101. Negative Sampling in Recommendation: A Survey and Future Directions

Abstract: Recommender systems aim to capture users' personalized preferences from the cast amount of user behaviors, making them pivotal in the era of information explosion. However, the presence of the dynamic preference, the "information cocoons", and the inherent feedback loops in recommendation make users interact with a limited number of items. Conventional recommendation algorithms typically focus on the positive historical behaviors, while neglecting the essential role of negative feedback in user interest understanding. As a promising but easy-to-ignored area, negative sampling is proficients in revealing the genuine negative aspect inherent in user behaviors, emerging as an inescapable procedure in recommendation. In this survey, we first discuss the role of negative sampling in recommendation and thoroughly analyze challenges that consistently impede its progress. Then, we conduct an extensive literature review on the existing negative sampling strategies in recommendation and classify them into five categories with their discrepant techniques. Finally, we detail the insights of the tailored negative sampling strategies in diverse recommendation scenarios and outline an overview of the prospective research directions toward which the community may engage and benefit., Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures; Under review

102. Ontology-Free General-Domain Knowledge Graph-to-Text Generation Dataset Synthesis using Large Language Model

Abstract: Knowledge Graph-to-Text (G2T) generation involves verbalizing structured knowledge graphs into natural language text. Recent advancements in Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) have improved G2T performance, but their effectiveness depends on datasets with precise graph-text alignment. However, the scarcity of high-quality, general-domain G2T generation datasets restricts progress in the general-domain G2T generation research. To address this issue, we introduce Wikipedia Ontology-Free Graph-text dataset (WikiOFGraph), a new large-scale G2T dataset generated using a novel method that leverages Large Language Model (LLM) and Data-QuestEval. Our new dataset, which contains 5.85M general-domain graph-text pairs, offers high graph-text consistency without relying on external ontologies. Experimental results demonstrate that PLM fine-tuned on WikiOFGraph outperforms those trained on other datasets across various evaluation metrics. 103. EVENet: Evidence-based Ensemble Learning for Uncertainty-aware Brain Parcellation Using Diffusion MRI

Abstract: In this study, we developed an Evidence-based Ensemble Neural Network, namely EVENet, for anatomical brain parcellation using diffusion MRI. The key innovation of EVENet is the design of an evidential deep learning framework to quantify predictive uncertainty at each voxel during a single inference. Using EVENet, we obtained accurate parcellation and uncertainty estimates across different datasets from healthy and clinical populations and with different imaging acquisitions. The overall network includes five parallel subnetworks, where each is dedicated to learning the FreeSurfer parcellation for a certain diffusion MRI parameter. An evidence-based ensemble methodology is then proposed to fuse the individual outputs. We perform experimental evaluations on large-scale datasets from multiple imaging sources, including high-quality diffusion MRI data from healthy adults and clinically diffusion MRI data from participants with various brain diseases (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Parkinson's disease, cerebral small vessel disease, and neurosurgical patients with brain tumors). Compared to several state-of-the-art methods, our experimental results demonstrate highly improved parcellation accuracy across the multiple testing datasets despite the differences in dMRI acquisition protocols and health conditions. Furthermore, thanks to the uncertainty estimation, our EVENet approach demonstrates a good ability to detect abnormal brain regions in patients with lesions, enhancing the interpretability and reliability of the segmentation results., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

104. Image Vectorization with Depth: convexified shape layers with depth ordering

Abstract: Image vectorization is a process to convert a raster image into a scalable vector graphic format. Objective is to effectively remove the pixelization effect while representing boundaries of image by scaleable parameterized curves. We propose new image vectorization with depth which considers depth ordering among shapes and use curvature-based inpainting for convexifying shapes in vectorization process.From a given color quantized raster image, we first define each connected component of the same color as a shape layer, and construct depth ordering among them using a newly proposed depth ordering energy. Global depth ordering among all shapes is described by a directed graph, and we propose an energy to remove cycle within the graph. After constructing depth ordering of shapes, we convexify occluded regions by Euler's elastica curvature-based variational inpainting, and leverage on the stability of Modica-Mortola double-well potential energy to inpaint large regions. This is following human vision perception that boundaries of shapes extend smoothly, and we assume shapes are likely to be convex. Finally, we fit B\'{e}zier curves to the boundaries and save vectorization as a SVG file which allows superposition of curvature-based inpainted shapes following the depth ordering. This is a new way to vectorize images, by decomposing an image into scalable shape layers with computed depth ordering. This approach makes editing shapes and images more natural and intuitive. We also consider grouping shape layers for semantic vectorization. We present various numerical results and comparisons against recent layer-based vectorization methods to validate the proposed model.

