Abstract

Bidirectional recurrent neural networks (RNN) are trained to predict both in the positive and negative time directions simultaneously. They have not been used commonly in unsupervised tasks, because a probabilistic interpretation of the model has been difficult. Recently, two different frameworks, GSN and NADE, provide a connection between reconstruction and probabilistic modeling, which makes the interpretation possible. As far as we know, neither GSN or NADE have been studied in the context of time series before. As an example of an unsupervised task, we study the problem of filling in gaps in high-dimensional time series with complex dynamics. Although unidirectional RNNs have recently been trained successfully to model such time series, inference in the negative time direction is non-trivial. We propose two probabilistic interpretations of bidirectional RNNs that can be used to reconstruct missing gaps efficiently. Our experiments on text data show that both proposed methods are much more accurate than unidirectional reconstructions, although a bit less accurate than a computationally complex bidirectional Bayesian inference on the unidirectional RNN. We also provide results on music data for which the Bayesian inference is computationally infeasible, demonstrating the scalability of the proposed methods.

Abstract

Abstract Childhood aggressive behavior (AGG) has a substantial heritability of around 50%. Here we present a genome-wide association meta-analysis (GWAMA) of childhood AGG, in which all phenotype measures across childhood ages from multiple assessors were included. We analyzed phenotype assessments for a total of 328 935 observations from 87 485 children aged between 1.5 and 18 years, while accounting for sample overlap. We also meta-analyzed within subsets of the data, i.e., within rater, instrument and age. SNP-heritability for the overall meta-analysis (AGGoverall) was 3.31% (SE = 0.0038). We found no genome-wide significant SNPs for AGGoverall. The gene-based analysis returned three significant genes: ST3GAL3 (P = 1.6E–06), PCDH7 (P = 2.0E–06), and IPO13 (P = 2.5E–06). All three genes have previously been associated with educational traits. Polygenic scores based on our GWAMA significantly predicted aggression in a holdout sample of children (variance explained = 0.44%) and in retrospectively assessed childhood aggression (variance explained = 0.20%). Genetic correlations (r g ) among rater-specific assessment of AGG ranged from r g = 0.46 between self- and teacher-assessment to r g = 0.81 between mother- and teacher-assessment. We obtained moderate-to-strong r g s with selected phenotypes from multiple domains, but hardly with any of the classical biomarkers thought to be associated with AGG. Significant genetic correlations were observed with most psychiatric and psychological traits (range $$\left| {r_g} \right|$$ r g : 0.19–1.00), except for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Aggression had a negative genetic correlation (r g = ~−0.5) with cognitive traits and age at first birth. Aggression was strongly genetically correlated with smoking phenotypes (range $$\left| {r_g} \right|$$ r g : 0.46–0.60). The genetic correlations between aggression and psychiatric disorders were weaker for teacher-reported AGG than for mother- and self-reported AGG. The current GWAMA of childhood aggression provides a powerful tool to interrogate the rater-specific genetic etiology of AGG.

Abstract

Abstract Background Association of physiological recovery with nutrition has scarcely been studied. We investigated whether physiological recovery during sleep relates to eating habits, i.e., eating behaviour and diet quality. Methods Cross-sectional baseline analysis of psychologically distressed adults with overweight (N = 252) participating in a lifestyle intervention study in three Finnish cities. Recovery measures were based on sleep-time heart rate variability (HRV) measured for 3 consecutive nights. Measures derived from HRV were 1) RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences) indicating the parasympathetic activation of the autonomic nervous system and 2) Stress Balance (SB) indicating the temporal ratio of recovery to stress. Eating behaviour was measured with questionnaires (Intuitive Eating Scale, Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, Health and Taste Attitude Scales, ecSatter Inventory™). Diet quality was quantified using questionnaires (Index of Diet Quality, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Consumption) and 48-h dietary recall. Abstract

