107. Phytochemical characterization and biological activities of butanolic extract of aerial parts of Tetraclinis articulata from Algeria

Abstract

Tetraclinis articulata is a forest plant species that is widely used in North African folk medicine due to its immense bioactive potential. The objective of the present study was to characterize flavonoids present in butanolic extract of aerial part of T. articulata (TABE) and to test its antibacterial synergistic effect, anticoagulant and antioxidant properties. The analysis of the TABE by colorimetric tests and TLC revealed the presence of flavonoids. The dosage showed that the proportions of total flavonoids and flavonols were 19.25 ± 0.07 and 13.6 ± 1.6 mg QE/g DW, respectively. Besides, the greatest antibacterial activity of the extract was shown against S. aureus. In contrast no effect was observed against E. coli. Furthermore, the most synergistic potential inhibitory effect was noted in the case of E. coli, when the extract was combined with penicillin. In addition, the MICs was determined used microdilution method, the values obtained were ranged from 2.5 to 20 mg/ml. Moreover, the in vitro anticoagulant activity was assessed by PT and KCT tests. The results showed interesting anticoagulant activity, with KCT value of 55.4 s which is superior to that obtained by the anticoagulant drug –Lovenox- (39.37s). The antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro using DPPH• method. The result expressed in terms of IC50 was found to be 0.04 mg/ml. To conclude, the TABE constitutes a valuable source of anticoagulant, antioxidant and antibacterial synergism metabolites, which makes it a potential candidate to isolate responsible flavonoids and to develop novel pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract

Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a well-known apoptosis inducer and a potential anticancer agent. When caspases and inhibitors of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) are inhibited, TRAIL induces necroptosis. Molecular mechanisms of necroptosis rely on kinase activation, and on the formation of a necrosome complex, bringing together the receptor-interacting protein kinases 1 and 3 (RIPK1, RIPK3), and the mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL). In this study, mass spectrometry approach allowed to identify the tripartite motif containing 21 (TRIM21), an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase as a new partner of the endogenous TRAIL-induced necrosome. Alteration of TRIM21 expression level, obtained by transient transfection of HT29 or HaCat cells with TRIM21-targeted siRNAs or cDNA plasmids coding for TRIM21 demonstrated that TRIM21 is a positive regulator of TRAIL-induced necroptosis. Furthermore, the invalidation of TRIM21 expression in HT29 cells by CRISPR-Cas9 technology also decreased cell sensitivity to TRAIL-induced necroptosis, a shortcoming associated with a reduction in MLKL phosphorylation, the necroptosis executioner. Thus, TRIM21 emerged as a new partner of the TRAIL-induced necrosome that positively regulates the necroptosis process.

111. A Unidimensional Instrument for Measuring Internal Marketing Concept in the Higher Education Sector: IM-11 Scale

Abstract

Purpose: Although the existing internal marketing (IM) scales include various scale items to measure employee motivation, they fall short of incorporating the needs and expectations of service sector employees. Hence, the purpose of this study is to present a practical instrument designed to measure the IM construct in the higher education sector. Design/methodology/approach: Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in this empirical study. A qualitative method was used to develop the scale items to measure the IM construct and a quantitative method was used to test the scale developed in the higher education sector. The study sample included n = 240 academic staff from a large university. Both exploratory (EFA) and the confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were used to confirm the dimensionality of the IM scale developed. Findings: The study results showed that all items in the measurement scale were loaded on a single dimension that represents the IM construct in the higher education sector. The psychometric properties of the developed scale (IM-11) met and exceeded the expected criteria cited in the literature. Research limitations/implications: The IM-11 scale presented in this study offers a practical tool for higher education administrators in their efforts to measure the needs and expectations of their employees. Moreover, this knowledge should provide a framework for the administration to develop strategies for employee motivation, job satisfaction and performance and assume additional responsibilities in their efforts to serving their external customers better. Sample size, cultural factors and the complex nature of university academic staff limit one's ability to generalize these results to broader populations. Originality/value: In line with the information provided in the literature on IM, this study developed a simple and practical instrument to measure the IM construct for an academic unit within a university.

