We report the experimental observation of nonlinear light localization and edge soliton formation at the edges of fs-laser written trimer waveguide arrays, where transition from non-topological to topological phases is controlled by the spacing between neighboring trimers. We found that, in the former regime, edge solitons occur only above a considerable power threshold, whereas in the latter one they bifurcate from linear states. Edge solitons are observed in a broad power range where their propagation constant falls into one of the topological gaps of the system, while partial delocalization is observed when considerable nonlinearity drives the propagation constant into an allowed band, causing coupling with bulk modes. Our results provide direct experimental evidence of the coexistence and selective excitation in the same or in different topological gaps of two types of topological edge solitons with different internal structures, which can rarely be observed even in nontopological systems. High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has been touted as a way to probe ultrafast dynamics and crystal symmetries in condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the polarization properties of high-order harmonics generated in monolayer MoS$_2$, as a function of crystal orientation relative to the mid-infrared laser field polarization. At several different laser wavelengths we experimentally observe a prominent angular shift of the parallel-polarized odd harmonics for energies above approximately 3.5 eV, and our calculations indicate that this shift originates in subtle differences in the recombination dipole strengths involving multiple conduction bands. This observation is material specific and is in addition to the angular dependence imposed by the dynamical symmetry properties of the crystal interacting with the laser field, and may pave the way for probing the vectorial character of multi-band recombination dipoles.

We consider a topological Floquet insulator realized as a honeycomb array of helical waveguides imprinted in weakly birefringent medium. The system accounts for four-wave mixing occurring at a series of resonances arising due to Floquet phase matching. Under these resonant conditions, the system sustains stable linearly polarized and metastable elliptically polarized two-component edge solitons. Coupled nonlinear equations describing evolution of the envelopes of such solitons are derived.

Topological insulators are unique physical structures that are insulators in their bulk, but support currents at their edges which can be unidirectional and topologically protected from scattering on disorder and inhomogeneities. Photonic topological insulators can be crafted in materials that exhibit a strong nonlinear response, thus opening the door to the exploration of the interplay between nonlinearity and topological effects. Among the fascinating new phenomena arising from this interplay is the formation of topological edge solitons -- hybrid asymmetric states localized across and along the interface due to different physical mechanisms. Such solitons have so far been studied only in materials with Kerr-type, or cubic, nonlinearity. Here the first example of the topological edge soliton supported by parametric interactions in $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinear media is presented. Such solitons exist in Floquet topological insulators realized in arrays of helical waveguides made of a phase-matchable $\chi^{(2)}$ material. Floquet edge solitons bifurcate from topological edge states in the spectrum of the fundamental frequency wave and remain localized over propagation distances drastically exceeding the helix period, while travelling along the edge of the structure. A theory of such states is developed. It is shown that multicolor solitons in a Floquet system exists in the vicinity of (formally infinite) set of linear resonances determined by the Floquet phase matching conditions. Away from resonance, soliton envelopes can be described by a period-averaged single nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with an effective cubic nonlinear coefficient whose magnitude and sign depend on the overall phase-mismatch between the fundamental frequency and second harmonic waves.

