International audience; The ability of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, to proliferate within the human host depends on its invasion of erythrocytes. Erythrocyte binding-like (EBL) proteins play crucial roles in the attachment of merozoites to human erythrocytes by binding to specific receptors on the cell surface. In this study, we have carried out a bioinformatics analysis of the three EBL proteins EBA-140, EBA-175 and EBA-181 and show that they contain a large amount of intrinsic disorder in particular within the RIII-V domains. The functional role of these domains has so far not been identified, although antibodies raised against these regions were shown to inhibit parasite invasion. Here, we obtain a more complete structural and dynamic view of the EBL proteins by focusing on the biophysical characterization of a smaller construct of the RIII-V regions of EBA-181 (EBA-181945-1097). We show using a number of techniques that EBA-181945-1097 is intrinsically disordered, and we obtain a detailed structural and dynamic characterization of the protein at atomic resolution using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our results show that EBA-181945-1097 is essentially a statistical coil with the presence of several turn motifs and does not possess transiently populated secondary structures as is common for many intrinsically disordered proteins that fold via specific, pre-formed molecular recognition elements.

International audience; We report here on a first study using synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy and imaging to investigate HT1080 human fibrosarcoma cells grown onto different-aged type I collagen networks. Spectral images were analyzed with k-means and fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithms. K-means delineated tumor cells from their surrounding collagen networks and the latter as a function of age mainly due to specific changes in the sugar absorption region. The FCM analysis gave a better nuance of the spectral images. A progression of the biochemical information was observed upon going from the cellular compartments to the pericellular contact regions and to the intact collagens of the different age groups. Two spectral markers based on sugar and protein bands via the intensity ratio (I 1032 ∕I 1655) and band area ratio (A sugar ∕A amide II), showed an increase in advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) with age. A clear-separation of the three age groups was obtained for spectra originating from the peripheral contact areas mainly due to changes in protein band intensities. The above-described markers decreased to constant levels for the three conditions indicating a masking of the biochemical information. These results hold promises to better understand the impact of age on tumor progression processes while highlighting new markers of the tumor cell invasion front.

International audience; Current transgenic methodology developed for mosquitoes has not been applied widely to the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, which has proved more difficult to genetically manipulate than other mosquito species and dipteran insects. In this protocol, we describe PhiC31-mediated site-specific integration of transgenes into the genome of A. gambiae. The PhiC31 system has many advantages over 'classical' transposon-mediated germline transformation systems, because it allows integration of large transgenes at specific, characterized genomic locations. Starting from a general protocol, we have optimized steps from embryo collection to co-injection of transgene-containing plasmid and in vitro-produced PhiC31 integrase mRNA. We also provide tips for screening transgenic larvae. The outlined procedure provides robust transformation in A. gambiae, resulting in homozygous transgenic lines in approximately 2-3 months.

Background: Through the World Health Assembly Resolution, 'Health of Migrants', the international community has identified migrant health as a priority. Recommendations for general hospital care for international migrants in receiving-countries have been put forward by the Migrant Friendly Hospital Initiative; adaptations of these recommendations specific to maternity care have yet to be elucidated and validated. We aimed to develop a questionnaire measuring migrant-friendly maternity care (MFMC) which could be used in a range of maternity care settings and countries.Methods: This study was conducted in four stages. First, questions related to migrant friendly maternity care were identified from existing questionnaires including the Migrant Friendliness Quality Questionnaire, developed in Europe to capture recommended general hospital care for migrants, and the Mothers In a New Country (MINC) Questionnaire, developed in Australia and revised for use in Canada to capture the maternity care experiences of migrant women, and combined to create an initial MFMC questionnaire. Second, a Delphi consensus process in three rounds with a panel of 89 experts in perinatal health and migration from 17 countries was undertaken to identify priority themes and questions as well as to clarify wording and format. Third, the draft questionnaire was translated from English to French and Spanish and back-translated and subsequently culturally validated (assessed for cultural appropriateness) by migrant women. Fourth, the questionnaire was piloted with migrant women who had recently given birth in Montreal, Canada.Results: A 112-item questionnaire on maternity care from pregnancy, through labour and birth, to postpartum care, and including items on maternal socio-demographic, migration and obstetrical characteristics, and perceptions of care, has been created - the Migrant Friendly Maternity Care Questionnaire (MFMCQ) - in three languages (English, French and Spanish). It is completed in 45 minutes via interview administration several months post-birth.Conclusions: A 4-stage process of questionnaire development with international experts in migrant reproductive health and research resulted in the MFMCQ, a questionnaire measuring key aspects of migrant-sensitive maternity care. International audience; The splicing of the microtubule-associated protein Tau is regulated during development and is found to be deregulated in a growing number of pathological conditions such as myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1), in which a reduced number of isoforms is expressed in the adult brain. DM1 is caused by a dynamic and unstable CTG repeat expansion in the DMPK gene, resulting in an RNA bearing long CUG repeats (n > 50) that accumulates in nuclear foci and sequesters CUG-binding splicing factors of the muscleblind-like (MBNL) family, involved in the splicing of Tau pre-mRNA among others. However, the precise mechanism leading to Tau mis-splicing and the role of MBNL splicing factors in this process are poorly understood. We therefore used new Tau minigenes that we developed for this purpose to determine how MBNL1 and MBNL2 interact to regulate Tau exon 2 splicing. We demonstrate that an intronic region 250 nucleotides downstream of Tau exon 2 contains cis-regulatory splicing enhancers that are sensitive to MBNL and that bind directly to MBNL1. Both MBNL1 and MBNL2 act as enhancers of Tau exon 2 inclusion. Intriguingly, the interaction of MBNL1 and MBNL2 is required to fully reverse the mis-splicing of Tau exon 2 induced by the trans-dominant effect of long CUG repeats, similar to the DM1 condition. In conclusion, both MBNL1 and MBNL2 are involved in the regulation of Tau exon 2 splicing and the mis-splicing of Tau in DM1 is due to the combined inactivation of both. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. ISBN 978-1-4673-4953-6; International audience; In large SoCs, managing the effects of soft-errors in flip-flops is essential, however, selective mitigation is necessary to minimize the area and power costs. The identification of the optimal set of flip-flops to protect typically requires compute-intensive fault-injection campaigns. We present new techniques which group similar flip-flops into clusters to significantly reduce the number of fault injections. The number of required fault injections can be significantly lower than the total number of flip-flops and in one industrial design with over 100,000 flip-flops, by simulating only 2,100 fault injections, the technique identified a set of 4.1% of the flip-flops, which when protected, reduced the critical failure rate by a factor of 7x.

