101. The weak interactions from 1950 to 1960: a quantitative bibliometric study of the formation of a field.

Abstract: Background and introduction About ten years ago, a group of sociologists and scientists gathered at Cornell University in a new program of research designed to discover and validate new methods for studying the evolution and health of scientific fields using quantitative measures. The interests of the group's founders lay both in finding ways to obtain a better basic understanding of how scientific fields develop – how, for example, the social and intellectual aspects of a scientific community interact – and in producing work that might have an influence on the way in which science policy is formulated by showing policy analysts better ways of monitoring the outputs of science and relating them to the inputs. We believed that the best way to proceed with this program was to undertake several case studies of scientific specialties using teams of collaborators made up of sociologists and scientists familiar. with the specialties in question. We believed, further, that one case study should focus on a field with a strong and highly developed theoretical basis that also involved major experimental work. That meant a field like particle physics, and we thought that within particle physics the study of the weak interactions might be a manageable specialty on which to focus. A large and comprehensive data base was constructed, comprised of all serial articles published in the specialty from 1950 to 1975 (N = 5,765), and our own weak-interactions citation index was constructed from the refer ences that appear at the end of the serial articles. Over 80,000 references, originating in one of the articles in our weak-interactions bibliography (citing articles both within our bibliography and in other fields), make up our citation index. 102. Recollections on the establishment of the weak-interaction notion.

Abstract: Introduction I am very glad to have the opportunity to describe for this symposium some early, practically unknown, Dubna work on strange particles. It is quite natural that I would like people to be informed about some of my work, significant in my opinion, performed a long time ago, and the only way of fulfilling such a desire decently is to be invited to take part in a symposium. True, in his delightful talk on strange particles at the 1982 Paris colloquium on the history of particle physics, Murray Gell-Mann mentioned my work. I shall cover mainly Dubna work on new particles performed in 1951–5 in the context of the notion of weak interaction, a notion that was certainly not taken for granted in the early 1950s, but that had become one of my pet ideas as early as 1947. Nuclear β decay, the first known weak process, was discovered by Ernest Rutherford about eighty-five years ago. However, not every physicist knows that the notion of weak interaction, a conception much wider than that of the single process of β decay, came to be well established only in the 1950s, that is, about fifty years after the discovery of β rays and about forty years after James Chadwick's discovery of the continuous β spectrum. Here I shall present personal recollections about the way the notion of weak interaction was born and then became well established. Of course, my story is going to be neither objective nor complete. 103. From the 1940s into the 1950s.

Abstract: This brief memoir deals with some subjects I was involved with or that otherwise came to my notice during the period from July 1946 through June 1953. A memoir, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is a record of events “not purporting to be a complete history, but treating of such matters as come within the personal knowledge of the writer, or are obtained from certain particular sources of information.” During the last few years I have had occasion to consult numerous memoirs, some old, some recent, because I have been writing a book on the history of particles and fields. I was not surprised to find that I did not always agree with what those memoirs said (as, for example, in regard to the genesis of the neutral-K particle mixing idea). Nor did they always agree with each other. Such variants can be revealing, and sometimes even interesting, but should, of course, always take second place compared with the published scientific record. Now to July 1946. That was the time of the first international post–World War II physics conference, held at the Cavendish Laboratory. I was coauthor of two papers presented there. The first, written with Lamek Hulthen, dealt with calculations of n–p scattering up to 25 MeV. In this work, noninteger orbital angular momentum played the role of a variational parameter. This paper is of some interest because it was stimulated by nucleon–nucleon scattering experiments at the highest energy then reached. In September 1945, Rubby Sherr had scattered 25-MeV neutrons, produced at the Harvard cyclotron, off protons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