One-dimensional topological pumping of matter waves in two overlaid optical lattices moving with respect to each other is considered in the presence of attractive nonlinearity. It is shown that there exists a threshold nonlinearity level above which the matter transfer is completely arrested. Below this threshold the transfer of both dispersive wavepackets and solitons occurs in accordance with the predictions of the linear theory, i.e. it is quantized and determined by the dynamical Chern numbers of the lowest band. The breakdown of the transport is also explained by nontrivial topology of the bands. In that case, the nonlinearity induces Rabi oscillations of atoms between two (or more) lowest bands. If the sum of the dynamical Chern numbers of the populated bands is zero, the oscillatory dynamics of a matter soliton in space occurs, which corresponds to the transport breakdown. Otherwise the sum of the Chern numbers of the nonlinearity-excited bands determines the direction and magnitude of the average velocity of matter solitons that remains quantized and admits fractional values. Thus, even in strongly nonlinear regime the topology of the linear bands is responsible for the evolution of solitons. We introduce a continuous one-dimensional non-Hermitian matrix gauge potential and study its effect on dynamics of a two-component field. The model is emulated by a system of evanescently coupled nonlinear waveguides with distributed gain and losses. The considered gauge fields lead to a variety of unusual physical phenomena in both linear and nonlinear regimes. In the linear regime, the field may undergo superexponential convective amplification. A total power of an input Gaussian beam may exhibit a finite-distance blowup, which manifests itself in absolute delocalization of the beam at a finite propagation distance, where the amplitude of the field remains finite. The defocusing Kerr nonlinearity initially enhances superexponential amplification, while at larger distances it suppresses the growth of the total power. The focusing nonlinearity at small distances slows down the power growth and eventually leads to the development of the modulational instability. We consider an array of straight nonlinear waveguides constituting a two-dimensional square lattice, with a few central layers tilted with respect to the rest of the structure. It is shown that such configuration represents a line defect, in the lattice plane, which is periodically modulated along the propagation direction. In the linear limit, such a system sustains line defect modes, whose number coincides with the number of tilted layers. In the presence of nonlinearity the branches of defect solitons propagating along the defect line bifurcate from each of the linear defect modes. Depending on the effective dispersion induced by the Floquet spectrum of the underline system the bifurcating solitons can be either bright or dark. Dynamics and stability of such solitons are studied numerically.

We predict that photonic moir\'e patterns created by two mutually twisted periodic sublattices in quadratic nonlinear media allow the formation of parametric solitons under conditions that are strongly impacted by the geometry of the pattern. The question addressed here is how the geometry affects the joint trapping of multiple parametrically-coupled waves into a single soliton state. We show that above the localization-delocalization transition the threshold power for soliton excitation is drastically reduced relative to uniform media. Also, the geometry of the moir\'e pattern shifts the condition for phase-matching between the waves to the value that matches the edges of the eigenmode bands, thereby shifting the properties of all soliton families. In comparison with conventional lasers, topological lasers are more robust and can be immune to disorder or de-fects if lasing occurs in topologically protected states. Previously reported topological lasers were almost exclu-sively based on the first-order photonic topological insulators. Here, we show that lasing can be achieved in the zero-dimensional corner state in a second-order photonic topological insulator, which is based on Kagome wave-guide array with a rhombic configuration. If gain is present in the corner of the structure, where topological corner state resides, stable lasing in this state is achieved, with lowest possible threshold, in the presence of uniform loss-es and two-photon absorption. When gain acts in other corners of the structure, lasing may occur in edge or bulk states, but it requires substantially larger thresholds and transition to stable lasing occurs over much larger propa-gation distances, sometimes due to instabilities, which are absent for lasing in corner states. We find that increasing two-photon absorption generally plays strong stabilizing action for nonlinear lasing states. The transition to stable lasing stimulated by noisy inputs is illustrated. We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear waveguide with distributed gain and losses. The optical potential describing the system consists of an unperturbed complex potential depending only on one transverse coordinate, i.e., corresponding to a planar waveguide, and a small non-separable perturbation depending on both transverse coordinates. It is assumed that the spectrum of the unperturbed planar waveguide features an exceptional point (EP), while the perturbation drives the system into the unbroken phase. Slightly below the EP, the waveguide sustains two-component envelope solitons. We derive one-dimensional equations for the slowly varying envelopes of the components and show their stable propagation. Higher-order topological insulators (HOTI) are a novel topological phase beyond the framework of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. In these peculiar systems, the topologically nontrivial boundary modes are characterized by a co-dimension of at least two. Despite several promising preliminary considerations regarding the impact of nonlinearity in such systems, the flourishing field of experimental HOTI research has thus far been confined to the linear evolution of topological states. As such, the observation of the interplay between nonlinearity and the dynamics of higher-order topological phases in conservative systems remains elusive. In our work, we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear higher-order topological corner states. Our photonic platform enables us to observe nonlinear topological corner states as well as the formation of solitons in such topological structures. Our work paves the way towards the exploration of topological properties of matter in the nonlinear regime, and may herald a new class of compact devices that harnesses the intriguing features of topology in an on-demand fashion.