International audience; This chapter focuses on the question of collective action addressing the human dimension of conservation: ethical, cultural, and social. The first part of the chapter explains the five fundamental paradigms of collective action that underpin both lay and academic discourses on action for conservation. The paradigms are government paradigm, co-ordination paradigm, revolution paradigm, governance paradigm, and minority action paradigm. The second part of the chapter provides an illustration of such clarification. It introduces current controversies about community based conservation in Africa-more particularly, in East Africa's Maasailand-and show how the five-paradigms model proposed can shed light on them. The chapter ends with a discussion of some possible misunderstandings hindering the effort to work on collective action across conservation biology and social sciences, and offers some suggestions for further learning and research.

High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the warm absorber in the nearby quasar, MR2251-178 (z = 0.06398) is presented. The observations were carried out in 2011 using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer, with net exposure times of approximately 400 ks each. A multitude of absorption lines from C to Fe are detected, revealing at least 3 warm absorbing components ranging in ionization parameter from log(��/erg cm s^-1) = 1-3 and with outflow velocities < 500 km/s. The lowest ionization absorber appears to vary between the Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, which implies a radial distance of between 9-17 pc from the black hole. Several broad soft X-ray emission lines are strongly detected, most notably from He-like Oxygen, with FWHM velocity widths of up to 10000 km/s, consistent with an origin from Broad Line Region (BLR) clouds. In addition to the warm absorber, gas partially covering the line of sight to the quasar appears to be present, of typical column density N_H = 10^23 cm^-2. We suggest that the partial covering absorber may arise from the same BLR clouds responsible for the broad soft X-ray emission lines. Finally the presence of a highly ionised outflow in the iron K band from both 2002 and 2011 Chandra HETG observations appears to be confirmed, which has an outflow velocity of -15600 \pm 2400 km/s. However a partial covering origin for the iron K absorption cannot be excluded, resulting from low ionization material with little or no outflow velocity., 13 figures, 7 tables. International audience; Reliability is a growing concern in complex embed- ded systems. There is an increasing need to understand the failure modes and the overall reliability characteristics of large SoCs which are built using IP components from diverse sources. IP providers must be able to specify the way silicon failures (e.g. single bit upsets, permanent faults) affect the operation of their IP components. This is especially challenging for providers of soft IP because the designs are often extremely configurable and the high-level failure mechanisms (e.g. interrupts, reboots, etc.) must be expressed independently of the underlying implementation technology (e.g. FPGA, ASIC, etc.). In this paper, we show how a standard modelling format called RIIF (Reliability Information Interchange Format) can be used to specify the failure modes of complex IP components including a worked example based on a processor core

