This paper presents an electromagnetic-mechanical repair patch (EMRP) to restore the mechanical and electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption performance of a radar-absorbing structure (RAS) damaged by lightning strike. Several researchers have primarily focused on ensuring high repair efficiency, particularly in terms of the primary load-bearing properties of repaired fiber-reinforced plastics. However, no study has proposed a practical repair approach that considers the multi-functionality of the radar-absorbing structure. The EMRP method can be used to repair lightning strike damage in a radar-absorbing structure with electroless nickel-plated glass fabric, considering the need to maintain structural integrity and electrical continuity to achieve a high repair efficiency. Damage due to an artificial lightning strike was assessed in terms of area and depth of the damage using image processing, ultrasonic C-scan, and micro X-ray inspection. The EM characteristics of one-dimensional return loss scanning and the echo radar-cross-section level were measured to verify the stealth performance of the repaired radar absorber in the X-band. In addition, the tensile test results demonstrated that the repaired radar absorber had a high recovery rate of 93% compared to the pristine radar absorber. The experimental results obtained in this study validate the use of the proposed EMRP method in repairing radar-absorbing structures.

In this paper, a microwave fluidic glucose sensor based on dual complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) with a switching circuit is proposed for non-invasive and continuous glucose concentration detection. A CSRR has been designed to detect subtle changes in the dielectric constant of glucose solutions, and the electric field distribution is utilized to determine the effective sensing region. In a well-controlled environment, the glucose concentration can be detected by tracking the transmission coefficient of the designed CSRR. However, because the variations in dielectric constant with the glucose concentration are very small, the environmental factors (i.e., ambient temperature and relative humidity) can be dominant compared to the glucose concentration. To qualify the effect of the environmental factors, the variation in the transmission coefficient of the CSRR has been measured when the ambient temperature condition is varied from 293 K to 313 K and the relative humidity is varied from 30% to 90% inside temperature- and humidity-controlled chamber. Moreover, the environmental effects are calibrated out using two identical CSRRs with the switching circuit: one detects changes in the glucose concentration, while the other operates as a reference for environmental factors. After the elimination of the environmental effects, glucose concentrations in the range of 0 mg/dL to 400 mg/dL have been measured, and the sensitivity is 0.008dB/(100mg/dL). In addition, the reproducibility of the proposed sensor is verified by repeated measurements. It is demonstrated that the proposed sensor can detect glucose concentrations under practical environmental conditions.

Purpose Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of brain tumor and has poor survival outcomes, even after a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Temozolomide is the only agent that has been shown to be effective against GBM, suggesting that combination of temozolomide with other agents may be more effective. Niclosamide, an FDA approved anthelmintic agent, has shown anti-cancer effects against human colon, breast, prostate cancers as well as GBM. However, the efficacy of the combination of niclosamide with temozolomide against GBM tumorspheres (TSs) has not been determined. We hypothesized that the combined treatment could effectively suppress GBM TSs. Methods GBM TSs (TS15-88, GSC11) were treated with niclosamide and/or temozolomide. Combined effects of two drugs were evaluated by measuring viability, neurosphere formation, and 3D-invasion in collagen matrix. Transcriptional profiles of GBM TS were analyzed using RNA sequencing. In vivo anticancer efficacy of combined drugs was tested in a mouse orthotopic xenograft model. Results Combination treatment of niclosamide and temozolomide significantly inhibited the cell viability, stemness, and invasive properties of GBM TSs. This combined treatment significantly down-regulated the expression of epithelial mesenchymal transition-related markers, Zeb1, N-cadherin, and β-catenin. The combined treatment also significantly decreased tumor growth in orthotopic xenograft models. Conclusion The combination of niclosamide and temozolomide effectively decreased the stemness and invasive properties of GBM TSs, suggesting that this regimen may be therapeutically effective in treating patients with GBM.

In this paper, a relative humidity monitoring sensor based on an active resonator with PEDOT:PSS is studied in the microwave regime. The proposed active resonator is patterned on a printed circuit board and excited by electromagnetic field coupling. The active resonator consists of two parts: a passive core resonator and an active circuit. The passive core resonator senses the humidity via the PEDOT:PSS conducting polymer film, which is located in the area of the passive core resonator with the strongest electric field. The active circuit compensates for the loss of the passive core resonator to enhance the quality factor and thus improve the sensitivity of the relative humidity sensor. By combining the passive core resonator with the active circuit, the active resonator exhibits a high quality factor (2887), which is 90 times that of the passive core resonator alone. Moreover, the sensitivity of the proposed humidity sensor is improved when using the active resonator. To verify the performance of the proposed humidity sensor, a commercial sensor is placed alongside the proposed sensor in a well-controlled environment chamber. According to the experimental results, as the relative humidity increases, the transmission coefficient (S21) increases, while the resonance frequency decreases. As a result, the sensor exhibits an increase in S21 of 3.58 dB and a decrease in the resonance frequency of 8.85 MHz when the relative humidity changes from 30% to 85%.

