This paper presents an efficient way to measure the curing kinetics and gel point, α gel , in epoxy resins from one single experiment. The epoxy curing reaction is herein monitored using in situ and time-resolved near-infrared absorption spectroscopy (NIR). The curing profiles over different isothermal conditions are in good agreement with DSC. Furthermore, the increase of the NIR absorption bands of aromatic rings (unreactive throughout curing) probe the cure shrinkage, as more and more aromatic rings are localized within the fixed sample volume. Therefore, the gel point is determined using the onset of the aromatic absorption increase. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical gel point, as well as DMA results. This innovative approach enables gelation measurements on epoxy neat resins and film composites with an easy-to-perform, accurate, robust, and versatile method.

Characterized primarily by a low body-mass index, anorexia nervosa is a complex and serious illness 1 , affecting 0.9-4% of women and 0.3% of men 2-4 , with twin-based heritability estimates of 50-60% 5 . Mortality rates are higher than those in other psychiatric disorders 6 , and outcomes are unacceptably poor 7 . Here we combine data from the Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI) 8,9 and the Eating Disorders Working Group of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC-ED) and conduct a genome-wide association study of 16,992 cases of anorexia nervosa and 55,525 controls, identifying eight significant loci. The genetic architecture of anorexia nervosa mirrors its clinical presentation, showing significant genetic correlations with psychiatric disorders, physical activity, and metabolic (including glycemic), lipid and anthropometric traits, independent of the effects of common variants associated with body-mass index. These results further encourage a reconceptualization of anorexia nervosa as a metabo-psychiatric disorder. Elucidating the metabolic component is a critical direction for future research, and paying attention to both psychiatric and metabolic components may be key to improving outcomes.

Supercapacitors are perfect energy storage devices; they can be charged almost instantly and release energy over a long period. Another advantage of using supercapacitors is their multipletimes chargeable behavior with minimum degradation in performance. Herein, we report the nanoporous activated carbon based modified electrodes prepared by using phosphoric acid (PA) activation method at different temperatures (600, 700, 800, and 900 °C) using bio-waste precursor, Tamarindus indica ( T. indica ) fruit shell. Because of their excellent energy storage capacity, in the present work, supercapacitive behavior of the nanoporous activated carbon based modified electrode has been demonstrated and hence the electrochemical properties of the developed supercapacitor electrodes are analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cycling studies using 1 M KOH as the electrolyte. The developed supercapacitor nanoporous activated carbon materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, functional group analysis, surface area and morphological studies.

Introduction: Considering the progressive nature of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), it is important to determine whether tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) inhibitors have an effect on early inflammatory and structural lesions detected using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Methods: A search of MEDLINE/PubMed for full-text, English-language articles on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of adalimumab, certolizumab, etanercept, golimumab, or infliximab published since January 2007 was conducted in February 2018 and again in December 2018. The collected articles reported on inflammatory or fatty lesion progression in the spine or sacroiliac joint (SIJ), determined using MRI, in a population that included at least 40% of patients with early axSpA, defined as non-radiographic axSpA., Results: Of the 105 articles retrieved, 19 were included in this review, of which the majority were on etanercept (n = 11). A majority of selected articles included information on inflammatory lesions (SIJ 15/19; spine 12/19). All five TNFα inhibitors showed benefits on inflammation, assessed by MRI, in patients with early axSpA for up to 204 weeks of treatment. Structural progression in SIJ and the spine was assessed in 6/19 and 3/19 articles, respectively, with mixed evidence on benefits of TNF-inhibitor treatment., Conclusions: In conclusion, treatment with TNFα inhibitors reduces MRI-evident inflammatory lesions in the SIJ and spine of patients with early axSpA for up to 4 years. There is less evidence of benefits on structural lesions. Additional studies are required to determine whether TNFα-inhibitor therapy can limit or delay radiological progression in patients with early axSpA., Funding: Pfizer.

Annealing strategies for the citrate complexation-combustion method have been explored as a simple approach for improving the catalytic activity of mixed Cr-Mn oxides for the NH 3 -selective catalytic reduction of NO x . Materials prepared at 300 and 400 °C possess largely amorphous structures, consistent with highly dispersed Cr/Mn components. Annealing at 300 °C for 10 h facilitates the formation of catalysts possessing the largest surface area, reducibility, acidity, and activity window (92-239 °C), while areal activity is measured at 3.8 nmol s -1 m -2 and is comparable to values obtained for materials prepared at 400 °C. Conversely, shorter annealing times of 1 and 5 h at 300 °C produce materials that transform NO x about 2-3 times faster at equivalent surface area. Characterization demonstrates that simple annealing strategies have significant impact on the physiochemical and textural properties of these materials. Moreover, reducibility, O α species, and acidity were correlated against areal activity, but only the latter exhibited a near-linear correlation, indicating its dominance in controlling surface reaction rates., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Background: Gait speed and cognitive performance tend to decline with age. A better understanding of the dynamics of the association between gait speed and cognitive status may identify preclinical markers and improve diagnostic assessments. The objective was to quantify the association between gait speed and cognitive status in later life., Methods: A systematic search was undertaken of relevant databases for original articles published prior to June 2017, measuring the association between gait speed and cognition cross-sectionally or longitudinally among the community-dwelling population. A meta-analysis pooled results of the mean difference between concurrent measures of gait speed in the normal cognition group compared to non-normal cognition groups., Results: Thirty-six studies were selected, providing data from 29,520 participants. The majority of studies reported a significant association between slower gait speed and worse cognitive function in older people. Results of the meta-analysis of 27 studies showed that, compared to normal controls, clinically meaningful reductions in gait speed ranged from 0.11 m/s in those with cognitive impairment, to 0.20 m/s in those with mild dementia, and to 0.41 m/s in those with moderate dementia., Conclusion: The strength of evidence for an association between gait speed and cognition was demonstrated by the number and consistency of results, as well as quality of the studies. Cobalt oxide nanorods were successfully synthesized by a hot plate combustion method using the plant extract of Vitis vinifera . The plant extract as an alternative to toxic chemicals can be used generally as reducing and capping agents. The obtained nanorods were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman, TEM, SAED, EDX, DRS, PL and VSM techniques for the structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. The XRD, FT-IR, Raman, EDX analysis confirmed the high purity of the sample. The TEM and SAED results showed the rod shape morphology of the sample. DRS and PL showed the band gap energy and emission at visible region. VSM showed the antiferromagnetic nature of the sample. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared cobalt oxide nanorods were investigated for the degradation of textile dying waste water. As per the standards of Indian pollution control board for industrial waste water let out into river bodies, the degradation reactions of waste water was found to be 250 mg/L at 150 min. Also, the same catalyst is used for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and it exhibits excellent reduction reaction, because of the high active surface sites. The time taken for the reduction reaction was 300 sec and 210 sec for 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline respectively. Also, the antibacterial activities towards the bacterial strains were studied and reported.

