Search

Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors (DMSs) that combine the properties of semiconductors with ferromagnetism have potential application in spin-sensitive electronics (spintronics) devices. The search for DMS materials exploded after the observation of ferromagnetic ordering in III-V (Ga,Mn)As films. Recently, a series of DMS compounds isostructural to iron-based superconductors have been reported. Among them, the highest Curie temperature $T_C$ of 230 K has been achieved in (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_2$As$_2$. However, most DMSs, including (Ga,Mn)As, are p-type, i.e., the carriers that mediate ferromagnetism are holes. For practical applications, DMS with n-type carriers are also advantageous. Here we report the successful synthesis of a II-II-V diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with n-type carriers, Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$. Magnetization measurements show that the ferromagnetic transition occurs up to $T_{C} \sim$ 45 K. Hall effect and Seebeck effect measurements jointly confirm that the dominant carriers are electrons. Through muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), a volume sensitive magnetic probe, we have also confirmed that the ferromagnetism in Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$ is intrinsic and the internal field is static., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We used polarization-resolved Raman scattering to study the magneto-elastic coupling in the parent compounds of several families of Fe-based superconductors (BaFe2As2, EuFe2As2, NaFeAs, LiFeAs, FeSe and LaFeAsO). We observe an emergent Ag-symmetry As phonon mode in the XY scattering geometry whose intensity is significantly enhanced below the magneto-structural transition only for compounds showing magnetic ordering. We conclude that the small lattice anisotropy is insufficient to induce the in-plane electronic polarizability anisotropy necessary for the observed phonon intensity enhancement, and interpret this enhancement below the Neel temperature in terms of the anisotropy of the magnetic moment and magneto-elastic coupling. We evidence a Fano line- shape in the XY scattering geometry resulting from a strong coupling between the Ag (As) phonon mode and the B2g symmetry-like electronic continuum. Strong electron-phonon coupling may be relevant to superconductivity.

Ferromagnetic topological semimetals due to their band topology co-existing with intrinsic magnetization exerted important influences on early study of topological fermions. However, they have not been observed in experiments up to now. In this work, we propose that rutile CrO$_{2}$, a widely used half-metallic ferromagnetic material in magnetic recording taps, exhibits unexpected ferromagnetic topological features. Using first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we reveal that rutile CrO$_2$ hosts the triple nodal points in the absence of spin orbital coupling (SOC). By taking into account of SOC, each triple nodal point splits into two Weyl points, which are located on the magnetic axis with four-fold rotational symmetry. Notably, the Fermi arcs and accompanying quasiparticle interference patterns are clearly visible, which facilitate experimental observations. In addition, we find that another experimentally synthesized CrO$_{2}$ in CaCl$_2$ structure, also hosts the topologically nontrivial ferromagnetic phase. Our findings substantially advance the experimental realization of ferromagnetic topological semimetals. More importantly, room-temperature time-reversal-breaking Weyl fermions in CrO$_{2}$ may result in promising applications related to the topological phenomena in industry., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV survey running in parallel to the eBOSS cosmology project. SPIDERS will obtain optical spectroscopy for large numbers of X-ray-selected AGN and galaxy cluster members detected in wide area eROSITA, XMM-Newton and ROSAT surveys. We describe the methods used to choose spectroscopic targets for two sub-programmes of SPIDERS: X-ray selected AGN candidates detected in the ROSAT All Sky and the XMM-Newton Slew surveys. We have exploited a Bayesian cross-matching algorithm, guided by priors based on mid-IR colour-magnitude information from the WISE survey, to select the most probable optical counterpart to each X-ray detection. We empirically demonstrate the high fidelity of our counterpart selection method using a reference sample of bright well-localised X-ray sources collated from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift-XRT serendipitous catalogues, and also by examining blank-sky locations. We describe the down-selection steps which resulted in the final set of SPIDERS-AGN targets put forward for spectroscopy within the eBOSS/TDSS/SPIDERS survey, and present catalogues of these targets. We also present catalogues of ~12000 ROSAT and ~1500 XMM-Newton Slew survey sources which have existing optical spectroscopy from SDSS-DR12, including the results of our visual inspections. On completion of the SPIDERS program, we expect to have collected homogeneous spectroscopic redshift information over a footprint of ~7500 deg$^2$ for >85 percent of the ROSAT and XMM-Newton Slew survey sources having optical counterparts in the magnitude range 17

Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost per transmitted bit. With the number of channels employed in SDM transmission experiments continuing to rise, there is a requirement for integrated SDM components that are scalable. Here, we demonstrate a cladding-pumped SDM erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that consists of six uncoupled multimode erbium-doped cores. Each core supports three spatial modes, which enables the EDFA to amplify a total of 18 spatial channels simultaneously with a single pump diode and a complexity similar to a single-mode EDFA. The amplifier delivers more than 20-dBm total output power per core and less than 7-dB noise figure over the C-band. This cladding-pumped EDFA enables combined space-division and wavelength-division multiplexed transmission over multiple multimode fiber spans.

We present the first fully simultaneous fits to the NIR and X-ray spectral slope (and its evolution) during a very bright flare from Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's center. Our study arises from ambitious multi-wavelength monitoring campaigns with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and SINFONI. The average multi-wavelength spectrum is well reproduced by a broken power-law with $\Gamma_{NIR}=1.7\pm0.1$ and $\Gamma_X=2.27\pm0.12$. The difference in spectral slopes ($\Delta\Gamma=0.57\pm0.09$) strongly supports synchrotron emission with a cooling break. The flare starts first in the NIR with a flat and bright NIR spectrum, while X-ray radiation is detected only after about $10^3$ s, when a very steep X-ray spectrum ($\Delta\Gamma=1.8\pm0.4$) is observed. These measurements are consistent with synchrotron emission with a cooling break and they suggest that the high energy cut-off in the electron distribution ($\gamma_{max}$) induces an initial cut-off in the optical-UV band that evolves slowly into the X-ray band. The temporal and spectral evolution observed in all bright X-ray flares are also in line with a slow evolution of $\gamma_{max}$. We also observe hints for a variation of the cooling break that might be induced by an evolution of the magnetic field (from $B\sim30\pm8$ G to $B\sim4.8\pm1.7$ G at the X-ray peak). Such drop of the magnetic field at the flare peak would be expected if the acceleration mechanism is tapping energy from the magnetic field, such as in magnetic reconnection. Modulating energy states of metallic glasses (MGs) is significant in understanding the nature of glasses and control their properties. In this study, we show that rejuvenation in enthalpy can be achieved and preserved in bulk MGs by using high pressure (HP) annealing, which is a controllable method to continuously alter the energy states of MGs. Contrary to the decrease in enthalpy by conventional annealing at ambient pressure, such rejuvenation can occur and be enhanced by increasing both of annealing temperature and pressure. By using double aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is revealed that the rejuvenation, which is attributed to coupling effect of high pressure and high temperature, originates from the microstructural change that involves "negative flow units" with a higher atomic packing density compared to that of the elastic matrix of MGs. The results demonstrate that HP annealing is an effective way to rejuvenate MGs into higher energy states, and it may assist in understanding the microstructural origin of the rejuvenation in MGs., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

We study deposition and impact of heavy particles onto an in-line tube-banks within a turbulent cross flow through Lagrangian particle tracking coupled with an LES modelling framework. The flow Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter D and flow velocity between the gap of two vertically adjacent cylinders is 33960. We examine the flow structures across the tube bank and report surface pressure characteristics on cylinders. Taking into account particle-wall impact and bounce, we study dispersion and deposition of three sets of particles (St = 0.35, 0.086, 0.0075) based on 107 particles tracked through the turbulent flow resolved by LES. The deposition efficiency for the three sets of particles are reported across the tube-banks. Positions of particle deposited onto tube-banks shows that significantly more of smaller particles deposit onto the back-side of the back-banks. In the iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), orbital differentiation is an important phenomenon, whereby correlations stronger on the dxy orbital than on the dxz/yz orbital yield quasi-particles with dxy} orbital character having larger mass renormalization and abnormal temperature evolution. However, the physical origin of this orbital differentiation is debated between the Hund's coupling induced unbinding of spin and orbital degrees of freedom and the Hubbard interaction instigated orbital selective Mott transition. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to identify an orbital-dependent correlation-induced quasi-particle (QP) anomaly in LiFeAs. The excellent agreement between our photoemission measurements and first-principles many-body theory calculations shows that the orbital-differentiated QP lifetime anomalies in LiFeAs are controlled by the Hund's coupling.