This paper presents the electromagnetic interference characteristics of the high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), a well-known display interface, and quantitatively offers the possibility of information from the leakage in the perspective of radio communication. After analyzing the leakage characteristics, a pseudo-signal model is generated based on the characteristics and behavioral features of the software-defined radio. Subsequently, the model is utilized to investigate the performance of frame-averaging to improve the low signal-to-noise ratio of sensitive information contained in the leakage. In addition, the frame-averaging scheme is quantitatively analyzed under various environmental assumptions. Based on these contributions, the paper offers several indexes that quantitatively present meaningful information in EM leakage. Finally, the actual measurement results are compared with those of the pseudo-model to verify our work.

Considering the high metastatic potential of colorectal cancer (CRC), the inhibition of metastasis is important for anti-CRC therapy.

A structural protein of SARS-CoV-2, nucleocapsid (N) protein is abundantly expressed during viral replication. The N protein is phosphorylated by glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3 on the serine/arginine (SR) rich motif located in disordered regions. Although phosphorylation by GSK-3β constitutes a critical event for viral replication, the molecular mechanism underlying N phosphorylation is not well understood. In this study, we found the putative alpha-helix L/FxxxL/AxxRL motif known as the GSK-3 interacting domain (GID), commonly found in many endogenous GSK-3β binding proteins, such as Axins, FRATs, WWOX and GSKIP. Indeed, N interacts with GSK-3β similarly to Axin, and Leu to Glu substitution of the GID abolished the interaction, with loss of N phosphorylation. Unlike with endogenous GID proteins, the N interaction neither disturbs endogenous GSK-3 activity nor regulates subsequent canonical Wnt activity and the Snail-EMT program. Notably, N abundance in SARS-CoV-2 is incomparably high compared to other coronaviruses, such as 229E, OC43 and HKU1. Compared to other coronaviruses, N harbors a CDK1 primed phosphorylation site and Gly-rich linker for enhanced phosphorylation by GSK-3β. Furthermore, we found that the S202R mutant found in Delta and R203K/G204R mutant found in the Omicron variant allows increased abundance and hyper-phosphorylation of N. Our observations suggest that the emergence of GID and mutations for increased phosphorylation in N may have contributed to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and evolution of variants, respectively. Further study, especially in a BSL3-equipped facility, is required to elucidate the functional importance of GID and N phosphorylation in SARS-CoV-2 and variants.

With the advancement of technology, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, are being used in numerous applications. However, the illegal use of UAVs, such as in terrorism and spycams, has also increased, which has led to active research on anti-drone methods. Various anti-drone methods have been proposed over time; however, the most representative method is to apply intentional electromagnetic interference to drones, especially to their sensor modules. In this paper, we review various studies on the effect of intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) on the sensor modules. Various studies on IEMI sources are reviewed and classified on the basis of the power level, information needed, and frequency. To demonstrate the application of drone-sensor modules, major sensor modules used in drones are briefly introduced, and the setup and results of the IEMI experiment performed on them are described. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness and limitations of the proposed methods and present perspectives for further research necessary for the actual application of anti-drone technology.

In this paper, a numerical algorithm for the electromagnetic scattering analysis of singly curved dielectric structures, which can be applied to a canopy of fighter aircraft, is presented with experimental verification. At first, the Poggio–Miller–Chang–Harrington–Wu–Tsai (PMCHWT) method is used as a MoM-based solution for the electromagnetic scattering of a dielectric material. Its formulation was generated with the EFIE formulation in a multi-region condition. The PMCHWT algorithm is implemented with C++ code, and the accuracy is verified by calculating the bistatic RCS of some canonical structures with conductive or dielectric materials. RCS measurement under quasi-anechoic condition is presented with its procedure and calibration method. The monostatic RCS results of a specially modeled singly curved dielectric structures are obtained analytically with the PMCHWT, as well as experimentally, revealing excellent agreement.

Bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) antagonizes transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), which is critically involved in liver fibrogenesis. Here, we designed a micelle formulation consisting of a protein transduction domain (PTD) fused BMP-7 polypeptide (mPTD-BMP-7) to enhance endocytic delivery, and investigated its ability to ameliorate liver fibrosis. The mPTD-BMP-7 formulation was efficiently delivered into cells via endocytosis, where it inhibited TGF-β mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition. After successfully demonstrating delivery of fluorescently labeled mPTD-BMP-7 into the murine liver in vivo, we tested the mPTD-BMP-7 formulation in a murine liver fibrosis model, developed by repeated intraperitoneal injection of hepatotoxic carbon tetrachloride, twice weekly from 4 to 16 weeks. mPTD-BMP-7 effects were tested by injecting the mPTD-BMP-7 formulation (or vehicle control) into the lateral tail at a dose of 50 (n=8) or 500 μg/kg (n=10), also twice per week from 4 to 16 weeks. Vehicle-treated control mice developed fibrous septa surrounding the liver parenchyma and marked portal-to-portal bridging with occasional nodules, whereas mice treated with mPTD-BMP-7 showed only fibrous expansion of some portal areas, with or without short fibrous septa. To measure the electromagnetic properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the X-band, 1-port measurements were performed using a lens horn antenna in a free-space measurement system. Free-space 1-port calibration with translations of the position of the reflector regarding the characteristics of the focused beam lens horn antenna was applied. The intrinsic impedance and complex permittivity of the SFRC were obtained from the measured reflection characteristics. The steel fiber content increased and the electromagnetic properties of the SFRC gradually changed from a dielectric to a conductor, even in very low frequencies compared to the plasma frequencies of general metal, which are optical frequencies. This is considered to be the plasmon effect of the metallic structure formed by the steel fiber. This result is applicable for analyses of the electromagnetic phenomenon of large structures with fiber content.

