The study of PSN-PT ferroelectric relaxor ceramics exhibiting extreme values of some physical parameters near the morphotropic phase boundary is reported. The results are discussed to account for the relaxor properties related to defects and disordering of the PSN-PT system.

Manifestations of relaxor properties similar to those observed in lead magnesium niobates are reported in the 0.05PZN–0.95PSN ceramic solid solution system. Behaviour of the effective dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss with temperature at frequencies between 0.1 and 10 Hz at different field amplitudes are examined in ceramic samples of 0.05PZN–0.95PSN. The temperature T m of the dielectric permittivity maximum is observed to decrease with the increase of the measuring field amplitude E o . Dependence of T m on frequency at strong and weak fields is observed to follow the Fogel-Fulcher law, and the Fogel-Fulcher temperature is found to decrease with the increase of E o . Results of the dielectric studies are discussed in terms of transition from paraelectric to ferroelectric phase through relaxor and glass states in the xPZN-(1 − x)PSN solid solution system.

The growing interest in disordered relaxor ferroelectrics is due to unusual properties mainly related to the existence of broad phase transitions characteristic to the systems. The effects of bias field on the dielectric response and polarisation switching are studied in the 0.5 PbNi 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x PbTiO 3 –(0.5− x ) PbZrO 3 system at different PbTiO 3 :PbZrO 3 ratio. Thermal behaviour of normalised remnant polarisation P r / P max of compositions with content of lead titanate x =0.33 and x =0.35 at frequency 0.1 Hz and different values of field E o are measured. Results of measured polarisation and depolarisation currents are compared with characteristics of polarisation switching. In the case of composition with x =0.33 the value of P r / P max does not depend on the field amplitude in the range 4–10 kV/cm within the thermal interval from 50 to 135 °C. In composition with x =0.35 the interval of P r / P max independent of E o (5–10 kV/cm) is observed closer to the temperature of dielectric permittivity maximum T m ≈180 °C

Conventional technique of solid phase reactions allows one to obtain PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 material with about 20 vol.% of the pyrochlore phase. The latter can be reduced to 5 vol.% by Swartz-Shrout two-stage solid state reaction via MgNb 2 O 6 having the columbite structure. A single-phase perovskite product can be obtained by by the two-stage columbite method from mixtures containing 0.2 mol. parts of overstoichiometric MgO. The best results are obtained by using magnesium carbonate hydroxide pentahydrate (MgCO 3 ) 4 ·Mg(OH) 2 ·5H 2 O as the magnesium source. The modified route yields stoichiometric single-phase PMN.

The reported study is focused on effects of the admixture of lithium (2% Li2O) on the low-frequency dielectric response in lead magnesium niobate ceramics over the 100 -300 K range of temperature. The obtained results reveal an essential thermal broadening of the e′(ν) spectra specific to relaxor ferroelectrics. Dispersion Δe′ = e′1Hz-e′1kHz and values of e′′(ν) in lead magnesium niobate ceramics containing Li are well described by the Cole-Cole equation at temperatures below the e′(T) maximum. Electrocaloric effect (ECE) of pure and modified PbSc 1/2 Ta 1/2 O 3 (PST) and its solid solutions and PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 - PbTiO 3 ferroelectric ceramics is studied at different temperatures and external electric field intensities. High value of (ECE) up to 2.3 K is observed in PST ceramics at modification in B sublattice by Co 3+ and Sb 5+ ions. The features of ECE in PST are explained by significant structure rearrangement at electric field induced Fm3m M R3m phase transition and high long range ordering of B ions in the ABO 3 perovskite structure. A further increase of ECE is observed in ceramic multilayer capacitors at higher electric field intensities up to 138 kV/cm.

Reversible dielectric permeability l ' r (E = ) of 0.5PbNi 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 - 0.5Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 ferroelectric ceramics is studied at different lead titanate to zirconate ratios. Particular features of dielectric response - fractures and small plateaux on the l ' r (E = ) curve are observed at some values of the bias field E = . The anomalies are explained by phase transformations induced by applied field and suggest of broadening of the morphotropic phase boundary in the system.

Lead-free potassium sodium niobate (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 (KNN) has been prepared via conventional ceramic processing method. The influence of 0.5 wt% - 1.5 wt% MnO2 and WO3 addition on the sintering, crystallographic structure, microstructure and dielectric properties of KNN has been investigated. Optimal sintering temperatures of KNN ceramics were observed to be in the narrow interval: 1090 °C - 1110 °C for MnO2 doped KNN; 1150 °C - 1170 °C for pure KNN and doped with WO3. XRD patterns showed that all the samples have single perovskite structure with monoclinic structure. Obtaining of novel thin film materials for electrically tuneable capacities is one of the current problems of ferroelectric material application. The most appropriate materials are the ferroelectric lead-containing niobates: PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN), PhZn1/3Nb2/3Os (PZN), PbNi1/3Nb2/3O3 (PNN) and their solid solutions were synthesized by solid state reactions at 800–900 °C from oxides. Results of the studies of thermal dependence of dielectric permeability and loss factors of the synthesized solutions are provided together with reciprocal dielectric permeability as function of temperature and electric field intensity. The dielectric characteristics of nonlinear materials are reported experimentally observed.