Pure ZnO and dZnO (doped ZnO) systems of type Zn 1- x M x O (M = Co, Cu, Fe and Mn) synthesised by co-precipitation method were evaluated for DSSC studies. Tween-80, a non-ionic surfactant which was used during preparation process also acted as binder for coating the nanoparticles on the FTO glass plate. In order to reduce the band gap, transition metal dopants have been incorporated into ZnO so that it changes the photo electrochemical properties. The conduction band edge minimum (CBM) potentials and valence band edge maximum (VBM) potentials were calculated. The CBM and VBM potentials varied with different dopants. The band gap were engineered such that it shifts the conduction band minimum (CBM) to less negative potential than LUMO (Lower Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) of the dye (Rhodamine B). Pure ZnO showed highest open circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 631.7 mV and short-circuit current density ( J sc ) of 3.5031 μ A/cm². In case of dZnO, 5% doping showed highest short-circuit current density and highest power conversion efficiency for all dopants (Co, Cu, Fe and Mn). Nanoparticles with remarkable morphologies influence the efficiency of dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The DSSC parameters such as open circuit voltage ( V oc ), short-circuit current density ( J sc ), Fill factor (FF) and photovoltaic efficiency ( η ) was calculated. The effect and variation of CBM and VBM in DSSC parameter are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Young adults are often reluctant to seek medical attention. Compared with full-term controls, very low birthweight (<1500 g; VLBW) young adults may have more health problems. AIM To assess the frequency of unrecognised or unmet physical health needs during a comprehensive health and welfare assessment of a national cohort of VLBW adults born in 1986 compared with full-term controls. METHODS The VLBW cohort (n = 229; 71% of those alive) and controls (n = 100) aged 27-29 years were assessed in one University Hospital over 2 days. Physical health assessments included growth, respiratory function, blood pressure, echocardiogram, renal function, blood tests and an interview. Cranial MRI scans were performed on 150 VLBW adults and 50 controls. Significant unrecognised or unmet health needs were defined as including a body mass index (BMI) >30 plus raised fasting insulin >80 pmol/L; any two of moderate respiratory obstruction, or reduced diffusing capacity, or being a regular smoker; cardiovascular: hypertension or abnormal echocardiogram. RESULTS Among the VLBW cohort and controls; 61% versus 73% (P < 0.05) rated their overall health as very good or excellent. A general practitioner (GP) referral letter was sent for 44% VLBW adults and 38% controls, concerning metabolic problems in 20% and 17% respectively; respiratory problems in 12% and 4% (P < 0.05) respectively; cardiovascular problems in 14% and 12% respectively; abnormal renal function in 7% in both groups; and anaemia in 3% and 5% respectively. DISCUSSION Unrecognised or unmet health needs were frequent in both VLBW young adults and controls. Respiratory problems and hypertension were more frequent in the former. Continuity of care is important for VLBW adults who require a regular GP. GPs should routinely ask about gestation and birthweight and VLBW graduates should volunteer this information.

Aims: To determine the extent to which the transition to parenthood protects against heavy and problematic alcohol consumption in young men and women., Design: Integrated participant-level data analysis from three population-based prospective Australasian cohort studies., Setting: General community; participants from the Australian Temperament Study, the Christchurch Health and Development Study, and the Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study., Measurements: Recent binge drinking, alcohol abuse/dependence and number of standard drinks consumed per occasion., Findings: 4015 participants (2151 females; 54%) were assessed on four occasions between ages 21 and 35. Compared to women with children aged <12 months, women who had not transitioned to parenthood were more likely to meet the criteria for alcohol abuse/dependence (fully adjusted risk ratio [RR] 3.5; 95% CI 1.5-7.9) and to report recent binge drinking (RR 3.0; 95% CI 2.1-4.3). The proportion of women meeting the criteria for alcohol abuse/dependence and/or binge drinking increased with the age of participants' youngest child, as did the mean number of standard drinks consumed on each occasion (1.8 if the youngest child was <1 year of age vs. 3.6 for 5+ years of age). Associations between parenthood and male drinking behaviour were considerably weaker., Conclusions: For most women in their twenties and thirties, parenting a child <1 year of age was associated with reduced alcohol consumption. However, this protective effect diminished after 12 months with drinking levels close to pre-parenthood levels after five years. Objective: To assess the physical well-being and components of the metabolic syndrome in a national cohort of very low birth weight (VLBW) young adults and same age controls., Study Design: The New Zealand VLBW Study cohort prospectively included all infants with birth weight <1500 g born in 1986, with 338 (82%) surviving to discharge home. Height and weight were measured at age 7-8 years. The VLBW cohort (n = 229; 71% alive) and term-born controls (n = 100) aged 27-29 years were clinically assessed in a single center over 2 days, including assessment for components of the metabolic syndrome., Results: Compared with controls, both male and female VLBW adults were significantly shorter (P < .001), but only females were lighter (P < .001) and had lower mean body mass index (P = .044), fat mass, and body fat percentage. Males, but not females, had significantly higher systolic blood pressure (P = .028), but there were no significant differences in other components of the metabolic syndrome. There was no difference in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in VLBW adults compared with controls (males, 22.2% vs 11.1%; P = .15: females, 12.8% vs 13.1%; P = .95). Examining the VLBW cohort with logistic regression, male sex, gestational age <28 weeks, Māori/Pacific Island ethnicity, and body mass index >90th percentile at age 7-8 years were significant predictors for the metabolic syndrome at age 27-29 years, with ORs of 2-4., Conclusions: Systolic blood pressure in males was the only component of the metabolic syndrome that was significantly elevated in VLBW adults compared with controls. Background: The extent to which exposure to childhood sexual and physical abuse increases the risk of psychotic experiences in adulthood is currently unclear.AimsTo examine the relationship between childhood sexual and physical abuse and psychotic experiences in adulthood taking into account potential confounding and time-dynamic covariate factors., Method: Data were from a cohort of 1265 participants studied from birth to 35 years. At ages 18 and 21, cohort members were questioned about childhood sexual and physical abuse. At ages 30 and 35, they were questioned about psychotic experiences (symptoms of abnormal thought and perception). Generalised estimating equation models investigated covariation of the association between abuse exposure and psychotic experiences including potential confounding factors in childhood (socioeconomic disadvantage, adverse family functioning) and time-dynamic covariate factors (mental health, substance use and life stress)., Results: Data were available for 962 participants; 6.3% had been exposed to severe sexual abuse and 6.4% to severe physical abuse in childhood. After adjustment for confounding and time-dynamic covariate factors, those exposed to severe sexual abuse had rates of abnormal thought and abnormal perception symptoms that were 2.25 and 4.08 times higher, respectively than the 'no exposure' group. There were no significant associations between exposure to severe physical abuse and psychotic experiences., Conclusions: Findings indicate that exposure to severe childhood sexual (but not physical) abuse is independently associated with an increased risk of psychotic experiences in adulthood (particularly symptoms of abnormal perception) and this association could not be fully accounted for by confounding or time-dynamic covariate factors.Declaration of interestNone.

