This paper proposes a prototypic assessment tool for intercultural communicative competence. Because traditional discourse completion tasks (DCTs) focus on illocutionary competence rather than sociolinguistic competence, a modified version of a DCT was created to target sociolinguistic competence. The modified DCT employs speech acts as prompts and asks respondents to write about a situation in which a given speech act would be appropriate. This new tool is named a reverse discourse completion task (R-DCT). The task was given to learners of Turkish as a second language. Data from 12 participants were analyzed for their provision of sociopragmatic factors such as power, distance and imposition and also with respect to whether the situation was relevant to a given speech act. Responses from the participants show that R-DCTs can be used to assess intercultural competence as they help reveal respondents' knowledge of sociolinguistic context in which a given speech act may be appropriate. By removing the need for comparison with native speaker data and the limitations that emerge from the lack of linguistic formula at respondents' disposal, R-DCT is a promising elicitation task to assess sociolinguistic competence, an integral part of Byram's (1997) model of intercultural communicative competence.

Kur’ân âyetleri indirildiği andan itibaren hıfzedilmiş; deri, tahta, taş ve kemik gibi farklı yazı malzemeleri üzerine kaydedilmiştir. Gerek lafzı gerekse manası bu şekilde korunagelmiştir. Kıraati, tilaveti, cem‘i ve istinsahına azamî hassasiyet gösterilen Kur’ân’ın, yazma veya matbu halinde yüzlerce hatta binlerce tefsiri bulunmaktadır. Söz konusu yazma tefsir eserlerinden biri de Osmanlı dönemi müfessirlerinden Alâüddîn Alî b. Muhammed b. Mes‘ûd el-Bistâmî eş-Şâhrûdî’ye(Musannifek) (öl. 875/1470) aittir. Bu araştırmada farklı iki nüshasına ulaşabildiğimiz Musannifek tefsirinin metot ve muhtevası ile Kur’ân ilimleri ve tefsir usûlü konusundaki ilkeleri tahlil edilmektedir. Bu tahlil ve değerlendirmelerde sûrelerin mushaf sıralamasına göre tefsir edildiği gözlemlenmektedir. Döneminin tefsir ve tefsir usûlü anlayışını da yansıtan eserde Farsça ağırlıklı olmakla birlikte yer yer detaylı Arapça izahlara yer verilmektedir. Konya Yazma Eser Kütüphanesi’ndeki nüshada Sâd sûresi’nden Nâs’a kadarki sûreler tefsir edilmekte; Beyazıt Kütüphanesi’ndeki nüshada ise Bakara sûresi’nden bazı âyetler tefsir edilerek tefsir usûlü ve Kur’ân ilimleri ile ilgili kâidelere değinilmektedir. Bu çalışmamızla Musannifek tefsirinin şekil, içerik ve diğer hususlar bakımından ele alınarak tefsir ve tefsir usûlü perspektifinden incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Kaydına ulaşabildiğimiz bu nüshalar bağlamındaki tespitlerimiz Musannifek ve tefsirinin tanınmasına da önemli katkı sağlamaktadır.

Bu araştırmada edebî bir metinden yola çıkılarak okur tepkilerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada durum çalışması desenlerinden bütüncül tek durum deseni yaklaşımı benimsenmiştir. Araştırmanın katılımcıları amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiş, çalışma grubu 10-11 yaş aralığında toplam 65 öğrenciden oluşturulmuştur. Çalışmada ilk olarak Samed Behrengi’nin “Küçük Kara Balık” adlı kitabı eşliğinde etkileşimli okuma çalışmaları yürütülmüş sonrasında da öğrencilerin bu eser hakkındaki görüşlerine başvurulmuştur. Uygulama sürecinde araştırmacı tarafından tutulan alan notları, öğrenciler tarafından yazılan kompozisyonlar ve okuma çalışmaları tamamlandıktan sonra öğrencilerden elde edilen yazılı görüşler veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmış, verilerin analiz edilmesinde betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Kitaba ilişkin okur tepkileri üç farklı şekilde analiz edilmiş; birincisinde Schwartz (1992) tarafından oluşturulan değer sınıflamasına göre hazır tema ve kodlar üzerinden, ikincisinde araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan kod ve temalar üzerinden, üçüncüsünde Wollman-Bonilla ve Werchadlo (1995) tarafından geliştirilen kategoriler üzerinden değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Kitaba verilen okur tepkileri analiz edildiğinde “öz yönelim, uyarılım ve iyilikseverlik” temalarına ait olan alt değerlerin sıklık oranının yüksek olduğu, öğrencilerin kitabı içselleştirdikleri ve kendi hayatları ile bağdaştırarak estetik tepkiler verdikleri, “aileye değer verme” özellikle de “anneye bağlılık” değerinin ön plana çıktığı tespit edilmiştir. Metnin ötesinde okurun varlığını ve tepkisini görebilmek adına bundan sonraki çalışmalarda farklı yaş grupları ile çalışılarak ahlaki ve bilişsel gelişim dönemlerinin okur tepkileri üzerindeki etkilerinin ortaya çıkarılması önerilmektedir.

Determinants related to suicide attempts for adolescents have been the subject of several studies. Here, we aimed to reveal the factors that constitute the idea of suicide by examining the depression-anxiety status and self-concept of adolescents, as well as their socio-demographic characteristics. A total of 100 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 who were admitted to İzmir Tepecik Teaching and Research Hospital between January 2013 and December 2015 due to a suicide attempt were included in the study. In addition to the questionnaire containing socio-demographic information and familial characteristics, the Beck depression scale, the state and trait anxiety inventory, and the Piers-Harris self-concept scale were filled out by the adolescents. Compared with the control group, adolescent suicide attempters report a greater rate of smoking and alcohol use, having a broken family, a suicide attempt history, and a family history of psychiatric disorders. In addition, higher levels of depression and anxiety and lower levels of self-concept were detected among the suicidal adolescents. The study results show that suicidal adolescents who have high levels of depression and anxiety, as well as low self-concept, may lead the adolescent to suicide attempts by reducing their capacity to cope with problems [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: To compare the bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) with indirect measurement methods in the evaluation of obese children. To determine the diagnostic value of BIA in the fatty liver and metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese children. Population and methods: One hundred thirty-four obese children whom ≥10 years of age were prospectively assessment. All patients were evaluated by foot to foot BIA and indirect measurement methods. Blood biochemical parameters such as glucose, lipids and insulin levels were studied and oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Fatty liver was assessed by ultrasonography. Compared BIA records and indirect measurements findings according to fatty liver and MS. Results: The study included females/males: 77/57, mean age of 13.3 ± 2.2 years. Fatty liver was detected in 94 patients, MS was diagnosed in 58 cases. There were no gender difference in terms of fatty liver and MS. Fatty liver was seen more frequently in patients with metabolic syndrome than in those without metabolic syndrome (p < 0.001). Fat Mass (FM) of ≥ 97th percentile was observed in 63% of the 94 patients with fatty liver versus 37.5% of 40 patients without fatty liver. A FM of ≥97th percentile was observed in 72% (n=42) of the 58 patients with metabolic syndrome, 42% (n=33) of 76 patients without MS. Body mass index, upper mid-arm circumference, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference values were significantly increased in patients with fatty liver. There was a better correlation was determined between FM and FM Index with fatty liver compared to indirect measurement methods. BIA records were found moderately correlated with indirect measurements. Conclusion: Our results revealed that FM and FMI have a better correlated in obese children with fatty liver and metabolic syndrome than indirect measurement methods. The measurement of body FM by BIA can be used together with the indirect measurement methods to detect the fatty liver. FMI may be an alternative diagnostic criterion instead of WC for diagnosis of MS in children.

Emotional load assessment of the written words has gained considerable interest in psycholinguistics, semantics, and analysis of psychophysiological and electrophysiological correlates of emotional processing. Considering the lack of a publicly available database with affective ratings of contemporary verbal stimuli obtained from native Turkish speakers, we present the affective norms for two datasets of Turkish words carefully adapted from the Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW) database. The valence and arousal ratings are obtained from 61 college-aged participants for 127 highly arousing, emotionally-loaded words in the Adapted Turkish Affective List (ATAL). The ATAL ratings show a tendency of classifying fewer words as positive compared to the original list of stimuli, significantly higher arousal levels for positively rated Turkish stimuli compared to the negative and neutral words, and more congruence in arousal levels of positively exciting words. For the medium to high arousing 508 words in the Expanded Turkish Affective List (ETAL) that cover the whole 9-point spectrum of the valence dimension, 136 Turkish respondents from a wider age, education, and occupation background show higher excitability towards highly unpleasant words. Strong cross-linguistic correlations of + 0.968 between the valence ratings of ANEW and ATAL and + 0.878 for ANEW and ETAL demonstrate the ease of transferring and perceiving the valence levels across English and Turkish. The medium correlation of roughly + 0.450 between the English and Turkish arousal ratings account for lower excitation levels perceived by the native Turkish speakers and indicate the arousal dimension is similar to familiarity and originality in exhibiting more variations between different cultures. These findings demonstrate that this expanded database of partial affective normative ratings can be used as the ground truth for emotional and neurocognitive assessments, and that the presented methodology can be utilized for developing a comprehensive Turkish affective lexicon. The utilized word selection criteria also enable a cross-cultural analysis of adapted words in Turkish and other languages.