International audience; We construct full broad-band models in an analysis of Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) (z ≤ 0.2) with exposures >50 ks and with greater than 30 000 counts in order to study their iron line profiles. This results in a sample of 46 objects and 84 observations. After a full modelling of the broad-band Suzaku and Swift-Burst Alert Telescope data (0.6-100 keV), we find complex warm absorption is present in 59 per cent of the objects in this sample which has a significant bearing upon the derived Fe K region parameters. Meanwhile 35 per cent of the 46 objects require some degree of high column density partial coverer in order to fully model the hard X-ray spectrum. We also find that a large number of the objects in the sample (22 per cent) require high velocity, high ionization outflows in the Fe K region resulting from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. A further four AGN feature highly ionized Fe K absorbers consistent with zero outflow velocity, making a total of 14/46 (30 per cent) AGN in this sample showing evidence for statistically significant absorption in the Fe K region. Narrow Fe Kα emission from distant material at 6.4 keV is found to be almost ubiquitous in these AGN. Examining the 6-7 keV Fe K region we note that narrow emission lines originating from Fe XXV at 6.63-6.70 keV and from Fe XXVI at 6.97 keV are present in 52 and 39 per cent of objects, respectively. Our results suggest statistically significant relativistic Fe Kα emission is detected in 23 of 46 objects (50 per cent) at >99.5 per cent confidence, measuring an average emissivity index of q = 2.4 ± 0.1 and equivalent width ( EW )=96±10 eV using the RELLINE model. When parametrized with a Gaussian we find an average line energy of 6.32 ± 0.04 keV, σwidth = 0.470 ± 0.05 keV and EW =97±19 eV. Where we can place constraints upon the black hole spin parameter a, we do not require a maximally spinning black hole in all cases.

International audience; The coexistence of fast and slowly rotating cool stars in ZAMS clusters - forming distinct sequences in the color vs. rotation period plane - is providing clues to differences in their pre main-sequence angular momentum evolution. This Cool Stars 17 splinter was dedicated to a discussion of new observational and theoretical results that may help discriminate between proposed mechanisms for early angular momentum regulation and help us explain the observed ZAMS dichotomy.

The chronology of extension of the continental crust in western Turkey has been the subject of major controversies. We suggest that these difficulties have arisen in part because of past misuse of dating evidence; and in part because the assumption often made, that deposition of major terrestrial sedimentary sequences implies crustal extension to create the necessary accommodation space, is incorrect. We report evidence that the present phase of extension began in the Denizli region at ~ 7 Ma, around the start of the Messinian stage of the Late Miocene. This timing matches the estimated start of right-lateral slip on the North Anatolian Fault Zone, and corresponds to a substantial increase in the dimensions of the Aegean extensional province to roughly its present size: beforehand, between ~ 12 Ma and ~ 7 Ma, extension seems to have only occurred in the central part of this modern province. In some localities, terrestrial sedimentation that began before this start of extension continued into this extensional phase, both within and outside normal fault zones. However, in other localities within the hanging-walls of normal faults, the start of extension marked the end of sedimentation. Relationships between sedimentation and crustal extension in this region are thus not straightforward, and a simple correlation should therefore not be assumed in structural interpretations. During the time-scale of this phase of extension, the Denizli region has also experienced major vertical crustal motions that are unrelated to this extension. The northern part of this region, in the relatively arid interior of western Turkey, has uplifted by ~ 400 m since the Middle Pliocene, whereas its southern part, closer to the Mediterranean Sea and with a much wetter climate, has uplifted by ~ 1,200 m since the Early Miocene, by up to ~ 900 m since the Middle Pliocene, and by an estimated ~ 300 m since the Early Pleistocene. This regional uplift, superimposed on the local effects of active normal faulting, is interpreted as a consequence of lateral variations in rates of erosion. A reliable chronology for this phase of extension in western Turkey, in relation to changes in the geometry of motions of adjoining plates and Late Cenozoic environmental change, is now in place. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

International audience; Managing the effect of soft-errors in flip-flops is essential when designing reliable, silicon intensive systems using current technologies. Developing techniques and tools to accurately characterize the effects of temporal, logical and functional masking for industrial scale designs is challenging. In this paper, we present the results of a detailed analysis of flip-flop SEU effects for three large design blocks representing over a half million flops taken from a 40nm network processing ASIC. We describe how acceleration techniques can be used to transform a functional testbench into an effective environment for fault injection simulations. Derating factors are calculated and a statistical analysis applied to justify the confidence intervals. The masking results are combined to provide an overall prediction of the expected behaviour of the design in the presence of flip-flop SEUs. The methodology that is presented is general and is not tied to a specific application space such as micro-processors.

Forming a model (including absorption) of these AGN allows the true extent to which broadened diskline emission is present to be examined and as a result the measurement of accretion disc and black hole parameters which are consistent over the full 0.6-100.0 keV energy range.

International audience; V1280 Sco is one of the slowest dust-forming nova ever historically observed. We performed multi-epoch high-spatial resolution observations of the circumstellar dusty environment of V1280 Sco to investigate the level of asymmetry of the ejecta We observed V1280 Sco in 2009, 2010 and 2011 using unprecedented high angular resolution techniques. We used the NACO/VLT adaptive optics system in the J, H and K bands, together with contemporaneous VISIR/VLT mid-IR imaging that resolved the dust envelope of V1280 Sco, and SINFONI/VLT observations secured in 2011. We report the discovery of a dusty hourglass-shaped bipolar nebula. The apparent size of the nebula increased from 0.30" x 0.17" in July 2009 to 0.64" x 0.42" in July 2011. The aspect ratio suggests that the source is seen at high inclination. The central source shines efficiently in the K band and represents more than 56+/-5% of the total flux in 2009, and 87+/-6% in 2011. A mean expansion rate of 0.39+/-0.03 mas per day is inferred from the VISIR observations in the direction of the major axis, which represents a projected upper limit. Assuming that the dust shell expands in that direction as fast as the low-excitation slow ejecta detected in spectroscopy, this yields a lower limit distance to V1280 Sco of 1kpc; however, the systematic errors remain large due to the complex shape and velocity field of the dusty ejecta. The dust seems to reside essentially in the polar caps and no infrared flux is detected in the equatorial regions in the latest dataset. This may imply that the mass-loss was dominantly polar.

Relativistic Fe K line emission is only marginally required in NGC 3516 and not required in NGC 4051, over the full energy bandpass. Nonetheless, statistically significant broadened 6.4 keV Fe K alpha emission is detected in Fairall 9, MCG--6-30-15 and NGC 3783 yielding black hole spin estimates of a=0.67(+0.10,-0.11), a=0.4(+0.20,-0.12) and a, Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

International audience; Participants were exposed to a temporal generalization task where the duration of a small visual stimulus was judged. People received a 600 ms standard duration, then had to judge whether other durations (longer than, shorter than, or equal to the standard) were or were not the standard (making a YES or NO response). In different experimental conditions, the spacing of non-standard durations around the standard was 150 ms (Easy condition), or 75 ms (Difficult condition), so the two conditions involved some judgements made with the same stimuli (450, 600, and 750 ms). The experiment thus compared judgements of the same physical stimuli, when the basis of the judgement was the same, thus avoiding some problems of control that have been present in earlier electrophysiological studies of time judgements. As in previous work, fewer YES responses occurred in the Difficult condition and the 450 ms duration was less confused with the 600 ms standard than the 750 ms one was. Computer modelling suggested that this (fewer YES responses) was due to a decrease in the decision threshold for the YES judgement. The electrophysiological results showed a distinction between the Easy and Difficult conditions observable by a change in the LCPt (Late Positive Component of Timing) measured after the stimulus presentations and by a change in the P1, the CNV (Contingent Negative Variation), and its positive counterpart during the presentation of the stimulus, which were larger when the discrimination was difficult. Our results therefore suggest that the increase in the difficulty of the generalization task not only changes decision processes but also alters attentional mechanisms. They also reveal that the decision does not seem to involve a unitary mechanism but depends on a group of sub-processes, notably attentional mechanisms which are altered from the moment of presentation of the stimulus. Highlights - The research examined ERPs and behavioural responses when participants judged whether a visual stimulus had the same duration as a previous standard. - A task difficulty manipulation was used so that ERPs could be compared from the same physical stimuli when judgements were systematically changed. - This method addresses some persistent problems of experimental control in the electrophysiology of time perception. - Manipulation of task difficulty replicated effects found in previous work. - ERPs were larger when the task was more difficult in fronto-parietal regions during the stimuli and in prefrontal areas after stimulus termination.

International audience; We present the analysis of a new broad-band X-ray spectrum (0.6-180.0 keV) of the radio-quiet quasar MR 2251-178 which uses both Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope data. In accordance with previous observations, we find that the general continuum can be well described by a power law with Γ= 1.6 and an apparent soft excess below 1 keV. Warm absorption is clearly present, and absorption lines due to the Fe unresolved transition array, Fe L (Fe XXIII-XXIV), S XV and S XVI are detected below 3 keV. At higher energies, Fe K absorption from Fe XXV-XXVI is detected and a relatively weak (EW = 25+12-8 eV) narrow Fe Kα emission line is observed (E= 6.44 ± 0.04 keV) which is well modelled by the presence of a mildly ionized (ξ≲ 30) reflection component with a low reflection fraction (R < 0.2). At least five ionized absorption components with 1020≲NH≲ 1023 cm-2 and 0 ≲ log ξ/erg cm s-1≲ 4 are required to achieve an adequate spectral fit. Alternatively, we show that the continuum can also be fit if a Γ˜ 2.0 power law is absorbed by a column of NH˜ 1023 cm-2 which covers ˜30 per cent of the source flux. Independent of which continuum model is adopted, the Fe L and Fe XXV Heα lines are well fit by a single absorber outflowing with vout˜ 0.14c. Such an outflow/disc-wind is likely to be substantially clumped (b˜ 10-3) in order to not vastly exceed the likely accretion rate of the source.