La₂CuO₄ (LCO) perovskite nanoparticle was synthesized by microwave assisted combustion method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), respectively. The XRD confirmed the formation of a single orthorhombic phase. The average crystallite size of LCO samples were 39.6 nm and 46.4 nm. This LCO perovskite nanoparticle was evaluated for the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde in liquid phase batch reactor at atmospheric conditions. The conversions were studied by using different solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetonitrile, n -hexane, and temperature varying from 60 °C to 90 °C and reaction time from 1 to 4 h duration. 50 mg of catalyst, 50 mmol of DMSO, 50 mmol of methanol, temperature at 70 °C and 4 h duration was the optimized condition to achieve 100% methanol conversion and 98% selectivity of formaldehyde. The reaction pathway of methanol to formaldehyde conversion is discussed.

Diurnal p CO 2 fluctuations have the potential to modulate the biological impact of ocean acidification (OA) on reef calcifiers, yet little is known about the physiological and biochemical responses of scleractinian corals to fluctuating carbonate chemistry under OA. Here, we exposed newly settled Pocillopora damicornis for 7 days to ambient p CO 2 , steady and elevated p CO 2 (stable OA) and diurnally fluctuating p CO 2 under future OA scenario (fluctuating OA). We measured the photo-physiology, growth (lateral growth, budding and calcification), oxidative stress and activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA), Ca-ATPase and Mg-ATPase. Results showed that while OA enhanced the photochemical performance of in hospite symbionts, it also increased catalase activity and lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, both OA treatments altered the activities of host and symbiont CA, suggesting functional changes in the uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) for photosynthesis and calcification. Most importantly, only the fluctuating OA treatment resulted in a slight drop in calcification with concurrent up-regulation of Ca-ATPase and Mg-ATPase, implying increased energy expenditure on calcification. Consequently, asexual budding rates decreased by 50% under fluctuating OA. These results suggest that diel p CO 2 oscillations could modify the physiological responses and potentially alter the energy budget of coral recruits under future OA, and that fluctuating OA is more energetically expensive for the maintenance of coral recruits than stable OA.

This study examined the long-term effects of being born very-low-birth-weight (VLBW, <1500 g) on adult cerebral structural development using a multi-method neuroimaging approach. The New Zealand VLBW study cohort comprised 413 individuals born VLBW in 1986. Of the 338 who survived to discharge, 229 were assessed at age 27-29 years. Of these, 150 had a 3 T MRI scan alongside 50 healthy term-born controls. The VLBW group included 53/57 participants born <28 weeks gestation. MRI analyses included: a) structural MRI to assess grey matter (GM) volume and cortical thickness; b) arterial spin labelling (ASL) to quantify GM perfusion; and c) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to measure white matter (WM) integrity. Compared to controls, VLBW adults had smaller GM volumes within frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital cortices, bilateral cingulate gyri and left caudate, as well as greater GM volumes in frontal, temporal and occipital areas. Thinner cortex was observed within frontal, temporal and parietal cortices. VLBW adults also had less GM perfusion within limited temporal areas, bilateral hippocampi and thalami. Finally, lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and axial diffusivity (AD) within principal WM tracts was observed in VLBW subjects. Within the VLBW group, birthweight was positively correlated with GM volume and perfusion in cortical and subcortical regions, as well as FA and AD across numerous principal WM tracts. Between group differences within temporal cortices were evident across all imaging modalities, suggesting that the temporal lobe may be particularly susceptible to disruption in development following preterm birth. Overall, findings reveal enduring and pervasive effects of preterm birth on brain structural development, with individuals born at lower birthweights having greater long-term neuropathology., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. The endocannabinoid system is an increasingly recognised pharmacological target for treating stress and anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recent preclinical developments have implicated the endocannabinoid system in stress responses, emotional memories and fear extinction, all critical to PTSD aetiology. However, preclinical research in endocannabinoid biology has neglected the influential role of sex hormone differences on PTSD symptomology, which is particularly important given that PTSD is twice as common in women as in men. In this review, we compile and consider the evidence that the endocannabinoid system is influenced by ovarian hormones, with application to stress disorders such as PTSD. It is clear that therapeutic modulation of the endocannabinoid system needs to be approached with awareness of ovarian hormonal influences, and knowledge of these influences may enhance treatment outcomes for female PTSD populations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Genetic factors contribute to anorexia nervosa (AN); and the first genome-wide significant locus has been identified. We describe methods and procedures for the Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI), an international collaboration designed to rapidly recruit 13,000 individuals with AN and ancestrally matched controls. We present sample characteristics and the utility of an online eating disorder diagnostic questionnaire suitable for large-scale genetic and population research., Methods: ANGI recruited from the United States (US), Australia/New Zealand (ANZ), Sweden (SE), and Denmark (DK). Recruitment was via national registers (SE, DK); treatment centers (US, ANZ, SE, DK); and social and traditional media (US, ANZ, SE). All cases had a lifetime AN diagnosis based on DSM-IV or ICD-10 criteria (excluding amenorrhea). Recruited controls had no lifetime history of disordered eating behaviors. To assess the positive and negative predictive validity of the online eating disorder questionnaire (ED100K-v1), 109 women also completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID), Module H., Results: Blood samples and clinical information were collected from 13,363 individuals with lifetime AN and from controls. Online diagnostic phenotyping was effective and efficient; the validity of the questionnaire was acceptable., Conclusions: Our multi-pronged recruitment approach was highly effective for rapid recruitment and can be used as a model for efforts by other groups. High online presence of individuals with AN rendered the Internet/social media a remarkably effective recruitment tool in some countries. Background and Aims: Studies have linked adolescent alcohol use with adverse consequences in adulthood, yet it is unclear how strong the associations are and to what extent they may be due to confounding. Our aim was to estimate the strength of association between different patterns of adolescent drinking and longer-term psychosocial harms taking into account individual, family and peer factors., Design: Participant-level data were integrated from four long-running longitudinal studies: Australian Temperament Project, Christchurch Health and Development Study, Mater Hospital and University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy and Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study., Setting: Australia and New Zealand., Participants: Participants were assessed on multiple occasions between ages 13 and 30 years (from 1991 to 2012). Number of participants varied (up to n = 9453) by analysis., Measurements: Three patterns of alcohol use (frequent, heavy episodic and problem drinking) were assessed prior to age 17. Thirty outcomes were assessed to age 30 spanning substance use and related problems, antisocial behaviour, sexual risk-taking, accidents, socio-economic functioning, mental health and partner relationships., Findings: After covariate adjustment, weekly drinking prior to age 17 was associated with a two- to threefold increase in the odds of binge drinking [odds ratio (OR) = 2.14; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.57-2.90], drink driving (OR = 2.78; 95% CI = 1.84-4.19), alcohol-related problems (OR = 3.04; 95% CI = 1.90-4.84) and alcohol dependence (OR = 3.30; 95% CI = 1.69-6.47) in adulthood. Frequency of drinking accounted for a greater proportion of the rate of most adverse outcomes than the other measures of alcohol use. Associations between frequent, heavy episodic and problem drinking in adolescence and most non-alcohol outcomes were largely explained by shared risk factors for adolescent alcohol use and poor psychosocial functioning., Conclusions: Frequency of adolescent drinking predicts substance use problems in adulthood as much as, and possibly more than, heavy episodic and problem drinking independent of individual, family and peer predictors of those outcomes., (© 2018 Society for the Study of Addiction.)