Background: Gastric fluid plays a key role in food digestion and drug dissolution, therefore, the amount of gastric fluid present in a fasted state may influence subsequent digestion and drug delivery. We aimed to describe intra‐ and interindividual variation in fasted gastric content volume (FGCV) and to determine the association with age, sex, and body size characteristics. Methods: Data from 24 MRI studies measuring FGCV in healthy, mostly young individuals after an overnight fast were pooled. The analysis included 366 participants who had up to 6 repeated measurements, with a total of 870 measurements. Linear mixed model analysis was performed to calculate intra‐ and interindividual variability and to assess the effects of age, sex, weight, height, weight*height as a proxy for body size, and body mass index (BMI). Results: FGCV ranged from 0 to 156 mL, with a mean (± SD) value of 33 ± 25 mL. The overall coefficient of variation within the study population was 75.6%, interindividual SD was 15 mL, and the intraindividual SD was 19 mL. Age, weight, height, weight*height, and BMI had no effect on FGCV. Women had lower volumes compared to men (MD: −6 mL), when corrected for the aforementioned factors. Conclusion: FGCV is highly variable, with higher intraindividual compared to interindividual variability, indicating that FGCV is subject to day‐to‐day and within‐day variation and is not a stable personal characteristic. Abstract

Very few genetic variants have been associated with depression and neuroticism, likely because of limitations on sample size in previous studies. Subjective well-being, a phenotype that is genetically correlated with both of these traits, has not yet been studied with genome-wide data. We conducted genome-wide association studies of three phenotypes: subjective well-being (n = 298,420), depressive symptoms (n = 161,460), and neuroticism (n = 170,911). We identify 3 variants associated with subjective well-being, 2 variants associated with depressive symptoms, and 11 variants associated with neuroticism, including 2 inversion polymorphisms. The two loci associated with depressive symptoms replicate in an independent depression sample. Joint analyses that exploit the high genetic correlations between the phenotypes (|ρ^| ≈ 0.8) strengthen the overall credibility of the findings and allow us to identify additional variants. Across our phenotypes, loci regulating expression in central nervous system and adrenal or pancreas tissues are strongly enriched for association.

Abstract

We present optical and near infrared (NIR) imaging data of the radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0323+342, which shows intense and variable gamma-ray activity discovered by the Fermi satellite with the Large Area Telescope. NIR and optical images are used to investigate the structural properties of the host galaxy of 1H 0323+342; this together with optical spectroscopy allowed us to examine its black hole mass. Based on the 2D multiwavelength surface brightness modeling, we find that, statistically, the best model fit is a combination of a nuclear component and a S\'ersic profile (n~2.8). However, the presence of a disc component (with a small bulge n~1.2) remains also a possibility and cannot be ruled out with the present data. Although at first glance a spiral-arm like structure is revealed in our images, a 2D Fourier analysis of the imagery suggests that such structure corresponds to an asymmetric ring, likely associated to a recent violent dynamical interaction. Abstract

Recently, the relation between the masses of the black hole ($M_{BH}$) and the host galaxy ($M_{host}$) in quasars has been probed down to the parameter space of $M_{BH}\sim10^8 M_\odot$ and $M_{host}\sim10^{11} M_\odot$ at z $<$ 0.5. In this study, we have investigated the $M_{BH}$ - $M_{host}$ log-linear relation for a sample of 37 quasars with low black hole masses ($10^7 M_\odot < M_{BH} < 10^{8.3} M_\odot$) at 0.5 $<$ z $<$ 1.0. The black hole masses were derived using virial mass estimates from SDSS optical spectra. For 25 quasars, we detected the presence of the host galaxy from deep near-infrared H-band imaging, whereas upper limits for the host galaxy luminosity (mass) were estimated for the 12 unresolved quasars. We combined our previous studies with the results from this work to create a sample of 89 quasars at z $<$ 1.0 having a large range of black hole masses ($10^7 M_\odot < M_{BH} < 10^{10} M_\odot$) and host galaxy masses ($10^{10} M_\odot < M_{host} < 10^{13} M_\odot$). Most of the quasars at the low mass end lie below the extrapolation of the local relation. This apparent break in the linearity of the entire sample is due to increasing fraction of disc-dominated host galaxies in the low-mass quasars. After correcting for the disc component, and considering only the bulge component, the bilinear regression for the entire quasar sample holds over 3.5 dex in both the black hole mass and the bulge mass, and is in very good agreement with the local relation. Abstract

