Abstract

A thorough analysis of the structural, elastic, electronic, and optical properties of ScCuO3 perovskite is conducted using density functional theory. The compound's structural and mechanical stabilities are established under pressure. The values of Pugh's ratio (B/G) and the Zener anisotropy factor indicate that ScCuO3 displays ductile behavior and elastic anisotropy under varying pressures. The metallic behavior of ScCuO3 is confirmed by its electronic band structure, which shows that a few valence bands intersect the Fermi level. The Cu‐3d and O‐2p orbitals overlap near the Fermi level, which is found from the density of states diagram. It is also proclaimed that the Cu‐3d states strongly hybridized with O‐2p states are observed under applied pressure. Various optical properties (dielectric function, photoconductivity, absorption coefficient, loss function, reflectivity, and refractive index) are also analyzed. The compound has the highest reflectivity and is found in the low‐energy region, making it suitable as a coating material for reducing solar heating. The absorption spectra and optical conductivity indicate the metallic nature of ScCuO3, which is supported by the calculations of the electronic band structure. Abstract

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, particularly in diabetic patients. Elevated preoperative HbA1c levels have been suggested as a potential risk factor for postoperative AF; however, the association remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative HbA1c levels and the incidence of new-onset atrial fibrillation during the early postoperative period in diabetic patients undergoing on-pump CABG surgery in Bangladesh. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 60 diabetic patients undergoing on-pump CABG were included and divided into two groups: Group-1 (HbA1c 0.05). However, preoperative HbA1c levels were significantly different between the two groups (6.11±0.44 in Group-1 vs. 7.98±0.55 in Group-2, p < 0.001). The incidence of new-onset atrial fibrillation during the early postoperative period was significantly higher in Group-2 (63.33%) than in Group-1 (30.00%, p < 0.05). A significant association was also observed between postoperative atrial fibrillation and hypertension (p < 0.05). Abstract

Introduction: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a common surgical procedure for the management of coronary artery disease. Off-pump (OPCAB) and on-pump (ONCAB) CABG have been compared in various studies, but limited data exists for the Bangladeshi population. The present study was conducted to shed further light on the topic relative to the Bangladeshi demographic. Methods: This retrospective observational study conducted at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Dhaka, Bangladesh, over a 1.5-year period from April 2019 to September 2020 compared the outcomes of OPCAB and ONCAB in a Bangladeshi population, analyzing the demographic and clinical characteristics, operative characteristics, early postoperative outcomes, and recovery parameters of 34 patients undergoing either OPCAB (n=17) or ONCAB (n=17). Result: The two groups were well-matched in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics, with no significant differences in age, gender, BMI, or comorbidities. The OPCAB group had a significantly shorter total operative time (180.4 ± 26.8 min vs. 195.3 ± 31.2 min, P < 0.05). Early postoperative outcomes were similar between the two groups (P > 0.05 for all comparisons), while the OPCAB group had a significantly shorter hospital stay (7.8 ± 1.8 days vs. 9.2 ± 2.1 days, P < 0.05), mechanical ventilation time (9.1 ± 3.8 hours vs. 12.6 ± 4.5 hours, P < 0.05), and time to ambulation (3.8 ± 0.9 days vs. 4.5 ± 1.0 days, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study suggests that OPCAB may be a viable alternative to ONCAB for selected patients in the Bangladeshi population, offering potential benefits in terms of reduced recovery times and resource utilization. Further large-scale, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings and assess the long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness of OPCAB compared to ONCAB.

Abstract

The concept of ‘sustainable urban development’ has been pushed to the forefront of policymaking and politics as the world wakes up to the impacts of climate change and the destructive effects of the Anthropocene. Climate change has emerged to be one of the biggest challenges faced by our planet today, threatening both built and natural systems with long-term consequences, which may be irreversible. While there is a vast body of literature on sustainability and sustainable urban development, there is currently limited focus on how to cohesively bring together the vital issues of the planning, development, and management of sustainable cities. Moreover, it has been widely stated that current practices and lifestyles cannot continue if we are to leave a healthy living planet to not only the next generation, but also to the generations beyond. The current global school strikes for climate action (known as Fridays for Future) evidences this. The book advocates the view that the focus needs to rest on ways in which our cities and industries can become green enough to avoid urban ecocide. This book fills a gap in the literature by bringing together issues related to the planning, development, and management of cities and focusing on a triple-bottom-line approach to sustainability.

Abstract

Background: There is an association between intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and subsequent development of diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and hypertension during adult life. With this context, it is vital to give attention about the patterns of body proportion of IUGR babies. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of asymmetric distribution IUGR in contrast to symmetric distribution among babies with low birth weight (LBW). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pediatrics, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barisal,from January 2012 to June 2012, with a total 114 babies with LBW. All singleton newborns, within 24 hours of birth, having birth weight < 2.5 kg was were included. Weight was plotted in weight for gestation age centile chart. Then Ponderal index (PI) was calculated to determine asymmetric and symmetric IUGR by using the formula. Convenient sampling was used. Data were analyzed with SPSS. P value