104. Strange particles.

Abstract: The earliest accelerator results involving a substantial number of strange particles were obtained at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, Long Island, New York, at the Cosmotron, beginning in 1954. I was fortunate to be a part of that work, which I shall now describe. By the time the 1954 Rochester conference took place, there appeared to be a number of distinct strange particles. Table 21.1 lists the strange particles as known in that year, my first at Brookhaven. Notice that there is an entry for neutral τ and for an anomalous θ0 that “could be a three-body decay.” Both Λ0 and θ0 were firmly established, and their properties were somewhat clearer than they had been in the past. The next few years saw things become clearer still, largely because of work done at the Brookhaven Cosmotron. Figure 21.1 shows the setup of experiments at the Cosmotron in that summer of 1954. There were pion beams for total-cross-section measurements with counters. The visual detectors were emulsions and cloud chambers; a few years later they had been displaced by bubble chambers. All those devices were set up to study strange-particle production cross sections and properties. Among other things, K- mesons were put into emulsion. John Hornbostel and Edward Salant showed that K- produce hyperons and estimated a geometric value for the interaction mean free path. In the early 1950s the most important experimental results were those of William B. Fowler, Ralph Shutt, Alan Thorndike, and William Whittemore with π- in a hydrogen diffusion chamber. 105. Strange particles: production by Cosmotron beams as observed in diffusion cloud chambers.

Abstract: The physicist's ability to study the properties of strange particles expanded greatly following the observation of machine-produced V particles. Protons were accelerated by the Cosmotron to 1 GeV in May 1952; however, by the time shielding was added and the target, beam, and detector equipment put in place, it was the spring of 1953. At this point, experimenters could begin to collect data. Among the first detectors to be used was the highpressure hydrogen diffusion cloud chamber with an 11,000-G magnetic field. In the first 4,000 photographs, with the chamber exposed to a high-energy neutron beam, several V particles popped up. Two of these had tracks that gave momentum and angle measurements of sufficient accuracy to be convincing. That led to the first studies exploiting the advantages the accelerator had over cosmic rays. In the summer of 1950, several groups were experimenting with continuously sensitive diffusion cloud chambers, and Ralph P. Shutt recognized their potential use for Cosmotron experiments, in particular if high-pressure hydrogen could be made to work. Great enthusiasm and a wide variety of skills existed at that time in Shutt's cloud-chamber group, and very shortly two 20-atm hydrogen diffusion chambers had been constructed. Through the effort of Gilberto Bernardini this equipment was moved to the Nevis cyclotron, where exposures to pion beams demonstrated the usefulness of this new tool. 106. A particular view of particle physics in the fifties.

Abstract: The neutrino, neutron, positron, and muon were discovered in the 1930s. The pion and strange particles had their turn in the late forties. During the fifties, which saw the change from dependence on natural sources to accelerators in the study of particles, the particles and their properties were sorted out, the strange particles were systematized, the first particle resonances were seen, and parity was found to be violated, with a concomitant clarification of the weak interaction. It was an exciting time. The field advanced rapidly. I was young and played my part in this adventure. Cosmic rays and muon decay For me, particle physics began in 1947, when I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. Enrico Fermi gave a seminar on the results of the Conversi, Pancini, and Piccioni experiment in which he explained that because the negative mesotrons rapidly find their way to the atomic K shell, the observed long lifetimes were incompatible with the role of these mesons as Yukawa particles. It was a beautiful and important experiment, and Fermi's explanation was extraordinarily lucid, as well as stimulating and exciting. The puzzle was at least in part cleared up a few months later when the Bristol group discovered the pion in nuclear emulsions. It was a great privilege to be a student in that department at that time. There were excellent teachers: Fermi, Edward Teller, Willie Zachariasen, and Maria Mayer, to name a few. 107. The hydrogen bubble chamber and the strange resonances.

Abstract: I have been out of high-energy physics for some twenty years, and to get myself back into the mood of a particle physicist, I would like to quote some recent remarks by Carlo Rubbia: Detectors are really the way to express yourself. To say somehow what you have in your guts. In the case of painters, it's painting. In the case of sculptors, it's sculpture. In the case of experimental physicists, it's detectors. The detector is the image of the guy who designed it. I've never heard it expressed so well, but I'd like to add that particle physics has always been done by a triad of equally important professionals: accelerator builders, experimental physicists, and theoretical physicists. I'll have some comments at the end on how I hope the members of the triad will interact in the future. I have been a member of the first two categories, but never of the third. My ten years in the bubble-chamber trenches (also discussed by Peter Galison in Chapter 14), the most exciting period in my life, started at the 1953 Washington meeting of the American Physical Society (APS), when I met Donald Glaser. He showed me his first cosmic-ray tracks in a tiny bubble chamber (1 × 2 cm) filled with ether. I had been unsuccessfully racking my brain to find an appropriate detector for the Bevatron, which was about to be turned on. It was immediately clear to me that Glaser's chamber filled the bill exactly – if it could be made to work with liquid hydrogen, and if it would operate in large enough sizes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

