Excessive and persistent aggressiveness is the most common behavioral problem that leads to psychiatric referrals among children. While half of the variance in childhood aggression is attributed to genetic factors, the biological mechanism and the interplay between genes and environment that results in aggression remains elusive. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide an overview of studies examining the genetics of childhood aggression irrespective of psychiatric diagnosis. PubMed, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE databases were searched using predefined search terms for aggression, genes and the specific age group. From the 652 initially yielded studies, eighty-seven studies were systematically extracted for full-text review and for further quality assessment analyses. Findings show that (i) investigation of candidate genes, especially of MAOA (17 studies), DRD4 (13 studies), and COMT (12 studies) continue to dominate the field, although studies using other research designs and methods including genome-wide association and epigenetic studies are increasing, (ii) the published articles tend to be moderate in sizes, with variable methods of assessing aggressive behavior and inconsistent categorizations of tandem repeat variants, resulting in inconclusive findings of genetic main effects, gene-gene, and gene-environment interactions, (iii) the majority of studies are conducted on European, male-only or male-female mixed, participants. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically review the effects of genes on youth aggression. To understand the genetic underpinnings of childhood aggression, more research is required with larger, more diverse sample sets, consistent and reliable assessments and standardized definition of the aggression phenotypes. The search for the biological mechanisms underlying child aggression will also benefit from more varied research methods, including epigenetic studies, transcriptomic studies, gene system and genome-wide studies, longitudinal studies that track changes in risk/ameliorating factors and aggression-related outcomes, and studies examining causal mechanisms., (© 2024. The need for precise determination of heavy metals, anions, biomolecules, pesticides, drugs, and other substances is vital across clinical, environmental, and food safety domains. Recent years have seen significant progress in portable colorimetric chemical sensing devices, revolutionizing on-the-spot analysis. This review offers a comprehensive overview of these advancements, covering handheld colorimetry, RGB-based colorimetry, paper-based colorimetry, and wearable colorimetry devices. It explores the underlying principles, functional materials (chromophoric reagents/dyes and nanoparticles), detection mechanisms, and their applications in environmental monitoring, clinical care, and food safety. Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) have arisen as promising substitutes in the realm of sensing materials. They display notable advantages, including heightened sensitivity, the ability to fine-tune their plasmonic characteristics for improved selectivity, and the capacity to induce visible color changes, and simplifying detection. Integration of NPs fabricated paper device with smartphones and wearables facilitates reagent-free, cost-effective, and portable colorimetric sensing, enabling real-time analysis and remote monitoring.

Since ancient times, Azadirachta indica , or Neem, has been a well-known species of plant that produces a broad range of bioactive terpenoid chemicals that are involved in a variety of biological functions. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the biosynthesis and control of terpenoid synthesis is majorly dependent on successfully identifying the genes that are involved in their production. This review provides an overview of the recent developments concerning the identification of genes in A. indica that are responsible for the production of terpenoids. Numerous candidate genes encoding enzymes that are involved in the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway have been found through the use of transcriptomic and genomic techniques. These candidate genes include those that are responsible for the precursor synthesis, cyclization, and modification of terpenoid molecules. In addition, cutting-edge omics technologies, such as metabolomics and proteomics, have helped to shed light on the intricate regulatory networks that govern terpenoid biosynthesis. These networks are responsible for the production of terpenoids. Early adolescence is a crucial time for understanding and detecting the risk factors that may influence youth externalizing/disruptive behaviors and disorders. Previous literature reported evidence that risk factors for disruptive behaviors include catechol-O-methyltransferase ( COMT) Val158Met (rs4680) polymorphism and environmental influences. An unanswered question is whether there is a change in these risk factors over stages of youth development. This longitudinal study examines the interaction effect of Val158Met and stressful life events (SLE) on youth externalizing behaviors from ages 9-11. Participants were 2363 children of European ancestry recruited as part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Repeated measures linear mixed models were used to examine the effect of the interaction between Val158Met and SLE (G × E) on disruptive behaviors over development. Externalizing behaviors were analyzed at both baseline and two-year follow-up. Both Val158Met genotype and SLE scores demonstrated significant main effects on disruptive behaviors in youth, and those effects were consistent at both time points. G × E was not associated with externalizing behaviors. Youth who carried the Val allele and/or were exposed to higher SLE consistently had increased externalizing behavior scores. To our knowledge, this is the first study to longitudinally examine the interaction