GABAergic interneurons in the hippocampus are critically involved in almost all hippocampal circuit functions including coordinated network activity. Somatostatin-expressing oriens-lacunosum moleculare (O-LM) interneurons are a major subtype of dendritically projecting interneurons in hippocampal subregions (e.g., CA1), and express group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), specifically mGluR 1 and mGluR 5 . Group I mGluRs are thought to regulate hippocampal circuit functions partially through GABAergic interneurons. Previous studies suggest that a group I/II mGluR agonist produces slow supra-threshold membrane oscillations (<0.1 Hz), which are associated with high-frequency action potential (AP) discharges in O-LM interneurons. However, the properties and underlying mechanisms of these slow oscillations remain largely unknown. We performed whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from mouse interneurons in the stratum oriens/alveus (O/A interneurons) including CA1 O-LM interneurons. Our study revealed that the selective mGluR 1/5 agonist (S)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) induced slow membrane oscillations (<0.1 Hz), which were associated with gamma frequency APs followed by AP-free perithreshold gamma oscillations. The selective mGluR 1 antagonist (S)-(+)-α-Amino-4-carboxy-2-methylbenzeneacetic acid (LY367385) reduced the slow oscillations, and the selective mGluR 5 antagonist 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine hydrochloride (MPEP) partially blocked them. Blockade of nonselective cation-conducting transient receptor potential channels, L-type Ca 2+ channels, or ryanodine receptors all abolished the slow oscillations, suggesting the involvement of multiple mechanisms. Our findings suggest that group I mGluR activation in O/A interneurons may play an important role in coordinated network activity, and O/A interneuron vulnerability to excitotoxicity, in disease states like seizures, is at least in part due to an excessive rise in intracellular Ca 2+ ., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Hierarchical ordered ZSM-5 zeolites were successfully synthesized by a template-free hydrothermal treatment using rice joints ash as the source of silica. The formation of hierarchical ordered ZSM-5 zeolites and its physicochemical properties were investigated systematically. The mineralogical phases, morphology, surface area and porosity, acidity and thermal stability of the synthesized hierarchical materials were investigated using XRD, FT-IR, HR-SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption (BET) analysis, NH3-TPD and TGA/DTA analysis. The excellent catalytic activity of hierarchical ordered ZSM-5 zeolites (150 °C) was revealed in the selective oxidation of toluene to the corresponding benzaldehyde with 82% conversion and 94% selectivity. The material was evaluated for the oxidation of toluene in the presence of H2O2 as the oxidizing agent and 1,4-dioxane solvent. The obtained results noted that the material was highly active, stable and can be recycled at least four times without a loss of catalytic efficiency. The crystallization was carried out in an autoclave for 5 days maintained at a temperature of 150 °C for the transformation of RJA into hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite structure as well as to achieve high crystallinity.