105. Semi-Supervised 3D Object Detection with Chanel Augmentation using Transformation Equivariance

Abstract: Accurate 3D object detection is crucial for autonomous vehicles and robots to navigate and interact with the environment safely and effectively. Meanwhile, the performance of 3D detector relies on the data size and annotation which is expensive. Consequently, the demand of training with limited labeled data is growing. We explore a novel teacher-student framework employing channel augmentation for 3D semi-supervised object detection. The teacher-student SSL typically adopts a weak augmentation and strong augmentation to teacher and student, respectively. In this work, we apply multiple channel augmentations to both networks using the transformation equivariance detector (TED). The TED allows us to explore different combinations of augmentation on point clouds and efficiently aggregates multi-channel transformation equivariance features. In principle, by adopting fixed channel augmentations for the teacher network, the student can train stably on reliable pseudo-labels. Adopting strong channel augmentations can enrich the diversity of data, fostering robustness to transformations and enhancing generalization performance of the student network. We use SOTA hierarchical supervision as a baseline and adapt its dual-threshold to TED, which is called channel IoU consistency. 106. Tailoring the light-matter interaction for high-fidelity holonomic gate operations in multiple systems

Abstract: Realization of quantum computing requires the development of high-fidelity quantum gates that are resilient to decoherence, control errors, and environmental noise. While non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) offers a promising approach, it often necessitates system-specific adjustments. This work presents a versatile scheme for implementing NHQC gates across multiple qubit systems by optimizing multiple degrees of freedom using a genetic algorithm. The scheme is applied to three qubit systems: ensemble rare-earth ion (REI) qubits, single REI qubits, and superconducting transmon qubits. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the optimized gate operations are robust against frequency detuning and induce low off-resonant excitations, making the scheme effective for advancing fault-tolerant quantum computation across various platforms., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, Journal of the Optical Society of America B

107. An End-to-End Approach for Chord-Conditioned Song Generation

Abstract: The Song Generation task aims to synthesize music composed of vocals and accompaniment from given lyrics. While the existing method, Jukebox, has explored this task, its constrained control over the generations often leads to deficiency in music performance. To mitigate the issue, we introduce an important concept from music composition, namely chords, to song generation networks. Chords form the foundation of accompaniment and provide vocal melody with associated harmony. Given the inaccuracy of automatic chord extractors, we devise a robust cross-attention mechanism augmented with dynamic weight sequence to integrate extracted chord information into song generations and reduce frame-level flaws, and propose a novel model termed Chord-Conditioned Song Generator (CSG) based on it. Experimental evidence demonstrates our proposed method outperforms other approaches in terms of musical performance and control precision of generated songs.

108. Optimal In-Kind Redistribution

Abstract: This paper develops a model of in-kind redistribution where consumers participate in either a private market or a government-designed program, but not both. We characterize when a social planner, seeking to maximize weighted total surplus, can strictly improve upon the laissez-faire outcome. We show that the optimal mechanism consists of three components: a public option, nonlinear subsidies, and laissez-faire consumption. We quantify the resulting distortions and relate them to the correlation between consumer demand and welfare weights. Our findings reveal that while private market access constrains the social planner's ability to redistribute, it also strengthens the rationale for non-market allocations.

109. SongCreator: Lyrics-based Universal Song Generation

Abstract: Music is an integral part of human culture, embodying human intelligence and creativity, of which songs compose an essential part. While various aspects of song generation have been explored by previous works, such as singing voice, vocal composition and instrumental arrangement, etc., generating songs with both vocals and accompaniment given lyrics remains a significant challenge, hindering the application of music generation models in the real world. In this light, we propose SongCreator, a song-generation system designed to tackle this challenge. The model features two novel designs: a meticulously designed dual-sequence language model (DSLM) to capture the information of vocals and accompaniment for song generation, and an additional attention mask strategy for DSLM, which allows our model to understand, generate and edit songs, making it suitable for various song-related generation tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of SongCreator by achieving state-of-the-art or competitive performances on all eight tasks. Notably, it surpasses previous works by a large margin in lyrics-to-song and lyrics-to-vocals. Additionally, it is able to independently control the acoustic conditions of the vocals and accompaniment in the generated song through different prompts, exhibiting its potential applicability. 110. Thermodynamic evidence of fermionic behavior in the vicinity of one-ninth plateau in a kagome antiferromagnet

Abstract: The spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets are believed to host exotic quantum entangled states. Recently, the report of 1/9 magnetization plateau and magnetic oscillations in a kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_x$(OH)$_{1-x}$] (YCOB) have made this material a promising candidate for experimentally realizing quantum spin liquid states. Here we present measurements of the specific heat $C_p$ in YCOB in high magnetic fields (up to 41.5 Tesla) down to 0.46 Kelvin, and the 1/9 plateau feature has been confirmed. Moreover, the temperature dependence of $C_p/T$ in the vicinity of 1/9 plateau region can be fitted by a linear in $T$ term which indicates the presence of a Dirac spectrum, together with a constant term, which indicates a finite density of states (DOS) contributed by other Fermi surfaces. Surprisingly the constant term is highly anisotropic in the direction of the magnetic field. Additionally, we observe a double-peak feature near $30$~T above the 1/9 plateau which is another hallmark of fermionic excitations in the specific heat., Comment: 4 figures in the main text, 7 figures in the appendix

