburghii) and Nauplius graveolens (N. graveolens) extracts against human colorectal cancer (CRC) induced by C26 murine cells in a BALB/c mouse model. Real-time qRT-PCR was used to evaluate the apoptotic pathway by measuring the relative mRNA expression levels of the Bcl-2, Bax, Cas3, NF-κB, and PI3k genes. At the termination of the 30-day period, blood samples were collected to assay the biomarkers. The results showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the levels of TGF-β, CEA, CA19-9, malondialdehyde, ALT, AST, ALP, urea, and creatinine in the positive control compared to the negative control group. In addition, the glutathione reductase activity and total antioxidant activity were reduced in the positive control compared to the negative control. The biomarkers mentioned above were restored to almost normal levels after administering a safe dose (1/10) of a lethal dose of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts. Administration of one-tenth of the LD50 of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts caused a significant upregulation of the expression of Bax and Cas-3 and downregulation of the Bcl-2, NF-ĸB, and PI3k genes vs. the GAPDH gene as a housekeeping gene compared to the control group. Furthermore, the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increased upon treatment. After administration of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens at a safe dose (1/10) of a lethal dose, the results showed improvement in both body weight gain and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in tumor volume. Histopathological changes supported these improvements. Conclusively, the research outputs show that P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts can be utilized as potential chemopreventive agents for CRC treatment by stimulating cancer cell apoptosis and suppressing CRC survival and proliferation.

The enhancement of energy systems in industrial zones is attracting the attention of researchers from all over the world. At the same time, optimization and advancement in heat recovery systems are now generating major interest in the energy sector. In this context, the present study suggests a new multiple heat recovery system should be applied to an industrial thermal peeling press machine. The new system consists of multiple sources of energy: the heat excess in the chimney, the exhaust gas of the chimney, and the exhaust gas of the boiler. To proceed with testing the potential of the suggested system, a hydraulic thermal peel press machine in the wood industry undergoes different tests to achieve the best configuration that will enable this machine to reach its operational temperature when heating. Five test configurations are proposed, designed, and applied experimentally on this machine. Many parameters were effective during the experimental tests, such as water flow rate, ambient air temperature, and initial water temperature. It was found that the application of the multiple heat recovery system increases the rate of heating from around 7 °C/min to around 13 °C/min. In terms of energy and economy, the "chimney + boiler only" configuration proved to be the best system to apply during the fall and winter seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a strong belief that Allah Almighty could reveal His existence by encoding the laws of nature and their fundamental constants in the Quran with impeccable precision. However, the mathematical frameworks and patterns embedded within the Quranic text to reveal scientific laws and constants may contain minor deviations in numerical values to empower personal exploration, accommodate diverse interpretations, and strengthen faith. This theory is based on the fact that the Quran is the word of Allah Almighty. Consequently, one would anticipate finding evidence suggesting a divine origin. Many scholars and researchers have suggested that this evidence can be found in the mathematical structure of the Quran through patterns, numerical codes, and other mathematical features within the text that are too complex to be simply attributed to human authorship. Therefore, it is believed that the Quran contains within its structure a mathematical encoding of all physical laws and constants. Verses like 20.98, which state, "He encompasses all things in knowledge," are quoted as evidence. According to this perspective, the Quran is assumed to incorporate mathematical miracles, indicating a potential correspondence between its text and the underlying order of the universe. This theory reveals many mathematical frameworks illustrating how the Quran embeds scientific knowledge. These include the identification of frequent occurrences of the golden ratio within the Quranic text and the manifestation of the golden ratio in the human body, alongside the determination of key celestial parameters such as the length of the solar year. Furthermore, this theory uncovers a numerical link between the Quran and fundamental scientific constants, notably the universal gravitational constant, the speed of light, and the Planck constant. Moreover, this theory utilizes numerical analysis to offer a compelling rationale for why the numbers 28 and 114 are used to represent the total number of Arabic letters and chapters in the Quran, respectively. Finally, this theory highlights the Quran's remarkable mathematical architecture, offering indisputable evidence of its divine composition. DFT and TD-DFT studies of B3LYP/6–31 g(d,p) with the D2 version of Grimme's dispersion are used to examine the adsorption of a CH2O molecule on Be12O12 and MBe12O12 nano-cages (M = K, Mn, or Cu atom). The energy gap for Be12O12 was 8.210 eV, while the M encapsulation decreased its value to 0.685–1.568 eV, whereas the adsorption of the CH2O gas decreased the Eg values for Be12O12 and CuBe12O12 to 4.983 and 0.876 eV and increased its values for KBe12O12 and MnBe12O12 to 1.286 and 1.516 eV, respectively. The M encapsulation enhanced the chemical adsorption of CH2O gas with the surface of Be12O12. The UV-vis spectrum of the Be12O12 nano-cage was dramatically affected by the M encapsulation as well as the adsorption of the CH2O gas. In addition, the adsorption energies and the electrical sensitivity of the Be12O12 as well as the MBe12O12 nano-cages to CH2O gas could be manipulated with an external electric field. Our results may be fruitful for utilizing Be12O12 as well as MBe12O12 nano-cages as candidate materials for removing and sensing formaldehyde gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study was conducted to prepare nano-chitosan particles (CN) by ultrafine grinding from crude chitosan powder (CC) using a ball mill with 130 numbers of zirconia beads in range from 0.5 to 1.5 mm diameter (75 beads 0.5 mm diameter, 30 beads 1.0 mm diameter and 25 beads 1.5 mm diameter). In addition, physical and rheological properties of chitosan solutions were determined. The results revealed that ultrafine grinding has effectively milled the chitosan particles to nanoscale. Prepared chitosan nanoparticles were characterized by devices X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Zetasizer particle sizes and Zeta potential of chitosan particles (after milling for 30, 60 and 90 minutes). The particle size of nano-chitosan was distributed in a range of 250-600 nm. with a polydispersity index use as an anti-oxidant and antimicrobial with reducing the amount used to deliver the desired purpose. Additional research is required to further investigate the potential value-added utilization of these chitosan derivatives in improving the quality and safety of some food products.