Objective: There are few data on visual outcomes in adulthood of former very low birthweight (VLBW; <1500 g) infants. We aimed to assess vision at 27-29 years in a national cohort of VLBW infants born in 1986 and assessed for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) when no treatment was available, compared with term born controls., Methods: The cohort and controls attended a 2-day assessment in Christchurch as part of a larger study. Visual assessment included glasses prescription measured by focimeter, logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) distance visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity, autorefraction, retinal photographs and a questionnaire on vision-related everyday activities. Rates of reduced VA and myopia in the VLBW cohort at 27-29 were compared with the results of vision testing at 7-8 years., Results: 250 VLBW adults (77% those alive) gave study consent and 229 (45 with a history of ROP) were assessed in Christchurch, plus 100 term born controls. VLBW adults with ROP had reduced VA compared with no ROP and controls (mean logMAR score (SD); 0.003 (0.19), -0.021 (0.16), -0.078 (0.09), P=0.001). There were no differences in myopia (>2 D) between the groups but high myopia (>5 D) was confined to those with ROP. VLBW adults with ROP drove a car less often and had higher difficulties with everyday activities scores due to eyesight. Aim: Angina pectoris continues to affect multitudes of people around the world. In this study the management of stable angina pectoris in private healthcare settings in South Africa (SA) was investigated. In particular, we reviewed the frequency of medical versus surgical interventions when used as first-line therapy., Methods: This was a retrospective inferential study carried out using records of patients in private healthcare settings. All cases that were authorised for reimbursement by medical aid schemes for revascularisation between 2009 and 2014 were retrieved and a database was created. Data were analysed using Microsoft ® Excel and GraphPad Prism ® version 5. The differences (where applicable) were considered statistically significant if the p -value was ≤ 0.05., Results: Nine hundred and twenty-two patients, consisting of 585 males (average age 64.7 years; SD 12.9) and 337 females (average age 65.5 years; SD 14.3), met the inclusion criteria. One hundred and seventy-eighty or 54%, 156 (43%) and 86 (63%) patients with hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes, respectively, were treated with surgery only. For these patients, percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) were significantly ( p < 0.0001) preferred first-line interventions over optimal medical therapy (OMT). Four hundred and thirty-six or 47% of all patients studied were managed with surgery only, while only 25% (227) were managed with OMT. It took 60 months (five years) for patients who were treated with OMT before their first surgical intervention(s) to require the second revascularisation. About 71% of patients who received medical therapy were placed on only one drug, the so called sub-optimal medical therapy (SOMT)., Conclusions: The management of stable angina pectoris in private healthcare settings in SA is skewed towards surgical interventions as opposed to OMT. This is contrary to what consistent scientific evidence and international treatment guidelines suggest.

Microbial community diversity determines the function of each chamber of multi-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) systems. How the microbial community data can be further used to serve wastewater treatment process modelling and optimization has been rarely studied. In this study, a MBBR system was set up to investigate the microbial community diversity of biofilm in each functional chamber. The compositions of microbial community of biofilm from different chambers of MBBR were quantified by high-throughput sequencing. Significantly higher proportion of autotrophs were found in the second aerobic chamber (15.4%), while 4.3% autotrophs were found in the first aerobic chamber. Autotrophs in anoxic chamber were negligible. Moreover, ratios of active heterotrophic biomass and autotrophic biomass (X H /X A ) were obtained by performing respiration tests. By setting heterotroph/autotroph ratios obtained from sequencing analysis equal to X H /X A , a novel approach for kinetic model parameters estimation was developed. Direct dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene has drawn extensive attention for synthesizing various chemicals. The Mo-based catalysts hold promise as an alternative to the toxic CrO x - and scarce Pt-based catalysts. However, the low activity and rapid deactivation of the Mo-based catalysts greatly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a feasible approach toward the development of efficient and non-noble metal dehydrogenation catalysts based on Mo-C T hybrid nanowires calcined at different temperatures. In particular, the optimal Mo-C 700 catalyst exhibits isobutane consumption rate of 3.9 mmol g -1 h -1 and isobutene selectivity of 73% with production rate of 2.8 mmol g -1 h -1 . The catalyst maintained 90% of its initial activity after 50 h of reaction. Extensive characterizations reveal that such prominent performance is well correlated with the adsorption abilities of isobutane and isobutene and the formation of η-MoC species. In contrast, the generation of β-Mo 2 C crystalline phase during long-term reaction causes minor decline in activity. Compared to MoO 2 and β-Mo 2 C, η-MoC plays a role more likely in suppressing the cracking reaction. This work demonstrates a feasible approach toward the development of efficient and non-noble metal dehydrogenation catalysts.

Nanostructured PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) powder was synthesized at 500 °C-800 °C using sol-gel route. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis confirmed the formation of perovskite structure. The sample heat treated at 800 °C alone showed the formation of morphotropic phase boundary with coexistence of tetragonal and rhombohedral phase. The PZT powder and PVDF were used in 0-3 connectivity to form the PZT/PVDF composite film using solvent casting method. The composite films containing 10%, 50%, 70% and 80% volume fraction of PZT in PVDF were fabricated. The XRD spectra validated that the PZT structure remains unaltered in the composites and was not affected by the presence of PVDF. The scanning electron microscopy images show good degree of dispersion of PZT in PVDF matrix and the formation of pores at higher PZT loading. The quantitative analysis of elements and their composition were confirmed from energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The optical band gap of the PVDF film is 3.3 eV and the band gap decreased with increase in volume fraction of PZT fillers. The FTIR spectra showed the bands corresponding to different phases of PVDF (α, β, γ) and perovskite phase of PZT. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that PZT/PVDF composite films showed better thermal stability than the pure PVDF film and hydrophobicity. The dielectric constant was measured at frequency ranging from 1 Hz to 6 MHz and for temperature ranging from room temperature to 150 °C. The composite with 50% PZT filler loading shows the maximum dielectric constant at the studied frequency and temperature range with flexibility.

Background: TeleMental Health (TMH) is gaining widespread acceptance in the United States., Objective: Summarize current evidence regarding TMH risks and benefits, standards of care, practice guidelines, reimbursement, and interstate practice issues pertinent to psychiatric nurses and consumers., Design: A targeted review of literature, current practice, and TMH websites was generated using the following key search words: clinical outcomes, practice guidelines, regulations, interstate practice, and reimbursement for TMH. A search of government and professional organization websites and a literature review of PubMed and PsychINFO databases was limited to the past 15 years., Results: Studies demonstrate TMH services are equal in efficacy to that provided in face-to-face encounters and preferred by some populations. Current TMH practice guidelines, reimbursement, and regulatory issues are reviewed., Conclusions: Providers, including psychiatric advanced practice registered nurses, can use TMH to effectively address the growing need for mental health services, although regulatory, licensure, and clinical issues must be addressed prior to offering TMH services.