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) hosting a neutron star and an OB supergiant companion. We examine the available Swift data, as well as other new or archival/serendipitous data, on three sources: IGR J17407-2808, 2XMM J185114.3-000004, and IGR J18175-2419, whose X-ray characteristics qualify them as candidate SFXT, in order to explore their properties and test whether they are consistent with an SFXT nature. As IGR J17407-2808 and 2XMM J185114.3-000004 triggered the Burst Alert Telescope on board Swift, the Swift data allow us to provide their first arcsecond localisations, leading to an unequivocal identification of the source CXOU J174042.0-280724 as the soft X-ray counterpart of IGR J17407-2808, as well as their first broadband spectra, which can be fit with models generally describing accreting neutron stars in HMXBs. While still lacking optical spectroscopy to assess the spectral type of the companion, we propose 2XMM J185114.3-000004 as a very strong SFXT candidate. The nature of IGR J17407-2808 remains, instead, more uncertain. Its broad band properties cannot exclude that the emission originates from either a HMXB (and in that case, a SFXT) or, more likely, a low mass X-ray binary. Finally, based on the deep non-detection in our XRT monitoring campaign and a careful reanalysis of the original Integral data in which the discovery of the source was first reported, we show that IGR J18175-2419 is likely a spurious detection., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 12 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

We report on the identification of the new Galactic Center (GC) transient Swift J174540.7-290015 as a likely low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) located at only 16 arcsec from Sgr A*. This transient was detected on 2016 February 6th during the Swift GC monitoring, and it showed long-term spectral variations compatible with a hard to soft state transition. We observed the field with XMM-Newton on February 26th for 35 ks, detecting the source in the soft state, characterised by a low level of variability and a soft X-ray thermal spectrum with a high energy tail (detected by INTEGRAL up to ~50 keV), typical of either accreting neutron stars or black holes. We observed: i) a high column density of neutral absorbing material, suggesting that Swift J174540.7-290015 is located near or beyond the GC and; ii) a sub-Solar Iron abundance, therefore we argue that Iron is depleted into dust grains. The lack of detection of FeK absorption lines, eclipses or dipping suggests that the accretion disc is observed at a low inclination angle. Radio (VLA) observations did not detect any radio counterpart to Swift J174540.7-290015. No evidence for X-ray or radio periodicity is found. The location of the transient was observed also in the near-IR with GROND at MPG/ESO La Silla 2.2m telescope and VLT/NaCo pre- and post-outburst. Turbulent flow across an in-line array of tube-banks with transverse and longitudinal pitch PT /D = 2.67, and PL /D = 2.31, has been simulated successfully by Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based on the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid scale model (SGS), in which a wall-layer model is used to reduce the computational cost. The flow structures across the tube-banks were examined through the normalized Q criterion. The surface pressure characteristics from the middle cylinder within each column of cylinders are found to agree well with the existing experimental data, as did also the values of drag and lift coefficients. These results indicate that cylinders from the second column experience the minimum drag force and maximum lift force fluctuation. Spectral analyses were performed for velocity signals sampled behind each middle cylinder axis, which show that the dominant vortex shedding frequency does not vary across the tube-banks. On this basis, we also examined the shear layer instability. Finally, we report auto-correlation functions for streamwise and cross velocity fluctuations as a function of the spanwise length., Comment: 38 pages, 15 Figs