We study the environments of low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars based on a large and homogeneous dataset from the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have compared the < 1 Mpc scale envi- ronments of 302 quasars that were resolved in our recent study to those of 288 inactive galaxies with closely matched redshifts. Crucially, the lu- minosities of the inactive galaxies and the quasar host galaxies are also closely matched, unlike in most previous studies. The environmental overdensities were studied by measuring the num- ber density of galaxies within a projected distance of 200 kpc to 1 Mpc. The galaxy number density of the quasar environments is comparable to that of the inactive galaxies with similar luminosities, both classes of ob- jects showing significant excess compared to the background galaxy density for distances < 400 kpc. There is no significant dependence of the galaxy number density on redshift, quasar or host galaxy luminosity, black hole mass or radio loudness. This suggests that the fueling and triggering of the nuclear activity is only weakly dependent on the local environment of quasars, and the quasar phase may be a short-lived common phase in the life cycle of all massive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 pages

Abstract

Abstract The role of metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a preceding metabolic state for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is widely recognised. To accumulate knowledge of the pathological mechanisms behind the condition at the methylation level, we conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of MetS and its components, testing 1187 individuals of European ancestry for approximately 470 000 methylation sites throughout the genome. Methylation site cg19693031 in gene TXNIP —previously associated with type 2 diabetes, glucose and lipid metabolism, associated with fasting glucose level (P = 1.80 × 10−8). Cg06500161 in gene ABCG1 associated both with serum triglycerides (P = 5.36 × 10−9) and waist circumference (P = 5.21 × 10−9). The previously identified type 2 diabetes–associated locus cg08309687 in chromosome 21 associated with waist circumference for the first time (P = 2.24 × 10−7). Furthermore, a novel HDL association with cg17901584 in chromosome 1 was identified (P = 7.81 × 10−8). Our study supports previous genetic studies of MetS, finding that lipid metabolism plays a key role in pathology of the syndrome. We provide evidence regarding a close interplay with glucose metabolism. Finally, we suggest that in attempts to identify methylation loci linking separate MetS components, cg19693031 appears to represent a strong candidate.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Tumour-promoting inflammation is a "hallmark" of cancer and conventional epidemiological studies have reported links between various inflammatory markers and cancer risk. The causal nature of these relationships and, thus, the suitability of these markers as intervention targets for cancer prevention is unclear. METHODS: We meta-analysed 6 genome-wide association studies of circulating inflammatory markers comprising 59,969 participants of European ancestry. We then used combined cis-Mendelian randomization and colocalisation analysis to evaluate the causal role of 66 circulating inflammatory markers in risk of 30 adult cancers in 338,294 cancer cases and up to 1,238,345 controls. Genetic instruments for inflammatory markers were constructed using genome-wide significant (P < 5.0 × 10-8) cis-acting SNPs (i.e., in or ±250 kb from the gene encoding the relevant protein) in weak linkage disequilibrium (LD, r2 < 0.10). Effect estimates were generated using inverse-variance weighted random-effects models and standard errors were inflated to account for weak LD between variants with reference to the 1000 Genomes Phase 3 CEU panel. A false discovery rate (FDR)-corrected P-value ("q-value") <0.05 was used as a threshold to define "strong evidence" to support associations and 0.05 ≤ q-value < 0.20 to define "suggestive evidence". A colocalisation posterior probability (PPH4) >70% was employed to indicate support for shared causal variants across inflammatory markers and cancer outcomes. Findings were replicated in the FinnGen study and then pooled using meta-analysis. 132. Who Are the Victims? : Scrutinizing the Discursive Representation of Victims in UN Measures Addressing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by Peacekeepers and Personnel

Abstract

The purpose of the United Nations (UN) peace operations is to help states navigate a path towards stability and sustainable peace, yet sexual exploitation and abuse perpetrated by the peacekeepers and other personnel is often an unintended consequence of the missions. Though the UN has employed several victim-centred measures to address the issue, peacebuilding practices often employ a simplistic discourse about the victims that recognizes only certain type of ‘ideal’ victims. It risks disregarding the different conceptualisations of justice that victims have, along with their individual wants and needs. Leaning on van Dijk’s view on social power that deems institutions as locations producing dominant discourses and influencing people’s minds, it is crucial to study which discourses the UN engages with. Thus, through a methodological combination of critical discourse analysis and policy analysis, this study scrutinizes the discourses about the victims present in the resolutions and training materials that specifically apply a victim-centred approach. The findings indicate that the discourses entail characteristics of both ideal and complex political victim discourses, and that above all, the UN positions itself as the saviour of the victims. As this discourse is likely to continue reproducing power imbalances that place victims into a dependant position, this study emphasises a serious need for re-evaluation of the UN’s own discursive positioning.

133. Cerebrospinal and Brain Proteins Implicated in Neuropsychiatric and Risk Factor Traits:Evidence from Mendelian Randomization

Abstract

Neuropsychiatric disorders present a global health challenge, necessitating an understanding of their molecular mechanisms for therapeutic development. Using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, this study explored associations between genetically predicted levels of 173 proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and 25 in the brain with 14 neuropsychiatric disorders and risk factors. Follow-up analyses assessed consistency across plasma protein levels and gene expression in various brain regions. Proteins were instrumented using tissue-specific genetic variants, and colocalization analysis confirmed unbiased gene variants. Consistent MR and colocalization evidence revealed that lower cortical expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 8, coupled higher abundance in the CSF and plasma, associated with lower fluid intelligence scores and decreased bipolar disorder risk. Additionally, elevated apolipoprotein-E2 and hepatocyte growth factor-like protein in the CSF and brain were related to reduced leisure screen time and lower odds of physical activity, respectively. Furthermore, elevated CSF soluble tyrosine-protein kinase receptor 1 level increased liability to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia alongside lower fluid intelligence scores. This research provides genetic evidence supporting novel tissue-specific proteomic targets for neuropsychiatric disorders and their risk factors. Further exploration is necessary to understand the underlying biological mechanisms and assess their potential for therapeutic intervention. 135. “I Think It’s the Individual Encounters and Being Able to Impact Another Person’s Life in Some Way” - Volunteering with Undocumented Migrants: Exploring the Motivations and Perceived Effects on Health and Well-Being

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Volunteering is characterised by an obligation-free action that occurs typically in an organisational setting. Its goals are to improve the health and well-being of others. Volunteering has the possibility of increasing both mental and physical health of volunteers. Values are the guiding motivators to applying for volunteering activities. The thesis aimed to understand why individuals chose to volunteer and investigate the impacts on volunteers’ well-being when participating in activities relating to undocumented migrants’ health. Methods: Data was collected through eight in-depth interviews. Participants were from different organisations volunteering with causes related to undocumented migrants’ health. The data was analysed by using qualitative content analysis. Results: The data analysis resulted in two overarching themes: 1) Finding volunteering as a meaningful engagement for societal impact, and 2) Recognising the impacts volunteering has on both the beneficiaries and the volunteers’ well-being. These themes were formed from five different categories; Believing that healthcare is a fundamental right for all, Sense of social justice guiding the reasons for volunteering, included in the first theme, and Acknowledgement of positive impacts volunteering has on their health and well-being, Recognising the importance of community and organisational support, and Challenges and concerns faced building up as stress factors included in the second theme. Conclusion: Participants motivation to volunteer stemmed from their values obtained from life experiences, with strong beliefs in healthcare being a fundamental right for all. Through volunteering, they hoped to address existing systematic barriers experienced by undocumented migrants. Participants reported volunteering having positive impacts on personal growth, learning, feelings of fulfilment, emphasizing the importance of sense of belonging. Challenges experienced led to feelings of stress, What are the motivating factors guiding volunteer behaviour and does volunteering lead to positive experiences and impact on health and well-being? Why do people want to give their time and efforts for individuals without any payment, reward, or obligation? Volunteering has a great number of beneficial effects on health and well-being (Yeung et al., 2017), which generally are not the reasons people choose to volunteer. This thesis sought to understand why individuals chose to volunteer with specific causes and investigate the effects volunteering had on participants health and well-being in the context of Finland. By understanding the motives to volunteer with specific causes, this thesis constitutes to a bigger picture of insight for practice initiatives and policies aimed for improving public health. By exploring the experienced health effects of volunteers, this serves as a base of understanding how volunteering benefits both the volunteers itself and the people subjected to volunteering. This thesis found that motivating factors were underlying values driving them to make societal differences by advocating for healthcare access for all, desiring to address the systematic barriers in Finnish society, raising concern about possible effects the law renewal has on healthcare access, as well as concerns about experiences of discrimination. In addition, this project found that through volunteering, participants experienced positive impacts on their health and well-being by learning opportunities, personal growth, social interactions and fellowship, sense of belonging, and through building trust with other volunteers and undocumented migrants. Challenges faced were due to fluctuating enthusiasm, limited resources, and time, leading to increase in stress and feelings of insufficiency. Abstract

We present a photometrical and morphological study of the properties of low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars based on a large and homogeneous dataset of objects derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR7). This study over number by a factor about 5 any other previous study of QSO host galaxies at low redshift undertaken either on ground or on space surveys. We used about 400 quasars that were imaged in the SDSS Stripe82 that is up to 2 mag deeper than standard Sloan images. For these quasars we undertake a study of the host galaxies and of their environments. In this paper we report the results for the quasar hosts. We are able to detect the host galaxy for more than 3/4 of the whole dataset and characterise the properties of their hosts. We found that QSO hosts are dominated by luminous galaxies of absolute magnitude M*-3 < M(R) < M*. For the unresolved objects we computed a upper limit to the host luminosity. For each well resolved quasar we are also able to characterise the morphology of the host galaxy that turn out to be more complex than what found in previous studies. QSO are hosted in a variety of galaxies from pure ellipticals to complex/composite morphologies that combine spheroids, disk, lens and halo. The black hole mass of the quasar, estimated from the spectral properties of the nuclei, are poorly correlated with the total luminosity of the host galaxy. However, taking into account only the bulge component we found a significant correlation between the BH mass and the bulge luminosity of the host., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 21 pages

Abstract

Substantial genetic correlations have been reported across psychiatric disorders and numerous cross-disorder genetic variants have been detected. To identify the genetic variants underlying general psychopathology in childhood, we performed a genome-wide association study using a total psychiatric problem score. We analyzed 6,844,199 common SNPs in 38,418 school-aged children from 20 population-based cohorts participating in the EAGLE consortium. The SNP heritability of total psychiatric problems was 5.4% (SE = 0.01) and two loci reached genome-wide significance: rs10767094 and rs202005905. We also observed an association of SBF2, a gene associated with neuroticism in previous GWAS, with total psychiatric problems. The genetic effects underlying the total score were shared with common psychiatric disorders only (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, insomnia) (rG > 0.49), but not with autism or the less common adult disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or eating disorders) (rG < 0.01). Importantly, the total psychiatric problem score also showed at least a moderate genetic correlation with intelligence, educational attainment, wellbeing, smoking, and body fat (rG > 0.29). The results suggest that many common genetic variants are associated with childhood psychiatric symptoms and related phenotypes in general instead of with specific symptoms. Further research is needed to establish causality and pleiotropic mechanisms between related traits.

Abstract

We present ultraviolet (UV) observations of six nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, three of which were also observed in the near-IR (NIR) with Wide-Field Camera 3. UV observations with the Swift satellite, as well as ground-based optical and NIR data provide complementary information. The combined data set covers the wavelength range 0.2-2 μm. By also including archival data of SN 2014J, we analyse a sample spanning observed colour excesses up to E(B - V) = 1.4 mag. We study the wavelength-dependent extinction of each individual SN and find a diversity of reddening laws when characterized by the total-to-selective extinction RV. In particular, we note that for the two SNe with E(B - V) ≳ 1 mag, for which the colour excess is dominated by dust extinction, we find RV = 1.4 ± 0.1 and RV = 2.8 ± 0.1. Adding UV photometry reduces the uncertainty of fitted RV by ~50 per cent allowing us to also measure RV of individual low-extinction objects which point to a similar diversity, currently not accounted for in the analyses when SNe Ia are used for studying the expansion history of the Universe.

141. 'English as Corporate Language' in the Multilingual Reality of Multinational Companies

Abstract

This conceptual paper advances the notion of "English as corporate language" in the multilingual reality of multinational companies (MNC) with novel insights from the English as lingua franca (ELF) paradigm of sociolinguistics. Inspired by Goffman, Erving. 1959. "The presentation of self in everyday life." New York: Doubleday. dramaturgical metaphor of social life, we develop the notion of English as corporate language by making a distinction between the frontstage official language used in corporate communication and backstage working language used in interactions among MNC employees. We argue that the former approaches the notion of English as a native language and the latter represents ELF in the business domain (BELF); they are different in terms of understanding language competence, multilingualism and role of language in building legitimacy. Our conclusions imply first, that the frontstage English may not always be accessible to the backstage BELF users, due to which employees may feel disadvantaged or disempowered. Second, the use of formal language testing in recruitment and performance appraisal may transform into a gate-keeping mechanism that leads to power inequalities. In our recommendations, we call for an emancipatory language policy accepting different standards of English for different positions and adopting ideas of the Plain Language initiative to better reach all MNC employees.

Abstract

The dimensionless isotope mass scaling experiment between pure Deuterium and pure Tritium plasmas with matched $\rho^*$ , $\nu^*$ , β _n , q and $T_e/T_i$ has been achieved in JET L-mode with dominant electron heating (NBI+ohmic) conditions. 28% higher scaled energy confinement time $B_t\tau_{E,\mathrm{th}}/A$ is found in favour of the Tritium plasma. This can be cast in the form of the dimensionless energy confinement scaling law as $\Omega_i \tau_{E,\mathrm{th}} \sim A^{0.48 \pm 0.16}$ . This significant isotope mass scaling is consequently seen in the scaled one-fluid heat diffusion coefficient $A \chi_{\mathrm{eff}}/B_t$ which is around 50% lower in the Tritium plasma throughout the whole plasma radius. The isotope mass dependence in the particle transport channel is negligible, supported also by the perturbative particle transport analysis with gas puff modulation. The comparison of the edge particle fuelling or ionisation profiles from the EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations show that the absolute density differences that are necessary for the dimensionless match in the confined plasma dominate over any isotope mass dependencies of particle fuelling and ionization profiles at the plasma edge. Local GENE simulation results indicate a mild anti-gyroBohm effect at $\rho_\mathrm{tor}$ = 0.6 and thereby a small isotope mass dependence in favour of Tritium on heat transport and a negligible effect on particle transport. A significant fraction of the isotope scaling and reduced heat transport observed in the Tritium plasma is not captured in the GENE and ASTRA-TGLF-SAT2 simulations by simply changing the isotope mass for the same input profiles.

Abstract

After the second Deuterium–Tritium Campaign (DTE2) in the JET tokamak with the ITER-Like Wall (ILW) and full tritium campaigns that preceded and followed after the DTE2, a sequence of fuel recovery methods was applied to promote tritium removal from wall components. The sequence started with several days of baking of the main chamber walls at 240 °C and at 320 °C. Subsequently, baking was superimposed with Ion-Cyclotron Wall Conditioning (ICWC) and Glow Discharge Conditioning (GDC) cleaning cycles in deuterium. Diverted plasma operation in deuterium with different strike point configurations, including a Raised Inner Strike Point (RISP) configuration, and with different plasma heating—Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency (ICRF) and Neutral Beam Injection (NBI)—concluded the cleaning sequence. Tritium content in plasma and in the pumped gas was monitored throughout the experiment. The applied fuel recovery methods allowed reducing the residual tritium content in deuterium NBI-heated plasmas to about 0.1% as deduced from neutron rate measurements. This value is well below the requirement of 1% set by the maximum 14 MeV fusion neutron budget allocated in the ensuing deuterium plasma campaign. The quantified tritium removal over the course of the experiment was $\left( {13.4 \pm 0.7} \right) \times {10^{22}}$ atoms or $\left( {0.67 \pm 0.03} \right)$ g with ∼58% attributed to baking, ∼12.5% to ICWC, ∼26% to GDC, and ∼3.5% to first low power RISP plasmas. The experimentally estimated amount of removed tritium is in good agreement with long-term tritium accounting by the JET tritium reprocessing plant, in which the unaccounted amount was reduced by $0.71$ g after the cleaning experiment.

Abstract

We present first results from our study of the properties of ~400 low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars, based on a large homogeneous dataset derived from the Stripe 82 area of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). For this sky region, deep (r~22.4) u,g,r,i,z images are available, up to ~2 mag deeper than standard SDSS images, allowing us to study both the host galaxies and the Mpc-scale environments of the quasars. This sample greatly outnumbers previous studies of low redshift quasar hosts, from the ground or from space. Here we report the preliminary results for the quasar host galaxies. We are able to resolve the host galaxy in ~80 % of the quasars. The quasar hosts are luminous and large, the majority of them in the range between M*-1 and M*-2, and with ~10 kpc galaxy scale-lengths. Almost half of the host galaxies are best fit with an exponential disk, while the rest are spheroid-dominated. There is a reasonable relation between the central black hole mass and the host galaxy luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.