111. JavaVFC: Java Vulnerability Fixing Commits from Open-source Software

Abstract: We present a comprehensive dataset of Java vulnerability-fixing commits (VFCs) to advance research in Java vulnerability analysis. Our dataset, derived from thousands of open-source Java projects on GitHub, comprises two variants: JavaVFC and JavaVFC-extended. The dataset was constructed through a rigorous process involving heuristic rules and multiple rounds of manual labeling. We initially used keywords to filter candidate VFCs based on commit messages, then refined this keyword set through iterative manual labeling. The final labeling round achieved a precision score of 0.7 among three annotators. We applied the refined keyword set to 34,321 open-source Java repositories with over 50 GitHub stars, resulting in JavaVFC with 784 manually verified VFCs and JavaVFC-extended with 16,837 automatically identified VFCs. Both variants are presented in a standardized JSONL format for easy access and analysis. This dataset supports various research endeavors, including VFC identification, fine-grained vulnerability detection, and automated vulnerability repair. 112. CRADLE-VAE: Enhancing Single-Cell Gene Perturbation Modeling with Counterfactual Reasoning-based Artifact Disentanglement

Abstract: Predicting cellular responses to various perturbations is a critical focus in drug discovery and personalized therapeutics, with deep learning models playing a significant role in this endeavor. Single-cell datasets contain technical artifacts that may hinder the predictability of such models, which poses quality control issues highly regarded in this area. To address this, we propose CRADLE-VAE, a causal generative framework tailored for single-cell gene perturbation modeling, enhanced with counterfactual reasoning-based artifact disentanglement. Throughout training, CRADLE-VAE models the underlying latent distribution of technical artifacts and perturbation effects present in single-cell datasets. It employs counterfactual reasoning to effectively disentangle such artifacts by modulating the latent basal spaces and learns robust features for generating cellular response data with improved quality. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach improves not only treatment effect estimation performance but also generative quality as well. Abstract: The ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}(\to D^{+(0)}{\Lambda}){\pi}^{-}}$ decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the~$\text{LHCb}$ experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined to be $3/2^{+}$ with a significance of more than $6.5\sigma$ ($3.5\sigma$) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}{\pi}^{-}}$ transitions are measured to be $-0.92\pm0.10\pm0.05$ ($-0.92\pm0.16\pm0.22$), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 114. RexUniNLU: Recursive Method with Explicit Schema Instructor for Universal NLU

Abstract: Information Extraction (IE) and Text Classification (CLS) serve as the fundamental pillars of NLU, with both disciplines relying on analyzing input sequences to categorize outputs into pre-established schemas. However, there is no existing encoder-based model that can unify IE and CLS tasks from this perspective. To fully explore the foundation shared within NLU tasks, we have proposed a Recursive Method with Explicit Schema Instructor for Universal NLU. Specifically, we firstly redefine the true universal information extraction (UIE) with a formal formulation that covers almost all extraction schemas, including quadruples and quintuples which remain unsolved for previous UIE models. Then, we expands the formulation to all CLS and multi-modal NLU tasks. Based on that, we introduce RexUniNLU, an universal NLU solution that employs explicit schema constraints for IE and CLS, which encompasses all IE and CLS tasks and prevent incorrect connections between schema and input sequence. To avoid interference between different schemas, we reset the position ids and attention mask matrices. Extensive experiments are conducted on IE, CLS in both English and Chinese, and multi-modality, revealing the effectiveness and superiority. 115. Towards Multi-agent Policy-based Directed Hypergraph Learning for Traffic Signal Control

Abstract: Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methods that incorporate graph neural networks (GNNs) have been extensively studied for intelligent traffic signal control, which aims to coordinate traffic signals effectively across multiple intersections. Despite this progress, the standard graph learning used in these methods still struggles to capture higher-order correlations in real-world traffic flow. In this paper, we propose a multi-agent proximal policy optimization framework DHG-PPO, which incorporates PPO and directed hypergraph module to extract the spatio-temporal attributes of the road networks. DHG-PPO enables multiple agents to ingeniously interact through the dynamical construction of hypergraph. The effectiveness of DHG-PPO is validated in terms of average travel time and throughput against state-of-the-art baselines through extensive experiments.

Abstract: We investigate skein relations in cluster algebras from punctured surfaces, extending the work of \c{C}anak\c{c}i-Schiffler and Musiker-Williams on unpunctured surfaces. Using a combinatorial expansion formula by O\u{g}uz-Yildirim and Pilaud-Reading-Schroll, we provide explicit formulas for these relations. Our approach allows us to detail the $y$-monomials involved and identify that one term has a coefficient of 1. 117. An Analog and Digital Hybrid Attention Accelerator for Transformers with Charge-based In-memory Computing

Abstract: The attention mechanism is a key computing kernel of Transformers, calculating pairwise correlations across the entire input sequence. The computing complexity and frequent memory access in computing self-attention put a huge burden on the system especially when the sequence length increases. This paper presents an analog and digital hybrid processor to accelerate the attention mechanism for transformers in 65nm CMOS technology. We propose an analog computing-in-memory (CIM) core, which prunes ~75% of low-score tokens on average during runtime at ultra-low power and delay. Additionally, a digital processor performs precise computations only for ~25% unpruned tokens selected by the analog CIM core, preventing accuracy degradation. Measured results show peak energy efficiency of 14.8 and 1.65 TOPS/W, and peak area efficiency of 976.6 and 79.4 GOPS/mm$^\mathrm{2}$ in the analog core and the system-on-chip (SoC), respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 9 figures, to be published at ESSERC 2024