We synthesized a series of V-doped LiFe$_{1-x}$V$_x$As single crystals. The superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of LiFeAs decreases rapidly at a rate of 7 K per 1\% V. The Hall coefficient of LiFeAs switches from negative to positive with 4.2\% V doping, showing that V doping introduces hole carriers. This observation is further confirmed by the evaluation of the Fermi surface volume measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), from which a 0.3 hole doping per V atom introduced is deduced. Interestingly, the introduction of holes does not follow a rigid band shift. We also show that the temperature evolution of the electrical resistivity as a function of doping is consistent with a crossover from a Fermi liquid to a non-Fermi liquid. Our ARPES data indicate that the non-Fermi liquid behavior is mostly enhanced when one of the hole $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ Fermi surfaces is well nested by the antiferromagnetic wave vector to the inner electron Fermi surface pocket with the $d_{xy}$ orbital character. The magnetic susceptibility of LiFe$_{1-x}$V$_x$As suggests the presence of strong magnetic impurities following V doping, thus providing a natural explanation to the rapid suppression of superconductivity upon V doping., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Recently, ZrTe5 and HfTe5 are theoretically studied to be the most promising layered topological insulators since they are both interlayer weakly bonded materials and also with a large bulk gap in the single layer. It paves a new way for the study of novel topological quantum phenomenon tuned via external parameters. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and properties evolution in HfTe5 single crystal induced via pressures. Our experiments indicated that anomaly resistance peak moves to low temperature first before reverses to high temperature followed by disappearance which is opposite to the low pressure effect on ZrTe5. HfTe5 became superconductive above ~5.5 GPa up to at least 35 GPa in the measured range. The highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc) around 5 K was achieved at 20 GPa. High pressure Raman revealed that new modes appeared around pressure where superconductivity occurs. Crystal structure studies shown that the superconductivity is related to the phase transition from Cmcm structure to monoclinic C2/m structure. The second phase transition from C2/m to P-1 structure occurs at 12 GPa. We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to elucidate the Cooper pairing of the iron pnictide superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2. By a cold-cleaving technique, we obtain atomically resolved termination surfaces with different layer identities. Remarkably, we observe that the low-energy tunneling spectrum related to superconductivity has an unprecedented dependence on the layer-identity. By cross-referencing with the angle-revolved photoemission results and the tunneling data of LiFeAs, we find that tunneling on each termination surface probes superconductivity through selecting distinct Fe-3d orbitals. These findings imply the real-space orbital features of the Cooper pairing in the iron pnictide superconductors, and propose a new and general concept that, for complex multi-orbital material, tunneling on different terminating layers can feature orbital selectivity.

In copper-oxide and iron-based high temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductors, many physical properties exhibit in-plane anisotropy, which is believed to be caused by a rotational symmetry-breaking nematic order, whose origin and its relationship to superconductivity remain elusive. In many iron-pnictides, a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ coincides with the magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$, making the orbital and spin degrees of freedom highly entangled. NaFeAs is a system where $T_{\rm s}$ = 54 K is well separated from $T_{\rm N}$ = 42 K, which helps simplify the experimental situation. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.042) that revealed orbital and spin nematicity occurring at a temperature $T^{\rm *}$ far above $T_{\rm s}$ in the tetragonal phase. We show that the NMR spectra splitting and its evolution can be explained by an incommensurate orbital order that sets in below $T^{\rm *}$ and becomes commensurate below $T_{\rm s}$, which brings about the observed spin nematicity., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.B (Rapid Commun.)

