101. Pd nanoparticles immobilized on graphite oxide modified with a base: Highly efficient catalysts for selective hydrogenation of citral

Abstract

In this work, the Pd-based catalysts were designed via immobilizing Pd nanoparticles on graphite oxide (GO) modified with organic base, 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG), which was used for the selective hydrogenation of citral. These catalysts were characterized by various techniques including IR, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that the Pd particles with size less than 5 nm were uniformly distributed throughout the support, and they were in the electron-deficient state due to the strong interactions with the modified support. The resultant Pd-TMG/GO catalyst displayed high efficiency for the selective hydrogenation of citral with a turnover frequency of 7100 h−1 as well as superior selectivity to citronellal of 89.6%. Moreover, the catalyst can be reused for five times without obvious activity loss, which may result from its stable structure.

Abstract

The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is designed to precisely measure the neutrino mixing angle theta(13). The anti-neutrino detectors are shielded by highly purified water against radioactivity and spallation neutrons from surrounding rocks. The water also serves as a Cherenkov detector to tag cosmic-ray muons, which induce main backgrounds. In order to study water purification and details of the detector response, a prototype water Cherenkov detector is constructed at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Beijing. The detector is divided by Tyvek into two sections and viewed by two 8 in. photomultipliers. Cosmic-ray muons are used for detector response studies and a Monte Carlo simulation based on the Geant4 package shows good agreement with the experimental data. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Resistive plate chambers will be used in the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment to help veto backgrounds created by cosmic-ray muons. The mass production of RPCs began in 2008 and by the end of 2009, 1600 RPCs (3500 m2) had been produced and tested. This paper describes the production and quality control procedures, and quality assurance using cosmic-ray testing.

Abstract

Zinc porphyrin (TP-Zn)-based conjugated microporous polymer (Zn-CMP) spheres were obtained via Sonagashira–Hagihara cross coupling reactions between 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)porphyrin-Zn(II) and brominated monomers directed by bidentate bipyridine (BP)-type ligands for the first time, and the sphere diameters could be adjusted from 320 to 740 nm. The coordination between BP and TP-Zn was proved to be the key to forming spheres.

Abstract

Although the existence of dark matter is supported by many evidences, based on astrophysical measurements, its nature is still completely unknown. One major candidate is represented by weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which could in principle be detected through their collisions with ordinary nuclei in a sensitive target, producing observable low-energy (ud_less_than100 keV) nuclear recoils. The DarkSide program aims at the WIPMs detection using a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC). In this paper we quickly review the DarkSide program focusing in particular on the next generation experiment DarkSide-G2, a 3.6-ton LAr-TPC. The different detector components are described as well as the improvements needed to scale the detector from DarkSide-50 (50 kg LAr-TPC) up to DarkSide-G2. Abstract

This paper presents experimental results of RPCs performances with different working gas mixtures. Owing to Freon's high global warming potential, its threat to RPCs aging and its large consumption in large particle physics experiments, studies to minimize the concentration of HFC-134A, and even its complete replacement, have been undertaken. In addition, the reduction of iso-butane is also a favorable strategy, due to the flammability level of the gas mixture. Freon-less working gas mixture of Ar/HFC-134A/i-C4H10/CO2=20/0/8/72 was chosen with plateau efficiency of 86.3% and noise rate of 0.61 Hz/cm2. For working gas with lower ratio of Freon, Ar/HFC-134A/i-C4H10/CO2=20/20/8/52 was suggested with plateau efficiency of 91.0% and noise rate of 0.19 Hz/cm2, in which Freon was decreased by 22% compared to the BESIII RPC gas mixture. Furthermore, iso-butane was decreased to 6% with RPC's efficiency of 90% and noise rate of 0.20 Hz/cm2 achieved. Finally, the explanation of RPC's different performances at various working gas mixtures has been validated by the investigation of secondary streamers. This study will be helpful for RPC's application in future large particle physics experiments, in which RPCs can run in streamer mode.