108. Early work at the Bevatron: a personal account.

Abstract: The Bevatron started operating in early 1954 at what was then the Radiation Laboratory and is now known as the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Some personal background Sula (Sulamith Goldhaber) and I came to Berkeley from Columbia University in 1953. I joined the Physics Department and Emilio Segrè's group at the Radiation Laboratory. She joined Walter Barkas's group and later Edward Lofgren's group. We had been working with photographic emulsions at Columbia's cyclotron located at Nevis, with the help and encouragement of Gilberto Bernardini. Before that, I used emulsions loaded with D2O as a γ-ray spectrometer for my Ph.D. thesis under Hugh Richards at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Setting up with photographic emulsions Whereas in my earlier work I had used 100–600-μm single small emulsions on glass, this was the period in which emulsion stacks began to be used in cosmic-ray work at Bristol and elsewhere; the electron-sensitive emulsions had recently been introduced by Kodak Ltd. of England, followed by C. Waller at Ilford, in close consultation with Cecil F. Powell and Giuseppe P. S. Occhialini. Thus, I started out at Berkeley to build up an emulsion-processing plant in the Physics Department – the photographic-emulsion arm of the Segrè group. That involved new techniques for marking emulsion sheets, to allow easy track following from sheet to sheet, the modification of microscopes with special stages to hold and manipulate those large emulsion sheets after they were mounted precisely on glass, and the construction of accurate microscope stages for multiple scattering measurements. 109. On the antiproton discovery.

Abstract: My plans at Brookhaven Cosmic-ray physicists had been dreaming of observing antiprotons long before the construction of the Bevatron. In fact, some events that could be interpreted as revealing antiprotons had already been observed in cloud chambers and in photographic emulsions, but the indications were not compelling. Being a cosmic-ray physicist, I shared that “antimatter rush” when I was at Brookhaven working with the Cosmotron. At the Brookhaven cafeteria, discussing antiprotons was the order of the day. Hartland Snyder and Maurice Goldhaber bet $400 on whether or not the antiproton existed. Goldhaber lost. In contrast to this, physicists from Berkeley had hardly any interest in antiprotons. They considered the wish to discover the antiprotons unoriginal, if not naive. After all, the energy of the Bevatron was the bare minimum for the production of antiprotons, and no one could be confident about it. Moreover, the hot subjects at the time were the strange particles (copiously produced by the Bevatron), which had opened a field of physics monopolizing the attention of the theorists, with the K0, K1 and K2 quartet, and the experiments that enabled T. D. Lee and C. N. Yang to perceive the parity violation. Even as late as December 1954, there was so little interest in the antiproton that at the American Physical Society (APS) meeting in Berkeley no one presented a paper speculating on its discovery. 110. Bubbles, sparks, and the postwar laboratory.

Abstract: Instruments and history When we think about the history of physics, we usually think about theories – the magisterial sweep of relativity, quantum mechanics, current algebra, SU(3), and gauge theories seems to subsume and dwarf the details of experiments. And if experiments appear small, how much less significant are instruments? The great breaks and continuities of physics are typically defined by the epochal accomplishments of Maxwell's equations, Einstein's special relativity, nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, and quantum electrodynamics. Such a “theorocentric” view has become ingrained in our pedagogical, physical, and historical literature. Most textbooks attach only a passing section on the devices of experimentation. The subfields of physics are classified by the theories they lead to – not by all the results one can get from instruments. But it is hopelessly one-sided to let theory stand in for all of physics when we want to understand the past sympathetically, to capture the felt continuities of physicists in the day-to-day practice of their discipline. Experimentalists frequently move between theoretical areas linked only by a continuity in the experimental skills and instruments they have at hand. Here I want to examine some of the “instrumental” continuities – and discontinuities – that existed in the 1950s, for that decade saw a proliferation of instruments unparalleled in the twentieth century. Necessarily, only a few can be discussed here, as it is hardly possible to cover the multitude of detectors that arose in that decisive decade. 111. Particle physics in the early 1950s.