يركز هذا البحث على ناحية بيئة واقتصادية، حيث يعتمد على استخدام عشبة زهرة النيل الضارة كمادة فعالة في انتاج البوليمير الحيوي بولي هيدروكسي بوتيرات "polyhydroxybutyrate PHB" بواسطة البكتريا "Bacillus subtilis". تمت معالجة العينات وتهضميها لاستخلاص البوليمير بولي هيدروكسي بوتيرات PHB)) وذلك باستخدام طريقة الكلوروفورم. نفّذت بعض الاختبارات لتؤكد هوية هذا البوليمير كقياس درجة انصهار المنتج ودراسة المجموعات الوظيفية لـ PHB المستخلص باستخدام مطيافية الأشعة تحت الحمراء (FTIR). بينت النتائج تطابق اختبارات البوليمير المستخلص من عشبة زهرة النيل مع اختبارات البوليمير PHB القياسي مما يبين أهمية هذا البحث في التوصل لطريقة للتخلص من هذا العشب الضار الذي يعد مشكلة بيئية وعبئ اقتصادي كبير عن طريق استثماره في انتاج البوليميرPHB الحيوي.

113. Ethical Evaluations of Business Students in an Emerging Market: Effects of Ethical Sensitivity, Cultural Values, Personality, and Religiosity

Abstract

Business ethics has become a very important concern in global business and understanding the effects of various factors on ethical judgments continues to attract research and practitioner attention. Using the Multidimensional Ethics Scale (MES, Reidenbach and Robin 1988) with its five generally accepted philosophical constructs, and vignettes developed by Cohen et al. (1996), current study investigates the relationship between cultural values, personality, religiosity and the ethical sensitivity of business students. We focus on a rapidly emerging country, Turkey, whose economic environment is similar to that of the most Western nations but with a significantly different background and cultural values. Data (n = 184) for the study is collected from a major university in the southeastern Turkey. Although some significant relationships are identified between ethical sensitivity and cultural values and personality, our study findings confirm that MES dimensions had the highest influence on ethical sensitivity levels of business students.

Abstract

تمَّ اختبار فعالية المبيدين فلوبندياميدflubendiamide ، وكلورانترانيليبرول chlorantraniliprole وجزيئات النانوسيليكا ضد حافرة أنفاق أوراق البندورة absoluta Tuta تحت ظروف البيت البلاستيكي، حيث استخدم المبيدان بالتراكيز المنصوح بها ( 0.4 غ/ ل و 0.31 مل/ ل ) والنانوسيليكا بالتركيز 500 ppm. أظهرت النتائج وجود فروق معنوية بين جميع المعاملات والشاهد ، من حيث عدد اليرقات الحية / النبات ، حيث بلغت فعالية المبيدينflubendiamide ، chlorantraniliprole 51.37 و 63.85 % بعد 7 أيام من الرشة الأولى ، ووصلت إلى52.33 و 69.95 بعد 7 أيام من الرشة الثانية على التوالي ، أما جزيئات النانوسيليكا فقد بلغت فعاليتها 36.14 و 55.15 على التوالي. خفضت جميع المعاملات عدد الثمار المصابة بفرق معنوي بالمقارنة مع الشاهد، حيث بلغت نسبة التخفيض 63.83% في معاملة flubendiamide و 64.62% في معاملة chlorantraniliprole و37.11% في المعاملة بجزيئات النانوسيليكا ، و ذلك في اليوم العاشر بعد الرشة الأولى ، ووصلت إلى 37.5، 58.7 ،34.81 % على التوالي بعد 9 أيام من الرشة الثانية. بينت النتائج فعالية كل من المبيد flubendiamide و chlorantraniliprole و جزيئات النانوسيليكا في تخفيض شدة الإصابة بالحافرة على الثمار، وقد بلغت 40 ، 26.3 و 23.2 % على التوالي بعد 10 أيام من الرشة الأولى بالمقارنة مع الشاهد ، ووصلت إلى 51.8، 76.8و 42.4 % بعد 9 أيام من الرشة الثانية بالمقارنة مع الشاهد أيضاً مع تفوق معاملة المبيد كلورانترانيليبرول chlorantraniliprole على بقية المعاملات.