Abstract

In order to suppress muon-induced background, veto detector is very important, even if the particle physics experiments are deployed underground. Owing to its high efficiency, low cost and low sensitivity to environmental gamma-rays, resistive plate chamber (RPC) is a good candidate for large-area underground cosmic-ray detectors. Based on the experiences and lessons from the RPC veto detector in Daya Bay neutrino experiment, an improved design has been proposed considering the extremely low muon flux, which results in underestimation of RPC layer detection efficiency in self-calibration. Additionally, allowing for the studies of 9Li/8He and fast neutrons, the tracking ability has been considered in design. Finally, an improved design of an RPC underground cosmic-ray detector has been achieved.

Abstract

Polyurea (PU) spheres with size of 2–10 μm were derived through the polymerization of CO 2 with 1,4-butanediamine, and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and TG analysis. It was demonstrated that the PU spheres displayed flower-like morphology with the betel thickness around 30 nm, and they had high thermal stability. The resultant PU spheres were used to immobilize metal particles, and a series of PU-supported metal nanocatalysts including Pt/PU, Au/PU, Pd/PU were prepared via just mixing the metal precursors with the PU spheres in water, followed by the reduction of metal ions by NaBH 4 . Transmission electron microscopy examination indicated that the metal nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the PU spheres with mean particle size less than 3.0 nm, and the Pt particles existed mainly in the form of metallic state as confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The performance of the Pt/PU catalyst was tested in the catalytic hydrogenation of o -chloronitrobenzene, and a high selectivity of 99.5% toward o -chloroaniline at complete conversion of o -chloronitrobenzene was obtained at room temperature.

Abstract

The solar neutrino experiment Borexino, which is located in the Gran Sasso underground laboratories, is in a unique position to study muon-induced backgrounds in an organic liquid scintillator. In this study, a large sample of cosmic muons is identified and tracked by a muon veto detector external to the liquid scintillator, and by the specific light patterns observed when muons cross the scintillator volume. The yield of muon-induced neutrons is found to be Yn =(3.10+-0.11)10-4 n/({\mu} (g/cm2)). The distance profile between the parent muon track and the neutron capture point has the average value {\lambda} = (81.5 +- 2.7)cm. Additionally the yields of a number of cosmogenic radioisotopes are measured for 12N, 12B, 8He, 9C, 9Li, 8B, 6He, 8Li, 11Be, 10C and 11C. All results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation predictions using the Fluka and Geant4 packages. General agreement between data and simulation is observed for the cosmogenic production yields with a few exceptions, the most prominent case being 11C yield for which both codes return about 50% lower values. Abstract

As part of the DarkSide program of direct dark matter searches using liquid argon TPCs, a prototype detector with an active volume containing 10 kg of liquid argon, DarkSide-10, was built and operated underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. A critically important parameter for such devices is the scintillation light yield, as photon statistics limits the rejection of electron-recoil backgrounds by pulse shape discrimination. We have measured the light yield of DarkSide-10 using the readily-identifiable full-absorption peaks from gamma ray sources combined with single-photoelectron calibrations using low-occupancy laser pulses. For gamma lines of energies in the range 122-1275 keV, we get consistent light yields averaging 8.887+-0.003(stat)+-0.444(sys) p.e./keVee. With additional purification, the light yield measured at 511 keV increased to 9.142+-0.006(stat) p.e./keVee., 10 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We have studied the alpha decays of 214Po into 210Pb and of 212Po into 208Pb tagged by the coincidence with the preceding beta decays from 214Bi and 212Bi, respectively. The employed 222Rn, 232Th, and 220Rn sources were sealed inside quartz vials and inserted in the Counting Test Facility at the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. We find that the mean lifetime of 214Po is (236.00 +- 0.42(stat) +- 0.15(syst)) \mu s and that of 212Po is (425.1 +- 0.9(stat) +- 1.2(syst)) ns. Our results, obtained from data with signal-to-background ratio larger than 1000, reduce the overall uncertainties and are compatible with previous measurements., Comment: RevTex, 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. In order to shorten the braking distance of mining electric locomotive and improve the safety of underground transportation effectively. The existing handwheel-brake shoe brake device is analyzed. In view of its shortcomings, an air disc brake device and a tread sweeper are put forward. Through calculation verification and simulation analysis, it is found that the device can shorten the braking distance of mining electric locomotive effectively and it can meet the requirements of The Specification of Narrow Tramroad Gauge Electric Locomotive for Mine. Abstract