The optical properties of LiFeAs with $T_c \simeq$ 18 K have been determined in the normal and superconducting states. The superposition of two Drude components yields a good description of the low-frequency optical response in the normal state. Below $T_c$, the optical conductivity reveals two isotropic superconducting gaps with $\Delta_{1} \simeq 2.9$ $\pm$ 0.2 meV and $\Delta_{2} \simeq 5.5$ $\pm$ 0.4 meV. A comparison between the superconducting-state Mattis-Bardeen and the normal-state Drude components, in combination with a spectral weight analysis, indicates that the spectral weight associated with a band which has a very small scattering rate is fully transferred to the superfluid weight upon the superconducting condensate. The electronic structure of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0.30$, $y=0.15$) in single crystal form has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). %High density of states of nondispersive bands composed of the Zn $3d$ orbitals are observed with ultraviolet incident light. Measurements with soft x-rays clarify the host valence-band electronic structure primarily composed of the As $4p$ states. Two hole pockets around the $\Gamma$ point, a hole corrugated cylinder surrounding the $\Gamma$ and Z points, and an electron pocket around the Z point are observed, and explain the metallic transport of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. This is contrasted with Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As (GaMnAs), where it is located above the As $4p$ valence-band maximum (VBM) and no Fermi surfaces have been clearly identified. Resonance soft x-ray ARPES measurements reveal a nondispersive (Kondo resonance-like) Mn $3d$ impurity band near the Fermi level, as in the case of GaMnAs. However, the impurity band is located well below the VBM, unlike the impurity band in GaMnAs, which is located around and above the VBM. We conclude that, while the strong hybridization between the Mn $3d$ and the As $4p$ orbitals plays an important role in creating the impurity band and inducing high temperature ferromagnetism in both systems, the metallic transport may predominantly occur in the host valence band in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and in the impurity band in GaMnAs.

The Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) is a targeted survey probing the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of a representative sample of ~140 nearby (z<0.02) Seyfert galaxies by means of optical integral field spectroscopy. The survey is based on a homogeneous data set observed using the Wide Field Spectrograph WiFeS. The data provide a 25x38 arcsec$^2$ field-of-view around the galaxy centre at typically ~1.5 arcsec spatial resolution and cover a wavelength range between ~3400 - 7100 $\AA$ at spectral resolutions of ~100 km s$^{-1}$ and ~50 km s$^{-1}$ in the blue and red parts, respectively. The survey is primarily designed to study gas excitation and star formation around AGN, with a special focus on the shape of the AGN ionising continuum, the interaction between radio jets and the NLR gas, and the nature of nuclear LINER emission. A series of LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As compounds with different Co concentrations have been studied by transport, optical spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. We observed a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid (FL-NFL-FL) crossover alongside a monotonic suppression of the superconductivity with increasing Co content. In parallel to the FL-NFL-FL crossover, we found that both the low-energy spin fluctuations and Fermi surface nesting are enhanced and then diminished, strongly suggesting that the NFL behavior in LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As is induced by low-energy spin fluctuations which are very likely tuned by Fermi surface nesting. Our study reveals a unique phase diagram of LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As where the region of NFL is moved to the boundary of the superconducting phase, implying that they are probably governed by different mechanisms., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

The precise spectra of Cosmic Ray (CR) electrons and positrons have been published by the measurement of AMS-02. It is reasonable to regard the difference between the electrons and positrons spectra ( $\triangle \Phi= \Phi_{e^-}-\Phi_{e^+}$ ) as being dominated by primary electrons. Noticing that the resulting electron spectrum shows no sign of spectral softening above 20 GeV, which is in contrast with the prediction of standard model. In this work, we generalize the analytic one dimensional two-halo model of diffusion to a three dimensional realistic calculation by implementing a spatial variant diffusion coefficients in DRAGON package. As a result, we can reproduce the spectral hardening of protons observed by several experiments, and predict an excess of high energy primary electrons which agrees with the measurement reasonably well. Unlike the break spectrum obtained for protons, the model calculation predicts a smooth electron excess and thus slightly over predicts the flux from tens of GeV to 100GeV. The recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals are new members of topological materials. Starting from them, topological superconductivity may be achieved, e.g. by carrier doping or applying pressure. Here we report high-pressure resistance and X-ray diffraction study of the three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2. Superconductivity with Tc ~ 2.0 K is observed at 8.5 GPa. The Tc keeps increasing to about 4.0 K at 21.3 GPa, then shows a nearly constant pressure dependence up to the highest pressure 50.9 GPa. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a structure phase transition around 3.5 GPa. Our observation of superconductivity in pressurized topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 provides a new candidate for topological superconductor, as argued in a recent point contact study and a theoretical work., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures
