111. Tribological Behavior of New Martensitic Stainless Steels Using Scratch and Dry Wear Test

Abstract

This paper focuses on the tribological characterization of new martensitic stainless steels by two different tribological methods (scratch and dry wear tests) and their comparison to the austenitic standard stainless steel AISI 316L. The scratch test allows obtaining critical loads, scratch friction coefficients, scratch hardness and specific scratch wear rate, and the dry wear test to quantify wear volumes. The damage has been studied by ex situ scanning electron microscopy. Wear resistance was related to the hardness and the microstructure of the studied materials, where martensitic stainless steels exhibit higher scratch wear resistance than the austenitic one, but higher hardness of the martensitic alloys did not give better scratch resistance when comparing with themselves. It has been proved it is possible to evaluate the scratch wear resistance of bulk stainless steels using scratch test. The austenitic material presented lower wear volume than the martensitic ones after the dry wear test due to phase transformation and the hardening during sliding.

113. Effector biology during biotrophic invasion of plant cells

Abstract

Several obligate biotrophic phytopathogens, namely oomycetes and fungi, invade and feed on living plant cells through specialized structures known as haustoria. Deploying an arsenal of secreted proteins called effectors, these pathogens balance their parasitic propagation by subverting plant immunity without sacrificing host cells. Such secreted proteins, which are thought to be delivered by haustoria, conceivably reprogram host cells and instigate structural modifications, in addition to the modulation of various cellular processes. As effectors represent tools to assist disease resistance breeding, this short review provides a bird’s eye view on the relationship between the virulence function of effectors and their subcellular localization in host cells. © 2014 Landes Bioscience.

Abstract

Wild aquatic birds are recognized as the natural reservoir of avian influenza A viruses (AIV), but across high and low pathogenic AIV strains, scientists have yet to rigorously identify most competent hosts for the various subtypes. We examined 11,870 GenBank records to provide a baseline inventory and insight into patterns of global AIV subtype diversity and richness. Further, we conducted an extensive literature review and communicated directly with scientists to accumulate data from 50 non-overlapping studies and over 250,000 birds to assess the status of historic sampling effort. We then built virus subtype sample-based accumulation curves to better estimate sample size targets that capture a specific percentage of virus subtype richness at seven sampling locations. Our study identifies a sampling methodology that will detect an estimated 75% of circulating virus subtypes from a targeted bird population and outlines future surveillance and research priorities that are needed to explore the influence of host and virus biodiversity on emergence and transmission.

Abstract

International audience; Les auteurs estiment le prix d'attributs paysagers dans la ceinture périurbaine de Dijon (France) par la méthode des prix hédonistes avec un modèle économétrique de données de panel appliqué aux ventes de 2 520 maisons. Les paysages tels qu'un observateur les voit depuis le sol sont analysés à partir d'images satellites et d'un modèle numérique de terrain par des méthodes de géographie. Les résultats montrent qu'à proximité immédiate des maisons, les forêts et l'agriculture ont des prix positifs et les routes un prix négatif lorsque ces objets sont vus, alors que leur prix est voisin de zéro lorsqu'ils ne sont pas vus. L'agencement des objets dans des formes paysagères complexes ou fragmentées a un prix hédoniste positif. La soumission à la vue d'autrui depuis d'autres maisons est une nuisance. Enfin, au-delà d'une ou deux centaines de mètres, les paysages et les objets vus ont tous des prix hédonistes proches de zéro.

Abstract

Extracellular matrix alterations have been suggested to be part of the early events occurring in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a disease characterized by formation of renal cysts and progressive renal failure. Here we report that cDNA array analysis identified beta(4) integrin aberrant expression in ADPKD cells. Furthermore, laminin 5 (Ln-5), the main alpha(6)beta(4) integrin ligand, was also found to be abnormally expressed in ADPKD. Studies performed with ADPKD cyst-lining epithelial cells (CC) by comparison with normal tubular cells indicate that integrin alpha(6)beta(4)-Ln-5 interactions are involved in cellular events of potential importance for cystogenesis: 1) laminin 5 is a preferential adhesion substrate for CC, mainly through alpha(6)beta(4) interaction, 2) CC increased haptotactic and chemotactic motility depends on the presence of Ln-5 and requires integrin alpha(3)beta(1) cooperation, and 3) CC haptotactic or chemotactic migration is specifically increased by mAb-mediated beta(4) integrin ligation, through an alpha(3)beta(1) integrin-dependent and independent pathway, respectively.