Borexino was the first experiment to detect solar neutrinos in real-time in the sub-MeV region. In order to achieve high precision in the determination of neutrino rates, the detector design includes an internal and an external calibration system. This paper describes both calibration systems and the calibration campaigns that were carried out in the period between 2008 and 2011. We discuss some of the results and show that the calibration procedures preserved the radiopurity of the scintillator. The calibrations provided a detailed understanding of the detector response and led to a significant reduction of the systematic uncertainties in the Borexino measurements.

Abstract

We have measured the muon flux at the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory (3800 m w.e.) to be (3.41 \pm 0.01) \times 10-4m-2s-1 using four years of Borexino data. A modulation of this signal is observed with a period of (366\pm3) days and a relative amplitude of (1.29 \pm 0.07)%. The measured phase is (179 \pm 6) days, corresponding to a maximum on the 28th of June. Using the most complete atmospheric data models available, muon rate fluctuations are shown to be positively correlated with atmospheric temperature, with an effective coefficient {\alpha}T = 0.93 \pm 0.04. Abstract

We report on a search for the day-night asymmetry of the Be-7 solar neutrino rate measured by Borexino at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. The measured value, Adn=0.001 +- 0.012 (stat) +- 0.007 (syst), shows the absence of a significant asymmetry. This result alone rejects the so-called LOW solution at more than 8.5 sigma. Combined with the other solar neutrino data, it isolates the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) -- MSW solution at DeltaChi2 > 190 without relying on the assumption of CPT symmetry in the neutrino sector. We also show that including the day-night asymmetry, data from Borexino alone restricts the MSW neutrino oscillations to the LMA solution at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Geo-neutrinos, electron anti-neutrinos produced in beta decays of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes in the Earth, are a unique direct probe of our planet's interior. We report the first observation at more than 3$\sigma$ C.L. of geo-neutrinos, performed with the Borexino detector at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Anti-neutrinos are detected through the neutron inverse beta decay reaction. With a 252.6 ton-yr fiducial exposure after all selection cuts, we detected 9.9^{+4.1}_{-3.4}(^{+14.6}_{-8.2}) geo-neutrino events, with errors corresponding to a 68.3%(99.73%) C.L. From the $\ln{\cal{L}}$ profile, the statistical significance of the Borexino geo-neutrino observation corresponds to a 99.997% C.L. Our measurement of the geo-neutrinos rate is 3.9^{+1.6}_{-1.3}(^{+5.8}_{-3.2}) events/(100ton-yr). This measurement rejects the hypothesis of an active geo-reactor in the Earth's core with a power above 3 TW at 95% C.L. The observed prompt positron spectrum above 2.6 MeV is compatible with that expected from european nuclear reactors (mean base line of approximately 1000 km). Our measurement of reactor anti-neutrinos excludes the non-oscillation hypothesis at 99.60% C.L., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The Ru/MMT@IL-SO3H catalyst was prepared by immobilizing Ru nanoparticles onto montmorillonite (MMT) with the assistance of an acidic ionic liquid (1-sulfobutyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrosulfate, IL-SO3H). Transmission electron microscopy examination indicated that the loaded Ru species were distributed uniformly on the MMT support with a particle size of about 1.3 nm, which existed mainly in the form of a metallic state as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. X-Ray diffraction analysis indicated that the interlayer distance of MMT was increased due to the impregnation of IL-SO3H. The activity of Ru/MMT@IL-SO3H for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of various phenolic compounds was investigated. It was demonstrated that the as-prepared catalyst served as a bifunctional catalyst and displayed high efficiency for HDO reactions of a series of phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes.