This overall process deals with evaluating the performance of silver nanoparticles, synthesized from sodium caseinate (SC) as green biological active agent, in comparison with widely produced from carboxymethyl cellulose, other carbohydrates (oxidized nanocellulose fibres (OC) and starch (St)). The TGA, FTIR and TEM, as well as its antimicrobial activities toward pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in addition to the yeast strain Candida albicans NRRL Y-477 were examined. In addition, with regard to their anti-tumour activity, the evaluation was studied via many cancer cell lines against RPE1 (normal retina cell line). The results revealed that the SC–Ag(I) and CMC–Ag(I) complexes were formed in six- and five-membered chelate rings, respectively, as nanoparticles, while linear chelation structure was formed in case of OC–Ag(I) and St–Ag(I) complexes. The complexation of SC with Ag(I) ions was recommended as promising stable and antimicrobial agent, with lower free Ag(I) ions and particle size than other Ag-complexes. Moreover, it provided anti-tumour activity of most tested cell lines (in vitro), with the following sequence HCT116 > PC3 > HePG 2 > MCF-7 > A549 with IC50 and IC90 values of 25.8 and 54.73 µg ml−1, 45.1 and 66.7 µg ml−1, 64.3 and 110.7 µgml−1, 71.4 and 114.8 µgml−1 and 80.1 and 127.7 µgml−1, respectively. The promising effect of SC–Ag complex was also clear from its selective index versus RPE1 (normal retina cell line).

The current study investigated the cytotoxic effect of ten sulfonamide-derived isatins, following molecular hybridization, based on the association principles, on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 and Huh7 cell lines, compared for safety using human normal retina pigmented epithelial (RPE-1) cells. The ten compounds showed variable in vitro cytotoxicity on HepG2 and Huh7 cells, using the MTT assay. Four compounds (4/10) were highly cytotoxic to both HepG2 and HuH7. However, only 3 of these 4 were of the highest safety margin on RPE-1 cells in vitro and in the in vivo acute (14-day) oral toxicity study. These later, superior three compounds’ structures are 3-hydroxy-3-(2-oxo-2-(p-tolyl)ethyl)-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-2-one (3a), N-(4-(2-(2-oxo-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-3-ylidene)acetyl)phenyl)acetamide (4b), and N-(3-(2-(2-oxo-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-3-ylidene)acetyl)phenyl)acetamide (4c). The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the tested compounds (3a, 4b, and 4c) on HepG2 cells were approximately 16.8, 44.7, and 39.7 μM, respectively. The 3a, 4b, and 4c compounds significantly decreased the angiogenic marker epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) level and that was further confirmed via molecular docking inside the EFGR active site (PDB: 1M17). The binding free energies ranged between −19.21 and −21.74 Kcal/mol compared to Erlotinib (−25.65 Kcal/mol). The most promising compounds, 3a, 4b, and 4c, showed variable anticancer potential on “hallmarks of cancer”, significant cytotoxicity, and apoptotic anti-angiogenic and anti-invasive effects, manifested as suppression of Bcl-2, urokinase plasminogen activation, and heparanase expression in HepG2-treated cells’ lysate, compared to non-treated HepG2 cells. In conclusion, compound “3a” is highly comparable to doxorubicin regarding cell cycle arrest at G2/M, the pre-G0 phases and early and late apoptosis induction and is comparable to Erlotinib regarding binding to EGFR active site. Therefore, the current study could suggest that compound “3a” is, hopefully, the most safe and active synthesized isatin sulfonamide derivative for HCC management.