118. Alignment of three mirror anastigmat telescopes using a multilayered stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm

Abstract: When a telescope doesn't reach a reasonable point spread function on the detector or detectable wavefront quality after initial assembly, a coarse phase alignment on-sky is crucial. Before utilizing a closed loop adaptive optics system, the observatory needs a strategy to actively align the telescope sufficiently for fine wavefront sensing. This paper presents a method of early-stage alignment using a stochastic parallel-gradient-descent (SPGD) algorithm which performs random perturbations to the optics of a three mirror anastigmat telescope design. The SPGD algorithm will drive the telescope until the wavefront error is below the acceptable range of the fine adaptive optics system to hand the telescope over. 119. BROWDIE: a New Machine Learning Model for Searching T&Y Dwarfs Using the UKIDSS J, H, K Band Survey

Abstract: We propose a new T, Y dwarf search model using machine learning (ML), called the "BROWn Dwarf Image Explorer (BROWDIE). Brown dwarfs (BD) are estimated to make up 25 percent of all celestial objects in the Galaxy, yet only a small number have been thoroughly studied. Homogeneous and complete samples of BDs are essential to advance the studies. However, due to their faintness, conducting spectral studies of BDs can be challenging. T\&Y brown dwarfs, a redder and fainter subclass of BDs, are even harder to detect. As a result, only a few T\&Y dwarfs have been extensively studied. Numerous attempts, including ML using various color band observations, have been made to identify BDs based on their colors. However, those models often require a large number of color observations, which can be a limitation. This study implemented an ML model by utilizing data from the J, H, and K photometry of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Surveys (UKIDSS) simultaneously, effectively distinguishing celestial objects similar to BDs. The BROWDIE model was trained using UKIDSS data, and based on the model, 118 T dwarfs and 14 Y dwarfs were found in the UKIDSS DR11PLUS LAS L4 zone.

120. Direct quarkonium production in DIS from a joint CGC and NRQCD framework

Abstract: We compute the differential cross section for direct quarkonium production in high-energy electron-nucleus collisions at small $x$. Our computation is performed within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism that separates the calculation into short distance coefficients and long distance matrix elements that depend on the color and spin of the state. We obtain the short distance coefficients of the production of the heavy quark pair within the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory, which resums coherent multiple interactions of the heavy quark pair with the nucleus to all orders. Our results are expressed as the convolution of perturbatively calculable perturbative functions with multi-point light-like Wilson line correlators. In the correlation limit, we establish the correspondence between our CGC formulation with calculations employing the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. We extend this correspondence by resumming kinematic power corrections within the improved TMD framework, which interpolates between the TMD formalism and $k_\perp$ factorization formalism. We present a detailed numerical analysis, focusing on $J/\psi$ production in the kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider, highlighting the importance of genuine higher-order saturation contributions when the electron collides with a large nucleus., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Exchange bias (EB) is a fundamental phenomenon in widespread information technologies. However, a comprehensive understanding of its microscopic origin remains a great challenge. One key issue in the debate is the role of frustration and disorder in the EB mechanism, which motivates the exploration of the EB effect in spin glass (SG) systems. Here,in the SG state of Cr-doped Hund's metal CsFe2As2, we discover a giant EB effect with a maximum bias field of ~ 2 Tesla, which is almost two orders of magnitude larger than that of traditional alloy SGs. Our results indicate that the giant EB effect should originate from the exchange interactions at the natural boundaries between the tunable ferromagnetic-like (FM) regions around Cr dopants and the SG matrix, via which the FM spins are strongly pinned by the frozen spins in the SG matrix. In addition, the temperature-dependent and cooling-field-dependent EB behaviors could be interpreted well by the SG model with frustrated FM/SG boundaries, which provides an intuitive and explicit understanding of the impact of glassy parameters on the EB effect. 123. Numerical Study of Flow Past a Wall-Mounted Dolphin Dorsal Fin at Low Reynolds Numbers

Abstract: Dolphin swimming has been a captivating area of study, yet the hydrodynamics of the dorsal fin remain underexplored. In this study, we present three-dimensional simulations of flow around a wall-mounted dolphin dorsal fin, derived from a real dolphin scan. The NEK5000 (spectral element method) is employed with a second-order hex20 mesh to ensure high accuracy and computational efficiency in the simulations. A total of 13 cases were simulated, covering angles of attack (AoA) ranging from $0^\circ$ to $60^\circ$ and Reynolds numbers ($\text{Re}$) between 691 and 2000. Our results show that both drag and lift increase significantly with the AoA. Almost no vortex is observed at $\text{AoA} = 0^\circ$, whereas complex vortex structures emerge for $\text{AoA} \geq 30^\circ$, including half-horseshoe, hairpin, arch, and wake vortices. 124. Weyl Fermion with various chiralities in a f-electron ferromagnetic system: PrB4