Abstract: What I shall discuss in this chapter is a collection of unconnected remarks about particle physics in the early 1950s. One of the earliest international conferences on particle physics took place 17–22 September 1951 at the University of Chicago. I believe it was organized by Samuel Allison and his colleagues to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of Enrico Fermi. But Fermi did not want such a celebration, so the conference was named the International Conference on Nuclear Physics and the Physics of Fundamental Particles. It was supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and there were approximately 200 participants. In the proceedings of that conference, edited by Jay Orear, Arthur Rosenfeld, and Robert A. Schluter, one finds that the first session was begun with a talk by Fermi. Table 2.1 shows the list of elementary particles as presented by Fermi in that talk. It is interesting that Fermi had no doubt about the existence of the antiproton, the antineutron, and the neutrino. The absence of the antineutrino in the table should not be taken as reflecting on Fermi's commitment to the Majorana neutrino. (I recall he regarded that as an unsettled question.) 112. Cosmic-ray work with emulsions in the 1940s and 1950s.

Abstract: The photographic method The use of photographic plates to record ionizing radiations dates back to Henri Becquerel, who in 1896 discovered radioactivity from the blackening of plates by uranium salts. In 1910–11, M. Kinoshita showed that it was possible to record individual tracks due to a particles at both verticle and tangential angles to the emulsion plane. During the 1920s and 1930s, experiments by M. Blau and H. Wambacher in Germany, G. Zhdanov in the USSR, H. J. Taylor in England, and R. Wilkins and H. Rumbaugh and A. Locher in the United States recorded particles both from cosmic rays and from accelerators, on occasion achieving sensitivity to protons by use of organic sensitizing dyes (e.g., pinakryptol yellow). The general nonreproducibility of the results, however, placed the technique under something of a cloud. Indeed, in 1935, Taylor, at Cambridge, using Ilford Rl and R2 emulsions, concluded that it was “impossible to deduce with any accuracy the energy of individual particles from range in emulsion.” Similar remarks were voiced by M. Stanley Livingston and Hans Bethe in 1937. This situation was transformed for two reasons. First, Cecil F. Powell and F. Fertel in 1943 showed that the energy resolution in the study of (d, p) reactions in boron, using the proton range in emulsion, was at least as good as that obtained with counters and absorbers (Figure 5.1); the method could be made quantitative. 113. Cosmic-ray cloud-chamber contributions to the discovery of the strange particles in the decade 1947–1957.

Abstract: Introduction This chapter is a personal account of the most significant contributions by cosmic-ray physicists to the discovery and study of the strange particles in the ten years that followed the discovery in 1947 of the V particles in conventional cloud chambers. [V particle is a generic term invented by Patrick M. S. Blackett and Carl D. Anderson, and generally adopted in the early days, to describe the strange particles whose decay resulted in characteristic V-shaped tracks (see Figures 4.4, 4.9, and 4.10).] For fuller accounts of the subject, one should see the many excellent reviews in Progress in Cosmic Ray Physics, Progress in Physics, supplements to Il Nuovo Cimento, and Reviews of Modern Physics, and in numerous papers in the proceedings of cosmic-ray and particle physics conferences. Two long historical reviews by Charles Peyrou and myself give the main references. Significant factors in the discovery of the strange particles in cloud chambers Two special factors contributed to the success achieved with cloud chambers in the discovery and investigation of strange particles and, in certain areas, made their contribution unique, namely, penetrating-shower selection and counter control. Penetrating-shower selection Historically, the V particle work grew out of the detailed study of the so-called penetrating showers (ps) by Lajos Jánossy and his associates before and during the war. To Jánossy, such a shower meant a shower of penetrating particles (i.e., muons), but we now know that it was simply a high-energy interaction consisting mainly of nucleons, pions, muons, electrons, and photons. 114. Pions to quarks: particle physics in the 1950s.