High-protein hypocaloric nutrition, tailored to each patient's muscle mass, protein-catabolic severity, and exogenous energy tolerance, is the most plausible nutrition therapy in protein-catabolic critical illness. Sufficient protein provision could mitigate the rapid muscle atrophy characteristic of this disease while providing urgently needed amino acids to the central protein compartment and sites of tissue injury. The protein dose may range from 1.5 to 2.5 g protein (1.8-3.0 g free amino acids)/kg dry body weight per day. Nutrition should be low in energy (≈70% of energy expenditure or ≈15 kcal/kg dry body weight per day) because efforts to match energy provision to energy expenditure are physiologically irrational, risk toxic energy overfeeding, and have repeatedly failed in large clinical trials to demonstrate clinical benefit. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition currently suggests high-protein hypocaloric nutrition for obese critically ill patients. The investigation of foodborne outbreaks requires a multi-disciplinary set of skills. Frequently, foodborne-related outbreaks are poorly investigated due to lack of all required skills on the part of the investigators. This case study, based on a shellfish poisoning outbreak investigation conducted in Wete, Zanzibar in July 2015 by the Tanzania Field Epidemiology Training Program (TFETP), seeks to reinforce principles and skills in foodborne outbreak investigation. It is primarily intended for training public health practitioners in a classroom setting. Facilitating this case study should take approximately 3 hours.

The hippocampus plays a critical role in learning, memory, and spatial processing through coordinated network activity including theta and gamma oscillations. Recent evidence suggests that hippocampal subregions (e.g., CA1) can generate these oscillations at the network level, at least in part, through GABAergic interneurons. However, it is unclear whether specific GABAergic interneurons generate intrinsic theta and/or gamma oscillations at the single-cell level. Since major types of CA1 interneurons (i.e., parvalbumin-positive basket cells (PVBCs), cannabinoid type 1 receptor-positive basket cells (CB 1 BCs), Schaffer collateral-associated cells (SCAs), neurogliaform cells and ivy cells) are thought to play key roles in network theta and gamma oscillations in the hippocampus, we tested the hypothesis that these cells generate intrinsic perithreshold oscillations at the single-cell level. We performed whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from GABAergic interneurons in the CA1 region of the mouse hippocampus in the presence of synaptic blockers to identify intrinsic perithreshold membrane potential oscillations. The majority of PVBCs (83%), but not the other interneuron subtypes, produced intrinsic perithreshold gamma oscillations if the membrane potential remained above -45 mV. In contrast, CB 1 BCs, SCAs, neurogliaform cells, ivy cells, and the remaining PVBCs (17%) produced intrinsic theta, but not gamma, oscillations. These oscillations were prevented by blockers of persistent sodium current. Background: Intestinal perforation is a serious but poorly understood complication of typhoid fever. This study aims to determine the patient factors associated with postoperative morbidity and mortality., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all children presenting to our unit with typhoid intestinal perforation (TIP) between March 2009 and December 2013. The patients were grouped based on postoperative outcome status and were compared with respect to patient related variables, using chi square test. Multivariate analysis was performed using a binary logistic regression model. Significance was assigned to a p-value <0.05., Results: The records of 129 children were analyzed. There were 78 (60.5%) boys and 51 (39.5%) girls. The male/female ratio was 1.53:1. Their ages ranged from 3years to 13years (mean 8.14years; SD 2.61years). A single intestinal perforation was seen in 73.4% (94/128) of them, while 26.6% (34/128) had two or more. Mortality rate was 10.9%. Multivariate analysis showed that multiple intestinal perforations significantly predicted postoperative mortality (p=0.005) and development of postoperative fecal fistula (p=0.013), while serum albumin <32g/L was a predictor of postoperative surgical site infection (p=0.002)., Conclusion: Multiple intestinal perforations, a postoperative fecal fistula and hypoalbuminemia adversely affected outcome in our patients., Level of Evidence: III (Retrospective study). Aims: The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity has become a key challenge for New Zealand. The purpose of the present study was to examine childhood risk factors for adult adiposity in a longitudinal birth cohort., Methods: Data were gathered from the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS), a birth cohort of 1,265 children born in Christchurch in 1977. Associations were examined between socio-demographic background, perinatal factors, infant and child characteristics, family functioning/child maltreatment and adiposity at ages 30 and 35 years. Adiposity was assessed using body mass index scores., Results: At ages 30 and 35, approximately one-third of cohort members were overweight and one-fifth were obese. Generalised estimating equation models showed that statistically significant (p<.05) predictors of later adiposity and overweight/obesity were: male gender, being born into a single-parent family, having parents with larger body size, higher early infant growth, limited or no breastfeeding, lower levels of cognitive ability and exposure to severe sexual abuse., Conclusions: Overweight and obesity was associated with social and family background, biological endowment, cognitive ability and childhood adversity factors. The Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP), in close partnership with the Canadian Partnership for Quality Radiotherapy (CPQR) has developed a series of Technical Quality Control (TQC) guidelines for radiation treatment equipment. These guidelines outline the performance objectives that equipment should meet in order to ensure an acceptable level of radiation treatment quality. The TQC guidelines have been rigorously reviewed and field tested in a variety of Canadian radiation treatment facilities. The development process enables rapid review and update to keep the guidelines current with changes in technology. This announcement provides an introduction to the guidelines, describing their scope and how they should be interpreted. Background: In community studies, plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is positively associated with cardiovascular disorders. Those born with very low birth weight (VLBW) have increased risk of metabolic and vascular disorders in later life, but plasma concentrations of natriuretic peptides have not been studied. The objectives here were to evaluate BNP and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP)-a putative marker of vascular risk-in young adults born with VLBW., Methods: In all, 220 VLBW cases and 97 matched controls were studied 28 years after birth during a 2-day period at 1 research center. Aminoterminal (NT) products (NTproBNP, NTproCNP) and a range of conventional vascular risk factors including echocardiographic indices were measured along with genetic polymorphisms known to increase plasma NTproBNP., Results: VLBW individuals were smaller, had smaller hearts, reduced stroke volume and endothelial function, and higher systolic blood pressure and arterial elastance. Of the many humoral vascular and metabolic risk factors measured, including NTproBNP, only plasma NTproCNP (higher in VLBW individuals) differed significantly. Across all individuals, associations of NTproCNP with each of 7 conventional risk factors, as well as with arterial elastance, were positive, whereas associations of NTproBNP with risk were all inverse. In multivariate analysis, the genetic variant rs198358 was independently associated with NTproBNP., Conclusions: In young adults at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, higher NTproCNP likely reflects a compensatory vascular response to vascular stress, whereas the negative link with NTproBNP likely reflects beneficial genetic mutations. In 2015, a cholera epidemic occurred in Tanzania; most cases and deaths occurred in Dar es Salaam early in the outbreak. We evaluated cholera mortality through passive surveillance, burial permits, and interviews conducted with decedents' caretakers. Active case finding identified 101 suspected cholera deaths. Routine surveillance had captured only 48 (48%) of all cholera deaths, and burial permit assessments captured the remainder. We interviewed caregivers of 56 decedents to assess cholera management behaviors. Of 51 decedents receiving home care, 5 (10%) used oral rehydration solution after becoming ill. Caregivers reported that 51 (93%) of 55 decedents with known time of death sought care before death; 16 (29%) of 55 delayed seeking care for >6 h. Of the 33 (59%) community decedents, 20 (61%) were said to have been discharged from a health facility before death. Appropriate and early management of cholera cases can reduce the number of cholera deaths.