We theoretically introduce a new type of topological dipole solitons propagating in a Floquet topological insulator based on a kagome array of helical waveguides. Such solitons bifurcate from two edge states belonging to different topological gaps and have bright envelopes of different symmetries: fundamental for one component, and dipole for the other. The formation of dipole solitons is enabled by unique spectral features of the kagome array which allow the simultaneous coexistence of two topological edge states from different gaps at the same boundary. Notably, these states have equal and nearly vanishing group velocities as well as the same sign of the effective dispersion coefficients. We derive envelope equations describing components of dipole solitons and demonstrate in full continuous simulations that such states indeed can survive over hundreds of helix periods without any noticeable radiation into the bulk., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Physical Review A

We uncover a novel and robust phenomenon that causes the gradual self-replication of spatiotemporal Kerr cavity patterns in cylindrical microresonators. These patterns are inherently synchronised multi-frequency combs. Under proper conditions, the axially-localized nature of the patterns leads to a fundamental drift instability that induces transitions amongst patterns with a different number of rows. Self-replications, thus, result in the stepwise addition or removal of individual combs along the cylinder's axis. Transitions occur in a fully reversible and, consequently, deterministic way. The analysis of the functional connectivity of brain sections associated with fear-conditioned training is one of the methods of study of memory neural networks. Before, the majority of studies focused on the functional connectivity of the brain regions that are known for emotional processing such as amygdala and areas of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex in the resting state right after the formation of a fear-conditioned reflex. In the present study authors applied the methods of the theory of graphs to search for changes in the functional connectivity at the level of the brain in the resting state in a week dynamics after the extinction of a conditioned reflex with partial reinforcement. The most significant changes were observed in the functional connectivity of the left parahippocampal area. In particular, the rostral part of the left parahippocampal gyrus became the center of a new subnetwork connected with the rostral part of the left hippocampus in all the sessions and after the extinction of a conditioned reflex and the lateral part of the left amygdala right after the extinction and a day after the extinction of a conditioned reflex. A week after the extinction of a conditioned reflex, the rostral part of the left parahippocampal gyrus also had more connections with the areas of the middle frontal gyrus in comparison with the parameters of the baseline resting state to the stimulus. Besides, these changes remained within one week from the moment of the extinction of a conditioned reflex, which could be explained by the chosen paradigm of conditioned reflex with partial reinforcement that led to a slower extinction than a paradigm with full reinforcement.

Exploration of the impact of synthetic material landscapes featuring tunable geometrical properties on physical processes is a research direction that is currently of great interest because of the outstanding phenomena that are continually being uncovered. Twistronics and the properties of wave excitations in moir\'e lattices are salient examples. Moir\'e patterns bridge the gap between aperiodic structures and perfect crystals, thus opening the door to the exploration of effects accompanying the transition from commensurate to incommensurate phases. Moir\'e patterns have revealed profound effects in graphene-based systems1,2,3,4,5, they are used to manipulate ultracold atoms6,7 and to create gauge potentials8, and are observed in colloidal clusters9. Recently, it was shown that photonic moir\'e lattices enable observation of the two-dimensional localization-to-delocalization transition of light in purely linear systems10,11. Here, we employ moir\'e lattices optically induced in photorefractive nonlinear media12,13,14 to elucidate the formation of optical solitons under different geometrical conditions controlled by the twisting angle between the constitutive sublattices. We observe the formation of solitons in lattices that smoothly transition from fully periodic geometries to aperiodic ones, with threshold properties that are a pristine direct manifestation of flat-band physics11., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The hallmark feature of topological insulators renders edge transport virtually impervious to scattering at defects and lattice disorder. In our work, we experimentally demonstrate a topological system, using a photonic platform, in which the very existence of the topological phase is brought about by nonlinearity. Whereas in the linear regime, the lattice structure remains topologically trivial, light beams launched above a certain power threshold drive the system into its transient topological regime, and thereby define a nonlinear unidirectional channel along its edge. Our work studies topological properties of matter in the nonlinear regime, and may pave the way towards compact devices that harness topological features in an on-demand fashion.

