Abstract

This paper develops a nowcasting model for the German economy. The model outperforms a number of alternatives and produces forecasts not only for GDP but also for other key variables. We show that the inclusion of foreign variables improves the model's performance, while financial variables do not. Additionally, a comprehensive model averaging exercise reveals that factor extraction in a single model delivers slightly better results than averaging across models. Finally, we estimate a "news" index for the German economy constructed as a weighted average of the nowcast errors related to each variable included in the model.

Abstract

Aim: We tested whether species–area relationships of small islands differ among plant growth forms and whether this influences the prevalence of the small-island effect (SIE). The SIE states that species richness on small islands is independent of island area or relates to area in a different way compared with larger islands. Abstract

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

Abstract

ATLASGAL is an 870-µm dust survey of 420 deg2 the inner Galactic plane and has been used to identify ∼10 000 dense molecular clumps. Dedicated follow-up observations and complementary surveys are used to characterize the physical properties of these clumps, map their Galactic distribution, and investigate the evolutionary sequence for high-mass star formation. The analysis of the ATLASGAL data is ongoing: We present an up-to-date version of the catalogue. We have classified 5007 clumps into four evolutionary stages (quiescent, protostellar, young stellar objects and H  ii regions) and find similar numbers of clumps in each stage, suggesting a similar lifetime. The luminosity-to-mass (L bol/ M fwhm) ratio curve shows a smooth distribution with no significant kinks or discontinuities when compared to the mean values for evolutionary stages indicating that the star formation process is continuous and that the observational stages do not represent fundamentally different stages or changes in the physical mechanisms involved. We compare the evolutionary sample with other star formation tracers (methanol and water masers, extended green objects and molecular outflows) and find that the association rates with these increases as a function of evolutionary stage, confirming that our classification is reliable. This also reveals a high association rate between quiescent sources and molecular outflows, revealing that outflows are the earliest indication that star formation has begun and that star formation is already ongoing in many of the clumps that are dark even at 70 µm. Abstract

The determination of the effective electron neutrino mass via kinematic analysis of beta and electron capture spectra is considered to be model-independent since it relies on energy and momentum conservation. At the same time the precise description of the expected spectrum goes beyond the simple phase space term. In particular for electron capture processes, many-body electron-electron interactions lead to additional structures besides the main resonances in calorimetrically measured spectra. A precise description of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho spectrum is fundamental for understanding the impact of low intensity structures at the endpoint region where a finite neutrino mass affects the shape most strongly. We present a low-background and high-energy resolution measurement of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho spectrum obtained in the framework of the ECHo experiment. We study the line shape of the main resonances and multiplets with intensities spanning three orders of magnitude. We discuss the need to introduce an asymmetric line shape contribution due to Auger–Meitner decay of states above the auto-ionisation threshold. With this we determine an enhancement of count rate at the endpoint region of about a factor of 2, which in turn leads to an equal reduction in the required exposure of the experiment to achieve a given sensitivity on the effective electron neutrino mass.

Abstract

We have constructed the largest sample of dust-associated class II 6.7 GHz methanol masers yet obtained. New measurements from the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) survey were combined with the 870 μmμm APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) and the 850 μmμm JCMT Plane Survey (JPS). Together with two previous studies we have now identified the host clumps for 958 methanol masers across the Galactic Plane, covering approximately 99 per cent of the MMB catalogue and increasing the known sample of dust-associated masers by over 30 per cent. We investigate correlations between the physical properties of the clumps and masers using distances and luminosities drawn from the literature. Clumps hosting methanol masers are significantly more compact and have higher volume densities than the general population of clumps. We determine a minimum volume density threshold of n(H2) ≥ 104 cm−3 for the efficient formation of intermediate- and high-mass stars. We find 6.7 GHz methanol masers are associated with a distinct part of the evolutionary process (Lbol/Mfwhm ratios of between 100.6 and 102.2) and have well-defined turning on and termination points. We estimate the lower limit for the mass of embedded objects to be ≥6 M⊙ and the statistical lifetime of the methanol maser stage to be ∼3.3 × 104 yr. This suggests that methanol masers are indeed reliable tracers of high-mass star formation, and indicates that the evolutionary period traced by this marker is relatively rapid.

