Le conseil technique pour la gestion des prairies naturelles ou semi-naturelles se heurte depuis longtemps à la difficulté de mise en oeuvre de méthodes basées sur l'étude floristique de la végétation. Très consommatrice en temps, nécessitant une bonne connaissance en botanique et peu généralisables, ces méthodes sont peu appliquées par les conseillers agricoles sans un travail de simplification. Nous proposons une démarche adaptée de travaux en écologie permettant une lecture différente de la végétation qui peut ne pas faire appel à une reconnaissance botanique exhaustive. Les espèces sont regroupées selon des types fonctionnels construits à partir de traits biologiques (foliaires et phénologiques) mesurés ou issus des bases de données actuellement en construction. La végétation des prairies naturelles peut être décrite de manière plus simple que la composition botanique, par la constitution de groupes d'espèces ayant des fonctions similaires et partageant des caractéristiques biologiques (traits) communes. Ces groupes fonctionnels sont qualifiés de réponse ou d'effet selon qu'ils sont établis en fonction de la réponse des espèces aux variations de facteurs du milieu ou de leur effet sur le fonctionnement de l'écosystème prairial. Des traits foliaires tels que la surface spécifique foliaire, la teneur en matière sèche et la durée de vie des feuilles peuvent être utilisés pour définir les types fonctionnels dominants dans la prairie. Ils peuvent permettre de classer les formations végétales en fonction de gradients de fertilité ou d'utilisation, et de définir leur valeur d'usage agricole et/ou environnementale. Les principes et l'adaptation de la démarche aux cas des végétations complexes et fortement anthropisées sont présentés. Nous en discutons les applications et les limites., The management of natural grassland is based on a good knowledge of their vegetation, but this is time-consuming and requires botanical expertise. A new, lighter, approach is now proposed, involving the grouping together of the forage species according to functional types based on biological features. The vegetation of natural grasslands can be described in a simpler way than by its botanical composition, thanks to the constitution of groups of species with similar functions, sharing some common biological features (traits). These functional groups are called response groups or effect groups according to whether they are defined by their response to the variations of environmental factors or by their effect on the workings of the grassland eco-system. Foliar traits such as the leaf specific area, leaf dry-matter content and leaf life span can be utilized for the definition of the dominant functional types in the grassland. They can be used to classify the plant formations according to fertility gradients or utilization gradients, and to ascertain their agricultural and/or environmental value. The principles of the method are presented, as well as its adaptation to cases where the vegetation is complex and strongly affected by man. The applications and limits are discussed.

National audience; More than 10 years ago, a method for the diagnosis of the nitrogen nutrition level of a plant cover was defined, that was based on the analysis of the plants’nitrogen content. The present paper shows its possible uses when applied to pastures made up of grasses. It can be used for the management of nitrogen fertilization : 1) for short-term steering (instanced by the paddocks of a rotationally grazed field and the splitting of nitrogen dressings on silage pastures) and 2) for the diagnosis of a set of plots having all the same purpose in order to determine the level of fertilization in the year n+1 from the results of year n. Another set of applications regards the creation of regional references through a better utilization of field experiments (5 very different examples are given) and also through an improved exploitation of the data supplied by agricultural surveys. Lastly, the limits of the method are shown (application to pastures with a high clover content) and the simplifications considered possible.; Une méthode de diagnostic du niveau de nutrition en azote d'un couvert végétal à partir de l'analyse en azote de la plante a été mise au point il y a maintenant plus de 10 ans. Cette méthode peut être utilisée pour gérer la fertilisation azotée des prairies à base de graminées : pour le pilotage à court terme (exemples de parcelles conduites en pâturage tournant et du fractionnement des apports pour des prairies ensilées), et pour le diagnostic d'un ensemble de parcelles ayant une même fonction, en vue d'adapter la fertilisation de l'année suivante. Elle permet aussi la création de référentiels régionaux, d'une part en tirant mieux parti des essais agronomiques (5 exemples très différents), d'autre part en valorisant mieux les informations issues d'enquêtes culturales. Dans une dernière partie, sont précisées les limites de la méthode (application à des prairies avec une contribution importante de trèfle blanc) et les simplifications qu'il est possible d'envisager.