International audience; Muscleblind-like-1 (MBNL1) is a splicing regulatory factor controlling the fetal-to-adult alternative splicing transitions during vertebrate muscle development. Its capture by nuclear CUG expansions is one major cause for type 1 myotonic dystro-phy (DM1). Alternative splicing produces MBNL1 isoforms that differ by the presence or absence of the exonic regions 3, 5, and 7. To understand better their respective roles and the consequences of the deregulation of their expression in DM1, here we studied the respective roles of MBNL1 alternative and constitu-tive exons. By combining genetics, molecular and cellular approaches, we found that (i) the exon 5 and 6 regions are both needed to control the nuclear localization of MBNL1; (ii) the exon 3 region strongly enhances the affinity of MBNL1 for its pre-mRNA target sites; (iii) the exon 3 and 6 regions are both required for the splicing regulatory activity, and this function is not enhanced by an exclusive nuclear localization of MBNL1; and finally (iv) the exon 7 region enhances MBNL1-MBNL1 dimerization properties. Consequently, the abnormally high inclusion of the exon 5 and 7 regions in DM1 is expected to enhance the potential of MBNL1 of being sequestered with nuclear CUG expansions, which provides new insight into DM1 pathophysiology.

We study the X-ray properties of LINER sources with definite detection of a broad H(alpha) emission line in their optical spectra, LINER 1s from Ho et al. sample. We methodically model the broad-band Suzaku spectra of a small sample of six 'bare' Seyfert galaxies: Ark 120, Fairall 9, MCG-02-14-009, Mrk 335, NGC 7469 and SWIFT J2127.4+5654. The analysis of bare Seyferts allows a consistent and physical modelling of AGN due to a weak amount of any intrinsic warm absorption, removing the degeneracy between the spectral curvature due to warm absorption and the red-wing of the Fe K region. Through effective modelling of the broad-band spectrum and investigating the presence of narrow neutral or ionized emission lines and reflection from distant material, we obtain an accurate and detailed description of the Fe K line region using models such as laor, kerrdisk and kerrconv. Results suggest that ionized emission lines at 6.7 keV and 6.97 keV (particularly Fe XXVI) are relatively common and the inclusion of these lines can greatly affect the parameters obtained with relativistic models i.e. spin, emissivity, inner radius of emission and inclination. Moderately broad components are found in all objects, but typically the emission originates from tens of Rg, rather than within, 19 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables, MNRAS accepted

Item does not contain fulltext The mismatch repair protein, MSH3, together with MSH2, forms the MutSbeta heterodimer which recognizes and repairs base pair mismatches and larger insertion/deletion loops in DNA. Lack of specific antibodies against mouse MSH3 has hampered studies of its expression and localization. Mouse MSH3 is not immunogenic in normal mice. This problem was overcome by immunizing msh3-knockout mice and generating a panel of ten monoclonal antibodies, two of which localize MSH3 specifically in cultured mouse cells and bind to an epitope containing amino-acids 33-37. The panel also includes two antibodies that recognise both mouse and human MSH3 and bind to a conserved epitope containing amino-acids 187-194. The mouse MSH3-specific antibodies show that MSH3 is a nuclear protein with a finely-granular nucleoplasmic distribution, largely absent from areas of condensed heterochromatin. Specificity of the localization was demonstrated by absence of immunostaining in a cell line from the msh3-knockout mouse. (Abridged) Based on UV to X-ray and radio to UV flux ratios, some argue that low ionization emission line regions (LINERs) and low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down version of their more luminous predecessors Seyfert galaxies. Others, based on the lack of X-ray short (hours) time-scale variability, the non-detection of an iron line at 6.4 keV, and the faint UV emission, suggest the truncation of the classical thin accretion disk in the inner regions of the AGN where a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) structure forms. We investigate the LINER-Seyfert connection by studying the unabsorbed, AGN powered, LINER galaxy NGC 4278. We analyzed one XMM-Newton and seven Chandra X-ray observations of NGC 4278 spread over a three year period. We detected a flux increase by a factor of ~3 on a ~3 months time-scale and by a factor of 5 between the faintest and the brightest observation separated by ~3 years. During only the XMM-Newton observation, where the highest flux level is detected, we found a 10% flux increase on a ~1 hour time-scale. A combination of an absorbed power law (N(H)~10^20 cm^-2, Gamma~2.2) plus a thermal component (kT~0.6 keV) were able to fit the Chandra spectra. The XMM-Newton spectra, where the highest X-ray flux is detected, are well fitted with a single absorbed power-law. No Fe K(alpha) emission line is detected at 6.4 keV. We constructed SEDs based on simultaneous or quasi simultaneous observations and compared them to LINER, radio-loud, and radio-quiet quasar SEDs. We find that at a low X-ray flux the NGC 4278 SED resembles that of typical LINER sources where the radio to X-ray emission can be considered as originating from a jet and/or RIAF, whereas at a high X-ray flux, NGC 4278 SED is more like a low luminosity Seyfert SED. Consequently, NGC 4278 could exhibit both LINER and Seyfert nuclear activity depending on the strength of its X-ray emission., 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present an analysis of the extreme obscuration variability observed during an XMM-Newton 5-days continuous monitoring of the AGN in NGC 1365. The source was in a reflection-dominated state in the first ~1.5 days, then a strong increase of the 7-10 keV emission was observed in ~10 hours, followed by a symmetric decrease. The spectral analysis of the different states clearly shows that this variation is due to an uncovering of the X-ray source. International audience; This article focuses on a research project conducted in six jurisdictions: England, The Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Venezuela, and Brazil. These societies are very different ethnically, socially, politically, economically, historically and have wildly different levels of crime. Their policing arrangements also differ significantly: how they are organised; how their officers are equipped and trained; what routine operating procedures they employ; whether they are armed; and much else besides. Most relevant for this research, they represent policing systems with wildly different levels of police shootings, Police in the two Latin American countries represented here have a justified reputation for the frequency with which they shoot people, whereas at the other extreme the police in England do not routinely carry firearms and rarely shoot anyone. To probe whether these differences are reflected in the way that officers talk about the use of force, police officers in these different jurisdictions were invited to discuss in focus groups a scenario in which police are thwarted in their attempt to arrest two youths (one of whom is a known local criminal) by the youths driving off with the police in pursuit, and concludes with the youths crashing their car and escaping in apparent possession of a gun, It might be expected that focus groups would prove starkly different, and indeed they were, but not in the way that might be expected. There was little difference in affirmation of normative and legal standards regarding the use of force. It was in how officers in different jurisdictions envisaged the circumstances in which the scenario took place that led Latin American officers to anticipate that they would shoot the suspects, whereas officers in the other jurisdictions had little expectation that they would open fire in the conditions as they imagined them to be.

