Abstract

This study aimed to determine, among community-dwelling older adults, effects of aging on limits of stability in various directions and total area of functional base of support (FBoS) while standing. Forty-three older adults and 43 young adults maintained limits of stability in eight directions. FBoS was defined as the octagon formed by the corners made by the positions of center of pressure in the eight stability limits. FBoS area was smaller in older adults (36.6% ± 7.6% of base of support) than in young adults (47.2% ± 6.4%). Although the reduction in limits of stability in older adults can occur in all directions, the degree of the reduction varies in a direction-specific manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Visualization of markers is critical for imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the size of the marker varies according to the imaging technique. While a large-sized marker is more useful for visualization in MRI, it results in artifacts on CT and causes substantial pain on administration. In contrast, a small-sized marker reduces the artifacts on CT but hampers MRI detection. Herein, we report a new ironcontaining marker and compare its utility with that of non-iron-containing markers. Five patients underwent CT/MRI fusion-based intensity-modulated radiotherapy, and the markers were placed by urologists. A Gold Anchor™ (GA; diameter, 0.28 mm; length, 10 mm) was placed using a 22G needle on the right side of the prostate. A VISICOIL™ (VIS; diameter, 0.35 mm; length, 10 mm) was placed using a 19G needle on the left side. MRI was performed using T2*-weighted imaging. Three observers evaluated and scored the visual qualities of the acquired images. The mean score of visualization was almost identical between the GA and VIS in radiography and cone-beam CT (Novalis Tx). The artifacts in planning CT were slightly larger using the GA than using the VIS. The visualization of the marker on MRI using the GA was superior to that using the VIS. In conclusion, the visualization quality of radiography, conebeam CT, and planning CT was roughly equal between the GA and VIS. When performing intensity-modulated radiotherapy for prostate cancer, a marker is inserted into the prostate to enable the recognition of its position using cone-beam computed tomography (CT). However, it is difficult to recognize the prostatic outline using CT alone. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can depict the prostatic outline better than CT. In treatment plans using CT and MRI registration, various markers are used in institutions; however, the selection of an optimal marker size is difficult. Comparison of a different fiducial marker study was conducted using phantom, but no study in vivo was found. Therefore, we prospectively investigated the effects of different marker diameter sizes using CT and MR images., Thirty-one consecutive patients were enrolled in this study. CT and MRI were performed 3weeks after marker placement. The 0.35-mm-diameter marker was placed on the left side of the prostate, and the 0.5-mm-diameter marker was placed on the right side. The length of each marker was 10mm. The better MRI image was selected between those obtained using T2*-two-dimensional weighted image (T2*2D) and T2*-three-dimensional weighted image (T2*3D). Two observers evaluated and scored the prostatic outline image quality as well as visualized the prostatic markers using CT and MRI., MRI was significantly superior to CT in depicting the prostatic outline. The CT artifacts were significantly lesser for the 0.35-mm-diameter marker than for the 0.5-mm-diameter marker. Abstract

Eukaryotic mRNA has a cap structure at the 5′ end and a poly(A) tail at the 3′ end. The cap and poly(A) tail form a complex with multiple translation factors, and mRNA forms a circularized structure called a closed-loop model. This circularized structure reportedly not only stabilizes mRNA but also promotes ribosome recycling during translation, which improves translation efficiency. We designed an artificial mRNA that forms a circularized structure without a cap structure and poly(A) tail and found that its translational efficiency was improved compared with that of a sequence without the circularized structure in a eukaryotic translation system. 147. The effect of interfacial dynamics on the bulk mechanical properties of rubber composites

Abstract

The mechanical properties of rubber nanocomposites are believed to relate to the chain dynamics at the filler interface. Here, we tackle this hypothesis by combining traditional rheological measurements with our published results obtained by a modern technique of interfacial sensitive spectroscopy (Macromolecules 51:2180–2186, 2018). The complex shear modulus (G*) for silica (SiO2) nanoparticles filled with uncross-linked styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) was studied as a function of the strain amplitude and temperature. In the case of the composite with a higher SiO2fraction, G* remarkably decreased with increasing strain amplitude, known as the Payne effect. This phenomenon has been explained by the breakageof the filler network formed in the composite. Postulating that the G* difference between strain amplitudes of 0.1 and 20% (ΔG*) is a signature of the extent of how the filler network is broken, ΔG* was plotted against temperature. The decrement of ΔG* with increasing temperature changed at ~340 K. This temperature coincided with the temperature at which the chains in direct contact with the filler surface start to structurally relax. This coincidence was also observed for the SiO2-filled uncross-linked polyisoprene composite. Our results make it clear that the aforementioned hypothesis is likely for SiO2-filled uncross-linked rubber composites.

Abstract

Introduction Contouring the prostate using CT alone is difficult. MRI is used in registration of CT and MRI using fiducial markers. However, visualization of the marker itself can be difficult in MRI. Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the optimal MRI pulse sequence to define the marker, as well as the prostate gland, by comparing five sequences. Methods and materials A total of 21 consecutive patients with prostate cancer were enrolled. We obtained five sequences of T1-weighted spin-echo ([TR]/[TE]): (607/12) (T1WI), T2-weighted fast spin-echo (3000/80) (T2WI), T2 ∗ -2D-weighted gradient echo (4000/80) (T2 ∗ 2D), T2 ∗ -3D-weighted gradient echo [TR/TE1/deltaTE](37/14/7.3) (T2 ∗ 3D), and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo (607/12) (CE-T1WI). A qualitative image analysis of the sequence was also performed by three observers. These observers subjectively scored all images according to the following five evaluation items: definition of the outline of the prostate; apex vs. soft tissue; base vs. bladder; base vs. seminal vesicle; and gold fiducial marker detection. A score of 1–3 (1 = poor, 2 = moderate, 3 = good) was assigned to all items. A higher score was regarded to indicate better visualization. Results T2 ∗ 2D and T2 ∗ 3D were strongly superior to other sequences and significantly superior in terms of fiducial marker definition. T2 ∗ 3D was slightly superior to T2 ∗ 3D, but this difference was not significant. Conclusion We recommend that a T2 ∗ 3D examination is initially performed, followed by a T2 ∗ 2D sequence if necessary.

Abstract

To address the issue of the high cost of GaN substrates, a recycling process for GaN substrates using a laser slicing technique was investigated. The channel properties of lateral MOSFETs and the reverse characteristics of vertical PN diodes, which represent the main components of vertical power devices, exhibited no degradation either before and after laser slicing or due to the overall GaN substrate recycling process. This result indicates that the proposed recycling process is an effective method for reducing the cost of GaN substrates and has the potential to encourage the popularization of GaN vertical power devices.