The surface free energy components of clay-organic complexes were determined to assess to what extent an organic adsorbate modified the surface properties of the mineral, insofar as the stability of soil aggregates is concerned. Adsorption isotherms for two synthetic, humic acid-like polymers were determined on a Ca-montmorillonite. From contact-angle measurements performed on dry surfaces, the surface free energy properties of the clay-organic complexes were determined using the two-liquid-phases method (water and hydrocarbons). This method allows both the dispersive and nondispersive components of the solid surface free energy, 3,Ds and 7 v, to be determined. The results show that a very small amount of polymer (1% by weight) adsorbed on the external surfaces of the montmorillonite decreased markedly the surface free energy components of the clay: 3,Ds decreased from 75 to 28 mJ /m ~ for polycondensate catechol (PC) and from 75 to 30 mJ /m 2 for polycondensate catechol triglycine (PCT), whereas 3,vs ranged from 35 to 16 rrd/m 2 (PC) and from 35 to 17 mJ/m 2 (PCT). Although their chemical compositions were different, both polymers similarly modified ~sD and -iPs . Increasing the amount of polymer adsorbed (from 1% to 3.5% by weight) affected mostly 3,vs , which became as low as 5 mJ/m:; meanwhile, 3'~ decreased from 30 to 23 mJ/m 2. Possibly, the molecular orientation of the adsorbate changed in the process of dehydration. Following adsorption of synthetic humic acid-like polymers, dry Ca-montmorillonite complexes displayed 3's values < 50 mJ/m 2, which were consistent with the solid-water contact angles measured in air., Les composantes de l'énergie libre de surface sont mesurées pour des complexes organo-minéraux. Cette étude est menée dans le but de vérifier de quelle manière un revêtement organique modifie les propriétés de surface du minéral et peut jouer sur la stabilité structurale. On a déterminé les isothermes d'adsorption sur une montmorillonite calcique pour deux polymères synthétiques modules d'acides humiques. L'énergie libre de surface des complexes organo-minéraux est calculée à partir de la mesure des angles de contact obtenus sur des surfaces déshydratées avec la méthode à deux phases liquides (eau et hydrocarbures). Cette méthode permet de déterminer à la fois "r~ et ~,~, qui sont respectivement la composante polaire et la composante dispersive de l'énergie de surface 3's. Les r6sultats montrent qu'une quantité très faible de polymère (1% en poids) adsorbé sur les surfaces externes de la montmorillonite diminue de manière importante les composantes de l'énergie libre de surface du minéral: 3,Ds diminue de 75 ~t 28 mJ/m 2 pour le polycondensat catéchol (PC) et de 75 h 30 mJ/m 2 pour le polycondensat catéchol triglycine (PCT), alors que 3,Ps varie de 35 ~ 16 mJ /m 2 (PC) et de 35 ~t 17 mJ /m 2 (PCT). Bien que leurs compositions chimiques soient différentes, les deux polymères modifient pareillement ~sP e t "y~'. Une augmentation sensible des quantités adsorbées (de 1% ~t 3,5% en poids) affecte principalement 3,vs qui diminue jusqu'à une valeur de 5 mJ/m 2, alors que "y~ passe de 30 h 23 mJ/m 2. Ces modifications importantes sont attribuées à un changement d'orientation des polymères adsorbés, susceptible de s'être produit au cours de la déshydratation. Après adsorption de polymères synthétiques modèles d'acides humiques, la montmorillonite calcique à l'état sec présente des valeurs de "Vs inférieures ~ 50 mJ/m 2 qui sont en accord avec les angles de contact solide-eau-vapeur qui sont mesurés.

International audience; The exchange of magnesium for calcium at 298 K on a montmorillonitic soil separate (principally clay and silt) was investigated in a 50 mol m~3 perchlorate background at pH 5,6, and 7. The charge fraction of sodium in the aqueous solution phase was controlled at 0.70 or 0.85 during the exchange experiments, resulting in average exchangeable sodium percentages ranging from 5 to 25% on the soil. Exchange isotherms for magnesium indicated some preference on the soil for calcium over magnesium. This preference was attributed primarily to the presence of organic matter associated with the soil separate. However, the exchange isotherms showed no effect of pH in the range between 5 and 7, and no effect of exchangeable sodium percentage in the range between 0 and 25%.

International audience; Surface energies of montmorillonite-alkylammonium complexes were determined from contact angle measurements performed using the two-liquid phase method. An apparent surface energy ?a (with),a= yP + yD) was determined for partially hydrated surfaces. When the length of the organic ion increases, that is to say when the part of the organic surface increases, ?s approaches values characteristic of low surface energy polymers. It was possible to correlate the variation of yP and yD with the nature of the surface, i.e. organic/mineral, hydrated/dry. At complete coverage of the mineral, the surface properties measured are the organic coating ones.

International audience; Fertilization management of intensive crops requires control methods to adjust the mineral fertilizer input to the actual needs of the crop. This paper outlines a method to estimate phosphorus (P) nutrient status of maize (Zea mays hybrid c.v. Volga) by analyzing the plant sap extracted from vascular tissue of the stem base. Phosphate concentration is analyzed with phosphomolybdic complex reaction, using test strip with a small autonomous pocket reflectometer. The experimental conditions for maize diagnosis P nutrition are: stem base harvested between 10 and 12 a.m., phosphate concentration measured in sap squeezed by a hand hydraulic press. The critical level of P nutrition should be between 20 and 25 ppm. The validation of this method by comparison of colorimetry and chromatography measurement on different plant P status indicates a reverse correlation between weight production and P lower stem sap concentration.