We model generation of vortex modes in exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor micropillars, arranged into a hexagonal ring molecule, in the presence of TE-TM splitting. This splitting lifts the degeneracy of azimuthally modulated vortex modes with opposite topological charges supported by this structure, so that a number of non-degenerate vortex states characterized by different combinations of topological charges in two polarization components appears. We present a full bifurcation picture for such vortex modes and show that because they have different energies, they can be selectively excited by coherent pump beams with specific frequencies and spatial configurations. At high pumping intensity, polariton-polariton interactions give rise to the coupling of different vortex resonances and a bistable regime is achieved.

We address topological currents in polariton condensates excited by uniform resonant pumps in finite honeycomb arrays of microcavity pillars with a hole in the center. Such currents arise under combined action of the spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman splitting that break the time-reversal symmetry and open a topological gap in the spectrum of the structure. The most representative feature of this structure is the presence of two interfaces, inner and outer ones, where the directions of topological currents are opposite. Due to the finite size of the structure polariton-polariton interactions lead to the coupling of the edge states at the inner and outer interfaces, which depends on the size of the hollow region. Moreover, switching between currents can be realized by tuning the pump frequency. We illustrate that currents in this finite structure can be stable and study bistability effects arising due to the resonant character of the pump.

Moire lattices consist of two identical periodic structures overlaid with a relative rotation angle. Present even in everyday life, moire lattices have been also produced, e.g., with coupled graphene-hexagonal boron nitride monolayers, graphene-graphene layers, and layers on a silicon carbide surface.A fundamental question that remains unexplored is the evolution of waves in the potentials defined by the moire lattices. Here we experimentally create two-dimensional photonic moire lattices, which, unlike their material predecessors, have readily controllable parameters and symmetry allowing to explore transitions between structures with fundamentally different geometries: periodic, general aperiodic and quasi-crystal ones. Equipped with such realization, we observe localization of light in deterministic linear lattices. Such localization is based on at band physics, in contrast to previous schemes based on light difusion in optical quasicrystals,where disorder is required for the onset of Anderson localization. Using commensurable and incommensurable moire patterns, we report the first experimental demonstration of two-dimensional localization-delocalization-transition (LDT) of light. Moire lattices may feature almost arbitrary geometry that is consistent with the crystallographic symmetry groups of the sublattices, and therefore afford a powerful tool to control the properties of light patterns, to explore the physics of transitions between periodic and aperiodic phases, and two-dimensional wavepacket phenomena relevant to several areas of science., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We show that attractive two-dimensional spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with helicoidal spatially periodic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) support a rich variety of stable fundamental solitons and bound soliton complexes. Such states exist with chemical potentials belonging to the semi-infinite gap in the band spectrum created by the periodically modulated SOC. All these states exist above a certain threshold value of the norm. The chemical potential of fundamental solitons attains the bottom of the lowest band, whose locus is a ring in the space of Bloch momenta, and the radius of the ring is a non-monotonous function of the SOC strength. The chemical potential of soliton complexes does not attain the band edge. The complexes are bound states of several out-of-phase fundamental solitons whose centers are placed at local maxima of the SOC-modulation phase. In this sense, the impact of the helicoidal SOC landscape on the solitons is similar to that of a periodic two-dimensional potential. In particular, it can compensate repulsive forces between out-of-phase solitons, making their bound states stable. Extended stability domains are found for complexes built of two and four solitons (dipoles and quadrupoles, respectively). We predict that Lee-Huang-Yang effect makes it possible to create stable quantum droplets (QDs) in binary Bose-Einstein condensates with a hetero-symmetric or hetero-multipole structure, i.e., different vorticities or multipolarities in their components. The QDs feature flat-top shapes when either chemical potential \mu_1,2 of the droplet approaches an edge of a triangular existence domain in the (\mu_1,\mu_2) plane. QDs with different vorticities of their components are stable against azimuthal perturbations, provided that the norm of one component is large. We also present multipole states, in which the interaction with a strong fundamental component balances the repulsion between poles with opposite signs in the other component, leading to the formation of stable bound states. Extended stability domains are obtained for dipole QDs; tripole ones exist but are unstable, while quadrupoles are stable in a narrow region. The concept of optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) underpins the existence of strongly localized waves embedded into the radiation spectrum that can enhance the electromagnetic fields in subwavelength photonic structures. Early studies of optical BICs in waveguides and photonic crystals uncovered their topological properties, and the concept of quasi-BIC metasurfaces facilitated applications of strong light-matter interactions to biosensing, lasing, and low-order nonlinear processes. Here we employ BIC-empowered dielectric metasurfaces to generate efficiently high optical harmonics up to the 11th order. We optimize a BIC mode for the first few harmonics and observe a transition between perturbative and nonperturbative nonlinear regimes. We also suggest a general strategy for designing subwavelength structures with strong resonances and nonperturbative nonlinearities. Our work bridges the fields of perturbative and nonperturbative nonlinear optics on the subwavelength scale.