Objective: To investigate the concordance between medically documented childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) and recall of same by adults aged 35 years., Participants: A total of 962 birth cohort members from the Christchurch Health and Development Study available at the 35-year follow-up., Main Measures: Childhood TBI information prospectively collected yearly over ages 0 to 15 years as part of the Christchurch Health and Development Study. At age 35 years, cohort members were administered the Ohio State University TBI Identification Method (OSU TBI-ID) to elicit recall of TBIs with loss of consciousness (LOC)., Results: Ninety-four individuals reported 116 TBI events. Twenty-five TBI events resulting in LOC, 17 (68%) were recalled (true positives) and 8 (32%) were not recalled (false negatives). LOC was incorrectly recalled for 56 events (false positives), but 868 individuals correctly recalled no TBI event (no LOC). A further 35 events were (correctly) recalled for which a TBI had been recorded but no LOC (true negatives; 91.8%)., Implications: We evaluated the utility of the OSU TBI-ID to identify adult recall of childhood TBI with LOC occurring 19 to 35 years earlier. Most of the cohort accurately reported whether or not they had experienced a medically attended TBI with LOC, indicating that a positive result from the OSU TBI-ID provides useful screening information.

Background and Aims: There has been a great deal of evidence showing that high novelty seeking (NS) is a risk factor for the development of substance use disorders (SUDs). However, the possible causal role of NS in SUDs is unconfirmed. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between NS at age 16 and SUDs from ages 18 to 35 years, net of a series of covariate factors., Design: Longitudinal study of a birth cohort., Setting: Christchurch, New Zealand., Participants: General community sample with sample sizes ranging from n = 1011 (age 21) to n = 962 (age 35)., Measurements: The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to derive DSM-IV diagnoses of alcohol, nicotine, cannabis and other illicit SUDs at four time intervals from ages 18 to 35. NS was measured at age 16 using the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire., Findings: An increase in NS was associated with increases in the prevalence of all four SUDs at age 18-35. Following adjustment for a broad range of covariate factors, estimated effect sizes (odds ratios) were reducing in magnitude, but remained moderate to large. Adjusted odds ratios of SUDs for the highest NS quartile compared to with the lowest were 2.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.5, 2.7] for alcohol; 1.8 (95% CI = 1.3, 2.7) for nicotine; 3.6 (95% CI = 2.4, 5.6) for cannabis and 5.1 (95% CI = 2.9, 9.2) for other illicit substances., Conclusions: The association between high novelty seeking and substance use disorders is not explained by common underlying individual factors and environmental exposures. High-quality historical data about US Congressional elections has long provided common ground for electoral studies. However, advances in geographic information science have recently made it efficient to compile, distribute, and analyze large spatio-temporal data sets on the structure of US Congressional districts. A single spatio-temporal data set that relates US Congressional election results to the spatial extent of the constituencies has not yet been developed. To address this, existing high-quality data sets of elections returns were combined with a spatiotemporal data set on Congressional district boundaries to generate a new spatio-temporal database of US Congressional election results that are explicitly linked to the geospatial data about the districts themselves.

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) reported that common variation in the human Niemann-Pick C1 gene ( NPC1 ) is associated with morbid adult obesity. This study was confirmed using our BALB/cJ Npc1 mouse model, whereby heterozygous mice ( Npc1 +/- ) with decreased gene dosage were susceptible to weight gain when fed a high-fat diet (HFD) compared with homozygous normal mice ( Npc1 +/+ ) fed the same diet. The objective for our current study was to validate this Npc1 gene-diet interaction using statistical modeling with fitted growth trajectories, conduct body weight analyses for different measures, and define the physiological basis responsible for weight gain. Metabolic phenotype analysis indicated no significant difference between Npc1 +/+ and Npc1 +/- mice fed a HFD for food and water intake, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, locomotor activity, adaptive thermogenesis, and intestinal lipid absorption. However, the livers from Npc1 +/- mice had significantly increased amounts of mature sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) and increased expression of SREBP-1 target genes that regulate glycolysis and lipogenesis with an accumulation of triacylglycerol and cholesterol. Moreover, white adipose tissue from Npc1 +/- mice had significantly decreased amounts of phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase with decreased triacylglycerol lipolysis. Consistent with these results, cellular energy metabolism studies indicated that Npc1 +/- fibroblasts had significantly increased glycolysis and lipogenesis, in addition to significantly decreased substrate (glucose and endogenous fatty acid) oxidative metabolism with an accumulation of triacylglycerol and cholesterol. In conclusion, these studies demonstrate that the Npc1 gene interacts with a HFD to promote weight gain through differential regulation of central energy metabolism pathways., (Copyright © 2017 the American Physiological Society.)

Objective: Few studies have examined the contribution of specific disaster-related experiences to symptoms of depression. The aims of this study were to do this by examining the roles of peri-traumatic stress and distress due to lingering disaster-related disruption in explaining linkages between disaster exposure and major depressive disorder symptoms among a cohort exposed to the 2010-2011 Canterbury (New Zealand) earthquakes., Methods: Structural equation models were fitted to data obtained from the Christchurch Health and Development Study at age 35 ( n = 495), 20-24 months following the onset of the disaster. Measures included earthquake exposure, peri-traumatic stress, disruption distress and symptoms of major depressive disorder., Results: The associations between earthquake exposure and major depression were explained largely by the experience of peri-traumatic stress during the earthquakes (β = 0.180, p < 0.01) and not by disruption distress following the earthquakes (β = 0.048, p = 0.47)., Conclusion: The results suggest that peri-traumatic stress has been under-recognised as a predictor of major depressive disorder.