International audience; Parasite-induced alterations of the host phenotype have been reported in many systems. These changes are traditionally categorized into three kinds of phenomena: secondary outcomes of infection with no adaptive value, host adaptations that reduce the detrimental consequences of infection and parasitic adaptations that facilitate transmission. However, this categorization is a simple view, and host modifications should be considered as co-evolved traits, rather than a total takeover. Here, we present a novel scenario of manipulation, which has considerable potential to resolve issues that are specific to the evolution of behavioural alterations induced by parasites. It is proposed that certain parasites affect fitness-related traits in their hosts to trigger host compensatory responses because these responses can meet the transmission objectives of parasites.

International audience; What role do the media play in the medicalization of sleep problems? This article, based on a British Academy funded project, uses qualitative textual analysis to examine representations of insomnia and snoring in a large representative sample of newspaper articles taken from the UK national press from the mid-1980s to the present day. Constructed as `common problems' in the population at large, insomnia and snoring we show are differentially located in terms of medicalizing—healthicizing discourses and debates. Our findings also suggest important differences in the gendered construction of these problems and in terms of tabloid and `broadsheet' newspaper coverage of these issues. Newspaper constructions of sleep, it is concluded, are complex, depending on both the `problem' and the paper in question.

International audience; It is shown that in the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory, an edge wave can travel in a circular thin disk made of an isotropic elastic material. This disk edge wave turns out to be faster than the classic flexural acoustic wave in a straight-edged, semi-infinite, thin plate, a wave which it mimics when the curvature radius becomes very large compared to the wavelength.

(Abridged) We present here a long (100ks) XMM-Newton follow-up of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy ESO113-G010 performed in November 2005, in order to study over a longer time-scale its main X-ray properties. The source was found in a higher/softer time-averaged flux state, and timing analysis of this source reveals strong, rapid variability. The Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis indicates (at 95% c.l.) a break at 3.7 x 10^-4 Hz. This cut-off frequency is comparable to those measured in some other rapidly-variable Seyferts, such as MCG-6-30-15 and NGC4051. From the mass-luminosity-time-scale, we infer that M_BH ranges from 4 x 10^6 - 10^7 M_odot and the source is accreting at or close to the Eddington rate (or even higher). The existing data cannot distinguish between spectral pivoting of the continuum and a two-component origin for the spectral softening, primarily because the data do not span a broad enough flux range. In the case of the two-component model, the fractional offsets measured in the flux-flux plots increase significantly toward higher energies (similar to what is observed in MCG-6-30-15) as expected if there exists a constant reflection component. Contrary to May 2001, no significant highly redshifted emission line is observed (which might be related to the source flux level), while two narrow emission lines at about 6.5keV and 7keV are observed. The S/N is not high enough to establish if the lines are variable or constant. As already suggested by the 2001 observation, no significant constant narrow 6.4keV FeK line (EW~32eV) is observed, hence excluding any dominant emission from distant cold matter such as a torus in this Seyfert type 1.8 galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 10 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