Abstract: Between 1947 and 1963, a period freely referred to here as “the fifties,” elementary particle physics was growing up and undergoing the triumphs and pains of its adolescence. Beginning with the discovery of charged pions in cosmic rays, the period ended with the proposition that the basic constituents of the hadrons are quarks. The period witnessed the vindication of quantum field theory in renormalized quantum electrodynamics (QED), only to see it rejected as a theory of the strong and weak interactions. It saw the concept of symmetry emerge as a fundamental characteristic of basic physics, followed by its downfall in the parity revolution. Researchers discovered particles that were so different from any known previously that they labeled them “strange,” and they found unexpected properties in familiar interactions. The fifties was a time of intellectual turmoil, of shifting attitudes and changing theoretical fashions. For particle physics, as for science in general, the period was a time of transition, as energy was redirected from the problems of war to the concerns of peace. Profiting from their participation in the radar and atomic bomb projects (we are speaking now mainly of the United States, but that is where the shift began), physicists planned and carried out cooperative scientific research on a scale previously unknown in peacetime and drew on the prestige that derived from their wartime successes to obtain the necessary funding. Elementary particle physics, then called, significantly, “high-energy nuclear physics,” served as a prototype for other large-scale scientific projects, such as the space programs in the United States and the Soviet Union. Abstract: Neutral kaon photoproduction on the deuteron has been investigated by including the final state effects and compared with the experimental data. Comparison shows that the models used in this calculation can reproduce the data in the Σ channel regions fairly well but still give over predictions in the Λ channel. It seems that the tensor target asymmetries are more suitable for studying the final state effects. The extractions of the elementary photoproduction amplitude are also demonstrated. 122. PHOTOPRODUCTION OF THE NEUTRAL KAON IN THE THRESHOLD REGION AT LNS.

Abstract: The K0 photoproduction process is investigated in the threshold region, Eγ = 0.8-1.1 GeV at LNS-Tohoku. K0 events are measured via π+π- decay channel. Obtained momentum spectra for the deuteron target are compared with those calculated in the spectator model using a realistic deuteron wave function. Recent isobar models and a simple phenomenological model are used as elementary amplitudes to investigate the effect of the new data on the angular behavior of the elementary cross section. The data favor a backward-peaked angular distribution of the elementary n(γ, K0)Λ process in the center-of-mass (c.m.) system, which provides additional constraints on current models of kaon photoproduction. The present study shows that the n(γ, K0)Λ reaction can provide key information on the mechanism of the photoproduction of strangeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The FINUDA spectrometer is installed at one of the interaction points of the DAΦNE e+e- collider in Frascati(I). By stopping the low energy K- from the ɸ(1020) decays, FINUDA performed a rich program of studies of K- induced interactions on a set of nuclear targets. A survey of the results will be given, with emphasis on the study of non-mesonic weak decays of Λ-hypernuclei and on the search for deeply bound kaonic nuclear clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

124. Kaon and pion maximal emission times extraction from the femtoscopy analysis of 5.02A TeV LHC collisions within the integrated hydrokinetic model.

