Nitrate in the soil water below the root zone is a pre-condition for nitrate leaching, and it indicates loss of nutrients from the forest ecosystem. Nitrate leaching may potentially cause eutrophication of surface water and contamination of ground water. In order to evaluate the extent of nitrate leaching in relation to land-use, a national monitoring programme has established sampling routines in a 7×7 km grid including 111 points in forests. During winters of 1986–1993, soil samples were obtained from a depth of 0–25, 25–50, 50–75 and 75–100 cm. Nitrate concentrations in soil solutions were determined by means of a 1 M KCl extraction. The influence of forest size, forest-type, soil-type, tree species and sampling time on the nitrate concentrations was analysed in a statistical model. The analysis focused on data from depth 75–100 cm, as nitrate is considered potentially lost from the ecosystem at this depth. The range of nitrate concentrations was 0–141 mg NO − 3 –N dm −3 and the estimated mean value was 1.51 mg NO − 3 –N dm −3 . The concentration was influenced by (1) forest size (concentrations in forests 50 ha), (2) forest-type (afforested arable land had higher concentrations than forest-type `other woodland'), (3) soil-type (humus soils showed above average concentrations, and fine textured soils had higher concentrations than coarse textured soils), and (4) sampling time. Unlike other investigations, there was no significant effect of tree species. A few sites deviated radically from the general pattern of low concentrations. The elevated concentrations recorded there were probably caused by high levels of N deposition due to emission from local sources or temporal disruptions of the N cycle. The nitrate concentration in the soil solution below the root zone was mostly rather low, indicating that, generally, N saturation has not yet occurred in Danish forest ecosystems. However, median concentrations exceeding drinking water standards (11.3 mg NO − 3 –N dm −3 ) were found at 7% of the sites. Furthermore, 30% of the sites had median concentrations above 2 mg NO − 3 –N dm −3 , suggested as an elevated level for Danish forest ecosystems, equalling annual N losses of more than 2–6 kg ha −1 year −1 .

Area-based sampling was carried out to investigate the effect of thinning and soil properties on accumulation of forest floor carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands in Denmark. Four thinning intensities (unthinned, and about 83%, 67% and 50% of unthinned basal area) were investigated at three sites in Denmark: a calcareous, relatively nutrient rich soil with a sandy loam/loam texture and two soils with low to intermediate nutritional status and sandy loam and loamy sand textures, respectively. The effect of thinning on accumulated carbon and nitrogen was significant at two of the investigated sites. Accumulated phosphorus was significantly affected by thinning at one of these two sitesand at the third site. Accumulated carbon and phosphorus were negatively linearly correlated with thinning intensity. pH tended to be highest and C N and C P ratios tended to be lowest in the heaviest thinned plots. It is hypothesized that the differences in accumulation may be due to a more favourable microclimate and substrate for saprophytic organisms in the most heavily thinned plots. However, the differences between sites were greater than differences between thinning intensities. The accumulation of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the forest floors was much higher at the two less fertile sites with loamy sand and sandy loam than at the relatively fertile site with sandy loam/loam. Significant differences in pH and in C N and C P ratios at the three sites indicate that the amounts of available nutrients influence the mineralization pattern. In addition, at the site with the greatest forest floor root density, competition for nutrients and moisture between mycorrhiza-infected roots and free-living saprophytic decomposers may be co-responsible for the large amounts of accumulated carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Afforestation of cultivated soils causes soil acidification and elevated concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOC) in the soil solution, and hence, aggravate the risk of heavy metal leaching. The kinetics of cadmium and copper release from an unpolluted arable soil applied with forest floor soil solution was investigated in the laboratory, and the release rates correlated to pH and DOC in solution through log–log equations. The soil solution was isolated from Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) by centrifugation, and the solution passed a cation-exchange column to remove metal cations and to protonate the DOC. Soil samples from an arable Ap horizon were placed in completely mixed flow cells, and influent solutions with 0 to 5 mM DOC were applied. The solution pH was adjusted to achieve effluent pH values in the range 3.6 to 6.9 in the flow cells at steady-state conditions. Afforestation of former agricultural land changes soil characteristics such as pH and organic matter content, which may affect heavy metal solubility in the soil. In this study the effects of different tree species on heavy metal solubility were investigated at four 34 years old adjacent stands of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), grand fir (Abies grandis Lindl.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) planted on former agricultural land at four different sites in Denmark. The sites differ in soil characteristics and represent two texture classes (loamy sand and sandy loam). Soil pH and soil organic matter content was measured in the 16 stands and soil solution was isolated by centrifugation from three depths at four different occasions. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), pH in the soil solution and the soil solution concentrations (availability) of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined. Analysis of variance showed that the tree species affects soil pH and organic matter content in the topsoil, but not in the lower horizons. Norway spruce and grand fir acidify more than beech and oak, and the highest amount of accumulated soil organic matter is in the topsoil under Norway spruce. The effects of tree species on soil solution pH and DOC resemble the effect on soil pH and organic matter content. Grand fir enhances the solubility of Cd and Zn in the topsoil with the lower solubility found under beech and oak and Norway spruce enhances the solubility of Cu, Ni and Pb in the top horizons. The lowest solubility of Ni and Pb is found under beech and oak, whereas the lowest Cu concentrations in the soil solution are found under grand fir. After 34 years of afforestation no effects of tree species on the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil solution from the C-horizons were found. The tree species effect on the concentration of Cd, Cu and Ni in the soil solution depends on the soil characteristics with the higher concentrations found in sandy loam soils, whereas no effect of site on the solution concentration was found for Pb and Zn. It was not possible to find a clear correlation between the soil solution concentrations of heavy metals, pH and DOC concentration.