International audience; A growing number of studies demonstrate, or suggest, that vector-borne parasites manipulate phenotypic traits of their vectors and hosts in ways that increase contacts between them, and hence favour the parasites' transmission [1,2]. Understanding these processes is not only exciting for purely scientific reasons but also important because of their role in applied parasitology, such as epidemiology and medicine. The most frequently reported changes induced by vector-borne parasites are alterations of biting rates in vectors or of attractiveness in vertebrate hosts [3,4]. Our aim here is to elaborate further on some potentially interesting and important avenues for future research in this area. We begin this paper with a brief overview of the main mechanisms used by vectors to locate their vertebrate host, as it helps to grasp the fundamentals of the research on manipulation in vectors, as well as its current challenges. Bloodsucking insects have well-developed sensorial machinery to locate and choose their host [5]. Host location behaviour is usually organized into three areas which show considerable variation among vector species: (i) the appetitive search, (ii) the activation and orientation, and (iii) the attraction. The two last steps involve insect responses to external stimuli, mainly visual and odour cues, but also heat and to a lesser extent, water vapour and sound [5]. Vision is most widely used by diurnal insect vectors (e.g., blackflies, tsetse flies, several mosquitoes). The detection depends mainly on differences in colour contrast and intensity contrast; generally, flies are attracted to blue/black objects while they are repelled by yellow ones. Odour-mediated host-seeking has been more thoroughly studied and seems to be utilized by virtually all bloodsucking insects. The olfactory stimuli used by the insects are various, ranging from carbon dioxide to lactic acid, ammonia, acetone, octenol, phenolic components of urine, and sweat. Bloodsucking insects can be also very sensitive to heat [5]. Although some of these components (vision, olfaction, hearing) could be theoretically altered by parasites in ways that may be predicted to enhance parasite transmission, only a few have been considered. Bite more or bite better? Qualitative manipulation, according to which generalist bloodfeeding insects, once infected, would develop a feeding preference for hosts targeted by the parasite, is an underexplored scenario. Maximising transmission towards a suitable host could be achieved by parasites by inducing in the vector a sensory bias for host traits that are correlated with optimal suitability for the parasite. Qualitative manipulation could theoretically occur at two levels: (i) at the interspecific level, with infected vectors biting more than expected on suitable host species for the parasite and (ii) at the intraspecific level, when infected vectors prefer feeding on less-immune hosts or on individuals that are uninfected (and thus do not yet harbour potential competitors). In particular cases, however (e.g., Plasmodium), the reverse tendency might be expected in order to find a sexual partner of a different strain. To test for the qualitative manipulation hypothesis, a dual-port olfactometer could be used to quantify the behavioural responses of infected and uninfected insect vectors to volatiles emitted by different host species. For instance, Glossina palpalis gambiensis has a broad range of hosts in central Africa (humans, reptiles, bushbuck, and ox) and is the main vector of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense responsible for the medically important Human African trypanosomiasis. We would predict that once infected, flies are more attracted by human cues than by those of other vertebrates.

Criticism is an important aspect of communication within and between groups, but reactions to criticism of groups have been little studied. Past research has shown that criticism elicits greater sensitivity when made by an outgroup member, compared to an ingroup member. Two experiments were conducted to examine how this intergroup sensitivity effect (ISE) is affected by the context of the criticism. Experiment 1 showed that the ISE occurs in a private context, but disappears when it is clear that the criticism is made to a large public audience. Experiment 2 investigated intragroup criticism and manipulated both audience size and audience composition. Results showed that ingroup criticism elicited greater sensitivity and less favorable evaluations of the speaker when made to an outgroup rather than an ingroup audience. The results highlight strategic considerations and tacit protocols governing the criticism of groups.

Background A genetic component of early-onset lung cancer has been suggested. The role of metabolic gene polymorphisms has never been studied in young lung cancer cases. Phase 1 and Phase 2 gene polymorphisms are involved in tobacco carcinogens' metabolism and therefore in lung cancer risk. Methods The effect of metabolic gene polymorphisms on lung cancer at young ages was studied by pooling data from the Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogens (GSEC) database. All primary lung cancer cases of both sexes who were Caucasian and less than or equal to45 years of age at diagnosis, and the corresponding controls were selected. We obtained 261 cases and 1452 controls. Results There was a marginally significant association between lung cancer and GST1 null genotype (OR = 1.2; 95% Cl: 1.0-1.6), and a significant association between lung cancer and the homozygous CYP1A1 Msp1 variant allele (CYP1A1*2A and *2B) genotype (OR = 4.7 95% Cl: 1.2-19.0). When data were stratified by smoking status, the association between CYP1A1 genotype and lung cancer was confined to never smokers. Conclusions These results suggest that metabolic genetic factors play a role in lung cancer developing at young ages. (Less)