Abstract: A simple method for the extraction of the times of maximal emission for kaons and pions using the combined fitting of their transverse momentum spectra and the longitudinal interferometry radii dependencies on the pair transverse mass m T is applied to Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy s N N = 5.02 TeV. The method is based on the analytical formulas, that were earlier successfully utilized in the studies of Pb+Pb collisions at s N N = 2.76 TeV. To test the method, the spectra, radii and particle radiation picture are calculated within the integrated hydrokinetic model (iHKM), that includes all the stages of the matter evolution in high-energy A+A collisions: the system's formation, its thermalization, viscous hydrodynamics evolution, particlization and subsequent hadronic cascade. The model describes and predicts well already published LHC data in "soft physics" kinematic region. Thus, the fitting results for maximal emission times of kaons and pions are compared to the approximate maximal emission time values, estimated based on the emission function plots, obtained in iHKM. The developed simple method was successfully applied to the data analysis in the case of lower LHC energy and can be used in further experimental studies of femtoscopy data in relativistic A+A collisions. Abstract: Abstract: Construction of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), which is nearing the final stage, has been carried out under the cooperation of two institutions, KEK and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). We began the beam commissioning of the proton injector in the fall of 2006, and succeeded in accelerating the beam up to the design energy of 181 MeV in January, 2007. Construction of the Hadron Experimental Hall will be completed in June, 2007, and the beam line equipment will be installed. Proposals for nuclear and particle physics experiments at J-PARC were considered by the Program Advisory Committee, and several experiments have been approved. Abstract: Using KAON-MAID, an operator for kaon photo- and electro-production on the nucleon, we calculate contributions of kaon–hyperon final states to the Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn (GDH) integrals on the proton. We also calculate the corresponding contributions to the forward spin polarizability γ0 of the proton. By extending the operator to the finite Q2 region we then calculate kaon contributions to the generalized GDH integrals, as well as to the longitudinal-transverse polarizability δ0. Abstract: Abstract: The bound kaon approach to the Skyrme model is applied to exploring the possibility of deeply bound states. We derive the equation of motion for the kaon in the background field of baryon number 2 Skyrmion, which is expressed by product ansatz. Each Skyrmion is rotated in the space of SU(2) collective coordinate and the rotational motion is quantized to specify the spin and the isospin of the nucleon. We consider the spin-singlet proton–proton state. The equation of motion is numerically solved. We find that the s-wave kaon can acquire large binding energy for relatively large proton–proton distances. For instance, the binding energy for is . These measurements continue systematic hyperon production studies via the reactions where a strong decrease of the cross section ratio close-to-threshold was observed. In order to verify models developed for the description of the Λ and production we have performed the measurement on the hyperon and found unexpectedly that the total cross section is by more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted by all anticipated models. After the reconstruction of the kaon and neutron four momenta, the is identified via the missing mass technique. Abstract: Abstract: The KOPIO experiment at the BNL AGS required an extracted proton beam in which a debunched, coasting beam is forced between empty longitudinal RF buckets to form microbunches. The goal of the measurement described here was to obtain a low background determination of the fraction of protons coming from the AGS slowly extracted beam at times between microbunches (interbunch extinction). The effect on interbunch extinction of variations in the RF cavity voltage, the momentum dispersion of the beam and the main guide field voltage-ripple was studied. It was found that there exists a broad range of operating parameters that could allow the AGS to produce microbunches with the interbunch extinction better than the KOPIO experiment requirement. Results obtained in this study gave interbunch extinctions better than 10−5 (1%) of KOPIO''s upper limit. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The new data show a significant enhancement of the total cross section compared to pure phase space expectations or calculations within a one boson exchange model. In addition, we present invariant mass spectra of two particle subsystems. While the system is rather constant for different invariant masses, there is an enhancement in the system towards lower masses which could at least be partially connected to the influence of the resonance. Abstract: Three flavoured neutrino oscillations are investigated in the light of the Leggett-Garg inequality. The outline of an experimental proposal is suggested whereby the findings of this investigation may be verified. The results obtained are: (a) The maximum violation of the Leggett Garg Inequality (LGI) is $2.17036$ for neutrino path length $L_{1}=140.15 $ Km and $\Delta L=1255.7 $ Km.(b) Presence of the mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ enhances the maximum violation of LGI by $4.6\%$.(c) The currently known mass hierarchy parameter $\alpha = 0.0305$ increases the the maximum violation of LGI by $3.7\%$. 133. Kaon and antikaon properties in cold nuclear medium.

