Since 2016 the BIM Innovation Capability Programme (BICP) has captured the capability of the Irish Construction Industry’s and the Higher Education Institutes’ (HEIs) response to the increased requirement for BIM on Irish construction and engineering projects. One of the primary responsibilities of the BICP research team is to collate data to assist the National BIM Council of Ireland in the formulation of a National BIM Roadmap. To assist the Council with this task the BICP research team applied five macro BIM maturity conceptual models to assess Ireland’s BIM maturity. The results from the models were further utilised to develop a national BIM adoption policy. The application of the five models helped identify the key policies’ deliverables and the macro maturity components that must be addressed within the initiation and consultation phase of proposing the Irish roadmap. The results also demonstrated the benefits of continuing the BICP initiative into the execution phase of the roadmap, so as to ensure successful integration of its findings within the sector.

This scientific work has tackled the question of the pancreatic islets aging and the effect of endothelial senescence and microparticles (MPs) on islet function. We investigated the impact of aging on pancreas morphology, fate and on the function of the pancreatic islet by comparative analysis between pancreas in young and middle-aged rats, as well as the role of pro-senescent endothelial MPs on islet function and their premature senescence. Our in vivo data show that the pancreas is an early sensitive organ to oxidative stress accumulating with age and leading to overexpression of the procoagulant and senescence markers without appearance of apoptosis. In vitro, MPs of senescent endothelial cells have a pro-senescent effect on pancreatic islets isolated from young rats with characteristic SA-β-galactosidase activity, overexpression of p53, p21 and p16 markers and reducing the ability of insulin secretion in response to glucose. Altogether, our in vivo and in vitro data indicate the contribution of endothelial senescence as a possible contributor to graft dysfunction.; Ce travail scientifique a abordé la problématique du vieillissement des îlots pancréatiques et l’effet de la senescence endothéliale et des microparticules (MPs) sur la fonction des îlots. Nous avons exploré l’impact du vieillissement du pancréas sur la morphologie, le devenir et la fonction de l’îlot pancréatique par analyse comparative entre pancréas de rats jeunes et d’âge moyen et le rôle des MPs endothéliales pro-sénescentes sur la fonction des îlots et leur sénescence prématurée. Nos résultats in vivo montrent que le pancréas est un organe précocement sensible au stress oxydant s’accumulant avec l’âge. Il conduit à la surexpression des marqueurs procoagulants et de senescence sans apparition d’apoptose. In vitro, les MPs de cellules endothéliales sénescentes ont un effet pro-sénescent sur les îlots pancréatiques isolés de rats jeunes avec une activité SA-β-galactosidase caractéristique, la surexpression des marqueurs p53, p21 et p16 et la réduction de la capacité de la sécrétion d’insuline en réponse au glucose. L’ensemble de nos résultats in vivo et in vitro désigne la contribution de la sénescence endothéliale comme une cause probable à la dysfonction de greffon.

A relatively new way for utilizing the thermal performance of heat pipes is to use nanofluids as working fluids in the heat pipes. Heat pipes are effective heat transfer devices in which the nanofluid operates in the two phases, evaporation and condensation. The heat pipe transfers the heat supplied in e.g. a laptop, from the evaporator to condenser part. Nanofluids are mixtures consisting of nanoparticles (e.g. nano-sized silver particles) and a base fluid (e.g. water). The aim of this bachelor’s thesis has been to examine the effect of nanofluids on heat pipes on the subject of temperature parameters and thermal resistance in the heat pies, through findings in literature and an applied model. The study, based on literature and an applied model, found that higher particle conductivity and higher concentration of nanoparticles consequently decrease the thermal resistance in the heat pipes, resulting in an enhanced thermal performance of the heat pipes with nanofluids as working fluids. It is however concluded that difficulties in finding the optimal synthesis of nanofluids, the concentration level of nanoparticles and the filling ratio of nanofluids in heat pipes, set bounds to the commercial use of nanofluids in heat pipes. It is suggested that, in order to enhance the heat transfer performance of nanofluids in heat pipes, to conduct further research concerning e.g. synthesis of nanofluids and concentration level of nanoparticles in nanofluids.