Abstract: Rare-earth tetraborides ($R$B$_{4}$) have attracted a lot of recent attention due to their intriguing electronic, magnetic, and topological properties. We have theoretically investigated topological properties of PrB$_{4}$, which is unique among $R$B$_{4}$ family due to its ferromagnetic ground state. We have discovered that PrB$_{4}$ is an intrinsic magnetic Weyl system possessing multiple topological band crossings with various chiral charges. Density-functional-theory band calculations combined with tight-binding band analysis reveal large Fermi-arc surface states, which are characteristic fingerprints of Weyl fermions. Anomalous Hall conductivity is estimated to be very large, ranging from 500 to 1000 ($\Omega \cdot$cm)$^{-1}$ near the Fermi level, which also demonstrates the topological Weyl character of ferromagnetic PrB$_{4}$. These findings suggest that PrB$_{4}$, being a potential candidate of magnetic Weyl system, would be a promising rare-earth topological system for applications to next-generation spintronic and photonic devices., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: In the current landscape of autonomous vehicle (AV) safety and security research, there are multiple isolated problems being tackled by the community at large. Due to the lack of common evaluation criteria, several important research questions are at odds with one another. For instance, while much research has been conducted on physical attacks deceiving AV perception systems, there is often inadequate investigations on working defenses and on the downstream effects of safe vehicle control. This paper provides a thorough description of the current state of AV safety and security research. We provide individual sections for the primary research questions that concern this research area, including AV surveillance, sensor system reliability, security of the AV stack, algorithmic robustness, and safe environment interaction. We wrap up the paper with a discussion of the issues that concern the interactions of these separate problems. At the conclusion of each section, we propose future research questions that still lack conclusive answers. Abstract: The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. Abstract: Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. 128. Global prescribed-time control of a class of uncertain nonholonomic systems by smooth time-varying feedback

Abstract: This paper investigates the prescribed-time smooth control problem for a class of uncertain nonholonomic systems. With a novel smooth time-varying state transformation, the uncertain chained nonholonomic system is reformulated as an uncertain linear time-varying system. By fully utilizing the properties of a class of parametric Lyapunov equations and constructing time-varying Lyapunov-like functions, smooth time-varying high-gain state and output feedback controllers are designed. The states and controllers are proven to converge to zero at any prescribed time. The proposed smooth time-varying method combines the advantage of a time-varying high-gain function, which enhances control performance, and a smooth time-varying function that can drive the states to zero at the prescribed time. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified by a numerical example.

129. A Compact Magnet System for the Tsinghua Tabletop Kibble Balance

Abstract: Although the so-called magnetic geometrical factor, $Bl$, of a Kibble balance does not appear in the Kibble equations, it offers the precision link between electrical and mechanical quantities and furthers a quasi-quantum traceability path for mass metrology. This feature makes the magnet system, supplying the $Bl$ in Kibble equations, play a core role in Kibble balances. Following the open-hardware idea, we report here on the design, manufacture, assembly, optimization, and finally performance of a compact magnet system for the Tsinghua tabletop Kibble balance. Notably, the magnet system showcased in this study facilitates a straightforward upper levitation of splitting through a streamlined mechanism guide, substantially enhancing the ease of open and close operations. Experimental tests show the realized magnet systems can yield a high $Bl$ value (e.g., 400 Tm for a bifilar coil and 800 Tm for a single coil with a wire gauge of 0.2 mm) meanwhile a low volume/weight (40 kg) thanks to the uniformity improvement of magnetic profiles. 130. Improving Robustness to Multiple Spurious Correlations by Multi-Objective Optimization

Abstract: We study the problem of training an unbiased and accurate model given a dataset with multiple biases. This problem is challenging since the multiple biases cause multiple undesirable shortcuts during training, and even worse, mitigating one may exacerbate the other. We propose a novel training method to tackle this challenge. Our method first groups training data so that different groups induce different shortcuts, and then optimizes a linear combination of group-wise losses while adjusting their weights dynamically to alleviate conflicts between the groups in performance; this approach, rooted in the multi-objective optimization theory, encourages to achieve the minimax Pareto solution. We also present a new benchmark with multiple biases, dubbed MultiCelebA, for evaluating debiased training methods under realistic and challenging scenarios. Abstract: A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. 132. UC-NeRF: Uncertainty-aware Conditional Neural Radiance Fields from Endoscopic Sparse Views

Abstract: Visualizing surgical scenes is crucial for revealing internal anatomical structures during minimally invasive procedures. Novel View Synthesis is a vital technique that offers geometry and appearance reconstruction, enhancing understanding, planning, and decision-making in surgical scenes. Despite the impressive achievements of Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), its direct application to surgical scenes produces unsatisfying results due to two challenges: endoscopic sparse views and significant photometric inconsistencies. In this paper, we propose uncertainty-aware conditional NeRF for novel view synthesis to tackle the severe shape-radiance ambiguity from sparse surgical views. The core of UC-NeRF is to incorporate the multi-view uncertainty estimation to condition the neural radiance field for modeling the severe photometric inconsistencies adaptively. Specifically, our UC-NeRF first builds a consistency learner in the form of multi-view stereo network, to establish the geometric correspondence from sparse views and generate uncertainty estimation and feature priors. In neural rendering, we design a base-adaptive NeRF network to exploit the uncertainty estimation for explicitly handling the photometric inconsistencies. Furthermore, an uncertainty-guided geometry distillation is employed to enhance geometry learning. Experiments on the SCARED and Hamlyn datasets demonstrate our superior performance in rendering appearance and geometry, consistently outperforming the current state-of-the-art approaches. Abstract: A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided. 134. Understanding eGFR Trajectories and Kidney Function Decline via Large Multimodal Models