effects of Val158Met and SLE on externalizing behaviors in youth. The results highlight the importance of understanding the genetic and environmental factors underlying externalizing behaviors for better detection of at-risk youth, helping further with early prevention efforts. Here, we report an inkjet-printed graphene paper electrode (IP-GPE) for the electrochemical analysis of mercuric ions (Hg(ii)) in industrial wastewater samples. Graphene (Gr) fabricated on a paper substrate was prepared by a facile solution-phase exfoliation method in which ethyl cellulose (EC) behaves as a stabilizing agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to determine the shape and multiple layers of Gr. The crystalline structure and ordered lattice carbon of Gr were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The nano-ink of Gr-EC was fabricated on the paper substance via an inkjet printer (HP-1112) and IP-GPE was exploited as a working electrode in linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the electrochemical detection of Hg(ii). The electrochemical detection is found to be diffusion-controlled illustrated by obtaining a correlation coefficient of 0.95 in CV. The present method exhibits a better linear range of 2-100 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.862 μM for the determination of Hg(ii). Psychopathic traits can lead to violence, making it a serious public health concern. Genetic factors contribute to the aetiology of psychopathy. We examined whether monoamine oxidase A (MAOA-uVNTR) was associated with psychopathic traits measured quantitatively from controls through clinically aggressive youth (n = 336). Subjects were sub-categorized into at or above, and below age 13 years. Results reveal that males below age 13 were more likely to display psychopathic traits with the MAOA long variant, whereas males above age 13 years were more likely to display with the short variant. This suggests that developmental factors may be crucial for understanding the role of the MAOA polymorphism in psychopathic traits in males., (© 2022. Background Rosuvastatin effectively reduces endogenous cholesterol synthesis and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients and treatment patterns of rosuvastatin as a lipid-lowering therapy for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in Indian settings. Methods This real-world, retrospective multi-centric observational study included patients aged >18 years who received treatment with a rosuvastatin/rosuvastatin-based combination. Demographic and data about concomitant diseases and medications were recorded. Results Out of 1,816 patients, the majority were men (66.2%); the mean age was 54.1 years. The patients prescribed rosuvastatin for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events were 71.9% and 28.1%, respectively. Rosuvastatin 10 mg (56.8%) was the most commonly prescribed dose. For primary prevention, 10 mg (65.0%) was the most preferred dose, and for secondary prevention, 20 mg (54.3%) was the most preferred dose. Rosuvastatin treatment significantly (pre- vs. post-treatment) reduced the levels of total cholesterol (227.2 vs. 178.4 mg/dL), triglycerides (212.6 vs. 154.4 mg/dL), and LDL cholesterol (167.0 vs. 125.6 mg/dL), and increased HDL cholesterol levels (40.7 vs. 44.3 mg/dL) (p<0.0001). A total of 1,196 patients received combination therapy with rosuvastatin (aspirin, 34.0%, and fenofibrate, 21.9%). Adverse events were reported in 0.4% of the study population (leg pain, nausea, muscle cramps/pain, bleeding, and myalgia). Conclusion This study demonstrated the clinical effectiveness and safety of moderate- to high-intensity rosuvastatin (5-40 mg) for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in the Indian population. Psychopathic traits in youth may lead to adult criminal behaviors/psychopathy. The Val158Met polymorphism of catechol-O-methyltransferase ( COMT ) may influence the risk for psychopathy-related behaviors, while acting as a biomarker for predicting treatment response to dopaminergic medications. The literature shows inconsistent findings, making the interpretation of COMT 's role difficult. The aims of this article are (i) to conduct a systematic review to analyze the effects of COMT Val158Met on psychopathic traits in children and adolescents, and (ii) to present new evidence on the developmental trajectory of the association of Val158Met and youth psychopathic traits. For the systematic review, a literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, OVID Medline and PsychINFO with the search terms for psychopathic traits, Val158Met and age of interest. In our genotype study, the COMT Val158Met genotype of 293 youth with European ancestry was analyzed in association with the psychopathy-related behavior scores from the Child Behavior Checklist and the Psychopathy Screening Device. To examine the potential influence of developmental changes, the sample was split into at or above and below age 13, and analyses were performed in males and females separately. The literature search yielded twenty-eight articles to be included in the systematic review, which demonstrated mixed results on the association depending on environmental factors, sex ratios, age groups and behavioral disorder diagnoses. The results from our genotype study revealed that Met homozygous youth in the below age 13 group and conversely Val carrier youth in the above age 13 group were more likely to display psychopathic traits. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically review the effects of COMT Val158Met on psychopathic traits in childhood and adolescence, and to provide new evidence on the changing effects of Val158Met on psychopathy-related behaviors with development. Elucidating the role of the COMT genotype in conjunction with the child versus adolescent stage of development for psychopathic traits may help predict treatment response, and may lead to early intervention and prevention strategies.

We report an inkjet-printed paper based colorimetric sensor with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using smartphone and color detector App for on-site determination of mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) from environmental water samples. The AgNPs printed on Whatman filter paper (No. 1) is employed for detection of Hg 2+ which is reliant on the color change of NPs from yellow to discoloration depending on the concentration of target analyte in sample solution. The quantitative determination was performed by calculating the signal intensity of AgNPs on printed paper substrate after the introduction of Hg 2+ using smartphone and RGB color detector. The mechanism for detection of Hg 2+ on paper substrate is verified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and basic chemical assays. The linear range acquired for paper based colorimetric detection in the range of 40-1200 µgL -1 with limit of detection of 10 µgL -1 . The results obtained using an inkjet-printed paper-based chemical sensor combined with a smartphone is validated with data of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) measurement. A simple, selective and sensitive method is proposed for determination of cysteine (Cys) in milk samples using ionic liquid functionalized silver nanoparticles (ILs-AgNPs) as a colorimetric probe. ILs-AgNPs was synthesized by simple reduction method using silver nitrate as a precursor and sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and functionalized with ILs to prevent particles from self-aggregation. The sensing mechanism has been dependent on the color change of ILs-AgNPs and red shift of absorption band from 395 nm to 560 nm in the visible region, which is found proportional to the concentration of target analyte in sample. ILs-AgNPs was characterized in absence and presence of Cys by UV-vis, Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The linear range was acquired in the range of 0-100 ng mL -1 , with correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.996 and limit of detection (LOD) of 4.0 nM. The binding mechanism and interactions between Cys and ILs-AgNPs was confirmed by calculating the binding constant and thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy (∆H), entropy (∆S) and Gibb's free energy (∆G). The use of ILs-AgNPs exhibited high colorimetric selectivity for Cys in milk samples in presence of other amino acids. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is regularly accompanied by cardiac fibrosis and concomitant heart failure. Due to the heterogeneous nature and complexity of fibrosis, the knowledge about the underlying mechanisms is limited, which prevents effective pharmacotherapy. A deeper understanding of cardiac fibroblasts is essential to meet this need. We previously described phenotypic and functional differences between atrial fibroblasts from patients in sinus rhythm and with AF. Herein, we established and characterized a novel human atrial fibroblast line, which displays typical fibroblast morphology and function comparable to primary cells but with improved proliferation capacity and low spontaneous myofibroblast differentiation. These traits make our model suitable for the study of fibrosis mechanisms and for drug screening aimed at developing effective antifibrotic pharmacotherapy., (© 2020 The Authors. We report a smartphone-paper-based sensor impregnated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs/CTAB) for determination of Fe 3+ in water and blood plasma samples. The methodology for determination of Fe 3+ is based on the change in signal intensity of AgNPs/CTAB fabricated on a paper substrate after the deposition of analyte, using a smartphone followed by processing with ImageJ software. The mechanism of sensing for detection and determination of Fe 3+ is based on the discoloration of AgNPs which impregnated the paper substrate. The discoloration is attributed to the electron transfer reaction taking place on the surface of NPs in the presence of CTAB. Fe 3+ was determined when the paper was impregnated with 1 mM AgNPs for 5 min of reaction time and the substrate was kept under acidic conditions. The linear range for determination of total iron in terms of Fe 3+ was 50-900 μg L -1 with a limit of determination (LOD) of 20 μg L -1 and coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.2%. The good relative recovery of 91.3-95.0% and interference studies showed the selectivity of the method for determination of total iron in water and blood plasma samples. Smartphone-paper-based sensors have advantages of simplicity, rapidity, user-friendliness, low cost, and miniaturization of the method for on-site determination of total iron compared to methods that require sophisticated analytical instruments. An optical colorimetric and smartphone-integrated paper device (SIPD) is demonstrated for determination of As (III) in water and soil samples using sucrose modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/Suc) as a nanoprobe. The mechanism for determination of As(III) is experimentally validated by performing UV-Vis, transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transforms infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The density function theory (DFT) calculations using B3LYP with 6-311G (2d,2p) and LANL2DZ basis sets is used to theoretically prove the mechanism for determination of As(III). In addition, the paper fabricated with AuNPs/SuC was used as a nanoprobe for quantitative determination of As(III) using smartphone and ImageJ software. Calibration plot was linear over 10-800 μgL -1 for colorimetric determination of As(III) with limit of detection (LOD) of 4 μgL -1 acquired when the absorbance ratio obtained at 594 nm/515 nm. The linearity range of 50-3000 μgL -1 with LOD of 20 μgL -1 was determined using smartphone-integrated paper device. AuNPs/Suc is successfully employed for determination of As (III) from contaminated water and soil samples in colorimetry and SIPD. We report a novel and simple approach for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles capped with inositol (Ag NPs/Ino) by the reduction of silver salt with ascorbic acid under basic conditions. UV-vis, TEM, FTIR and TGA techniques were used to characterize the Ag NPs/Ino to determine the size, shape and surface modification of the NPs. Stable silver nano-ink was prepared in aqueous solution containing 1% PVP (stabilizer) and glycerol (cosolvent) and was used for the direct-writing of a paper electrode with a roller ball-point pen for electrochemical applications. The solvent, stabilizing agents, concentration of NPs (10%), paper substrate, sintering temperature (40 °C) and sintering time (15 min) were optimized to obtain a uniform coating of Ag NPs on the paper substrate. Further, the synthesis and fabrication of ZnO NPs on a paper substrate was put forward to design a touch pad device based on the piezoelectric effect. The preparation of paper based devices suggests a direction for the development of a simple, low cost and compatible approach for the direct-writing of paper based flexible electrodes and electronics for future applications., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Possible dissimilarities between smokers and nonsmokers regarding oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss were studied in a sample of 134 army conscripts. Compared to nonsmokers, smokers had a higher plaque index and greater severity of gingivitis, while no differences were found concerning pocket depth and bone loss. It could be demonstrated that the difference regarding gingivitis disappeared when a check was made for plaque values. It still remains to be explained why plaque deposition is more pronounced in smokers.