Abstract: We present results of a self-consistent calculation for the kaon and antikaon spectral functions in cold nuclear matter, using as input the kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes of the vacuum. We investigate the effect of in-medium pion dressing on the antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and antikaon spectral function. We find the influence of pion dressing to be minor on the antikaon spectral function and limited on the hyperon resonances causing only a small additional broadening. An exception is the Σ(1690). At nuclear saturation density an attractive mass shift of about 20 MeV and width of about 130 MeV is obtained. The kaon shows a repulsive mass increase of 36 MeV and a small width of the quasiparticle peak at saturation density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The COMPASS spectrometer is well suited to perform precise measurements of the pion polarizabilities via the Primakoff reaction π(Z,A)→π+(Z,A)+ψ. The electric and magnetic polarizabilities characterize the response of the response of the pion quark substructure to the electromagnetic field of the ψ during the πψ scattering. The results of a simulation for the foreseen 2004 setup are presented. The measurement of the pion polarizabilities allows for a test of the chiral perturbation theory (χPT) predictions. The pp measurement is performed as a function of transverse momentum (P-T) of the B-s(0), mesons in the range of 7 to 50 GeV/c and is compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations. The B s production yield in PbPb collisions is measured in two F t intervals, 7 to 15 and 15 to 50 GeV/c, and compared to the yield in pp collisions in the same kinematic region. The nuclear modification factor (R-AA) is found to be 1.5 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.5(syst) for 7-15 GeV/c, and 0.87 +/- 0.30(stat) +/- 0.1 7(syst) for 15-50 GeV/c, respectively. Within current uncertainties, the B-s(0) results are consistent with models of strangeness enhancement, and suppression by parton energy loss, as observed for the B+ mesons. 137. High Energy K L Calibration at Belle II using Initial State Radiation

Abstract: This thesis presents a feasibility study of a method for KL calibration at the Belle II experiment, using initial state radiation (ISR) production of the KS KL final state. By reconstructing the ISR photon, and the KS and subtracting their energy-momentum 4-vectors from that of the known e+ e − initial state, the 4-vector of the KL may be determined. Due to the loss of second order ISR photons and lost photon energy from incomplete electromagnetic shower reconstruction, a correction is applied to the photon energy. The expected efficiency, after all of the appropriate selections to isolate signal events were applied, was found to be of order 1%. This corresponds to roughly 100 well-reconstructed events per f b −1 of integrated luminosity produced at Belle II, with the difference between the MC generated and reconstructed KL energy found to be of the order of 5 MeV and with the angle between the truth and determined K L vector found to be of the order 0.02 radians=1.1◦. At this production rate, the currently available early Belle II data, which have an integrated luminosity of only 472pb−1, are likely not large enough for a meaningful KL calibration, however, Belle II is expected to produce 50ab−1 of integrated luminosity. As Belle II produces more data this method will become more and more feasible.

Abstract: The correlations of identical charged kaons were measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The femtoscopic invariant radii and correlation strengths were extracted from one-dimensional kaon correlation functions and were compared with those obtained in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at √s=7 TeV and √sNN=2.76 TeV, respectively. The presented results also complement the identical-pion femtoscopic data published by the ALICE collaboration. The extracted radii increase with increasing charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. At comparable multiplicities, the radii measured in p-Pb collisions are found to be close to those observed in pp collisions. The obtained femtoscopic parameters are reproduced by the EPOS 3 hadronic interaction model and disfavor models with large initial size or strong collective expansion at low multiplicities.

The branching fractions have been measured for the τ − → π − K S 0 ν τ , K − K S 0 ν τ , π − K S 0 π 0 ν τ , K − K S 0 π 0 ν τ , π − K S 0 K S 0 ν τ and π − K S 0 K S 0 π 0 ν τ decays. 141. Partial-Wave Analysis of Kaon-Nucleon Scattering between 1480 and 2080 MeV