Background: Childhood mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been associated with negative adult outcomes. Effective interventions require identification of the injury event. There is currently little information regarding the accuracy of adult recall of childhood mTBI., Method: Prospectively collected information from a large birth cohort was used to examine adult recall accuracy at age 25 for 161 childhood mTBI events occurring before age 10., Results: At age 25 cohort members recalled 11 outpatient injuries and 16 inpatient injuries. Recall accuracy increased with age. Logistic regression analysis distinguished between respondents who reported and did not report a childhood mTBI event correctly classifying 84.5% of cases. Age at injury, injury severity and loss of consciousness (LoC) made a unique statistically significant contribution to the model., Conclusions: Most childhood mTBI events are not recalled in adulthood. Age at injury, injury severity and LoC significantly increase likelihood of recall and should be used in measures that evaluate whether injury has occurred. Implications for rehabilitation Traumatic brain injury occurs frequently and often results in ongoing deficits in attention, concentration, executive function and later mental health problems. Identification of a history of traumatic brain injury is essential to ensure that appropriate rehabilitative input is provided. Rehabilitation professionals need to be aware that mental health problems may be secondary to a prior traumatic brain injury. It is important for rehabilitation professionals elicit an accurate history of traumatic brain injury to ensure that their treatment plans are tailored to the needs of this group.

A new species of nemertean worm belonging to the genus Carcinonemertes is described from egg masses of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys, Florida, USA. This is the first species of Carcinonemertes reported to infect P. argus or any other lobster species in the greater Caribbean and western Atlantic Ocean. Carcinonemertes conanobrieni sp. nov. varies in body color from a translucent white to a pale orange, with males ranging in total body length from 2.35 to 12.71 mm and females ranging from 0.292 to 16.73 mm. Among the traits that separate this new species from previously described species in the genus Carcinonemertes are a relatively wide stylet basis, minimal sexual size dimorphism, and a unique mucus sheath decorated with external hooks. Also, juvenile worms were found to encyst themselves next to lobster embryos and female worms lay both long strings of eggs wound throughout the lobster's setae as well as spherical cases that are attached to lobster embryos. The stylet length and stylet basis remain unchanged throughout ontogeny for both male and female worms. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses separated this newly described species from all other species of Carcinonemertes with available COI sequences. Carcinonemertes spp. are voracious egg predators and have been tied to the collapse of various crustacean fisheries. The formal description of this new species represents the first step to understand putative impacts of this worm on the population health of one of the most lucrative yet already depressed crustacean fisheries.

The precise value of the normal adult protein requirement has long been debated. For many reasons-one of them being the difficulty of carrying out long-term nutrition experiments in free-living people-uncertainty is likely to persist indefinitely. By contrast, the controlled environment of the intensive care unit and relatively short trajectory of many critical illnesses make it feasible to use hard clinical outcome trials to determine protein requirements for critically ill patients in well-defined clinical situations. This article suggests how the physiological principles that underlie our understanding of normal protein requirements can be incorporated into the design of such clinical trials. The main focus is on 3 principles: (1) the rate of body nitrogen loss roughly predicts an individual's minimum protein requirement and is thus essential to measure to identify individual patients and clinical situations in which the minimum protein requirement is importantly increased, (2) existing muscle mass sets an upper limit on the rate at which amino acids can be mobilized from muscle for transfer to central proteins and sites of injury and is thus important to monitor to identify patients who are at greatest risk of protein deficiency-related adverse outcomes, and (3) negative energy balance increases the dietary protein requirement, so calorie-deprived patients-whether obese or not-should be enrolled in hard clinical outcome trials that compare the current practice of "permissive underfeeding" (underprovision of all nutrients, including protein) with hypocaloric nutrition supplemented by a suitably generous amount of protein.

The International Protein Summit in 2016 brought experts in clinical nutrition and protein metabolism together from around the globe to determine the impact of high-dose protein administration on clinical outcomes and address barriers to its delivery in the critically ill patient. It has been suggested that high doses of protein in the range of 1.2-2.5 g/kg/d may be required in the setting of the intensive care unit (ICU) to optimize nutrition therapy and reduce mortality. While incapable of blunting the catabolic response, protein doses in this range may be needed to best stimulate new protein synthesis and preserve muscle mass. Quality of protein (determined by source, content and ratio of amino acids, and digestibility) affects nutrient sensing pathways such as the mammalian target of rapamycin. Achieving protein goals the first week following admission to the ICU should take precedence over meeting energy goals. High-protein hypocaloric (providing 80%-90% of caloric requirements) feeding may evolve as the best strategy during the initial phase of critical illness to avoid overfeeding, improve insulin sensitivity, and maintain body protein homeostasis, especially in the patient at high nutrition risk. This article provides a set of recommendations based on assessment of the current literature to guide healthcare professionals in clinical practice at this time, as well as a list of potential topics to guide investigators for purposes of research in the future.

In the present study, first time we report the microwave-assisted green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Tamarindus indica natural fruit extract. The plant extract plays a dual role of reducing and capping agent for the synthesis of AgNPs. The formation of spherical shape AgNPs is confirmed by XRD, HR-SEM, and HR-TEM. The presence of face-centered cubic (FCC) silver is confirmed by XRD studies and the average crystallite size of AgNPs is calculated to be around 6-8nm. The average particle diameter is found to be around 10nm, which is identified from HR-TEM images. The purity of AgNPs is confirmed by EDX analysis. The presence of sigmoid curve in UV-Visible absorption spectra suggests that the reaction has complicated kinetic features. To investigate the functional groups of the extract and their involvement in the reduction of AgNO 3 to form AgNPs, FT-IR studies are carried out. The redox peaks are observed in cyclic voltammetry in the potential range of -1.2 to +1.2V, due to the redox active components of the T. indica fruit extract. In photoluminescence spectroscopy, the excited and emission peaks were obtained at 432nm and 487nm, respectively. The as-prepared AgNPs showed good results towards antibacterial activities.