Abstract: The estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is an essential indicator of kidney function in clinical practice. Although traditional equations and Machine Learning (ML) models using clinical and laboratory data can estimate eGFR, accurately predicting future eGFR levels remains a significant challenge for nephrologists and ML researchers. Recent advances demonstrate that Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) can serve as robust foundation models for diverse applications. This study investigates the potential of LMMs to predict future eGFR levels with a dataset consisting of laboratory and clinical values from 50 patients. By integrating various prompting techniques and ensembles of LMMs, our findings suggest that these models, when combined with precise prompts and visual representations of eGFR trajectories, offer predictive performance comparable to existing ML models. Abstract: The discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure has motivated the investigation of a parent spin density wave (SDW) state which could provide the underlying pairing interaction. Here, we employ resonant soft x-ray scattering and polarimetry on thin films of bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ to determine that the magnetic structure of the SDW forms unidirectional diagonal spin stripes with moments lying within the NiO$_2$ plane and perpendicular to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, but without the strong charge disproportionation typically associated with other nickelates. These stripes form anisotropic domains with shorter correlation lengths perpendicular versus parallel to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, revealing nanoscale rotational and translational symmetry breaking analogous to the cuprate and Fe-based superconductors, with Bloch-like antiferromagnetic domain walls separating orthogonal domains., Comment: 30 pages including supplementary, 4 figures + 9 supplementary figures

136. Approximating mutual information of high-dimensional variables using learned representations

Abstract: Mutual information (MI) is a general measure of statistical dependence with widespread application across the sciences. However, estimating MI between multi-dimensional variables is challenging because the number of samples necessary to converge to an accurate estimate scales unfavorably with dimensionality. In practice, existing techniques can reliably estimate MI in up to tens of dimensions, but fail in higher dimensions, where sufficient sample sizes are infeasible. Here, we explore the idea that underlying low-dimensional structure in high-dimensional data can be exploited to faithfully approximate MI in high-dimensional settings with realistic sample sizes. We develop a method that we call latent MI (LMI) approximation, which applies a nonparametric MI estimator to low-dimensional representations learned by a simple, theoretically-motivated model architecture. Using several benchmarks, we show that unlike existing techniques, LMI can approximate MI well for variables with $> 10^3$ dimensions if their dependence structure has low intrinsic dimensionality. Finally, we showcase LMI on two open problems in biology. First, we approximate MI between protein language model (pLM) representations of interacting proteins, and find that pLMs encode non-trivial information about protein-protein interactions. Second, we quantify cell fate information contained in single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) measurements of hematopoietic stem cells, and find a sharp transition during neutrophil differentiation when fate information captured by scRNA-seq increases dramatically.

137. DAPONet: A Dual Attention and Partially Overparameterized Network for Real-Time Road Damage Detection

Abstract: Current road damage detection methods, relying on manual inspections or sensor-mounted vehicles, are inefficient, limited in coverage, and often inaccurate, especially for minor damages, leading to delays and safety hazards. To address these issues and enhance real-time road damage detection using street view image data (SVRDD), we propose DAPONet, a model incorporating three key modules: a dual attention mechanism combining global and local attention, a multi-scale partial over-parameterization module, and an efficient downsampling module. DAPONet achieves a mAP50 of 70.1% on the SVRDD dataset, outperforming YOLOv10n by 10.4%, while reducing parameters to 1.6M and FLOPs to 1.7G, representing reductions of 41% and 80%, respectively. On the MS COCO2017 val dataset, DAPONet achieves an mAP50-95 of 33.4%, 0.8% higher than EfficientDet-D1, with a 74% reduction in both parameters and FLOPs.

Abstract: Measurements of B-mode polarization in the CMB sourced from primordial gravitational waves would provide information on the energy scale of inflation and its potential form. To achieve these goals, one must carefully characterize the Galactic foregrounds, which can be distinguished from the CMB by conducting measurements at multiple frequencies. BICEP Array is the latest-generation multi-frequency instrument of the BICEP/Keck program, which specifically targets degree-scale primordial B-modes in the CMB. In its final configuration, this telescope will consist of four small-aperture receivers, spanning frequency bands from 30 to 270 GHz. The 220/270 GHz receiver designed to characterize Galactic dust is currently undergoing commissioning at Stanford University and is scheduled to deploy to the South Pole during the 2024--2025 austral summer. Here, we will provide an overview of this high-frequency receiver and discuss the integration status and test results as it is being commissioned.

139. Fourth-order compact finite difference schemes for solving biharmonic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions

Abstract: In this study, we propose a genuine fourth-order compact finite difference scheme for solving biharmonic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in both two and three dimensions. In the 2D case, we build upon the high-order compact (HOC) schemes for flux-type boundary conditions originally developed by Zhilin Li and Kejia Pan [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 45 (2023), pp. A646-A674] to construct a high order compact discretization for coupled boundary conditions. When considering the 3D case, we modify carefully designed undetermined coefficient methods of Li and Pan to derive the finite difference approximations of coupled boundary conditions. The resultant FD discretization maintains the global fourth order convergence and compactness. Unlike the very popular Stephenson method, the number of unknows do not increase with dimensions. Besides, it is noteworthy that the condition number of the coefficient matrix increases at a rate of $O(h^{-2})$ in both 2D and 3D. Abstract: A search for violation of the charge-parity $C\!P$ symmetry in the $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{\phi\pi^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. Abstract: We present the first measurement of the missing energy due to nuclear effects in monoenergetic, muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon, originating from $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ decay-at-rest ($E_{\nu_\mu}=235.5$ MeV), performed with the JSNS$^2$ liquid scintillator based experiment. Towards characterizing the neutrino interaction, ostensibly $\nu_\mu n \rightarrow \mu^- p$ or $\nu_\mu$$^{12}\mathrm{C}$ $\rightarrow \mu^-$$^{12}\mathrm{N}$, and in analogy to similar electron scattering based measurements, we define the missing energy as the energy transferred to the nucleus ($\omega$) minus the kinetic energy of the outgoing proton(s), $E_{m} \equiv \omega-\sum T_p$, and relate this to visible energy in the detector, $E_{m}=E_{\nu_\mu}~(235.5~\mathrm{MeV})-m_\mu~(105.7~\mathrm{MeV}) - E_{vis}$. The missing energy, which is naively expected to be zero in the absence of nuclear effects (e.g. nucleon separation energy, Fermi momenta, and final-state interactions), is uniquely sensitive to many aspects of the interaction, and has previously been inaccessible with neutrinos. The shape-only, differential cross section measurement reported, based on a $(77\pm3)$% pure double-coincidence KDAR signal (621 total events), provides an important benchmark for models and event generators at 100s-of-MeV neutrino energies, characterized by the difficult-to-model transition region between neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-nucleon scattering, and relevant for applications in nuclear physics, neutrino oscillation measurements, and Type-II supernova studies.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices with fixed zero entries. Let $X_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ in which some entries are fixed to be zero and the other entries are i.i.d. copies of a random variable $\xi \in \mathbb{Z}_p$. We consider the minimal number of random entries of $X_n$ required for the cokernel of $X_n$ to converge to the Cohen--Lenstra distribution. When $\xi$ is given by the Haar measure, we prove a lower bound of the number of random entries and prove its converse-type result using random regular bipartite multigraphs. When $\xi$ is a general random variable, we determine the minimal number of random entries. Let $M_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $k$-step stairs of zeros and the other entries given by independent random $\epsilon$-balanced variables valued in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Abstract: The evolving speech processing landscape is increasingly focused on complex scenarios like meetings or cocktail parties with multiple simultaneous speakers and far-field conditions. Existing methodologies for addressing these challenges fall into two categories: multi-channel and single-channel solutions. Single-channel approaches, notable for their generality and convenience, do not require specific information about microphone arrays. This paper presents a large-scale far-field overlapping speech dataset, crafted to advance research in speech separation, recognition, and speaker diarization. This dataset is a critical resource for decoding ``Who said What and When'' in multi-talker, reverberant environments, a daunting challenge in the field. 145. Multi-channel frequency router based on valley-Hall metacrystals

Abstract: Topological photonics has revolutionized manipulations of electromagnetic waves by leveraging various topological phases proposed originally in condensed matters, leading to robust and error-immune signal processing. Despite considerable efforts, a critical challenge remains in devising frequency routers operating at a broadband frequency range with limited crosstalk. Previous designs usually relied on fine tuning of parameters and are difficult to be integrated efficiently and compactly. Here, targeting the demand for frequency-selective applications in on-chip photonics, we explore a topological approach to photonic frequency router via valley-Hall metacrystals. Diverging from the majority of studies which focuses on zigzag interfaces, our research shifts the attention to armchair interfaces within an ABA sandwich-like structure, where a single column of type-B metacrystal acts as a perturbation in the background type-A metacrystal. Essentially, through tuning a single geometric parameter of the type-B metacrystal, this configuration gives rise to interface states within a customized frequency band, enabling signal routing with limited crosstalk to meet specified demands. Moreover, this concept is practically demonstrated through a photonic frequency router with three distinct channels, experimentally exhibiting robust wave transmissions with excellent agreement with the design. This investigation manifests possible applications of the armchair interfaces in valley-Hall photonic systems and advances development of photonic devices that are both compact and efficient. Notably, the approach is naturally compatible with on-chip photonics and integration, which could benefit telecommunications and optical computing applications.

146. When Heterophily Meets Heterogeneous Graphs: Latent Graphs Guided Unsupervised Representation Learning

Abstract: Unsupervised heterogeneous graph representation learning (UHGRL) has gained increasing attention due to its significance in handling practical graphs without labels. However, heterophily has been largely ignored, despite its ubiquitous presence in real-world heterogeneous graphs. In this paper, we define semantic heterophily and propose an innovative framework called Latent Graphs Guided Unsupervised Representation Learning (LatGRL) to handle this problem. First, we develop a similarity mining method that couples global structures and attributes, enabling the construction of fine-grained homophilic and heterophilic latent graphs to guide the representation learning. Moreover, we propose an adaptive dual-frequency semantic fusion mechanism to address the problem of node-level semantic heterophily. To cope with the massive scale of real-world data, we further design a scalable implementation. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed framework. Abstract: Pair density wave (PDW) is a distinct superconducting state characterized by a periodic modulation of its order parameter in real space. Its intricate interplay with the charge density wave (CDW) state is a continuing topic of interest in condensed matter physics. While PDW states have been discovered in cuprates and other unconventional superconductors, the understanding of diverse PDWs and their interactions with different types of CDWs remains limited. Here, utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, we unveil the subtle correlations between PDW ground states and two distinct CDW phases -- namely, anion-centered-CDW (AC-CDW) and hollow-centered-CDW (HC-CDW) -- in 2H-NbSe$_2$. In both CDW regions, we observe coexisting PDWs with a commensurate structure that aligns with the underlying CDW phase. The superconducting gap size, $\Delta(r)$, related to the pairing order parameter is in phase with the charge density in both CDW regions. Meanwhile, the coherence peak height, $H(r)$, qualitatively reflecting the electron-pair density, exhibits a phase difference of approximately $2\pi/3$ relative to the CDW. The three-fold rotational symmetry is preserved in the HC-CDW region but is spontaneously broken in the AC-CDW region due to the PDW state, leading to the emergence of nematic superconductivity., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

148. Does Knowledge Localization Hold True? Surprising Differences Between Entity and Relation Perspectives in Language Models

Abstract: Large language models encapsulate knowledge and have demonstrated superior performance on various natural language processing tasks. Recent studies have localized this knowledge to specific model parameters, such as the MLP weights in intermediate layers. This study investigates the differences between entity and relational knowledge through knowledge editing. Our findings reveal that entity and relational knowledge cannot be directly transferred or mapped to each other. This result is unexpected, as logically, modifying the entity or the relation within the same knowledge triplet should yield equivalent outcomes. To further elucidate the differences between entity and relational knowledge, we employ causal analysis to investigate how relational knowledge is stored in pre-trained models. Contrary to prior research suggesting that knowledge is stored in MLP weights, our experiments demonstrate that relational knowledge is also significantly encoded in attention modules. This insight highlights the multifaceted nature of knowledge storage in language models, underscoring the complexity of manipulating specific types of knowledge within these models., Comment: CIKM 2024

Abstract: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a serious fungal disease affecting wheat (including durum), barley, oats, other small cereal grains, and corn. Effective monitoring and accurate detection of FHB are crucial to ensuring stable and reliable food security. Traditionally, trained agronomists and surveyors perform manual identification, a method that is labor-intensive, impractical, and challenging to scale. With the advancement of deep learning and Hyper-spectral Imaging (HSI) and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies, employing deep learning, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), has emerged as a promising solution. Notably, wheat infected with serious FHB may exhibit significant differences on the spectral compared to mild FHB one, which is particularly advantageous for hyperspectral image-based methods. In this study, we propose a self-unsupervised classification method based on HSI endmember extraction strategy and top-K bands selection, designed to analyze material signatures in HSIs to derive discriminative feature representations. This approach does not require expensive device or complicate algorithm design, making it more suitable for practical uses. 150. Towards Empathetic Conversational Recommender Systems

Abstract: Conversational recommender systems (CRSs) are able to elicit user preferences through multi-turn dialogues. They typically incorporate external knowledge and pre-trained language models to capture the dialogue context. Most CRS approaches, trained on benchmark datasets, assume that the standard items and responses in these benchmarks are optimal. However, they overlook that users may express negative emotions with the standard items and may not feel emotionally engaged by the standard responses. This issue leads to a tendency to replicate the logic of recommenders in the dataset instead of aligning with user needs. To remedy this misalignment, we introduce empathy within a CRS. With empathy we refer to a system's ability to capture and express emotions. We propose an empathetic conversational recommender (ECR) framework. ECR contains two main modules: emotion-aware item recommendation and emotion-aligned response generation. Specifically, we employ user emotions to refine user preference modeling for accurate recommendations. To generate human-like emotional responses, ECR applies retrieval-augmented prompts to fine-tune a pre-trained language model aligning with emotions and mitigating hallucination. To address the challenge of insufficient supervision labels, we enlarge our empathetic data using emotion labels annotated by large language models and emotional reviews collected from external resources. We propose novel evaluation metrics to capture user satisfaction in real-world CRS scenarios. Our experiments on the ReDial dataset validate the efficacy of our framework in enhancing recommendation accuracy and improving user satisfaction.