WOS: 000174977600004, The left-lateral Amanos Fault follows a similar to 200-km-long and up to similar to 2-km-high escarpment that bounds the eastern margin of the Amanos mountain range and the western margin of the Karasu Valley in southern Turkey, just east of the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. Regional kinematic models have reached diverse conclusions as to the role of this fault in accommodating relative motion between either the African and Arabian, Turkish and African, or Turkish and Arabian plates. Local studies have tried to estimate its slip rate by K-Ar dating Quaternary basalts that erupted within the Amanos Mountains, flowed across it into the Karasu Valley, and have since become offset. However, these studies have yielded a wide range of results, ranging from similar to 0.3 to similar to 15 mm, a(-1), which do not allow the overall role and significance of this fault in accommodating crustal deformation to be determined. We have used the Cassignol K-Ar method to date nine Quaternary basalt samples from the vicinity of the southern part of the Amanos Fault. These basalts exhibit a diverse chemistry, which we interpret as a consequence varying degrees of partial melting of their source combined with variable crustal contamination. This dating allows us to constrain the Quaternary slip rate on the Amanos fault to similar to 1.0 to similar to 1.6 mm a(-1). The dramatic discrepancies between past estimates of this slip rate are partly due to technical difficulties in K-Ar dating of young basalts by isotope dilution. In addition, previous studies at the key locality of Hacilar have unwittingly dated different, chemically distinct, flow units of different ages that are juxtaposed. This low slip rate indicates that, at present, the Amanos Fault takes up a small proportion of the relative motion between the African and Arabian plates, which is transferred southward to the Dead Sea Fault Zone. It also provides strong evidence against the long-standing view that its slip continues offshore to the southwest along a hypothetical left-lateral fault zone located south of Cyprus. The [Sr/Ba] and [Y/Ba] scatter observed in some galactic halo stars that are very metal-poor stars and in a few individual stars of the oldest known Milky Way globular cluster NGC 6522,have been interpreted as evidence of early enrichment by massive fast-rotating stars (spinstars). Because NGC 6522 is a bulge globular cluster, the suggestion was that not only the very-metal poor halo stars, but also bulge stars at [Fe/H]~-1 could be used as probes of the stellar nucleosynthesis signatures from the earlier generations of massive stars, but at much higher metallicity. For the bulge the suggestions were based on early spectra available for stars in NGC 6522, with a medium resolution of R~22,000 and a moderate signal-to-noise ratio. The main purpose of this study is to re-analyse the NGC 6522 stars previously reported using new high-resolution (R~45,000) and high signal-to-noise spectra (S/N>100). We aim at re-deriving their stellar parameters and elemental ratios, in particular the abundances of the neutron-capture s-process-dominated elements such as Sr, Y, Zr, La, and Ba, and of the r-element Eu. High-resolution spectra of four giants belonging to the bulge globular cluster NGC 6522 were obtained at the 8m VLT UT2-Kueyen telescope with the UVES spectrograph in FLAMES-UVESconfiguration. The spectroscopic parameters were derived based on the excitation and ionization equilibrium of \ion{Fe}{I} and \ion{Fe}{II}. Our analysis confirms a metallicity [Fe/H] = -0.95+-0.15 for NGC 6522, and the overabundance of the studied stars in Eu (with +~0.2 < [Eu/Fe] < +~0.4) and alpha-elements O and Mg. The neutron-capture s-element-dominated Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La now show less pronounced variations from star to star. Innovant par rapport aux précédentes tentatives (COGAN [1981], BOURGUIGNON, MAGNAC [1990]), nous fondons l'identification des coûts de participation sur l'observation de certaines dépenses dont une fraction inconnue représente les coûts de participation et le reste la consommation désirée ; l'identification provenant de la population des couples dont la femme ne travaille pas, pour lesquels la totalité de la dépense est désirée. Le modèle est estimé à partir des données de l'enquête Budgets des Familles de l'INSEE effectuée en 1984/1985.

The remote actuation of cellular processes such as migration or neuronal outgrowth is a challenge for future therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine. Among the different methods that have been proposed, the use of magnetic nanoparticles appears to be promising since magnetic fields can act at a distance without interactions with the surrounding biological system. To control biological processes at a subcellular spatial resolution, magnetic nanoparticles can be used either to induce biochemical reactions locally or to apply forces on different elements of the cell. Here, we show that cell migration and neurite outgrowth can be directed by the forces produced by a switchable parallelized array of micro-magnetic pillars, following passive uptake of nanoparticles. Using live cell imaging, we first demonstrate that adherent cell migration can be biased toward magnetic pillars and that cells can be reversibly trapped onto these pillars. Second, using differentiated neuronal cells we were able to induce events of neurite outgrowth in the direction of the pillars without impending cell viability. Our results show that the range of forces applied needs to be adapted precisely to the cellular process under consideration. We propose that cellular actuation is the result of the force on the plasma membrane caused by magnetically filled endo-compartments, which exert a pulling force on the cell periphery.