Abstract: Studies of baryon spectroscopy provide one avenue to learn about the nature of QCD confinement. By carrying out systematic multichannel analyses of a broad variety of data sets from manydifferent experiments and types of reactions, we can verify the predictions of quark models andmake predictions about new baryon structures.Partial-wave analysis (PWA), in the context of quantum mechanics, refers to a technique for de-scribing scattering problems by decomposing each physical observable into its constituent quantumcomponents. The extracted partial-wave amplitudes can be used in further analyses by experi-mentalists; however, the current available partial-wave amplitudes for kaon-nucleon scattering areunable to describe scattering processes involving KL0 beams, which means they are incorrect andneed to be improved.The goal of this work was to carry out the first-ever multichannel partial-wave analysis of allavailable world data for KN → KN reactions, where K represents a kaon (a meson containing ananti-strange quark) and N represents a nucleon (a proton or neutron). Specifically, we performedcoupled-channel fits of data for the reactions, K+p → K+p, K+n → K+n, K+n → K0p, K0p →K+n and KL0p → KS0p. The KL0p → KS0p reaction also requires KN → KN amplitudes, which wereobtained from a prior Kent State University PWA. The ultimate goal was to find improved energy-dependent amplitudes for a simultaneous description of these reactions, to determine whether theavailable world data are self-consistent, and to search for possible exotic “pentaquarks” in the KNsystem.There are two main approaches found in the literature to extract partial-wave amplitudes.The first is called an energy-dependent PWA. In this approach, all the data for all reactions areanalyzed simultaneously in a single model. The second approach is called a single-energy PWA,which has no inherent model bias. In the single-energy PWA, all data within a specified energy binare fitted by approximating the partial-wave amplitudes as constants. The approach used in this work was initiated by first finding single-energy solutions, which were then fitted using a unitary,multichannel parametrization of the amplitudes. The resulting energy-dependent solutions werethen used to constrain a new round of single-energy fits. This procedure was iterated until theenergy-dependent solutions gave a good description of all the data.This work was motivated by a proposal to develop a KL0 beam facility in Hall D at JeffersonLab, which aims to search for hyperon resonances. An understanding of the underlying KN → KNreactions is fundamental to that work.

Abstract: We revisit the derivation of the covariant two-body scalar-fermion equation with a Coulomb interaction, presented in a previous paper. We show that it can be given the formal aspect of a Dirac equation, but for the fact that the eigenvalue is also contained in one of the coefficients and thus it is not linearly included. The discussion of the boundary value problem is therefore different, although some properties of the Dirac equation can be recovered in an approximation bringing back to the concept of reduced mass. We discuss a mixed analytic-numerical method of solution which allows to obtain very accurate results and we calculate the lowest levels, states and QED corrections for pionic and kaonic atoms. Abstract: Abstract: The NA48/2 collaboration has analysed more than one million decays, resulting in the improved determination of branching fraction by a factor of 3 and high precision form factor measurements. Concurrently, about 45000 decays have been analyzed. Background contamination below the percent level and very good reconstruction allow the first accurate measurement of the branching fraction and decay form factor at the percent level. The achieved precision makes possible the observation of small effects such as re-scattering. Both modes decay properties bring new precise inputs to Low Energy QCD studies and can provide strong tests of ChPT predictions. The KOTO apparatus consists of a high intensity beam line, an electromagnetic calorimeter, and veto counters. The beam line and the calorimeter have already been built at J-PARC, and the veto counters are being constructed and tested for upcoming physics runs. Abstract: Results on particle production in deep-inelastic scattering in ep collision at HERA, obtained with the H1 and ZEUS detectors, are presented. The underlying parton dynamics is investigated by studying the transverse momentum distribution of charged particles and comparing the measurements with various Monte Carlo generators using different approaches to simulate the parton cascade. In this context also results on forward jet production are discussed. The underlying parton dynamics is also studied using prompt photon production in both DIS and photoproduction regimes. The production is compared to theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo predictions. In the context of hadronisation, studies are presented of the scaled momentum distribution for charged hadrons and for and Λ particles in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are compared to models and to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. In addition, differential cross sections for production in the laboratory and Breit frame are investigated and compared to Monte Carlo predictions, which are used to study the flavour decomposition and strangeness suppression factor. production is also compared to the production of charged particles and to the production rate of the DIS events. Abstract: In this thesis, we present the measurement of second and third order azimuthal anisotropy v2 and v3 of charged hadron, as well as v2 of identified pions, kaons, and protons in p+Au collisions with PHENIX at RHIC. We also measured v2 as a function of pT for identified particles and found mass-dependent v2 (pT).

Abstract: A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on $4.4 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to \pi^0 e^\pm \nu_e$ ($K^\pm_{e3}$) and $2.3 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to \pi^0 \mu^\pm \nu_{\mu}$ ($K^\pm_{\mu3}$) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the $K^\pm_{e3}$ and $K^\pm_{\mu3}$ modes is also presented., Comment: 20 pages , 9 figures, 5 tables