We address the resonant response and bistability of the exciton-polariton corner states in a higher-order nonlinear topological insulator realized with kagome arrangement of microcavity pillars. Such states are resonantly excited and exist due to the balance between pump and losses, on the one hand, and between nonlinearity and dispersion in inhomogeneous potential landscape, on the other hand, for pump energy around eigen-energies of corresponding linear localized modes. Localization of the nonlinear corner states in a higher-order topological insulator can be efficiently controlled by tuning pump energy. We link the mechanism of corner state formation with symmetry of the truncated kagome array. Corner states coexist with densely packed edge states, but are well-isolated from them in energy. We reveal the universal effect of gauge fields on the existence, evolution, and stability of solitons in the spinor multidimensional nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation. Focusing on the two-dimensional case, we show that when gauge field can be split in a pure gauge and a \rtext{non-pure gauge} generating \rtext{effective potential}, the roles of these components in soliton dynamics are different: the \btext{localization characteristics} of emerging states are determined by the curvature, while pure gauge affects the stability of the modes. Respectively the solutions can be exactly represented as the envelopes independent of the pure gauge, modulating stationary carrier-mode states, which are independent of the curvature. Our central finding is that nonzero curvature can lead to the existence of unusual modes, in particular, enabling stable localized self-trapped fundamental and vortex-carrying states in media with constant repulsive interactions without additional external confining potentials and even in the expulsive external traps., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Phys. We introduce the phenomenon of spiraling vortices in driven-dissipative (non-equilibrium) exciton-polariton condensates excited by a non-resonant pump beam. At suitable low pump intensities, these vortices are shown to spiral along circular trajectories whose diameter is inversely proportional to the effective mass of the polaritons, while the rotation period is mass independent. Both diameter and rotation period are inversely proportional to the pump intensity. Stable spiraling patterns in the form of complexes of multiple mutually-interacting vortices are also found. At elevated pump intensities, which create a stronger homogeneous background, we observe more complex vortex trajectories resembling Spirograph patterns.

We predict that spatially modulated Zeeman splitting resulting in the formation of Zeeman lattice can be used for creation of localized self-sustained excitations in spinor polariton condensates with dominant repulsive interactions. In such lattices, the phenomenon of TE-TM splitting, playing the role of effective spin-orbit interaction, leads to the emergence of the stripe phase and formation of stable gap-stripe solitons with complex intrinsic structure resulting from the presence of two characteristic spatial scales, one of which is set by the period of Zeeman lattice, while other is set by the momentum in the depth of the Brillouin zone, at which such solitons bifurcate from the linear spectrum. Gap-stripe polariton solitons can be excited by suitable resonant pump.