119. Study of Changes in Fatty Acids Contents (ω3, ω6) and Chemical Quality Indicators in Frozen (Scomber japonicus) from the Marine Waters of Tartus

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the changes in fatty acids contents, and chemical quality indices in Scomber japonicus (one of the Syrian commercial marine fish species) during frozen storage at (-18 °C). Fish samples were randomly collected from landing sites along the coast of Tartus governorate and kept at (0-4) °C immediately after fishing. They were then transferred to the laboratory in less than an hour, and treated by special methods, and similar samples were frozen and stored at (-18°C). The edible muscles were analyzed of Fresh and frozen at consecutive time intervals: (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180) day. The results showed that Unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), ( EPA; C20:5 ω3) and (DHA; C22:6 ω3) acids were higher than Saturated fatty acids (SFA) in fresh samples, but after 120 day of frozen storage, this ratio reversed. The numbers expressing the value of (TBA), Peroxide value (PV), Free Fatty acids (FFA), and pH values, increased during frozen storage due to lipid oxidation. هدف البحث الحالي إلى تحديد التغيرات في محتوى الأحماض الدهنية ومؤشرات الجودة الكيميائية في لحم سمك السكمبري الشائع Scomber japonicus، الذي يعدّ أحد الأنواع السمكية البحرية السورية ذات الأهمية الاقتصادية أثناء التخزين بالتجميد على (-18) مْ، جٌمعت العينات السمكية بشكل عشوائي من مواقع الإنزال لشاطئ محافظة طرطوس ثم حٌفظت على درجات حرارة منخفضة (4-0) مْ بعد الصيد مباشرةً بانتظار نقلها إلى المخبر خلال أقل من ساعة، ومعاملتها بطرائق خاصة، ثم جمدّت وخزنت عينات مماثلة على (18-) مْ، وتم تحليل العضلات المأكولة فقط بالحالة الطازجة والمجمدة على فترات زمنية متتالية:(0، 30، 60، 90، 120، 180) يوماً من التجميد. أظهرت النتائج أن نسبة الأحماض الدهنية عدم التشبع (UFA)وبشكلٍ خاص محتواها من (EPA, C20:5, w3) . (w3 (DHA, C22:6, كانت أعلى من نسبة الأحماض الدهنية المشبعة(SFA) للعينات الطازجة، بينما لوحظ وجود معدل عكسي بنهاية مدة التجميد، زادت الأرقام المعبرة عن قيمة حامض الثيوباربتويريك(TBA) ، رقم البيروكسيد (PV)، الأحماض الدهنية الحرة (FFA)، رقم (pH) خلال مدة التجميد بسبب أكسدة الدهون.

Abstract

Background/Purpose: Most community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) are usually treated empirically. The knowledge of antibiotic resistance patterns of the microorganisms causing UTI is essential for defining the empirical treatment. Objective: The aim of the present study is to determine the distribution of bacterial strains isolated from lower UTIs and their resistance patterns against commonly used antimicrobial agents and treatment results in female patients. Subjects and Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of medical case records of 90 female patients with lower UTI for a period of 4 years from January 2013 to December 2016 in a tertiary care hospital in the Trakya region of Turkey. Results: The most common causative agent was Escherichia coli (66.6% of cases) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (16.6%). Fosfomycin was the most active agent against E. coli (resistant isolates: 5.5%), followed by nitrofurantoin (resistant isolates: 7.4%). Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) production was observed in 29 (32.2%) isolates (22 in E. coli, 6 in K. pneumoniae, and 1 in Enterobacter spp.). The antimicrobial resistance rates among ESBL-producing E. coli isolates for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, fosfomycin, and nitrofurantoin were 77.7%, 72.7%, 13.6%, and 18.2%, respectively (P < 0.05). The estimated microbiological eradication rates for nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin were 89.7% and 83.8%, respectively. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin may be considered for empirical therapy of lower UTIs in Trakya region of Turkey.

128. In vitro assessment of the bioactive potential of Artemisia campestris L. fractions growing in Khenchela (Algeria)

Abstract

In order to valorize Algerian medicinal plants, this work aims to characterize quantitatively and qualitatively Artemisia campestris L. fractions, a medicinal plant from the Aures-Algeria area, and investigate its biological activities in vitro. During preliminary phytochemical screening, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, reducing compounds, and coumarins were discovered. Total polyphenols and flavonoids are greater in the n-butanolic fraction than in ethyl acetate and petroleum ether. The resulting antioxidant capability was assessed in vitro using three methods: DPPH free radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide trapping, and iron reduction. The n-butanolic extract suppresses DPPH oxidation with an IC50 of 2.239±0.32mg/ml, which is comparable to that of standard (1.824±0.97mg/ml). Despite the fact that similar findings were seen in the neutralization of hydrogen peroxide and the iron chelating activity, The anti-inflammatory action was proven in vitro by inhibiting protein denaturation and increasing HRBC membrane stability (Human Red Blood Cells). The n-butanolic fraction was more effective than diclofenac in preventing BSA degradation. It also inhibited membrane hemolysis in human erythrocytes by up to 83%. Activated partial thromboplastin and prothrombin times were used to analyze extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathways in A. campestris in order to determine its anticoagulant activity. The n-butanol fraction had the greatest impact on PT and aPTT lengthening, with 75.2s and 351s at 3 mg/ml concentration, respectively. The n-butanolic fraction of the A. campestris aerial part exhibited antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities. As a result, it may be a viable natural resource for mitigating the impact of stress, which causes inflammatory and cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore Generation Z (Gen Z) consumers' sustainable consumption behaviors at a university campus by examining various antecedent and moderating influencers of their sustainable consumption behaviors. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research methodology is used in this study. A structured questionnaire was administered (n = 279) to young college students (Gen Z consumers in the context of this study) enrolled at a large state university in the USA. The structural equation model was used to test the hypothesized relationships in the conceptualized model. Findings: Study findings show that social responsibility (feelings, engagement and expectations) and external incentives (material and social) positively influence Gen Z consumers' sustainability interests, which in turn influences their sustainable consumption behaviors (actions). Collectivist cultural values did not appear to have any statistically significant effect on Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption interests. Moreover, learned helplessness, perceived barriers and the awareness of the consequences of sustainability consumption actions did not have any significant moderating effect on Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption behavior. Research limitations/implications: The questionnaire was only sent to students majoring in business degrees, which may limit the generalizability of this study to broader Gen Z consumer populations. Expanding this study to include non-business students may be valuable as a next step. Replicating this study in different cultural environments of international countries could enhance the relationships identified in this study. Practical implications: Consumer social responsibility education along with material and social incentives will encourage Gen Z consumers' participation in sustainable behaviors at college campuses. Originality/value: This research provides valuable insights into understanding the importance of consumer social responsibility and external incentives in influencing Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption intentions and behaviors. Abstract

In this paper, for partially observed Markov decision problems (POMDPs), we provide the convergence of a Q learning algorithm for control policies using a finite history of past observations and control actions, and consequentially, we establish near optimality of such limit Q functions under explicit filter stability conditions. We present explicit error bounds relating the approximation error to the length of the finite history window. We establish the convergence of such Q learning iterations under mild ergodicity assumptions on the state process during the exploration phase. We further show that the limit fixed point equation gives an optimal solution for an approximate belief Markov decision problem (MDP). We then provide bounds on the performance of the policy obtained using the limit Q values compared with the performance of the optimal policy for the POMDP, in which we also present explicit conditions using recent results on filter stability in controlled POMDPs. Whereas there exist many experimental results, (i) the rigorous asymptotic convergence (to an approximate MDP value function) for such finite memory Q learning algorithms and (ii) the near optimality with an explicit rate of convergence (in the memory size) under filter stability are results that are new to the literature to our knowledge. Abstract

Purpose: To examine brain diffusion characteristics in pediatric patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and an atlas-based anatomical analysis of the whole brain and to investigate whether these images have unique characteristics that can support functional diagnoses. Materials and Methods: Seventeen children with ADHD and ten control subjects (all age-matched) underwent MRI scans. The Institutional Ethics Board approved this study. Morphometric analysis was performed using MriStudio software. The diffusion images were normalized using a linear transformation, followed by large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM). For 189 parcellated brain regions, the volume, fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) were measured. Results: Children with ADHD were found to have increase in the body of lateral ventricle volumes compared to the control. Increased MD was found in the deep gray matter, amygdala, thalamus, substantia nigra, and also the cerebellum left and right side. Increased RD was found in the deep gray matter, caudate, thalamus, substantia nigra and hippocampus left and right side compared to the control. Significant elevated FA was found in the bilateral splenium of the corpus callosum in ADHD patients. Conclusion: Children with ADHD display abnormal diffusion characteristics and anatomical features compared to healthy controls. DTI can provide sensitive information on integrity of white matter (WM) and intra-WM structures in ADHD.