The influence of various fertilization treatments on the availability of N and P in the forest floor was studied in a Danish Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stand. The treatments included fertilization with N alone in two doses, N combined with lime and other essential nutrients, and lastly lime and nutrients other than N. We tested the hypotheses that fertilization with N alone would increase the availability of N and P in forest floors, and that fertilization with N in combination with lime and other nutrients would further increase N and P availability. Extractable and mineralizable NH 4 –N, NO 3 –N, and PO 4 –P 2 and 3 years after application of fertilizers were the indicators of N and P availability. Microbial activity as reflected by basal respiration rates was not affected by any of the fertilization treatments. The extractable and mineralizable amounts of N both indicated that N fertilization did not increase the availability of N in forest floors. Combined fertilization with N and other essential nutrients including lime reduced N availability, and application of lime and other nutrients than N resulted in the lowest N availability of all treatments. Nitrification rates were, however, increased after application of the highest amount of N and after application of lime. The replication over 2 years showed a consistent pattern, and treatment responses mainly occurred in the LF layer of forest floors. Phosphorus availability increased following liming and fertilization with nutrients other than N; this occurred in the H layer of forest floors. The results did not support the hypothesis that N fertilization increases N availability in the forest floor. There was also no evidence of a sustained positive effect on N availability of combined fertilization with N, lime, and other nutrients. In fact, N availability was reduced by the application of other nutrients and lime, whereas the study suggests that this treatment may positively affect P availability in a longer-term perspective.

Tropical forests are a major reservoir of biodiversity and carbon (C), playing a pivotal role in global ecosystem function and climate regulation. However, most of the tropical forests, especially Bornean forests in Southeast Asia, are under intense pressure and threatened by anthropogenic activities such as logging, mining industry, agriculture and conversion to industrial plantation. In 2010, the area of production forests in Borneo was 26.8 million ha (approx. 36% of the total land area of Borneo) including 18 million ha (approx. 24%) of logged forests. Production forests are thus emerging as a dominant land-use, playing a crucial role in trading-off provision of goods and maintenance of ecosystem services, such as C and biodiversity retention.Selective logging is known to reduce both above- and below-ground biomass through the removal of a few large trees, while increasing deadwood stocks through collateral damages. By creating large gaps in the canopy, microclimates in the understory and on the forest floor change locally speeding up the decomposition of litter and organic matter. The extent of incidental damages, canopy openness, as well as the speed of C recovery, was shown to be primarily related to logging intensity. However, empirical evaluations of the long-term effect of logging intensity on C balance in production forests remain rare.The present thesis aims to assess the long-term effect of logging intensity on C sequestration in a north Bornean Dipterocarp forests (Malinau District, North Kalimantan) logged in 1999/2000. Five main C pools, namely above-ground (AGC) and below-ground (BGC) carbon in living trees, deadwood, litter, and soil organic carbon (SOC) were estimated along a logging intensity gradient (ranging from 0 to 57% of initial biomass removed).Our result showed that total C stocks 16 years after logging, ranged from 218-554 Mg C ha-1 with an average of 314 Mg C ha-1. A difference of 95 Mg C ha-1 was found between low logging intensity (19%). Most C (approx. 77%) was found in living trees, followed by soil (15%), deadwood (6%), and a minor fraction in litter (1%). The imprint of logging intensity was still detectable 16 years after logging, and logging intensity thus was the main driver explaining the reduction of AGC>20, BGC>20, deadwood, and total C stocks and an increase in deadwood. Solely, logging intensity explained 61%, 63%, 38%, and 48% of variations of AGC>20, BGC>20, deadwood, and total C stocks, respectively. Logging intensity also significantly reduced SOC stocks in the upper 30 cm layer. For total SOC stocks (0-100 cm), the negative influence of logging intensity was still perceptible, being significant in conjunction with other variables.Our results quantify the long-term effect of logging on forest C stocks, especially on AGC and deadwood. High logging intensity (50% reduction of initial biomass) reduced total C stocks by 27%. AGC recovery was lower in high logging intensity plots, suggesting lowered forest resilience to logging.