In this paper, a microwave fluidic glucose sensor based on a microwave resonator coupled with an interferometric system is proposed for sensitivity enhancement. The proposed glucose sensor consists of two parts: a sensing part and a sensitivity enhancement part. The former is composed of a rectangular complementary split ring resonator (CSRR), and the latter is composed of a variable attenuator, a variable phase shifter, two hybrid couplers, and an RF power detector. Because the variation in the electrical properties, which is utilized in the microwave detection scheme, with glucose concentration over the possible concentration range in the human body is very small, improvement of the sensitivity is critical for practical use. Thus, the effective sensing area of the rectangular CSRR is determined by considering the electric field distribution. In addition, magnitude and phase conditions for the effective sensitivity enhancement are derived from a mathematical analysis of the proposed interferometric system. In the present experiment, aimed at demonstrating the detection performance as a function of the glucose concentration in the range of 0 mg/dL to 400 mg/dL, the sensitivity is significantly improved by 48 times by applying the derived conditions for effective sensitivity enhancement. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed glucose sensor for glucose concentrations at a step of 100 mg/dL is verified by the Clarke error grid. Based on the measurement results, the proposed glucose sensor is demonstrated to be applicable to noninvasive and continuous monitoring in practical environments.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of the display signal for an information display device and proposes a synchronization algorithm using its periodicity. The synchronization is the most important to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and it requires two kinds of phase information. One is the phase of the frame, and the other is the phase of the carrier frequency. Hence, this paper describes a methodology to estimate the phase terms, and the result conducted measurement data is verified.

However, not all frequency components of the digital signal are leaked out in a befitting state for reconstruction image. In this study, frequency components of video signals and frequency bands suitable for reconstruction image information are analyzed.

In this paper, a nonconstrained wrist pulse sensor based on radio-frequency proximity coupling at 2.4 GHz is proposed. The proposed system consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) combined with a planar resonator and a phase-locked loop (PLL). The resonator senses the distance variation from the skin occurring because of the wrist pulse and plays a role as a feedback element of the VCO. The oscillation frequency of the VCO varies due to the impedance variation of the resonator, and the PLL operates as a converter of the frequency variation to the DC output voltage variation. The measurement result verified that the proposed system can detect the heart rate in nonconctact and nonconstrained condition with 2 mm gap from the skin.

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) comprises an important biological mechanism not only for cancer progression but also in the therapeutic resistance of cancer cells. While the importance of the protein abundance of EMT-inducers, such as Snail (SNAI1) and Zeb1 (ZEB1), during EMT progression is clear, the reciprocal interactions between the untranslated regions (UTRs) of EMT-inducers via a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network have received little attention. In this study, we found a synchronized transcript abundance of Snail and Zeb1 mediated by a non-coding RNA network in colorectal cancer (CRC). Importantly, the trans-regulatory ceRNA network in the UTRs of EMT inducers is mediated by competition between tumor suppressive miRNA-34 (miR-34) and miRNA-200 (miR-200). Furthermore, the ceRNA network consisting of the UTRs of EMT inducers and tumor suppressive miRs is functional in the EMT phenotype and therapeutic resistance of colon cancer. In The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) samples, we also found genome-wide ceRNA gene sets regulated by miR-34a and miR-200 in colorectal cancer. These results indicate that the ceRNA networks regulated by the reciprocal interaction between EMT gene UTRs and tumor suppressive miRs are functional in CRC progression and therapeutic resistance.

In this letter, a quasi-coaxial through-silicon-via (TSV) is presented for millimeter-wave integrated circuit (IC) packaging. The quasi-coaxial-via (Q-COV) structure in which one side ground metal is removed can minimize the interconnect length when it is mounted, in comparison to the coaxial-via (COV) structure. Simulation analysis shows that the Q-COV has similar electrical characteristics as the COV up to 100 GHz even though there is no GND on one side. To make the small signal core of the Q-COV, the silicon-core metallization process was used and a Si-interposer with Q-COVs of 50- $\mu \text{m}$ core diameter was fabricated and mounted on the glass board for signal transition analysis. The measured transition loss in the mounted Si-interposer was very small, only about 0.6 dB at 100 GHz, and the return loss was more than 20 dB for the entire measured frequency band (0–110 GHz).
