Abstract

Mechanical and chemical antimicrobial intervention is the mainstay of preventive periodontal therapy. Successful periodontal maintenance care depends upon the ability of oral health care professionals to combat periodontal infections, and patient compliance with prescribed follow-up care. Since tooth brushing, flossing, and oral rinsing do not reach pathogens present in furcations and at the depths of deep periodontal pockets, adequate oral hygiene should include subgigingival treatment with home irrigators or other appropriate self-care remedies in patients with these conditions. Providone-iodine for professional use and dilluted bleach for self-care are inexpensive and valuable antimicrobial agents in periodontal maintenance. The present article outlines the prudent use of antimicrobial therapy in periodontal maintenance. Keywords. Abstract

Hardin's 1968 concept of a 'commons dilemma' has received much attention from behavioral scientists concerned with current social and environmental problems that deal with shared resources. The dilemma is that selfish, competitive behavior which appears to be advantageous to the individual actually depletes shared resources to the long-term disadvantage of the group. Various laboratory techniques have been employed to study cooperation and competition in commons dilemma simulations. Two programs are described, which use a multiuser computer system and facilitate the operation of one such simulation procedure.

Abstract

The study IS conducted to assess the effect of pallet distance with regard to a constant lift origin on the torso kinematics and a measure of low back disorder risk. It is concluded that increasing the pallet distance with regard to the lifting origin, with the intention to influence the participant to take a step during a palletizing task does not appear to be an effective intervention strategy to reduce the risk of low back disorder associated with torso kinematics.

136. Towards a new classification of rivers based on generic gage height - discharge rating curves for low-cost estimation of stream discharge

2015 annual AGU hydrology days was held at Colorado State University on March 23 - March 25, 2015., Includes bibliographical references., The objective of this research is to classify rivers based upon generic gage height-discharge rating curves so as to reduce the number of measurements required for rating curve development. The first step has been classification according to the uniqueness of the gage height-discharge relationship. The USGS National Water Information System database of 3.68 million pairs of gage height vs. discharge measurements at 61,240 gaging stations was imported into a Python-driven data manipulation script, resulting in 15,153 gaging stations after removal of incomplete and inconsistent data. At each gaging station, the linear relationship ZlnGH = mZlnQ = b was determined, where ZlnGH and ZlnQ are the Z-scores of the logarithms of gage height and discharge, respectively. Each linear relationship was converted into a normal distribution with mean and standard deviation equal to m and its standard error, respectively. Summation of the normal distributions showed a single peak at m = 0.991, where m = 1 indicates a unique gage height-discharge relationship. There are no gaging stations with m > 1, equivalent to no gaging stations with variation in discharge without variation in gage height. Over 30% of gaging stations had m < 0.9, indicating significant variation in gage height without variation in discharge. Based on 209 gaging stations in Utah, extreme independence of gage height from discharge (m < 0.6) can be avoiding by not locating gaging stations close to either the upstream or downstream confluence (within 10% of the reach), which precludes the effects of flood waves and reverse flow.

Abstract

Results reveal that the cationic liposome formulations, CDAN/DOPE and DC-Chol/DOPE, differ markedly in their DNA complexation properties with rehydration and protonation preceding before complexation with plasmid DNA in the former. Furthermore, the CDAN/DOPE liposomes are structurally fluid than the other type and induce fluctuations in the DNA structure.

Abstract

Cancer is a multifaceted condition, in which a senescent cell begins dividing in an irregular manner due to various factors such as DNA damage, growth factors and inflammation. Inflammation is not typically discussed as carcinogenic; however, a significant percentage of cancers arise from chronic microbial infections and damage brought on by chronic inflammation. A hallmark cancer-inducing microbe is Helicobacter pylori and its causation of peptic ulcers and potentially gastric cancer. This review discusses the recent developments in understanding microbes in health and disease and their potential role in the progression of cancer. To date, microbes can be linked to almost every cancer, including colon, pancreatic, gastric, and even prostate. We discuss the known mechanisms by which these microbes can induce cancer growth and development and how inflammatory cells may contribute to cancer progression. We also discuss new treatments that target the chronic inflammatory conditions and their associated cancers, and the impact microbes have on treatment success. Finally, we examine common dietary misconceptions in relation to microbes and cancer and how to avoid getting caught up in the misinterpretation and over inflation of the results.