141. In-trap Laser Desorption in an EBIT for the Production of Highly Charged Ions of Rare Isotopes at Pentatrap

Abstract

Highly charged ions (HCI) are important for precision measurements in fundamental physics, for example, they increase the precision of Penning-trap mass spectrometry (PTMS) since the relative uncertainty scales with the charge of the ion. The production of HCI without the need of large scale facilities is realized by electron beam ion traps (EBITs) [1]. This thesis reports on the optimization of a novel, highly-efficient loading scheme for rare isotopes in EBITs, namely in-trap laser desorption in a Heidelberg compact EBIT (HC-EBIT) [2], the Tip-EBIT. The production and subsequent extraction of HCI of 165Ho, using sample sizes as small as 1012 atoms (about 270 pg), is demonstrated for charge states up to 47+. The target could be used for several ten thousand laser shots with an overall production of more than 107 ions of a single charge state. Additionally, hydrogen-like calcium (40Ca19+) has been produced and extracted, demonstrating the applicability of the loading technique for lighter elements. In the course of this thesis, the Tip-EBIT was attached to the Pentatrap PTMS experiment, as a source for HCI of rare isotopes. The first measurement will be the mass-ratio determination of 163Ho and 163Dy, for which FAC calculations were carried out within this thesis to avoid charge states with low-lying metastable atomic states. This will contribute an independent value of the energy available for the electron capture decay (QEC-value) of this rare holmium isotope to the ECHo collaboration. The aim of the collaboration is the determination of the electron neutrino mass on the sub-eV level [3].

Abstract

Context: High-mass stars are formed within massive molecular clumps, where a large number of stars form close together. The evolution of the clumps with different masses and luminosities is mainly regulated by its high-mass stellar content and the formation of such objects is still not well understood. Aims. In this work, we characterise the mid-J CO emission in a statistical sample of 99 clumps (TOP100) selected from the ATLASGAL survey that are representative of the Galactic proto-cluster population. Methods: High-spatial resolution APEX-CHAMP+ maps of the CO (6–5) and CO (7–6) transitions were obtained and combined with additional single-pointing APEX-FLASH+ spectra of the CO (4–3) line. The data were convolved to a common angular resolution of 13??.4. We analysed the line profiles by fitting the spectra with up to three Gaussian components, classified as narrow or broad, and computed CO line luminosities for each transition. Additionally, we defined a distance-limited sample of 72 sources within 5 kpc to check the robustness of our analysis against beam dilution effects. We study the correlations of the line luminosities and profiles for the three CO transitions with the clump properties and investigate if and how they change as a function of the evolution. Results: All sources were detected above 3-? in all three CO transitions and most of the sources exhibit broad CO emission likely associated with molecular outflows. We found that the extension of the mid-J CO emission is correlated with the size of the dust emission traced by the Herschel-PACS 70 µm maps. The CO line luminosity (LCO) is correlated with the luminosity and mass of the clumps. However, it does not correlate with the luminosity-to-mass ratio. Conclusions: The dependency of the CO luminosity with the properties of the clumps is steeper for higher-J transitions. Abstract

The environmental fate of iodine is of general geochemical interest as well as of substantial concern in the context of nuclear waste repositories and reprocessing plants. Soils, and in particular soil organic matter (SOM), are known to play a major role in retaining and storing iodine. Therefore, we investigated iodide and iodate sorption by four different reference soils for contact times up to 30 days. Selective sequential extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were used to characterize binding behavior to different soil components, and the oxidation state and local structure of iodine. For iodide, sorption was fast with 73 to 96% being sorbed within the first 24 h, whereas iodate sorption increased from 11–41% to 62–85% after 30 days. The organic fraction contained most of the adsorbed iodide and iodate. XAS revealed a rapid change of iodide into organically bound iodine when exposed to soil, while iodate did not change its speciation. Migration behavior of both iodine species has to be considered as iodide appears to be the less mobile species due to fast binding to SOM, but with the potential risk of mobilization when oxidized to iodate.
