101. From shear to veer: theory, statistics, and practical application.

Abstract

In the past several years, wind veer -- sometimes called "directional shear" -- has begun to attract attention due to its effects on wind turbines and their production, particularly as the length of manufactured turbine blades has increased. Meanwhile, applicable meteorological theory has not progressed significantly beyond idealized cases for decades, though veer's effect on the wind speed profile has been recently revisited. On the other hand the shear exponent (α) is commonly used in wind energy for vertical extrapolation of mean wind speeds, as well as being a key parameter for wind turbine load calculations and design standards. In this work we connect the oft-used shear exponent with veer, both theoretically and for practical use. We derive relations for wind veer from the equations of motion, finding the veer to be composed of separate contributions from shear and vertical gradients of crosswind stress. Following from the theoretical derivations, which are neither limited to the surface layer nor constrained by assumptions about mixing length or turbulent diffusivities, we establish simplified relations between the wind veer and shear exponent for practical use in wind energy. We also elucidate the source of commonly observed stress--shear misalignment and its contribution to veer, noting that our new forms allow for such misalignment. The connection between shear and veer is further explored through analysis of one-dimensional (single-column) Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes solutions, where we confirm our theoretical derivations as well as the dependence of mean shear and veer on surface roughness and atmospheric boundary layer depth in terms of respective Rossby numbers. Finally we investigate the observed behavior of shear and veer across different sites and flow regimes (including forested, offshore, and hilly terrain cases) over heights corresponding to multi-megawatt wind turbine rotors, also considering the effects of atmospheric stability. From this we find empirical forms for the probability distribution of veer during high-veer (stable) conditions and for the variability in veer conditioned on wind speed. Analyzing observed joint probability distributions of α and veer, we compare the two simplified forms we derived earlier and adapt them to ultimately arrive at more universally applicable equations to predict the mean veer in terms of observed (i.e., conditioned on) shear exponent; lastly, the limitations, applicability, and behavior of these forms are discussed along with their use and further developments for both meteorology and wind energy. Abstract

Simulations are widely used to predict noise emissions from traffic, railroad, aircraft, and wind farms and for sound field control. The latter employs multiple sources interacting and it requires accurate phase information. Acoustic models require precise characterization of the medium properties. The logarithmic profile is one of the most commonly used forms to model the wind speed. However, this profile is accurate only in neutral conditions, i.e., when there is not heat flux at the surface. The conventionally neutral boundary layer (CNBL) is the most frequently occurring neutral regime. In this case, the logarithmic profile underestimates the wind speed. This paper analyses the effect that this modelling error has on the sound field close to the ground, for near-ground sources. The first section introduces an approximation of the wind and temperature profiles in such a regime. Afterwards, the sound fields corresponding to the logarithmic profile, a representative CNBL profile, and three more test cases are simulated using the Crank-Nicholson parabolic equation; these are compared employing different metrics. The difference in wind speed introduces a phase error that increases with distance. Moreover, wind speed underestimations also lead to underpredictions of the energy refracted downward.

Abstract

The Global Wind Atlas (GWA) provides high-resolution databases and maps of the wind resource for all land points within 200 km of the coastline, excluding Antarctica. The GWA is used to identify and understand the global, national, regional, and local potential for wind energy and to guide energy specialists, policymakers, and planners in the transition to a sustainable energy system. This information is vital to ensuring the growth of wind energy, helping to transition to a sustainable energy system, which will mitigate climate change and meet the world’s need for reliable, affordable, and clean energy. The GWA uses the established numerical wind atlas methodology to downscale coarse-resolution wind data to microscale, using linearized flow modeling and high-resolution topographic data. There have been three versions of the GWA, each using mesoscale model data at successively higher spatial resolution. A website and Geographic Information System (GIS) files support quick and in-depth analysis. Validation data and analysis, using measurements from tall masts located worldwide, are also provided through the web application. The development process of the GWA involves a dialogue between meteorological modelers, wind energy development experts, web designers, and representatives of the end-users to provide accurate data in a dynamic and relevant way. This article outlines the general method, specific development, and application of the Global Wind Atlas.

116. Wind Retrieval from Constellations of Small SAR Satellites: Potential for Offshore Wind Resource Assessment

Abstract

The planning of offshore wind energy projects requires wind observations over long periods for the establishment of wind speed distributions. In the marine environment, high-quality in situ observations are sparse and restricted to point locations. Numerical modeling is typically used to determine the spatial variability of the wind resource. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations from satellites can be used for retrieval of wind fields over the ocean at a high spatial resolution. The recent launch of constellations of small SAR satellites by private companies will improve the sampling of SAR scenes significantly over the coming years compared with the current sampling rates offered by multi-purpose SAR missions operated by public space agencies. For the first time, wind fields are retrieved from a series of StriX SAR scenes delivered by Synspective (Japan) and also from Sentinel-1 scenes delivered by the European Space Agency. The satellite winds are compared with wind speed observations from the FINO3 mast in the North Sea. This leads to root-mean-square errors of 1.4–1.8 m s-1 and negative biases of −0.4 m s-1 and −1.0 m s-1, respectively. Although the Geophysical Model Functions (GMF) applied for wind retrievals have not yet been tuned for StriX SAR observations, the wind speed accuracy is satisfactory. Through conditional sampling, we estimate the wind resource from current and future SAR sampling scenarios where the number of SAR satellites in orbit is increasing over time. We find that hourly samples are needed to fully capture the diurnal wind speed variability at the site investigated. A combination of SAR samples from current missions with samples from clusters of small SAR satellites can yield the necessary number of wind speed samples for accurate wind resource estimation. Abstract

Credit scoring methods summanse information on credit applicants. An assessment of creditworthiness is derived from this summary. This thesis is concerned with statistical methods of credit scoring. Much of the existing literature on credit scoring is concerned with comparing the predictive power of a wide variety of classification techniques. However, much of the published work concludes that classifier performance on credit data is relatively insensitive to the choice of statistical technique. Consequently, the techniques used in commercial credit scoring have remained broadly similar during recent years. This thesis investigates credit scoring from a more fundamental level, by considering the formulation of the credit problem. A review of the credit literature is given, focusing on areas that have been subjected to much recent research activity. Details of the data sets used throughout this thesis are provided and analysed using techniques common to the credit industry. Methods that capitalise on the uncertainty and flexibility in the definitions of the classes used to represent 'good' and 'bad' credit risks are proposed. Firstly, a class of models is described that permits the choice of class definition to be deferred until the time at which the classification is required. Secondly, a strategy for choosing a suitable definition which optimises some external criterion is introduced. In addition, an approach is presented that combats classifier deterioration resulting from the evolution of the underlying populations. This thesis is essentially concerned with the uncertainties and change inherent in credit scoring. We present novel ways in which these properties may be incorporated in the formulation of the credit problem.