Dielectric response in the SrBi2Ta2O9 ceramics is studied over a wide range of temperatures at fields up to Emax ≈ 18 kV/cm. Dependence of dielectric permittivity on field intensity is analyzed at different temperatures. A series of polarization loops are obtained at frequencies 0.1 Hz, 1 Hz, and 10 Hz. The hysteresis at switching polarization is displayed by the shape of polarization loops changing with the field amplitude from bi-angles to quasi-saturated loop patterns of a high degree of rectangularity. The ratio of remnant polarization to maximum polarization as function of field amplitude is presented. Thermal behaviour of the coercive field and the half-width of polarization loops is analysed. Dielectric response of Ba 0.95 Pb 0.05 TiO 3 ceramics doped with 0.1 and 1 wt.% of Co 2 O 3 , synthesized by conven- tional high-temperature method, wa s studied in wide temperature and frequency range. The temperature dependences of the real and the imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity of the ceramics were compared with those of BaTiO 3 and Ba 0.95 Pb 0.05 TiO 3. The addition of Co 3+ ions results in a broadening of dielectric anom- alies related to the transition to p araelectric cubic phase, and the structural transition between the tetragonal and the orthorhombic phases. At low temperatures (125 – 200 K) the dielectric absorp- tion of Co-doped Ba 0.95 Pb 0.05 TiO 3 ceramics was found to exhibit relaxor-like properties. The die lectric response has been found to contain the contributions characte ristic of fluctuations of the polar nanoregion boundaries and reorientations of the dipole moments between allowed directions in the nanoregions in the rhombohe- dral and the orthorhombic phases. The behavior speaks in favor of ordering of polar defects in the host lattice of Ba 0.95 Pb 0.05 TiO 3 in a form polar nanoregions.

The publication costs of this article were covered by the Estonian Academy of Sciences and the University of Tartu., The features of the dependence of the bulk coefficient of thermal expansion of the (1-x)Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 solid solution studied in the series of x = 0-0.8 in the temperature range from 100 to 750 K are reported. The obtained data and observed anomalies of thermal expansion are compared with dielectric properties, heat capacity, and the phase diagram of concentration. In the present work lead-free compositions with a stoichiometric formula (1−x)(K 0.5 Na 0.5 )Nb 1−y Sb y O 3 -xBaTiO 3 (x=0.01, 0.02, 0.04; y=0.04, 0.07) were produced by solid state sintering method. Manganese oxide MnO 2 was used as a dopant in order to lower the sintering temperatures. The influence of BaTiO 3 on the microstructure, density, mechanical and electrical properties of Sb-substituted KNN ceramics was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis revieled pure perovskite structure. Microstructural investigation of the ceramics samples showed homogeneous structure with a slightly rounded cubical grain shape. Phase transition temperature T c is shifted to lower temperatures in comparison to Sb-substituted KNN ceramics. Phase transition peak at T c becomes broader indicating the diffuse phase transition.

In this paper results of new far-infrared and middle-infrared measurements (wavenumber range of 4000cm-1 - 100cm-1) in the range of the temperature from 300K to 8K of the CoFe2O4 ceramic are presented. The bands positions and their shapes are the same in the wide temperature range. The quality of the sample was investigated by X-ray, EDS and EPMA studies. The CoFe2O4 reveals the cubic structure (Fd-3m) in the temperature range from 85K to 360 K without any traces of distortion. On the current level of knowledge the polycrystalline CoFe2O4 does not exhibit phase transition in the temperature range from 8 K to 300 K., 10 pages, 6 figures

The dielectric nonlinearity in layered ferroelectric ceramics of BaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 and SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 is studied by analysing polarisation loops and measuring dielectric permittivity as a function of frequency. In case of BaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 the system has a broad phase transition manifesting essential features of a slow relaxation of polarisation; in case of SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 the processes contributing to polarisation switching are driven by rearrangement of the domain structure.

Lead-free BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x = 0; 0.025; 0.125) ceramics have been obtained by a conventional method. A single-phase perovskite structure of the ceramics was identified by the X-ray diffraction method. EDS analysis, performed for the individual grains of the tested sample, showed a good homogeneous distribution of all elements throughout the grains. The thermal behaviour of BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x = 0; 0.025; 0.125) ceramics was studied using the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Measurements showed the influence of Zr addition on the character of phase transition in the BaTiO3 structure. The results were compared with these ones obtained for pure BaTiO3.

Features of dielectric response to frequencies in the 0.25.1000 Hz range in ceramic samples of BaBi2Nb2O9, Na0,5Bi8.5Ti2Nb4O27, Na0,5Bi8.5Ti2Ta4O27, and K0,5Bi8.5Ti2Nb4O27 compounds are reported. Considerable relaxation of e'(T) and e"(T) maximums has been observed at all frequencies in BaBi2Nb2O9. Na0,5Bi8.5Ti2Nb4O27 and Na0,5Bi8.5Ti2Ta4O27 are characterised by broad maximums on e'(T) at frequencies below 100 Hz and a weak anomaly in K0,5Bi8.5Ti2Nb4O27 at temperatures well below the paraelectric phase transition. Increasing values of e' are observed at low temperatures in compounds containing sodium.