Abstract

Ti3+ self-doped TiOx@anatase core–shell structures were prepared via hydrolysis of Ti2(SO4)3 around TiO particles, followed by post-calcination at temperatures from 723 to 823 K. The as-prepared TiOx@anatase was examined by means of transmission electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that the samples displayed core–shell structures with the shell in the anatase form and the core in the anatase and rutile phases, and a large number of Ti3+ ions were present. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis indicated that the Ti3+ ions were located throughout the whole sample, including the shell, the core and the interface between the core and the shell. The as-prepared TiOx@anatase core–shell catalysts can absorb visible light and showed good activity for catalyzing the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. In particular, the TiOx@anatase obtained at 773 K showed the best performance, due to the high concentration of well-dispersed Ti3+ ions in the sample.

Abstract

Heteropolyanion-based ionic liquids with -SO3H functionalized cations and PMo11VO404- anions were synthesized and applied in the conversion of cellulose into formic acid (FA). It was demonstrated that the as-prepared ILs showed enhanced activity for catalysing cellulose conversion to FA in the presence of oxygen in water compared to H4PMo11VO40. A high FA yield over 50% accompanied by a FA concentration of ~10% in reaction solution was obtained at 180 °C and in an oxygen pressure of 1.0 MPa. The possible pathway of FA production from cellulose was investigated. It was indicated that the resulting ILs served as bifunctional catalysts with cations catalysing the cellulose hydrolysis to glucose and anions catalysing glucose oxidation to FA. Abstract

We report constraints on spin-independent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon scattering using a 3.35e4 kg-day exposure of the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment. A dual-phase xenon time projection chamber with 250 kg of active mass is operated at the Sanford Underground Research Facility under Lead, South Dakota (USA). With roughly fourfold improvement in sensitivity for high WIMP masses relative to our previous results, this search yields no evidence of WIMP nuclear recoils. At a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c^2, WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross sections above 2.2e-46 cm^2 are excluded at the 90% confidence level. When combined with the previously reported LUX exposure, this exclusion strengthens to 1.1e-46 cm^2 at 50 GeV/c^2., Comment: This version includes a combined analysis with previously published LUX results, and matches the version published in PRL

Abstract

The LUX experiment has performed searches for dark matter particles scattering elastically on xenon nuclei, leading to stringent upper limits on the nuclear scattering cross sections for dark matter. Here, for results derived from ${1.4}\times 10^{4}\;\mathrm{kg\,days}$ of target exposure in 2013, details of the calibration, event-reconstruction, modeling, and statistical tests that underlie the results are presented. Detector performance is characterized, including measured efficiencies, stability of response, position resolution, and discrimination between electron- and nuclear-recoil populations. Models are developed for the drift field, optical properties, background populations, the electron- and nuclear-recoil responses, and the absolute rate of low-energy background events. Innovations in the analysis include in situ measurement of the photomultipliers' response to xenon scintillation photons, verification of fiducial mass with a low-energy internal calibration source, and new empirical models for low-energy signal yield based on large-sample, in situ calibrations.

Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose experiment, under construction in southeast China, that is designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering and precisely measure neutrino oscillation parameters. Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role for JUNO detector design, detector commissioning, offline data processing, and physics processing. The JUNO experiment has the world’s largest liquid scintillator detector instrumented with many thousands of PMTs. The broad energy range of interest, long lifetime, and the large scale present data processing challenges across all areas. This paper describes the JUNO simulation software, highlighting the challenges of JUNO simulation and solutions to meet these challenges, including such issues as support for time-correlated analysis, event mixing, event correlation and handling the simulation of many millions of optical photons.
