108. Strategies and practices for suppressing abnormal grain growth during liquid phase sintering.

Abstract

Abnormal grain growth (AGG), where a small number of grains grow to sizes much larger than the neighboring matrix grains, is a frequent occurrence in liquid phase sintering of ceramics and cermets. As AGG can be detrimental to the material properties, a considerable amount of research on the nature, causes and suppression of AGG has been carried out. In this review, we outline the mixed control theory of grain growth and the principle of microstructural evolution that have been developed by Kang and coworkers over the last two decades. The theory and the principle, which are based on theories of crystal growth from a liquid, state that grain growth behavior is controlled by the nature of the solid‐liquid interfaces, either atomically rough (macroscopically rounded) or smooth (macroscopically faceted). For grains with atomically rough solid‐liquid interfaces, growth is controlled by diffusion of solute through the liquid phase and normal grain growth always occurs. For grains with faceted solid‐liquid interfaces (or a mixture of rough and faceted interfaces), growth is interface reaction‐controlled and diffusion‐controlled below and above a critical driving force for growth, respectively. Depending on the relative values of the critical driving force for growth Δgc and the maximum driving force for the largest grain in the system Δgmax, pseudo‐normal, abnormal, and stagnant grain growth can take place. Based on this theory and principle, we present strategies for suppressing AGG by adjusting Δgc and Δgmax to avoid AGG and examples of the successful use of these strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study demonstrates the modulation of off-resonance magnetoelectric ( ME) response of the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ( PZT)/ Metglas (Fe BSi) bilayered composite by laser annealing. A continuous-wave 532 nm Nd: YAG laser with varying fluences (210-390 J/mm2) was utilized to anneal the 2 μm thick PZT film deposited using granule spray in vacuum ( GSV) technique on magnetostrictive amorphous Metglas foil. It was found that the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the PZT film are strongly affected by the exposure to laser fluence. The ME voltage coefficient of PZT/Metglas increased with the fluence up to 345 J/mm2, reaching a high value of 880 mV/cm·Oe. The electrical and ME properties were correlated with the changes observed in crystallinity and grain size of the PZT film as well as with the alterations in microstructure and magnetic behavior of Metglas. Our results demonstrate that enhanced ME coupling can be realized in PZT/Metglas film composites by controlling the laser fluence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

(94-x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-6BaTiO3-x(K1/2Na1/2)NbO3 (NBT-6BT-xKNN) piezoelectric ceramics have notable potential for replacing lead containing piezoelectric ceramics in actuator applications due to their exceptionally large strain. However, a high electric field for producing a large strain and a large hysteresis are critical issues that should be resolved for practical actuator applications. In an attempt to address these issues and optimize the piezoelectric performance, we fabricated NBT-6BTxKNN (x = 0 - 5) piezoelectric single crystals with a size of 8 x 8x 10 mm by the solid-state single crystal growth method and systematically measured their electrical properties. With increased addition of KNN to replace NBT, the ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity of the fabricated [001] NBT-6BT-xKNNsingle crystals decreased, but their unipolar strain and hysteresis were considerably improved. For NBT-6BT-5KNN single crystals, the largest maximum strain (Smax) was 0.57% at 6 kV/mm, showing a converse piezoelectric constant (Smax/Emax) of 950 pm/V, and their hysteresis in the unipolar S-E curve was 12% at 6kV/mm, which would be appropriate for some actuator applications.