Chronic, non-healing wounds are a significant cause of global morbidity and mortality, and strategies to improve delayed wound closure represent an unmet clinical need. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) can enhance wound healing, but exploitation of this finding is challenging due to the complexity and instability of these heterogeneous lipoproteins. The responsiveness of primary human neonatal keratinocytes, and neonatal and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) to HDL was confirmed by cholesterol efflux, but promotion of ‘scrape’ wound healing occurred only in primary human neonatal (HDFn) and adult fibroblasts (HDFa). Treatment of human fibroblasts with HDL induced multiple changes in the expression of small non-coding microRNA sequences, determined by microchip array, including hsa-miR-6727-5p. Intriguingly, levels of hsa-miR-6727-5p increased in HDFn, but decreased in HDFa, after exposure to HDL. Delivery of a hsa-miR-6727-5p mimic elicited repression of different target genes in HDFn (ZNF584) and HDFa (EDEM3, KRAS), and promoted wound closure in HDFn. By contrast, a hsa-miR-6727-5p inhibitor promoted wound closure in HDFa. We conclude that HDL treatment exerts distinct effects on the expression of hsa-miR-6727-5p in neonatal and adult fibroblasts, and that this is a sequence which plays differential roles in wound healing in these cell types, but cannot replicate the myriad effects of HDL.

The study aims to identify the relationship between social support and the adaptation of students of the Faculty of Physical Education at Yarmouk University to the university environment. The study relied on a descriptive-analytical method. A questionnaire was applied to a random sample of (287) male and female students from the Faculty of Physical Education. The results of the study showed that the level of social support among students of the Faculty of Physical Education was high. In addition, the study showed that the level of adaptation of the students of the Faculty of Physical Education to the university environment was at a high level. Moreover, the study revealed that there are statistical differences in the level of social support and in the level of students' adaptation due to gender and place of residence in favor of males and city, respectively.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate different biological activities of Trichoderma viride fungus (Family Hypocreaceae). Trichoderma viride isolated for the first time from the cucumber soil (rhizosphere). It was tested as antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer agent. Trichoderma viride from the cucumber soil (rhizosphere) caused inhibition of the mycelial growth of Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii. Also, the alcoholic extract of the fungal mycelia proved a potent antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens. In addition, it exhibited a significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporium, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum at 100 µg/disc. Study of the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the volatile constituents had been done. The in vitro antioxidant, anticancer and antiviral activities of the isolated proteins, and carbohydrates were determined. Furthermore, the volatile constituents were isolated from fresh mycelia of Trichoderma viride and subjected to GC/MS analysis. Total protein (10%), carbohydrate (19.57%), steroidal (13.95%) and triterpenoidal content (38.34%) were determined in the alcoholic extract of Trichoderma viride mycelia. In conclusion, this fungus showed antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial effects. Further studies must be done to identify the molecules responsible for its effect and to consider its application in the pharmacological and medicinal purposes.

Calcification in lung lesions includes many differential diagnoses and usually indicates a benign course. However, its interpretation is challenging due to many etiologies. Radiological visualization of extensive calcification in bronchogenic carcinoma is not familiar and may cause confusion and misdiagnosis; however, it may be rarely seen and has also been rarely reported. We documented a case of lung adenocarcinoma with extensive calcification in computed tomography (CT) of chest and diagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung by bronchoscopic lung biopsy.

Objective: This work aimed for using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) to map the bronchial tree and assess the exact site, direction, airway findings and bronchial measurements to guide trans-bronchial lung biopsy from an inaccessible lung lesion. Patients and methods: This study was carried on 26 patients. It was conducted in the Radiology Department, in collaboration with Chest Department, in the period from January 2015 to April 2016. All patients were subjected to Virtual Bronchographic (VB) examination and Trans-Bronchial lung biopsy (in selected cases guided by the VB results). Results: In this study, MSCT-VB maps guided the fiber-optic bronchoscopy in 30 bronchial lesions in 26 patients to the proper sampling site for different lung lesions with success rate 100% and CT maps were done, reaching 3rd to 7th order bronchial generation with mean distance from central bronchi was 21.3 mm and mean target bronchial diameter was 1.9 mm. Right sided lesions encountered in 57.7% and left sided lesions in 42.3% with the most common segmental affection was the right upper lobe in 36.7% of bronchial lesions and the apico-posterior subsegment of left upper lobe in 23.3% of lesions, then planning according to the site of the lesion in relation to the bronchial tree in the VB was done. Histopathological assessment was done with 61.5% neoplastic lesions and 38.5% inflammatory lesions. Conclusion: Multiplanar reconstruction images together with virtual bronchographic images were accurate in the detection of lesion’s site, depiction of degree of narrowing, and distal visualization of airways. This CT map should be used to guide bronchoscopy or to direct trans-bronchial needle biopsy to guarantee positive histopathological results.
