Abstract

We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850 mu m continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353 GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having three or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of N-H2 > 5 x10(21) cm(-2). By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with young stellar objects, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other.

112. Computational complexity comparison of feedforward/radial basis function/recurrent neural network-based equalizer for a 50-Gb/s PAM4 direct-detection optical link

Abstract

The computational complexity and system bit-error-rate (BER) performance of four types of neural-network-based nonlinear equalizers are analyzed for a 50-Gb/s pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 direct-detection (DD) optical link. The four types are feedforward neural networks (F-NN), radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NN), auto-regressive recurrent neural networks (AR-RNN) and layer-recurrent neural networks (L-RNN). Numerical results show that, for a fixed BER threshold, the AR-RNN-based equalizers have the lowest computational complexity. Amongst all the nonlinear NN-based equalizers with the same number of inputs and hidden neurons, F-NN-based equalizers have the lowest computational complexity while the AR-RNN-based equalizers exhibit the best BER performance. Compared with F-NN or RNN, RBF-NN tends to require more hidden neurons with the increase of the number of inputs, making it not suitable for long fiber transmission distance. We also demonstrate that only a few tens of multiplications per symbol are needed for NN-based equalizers to guarantee a good BER performance. This relatively low computational complexity signifies that various NN-based equalizers can be potentially implemented in real time. More broadly, this paper provides guidelines for selecting a suitable NN-based equalizer based on BER and computational complexity requirements.

Abstract

Existing methods for image contrast enhancement focus mainly on the properties of the image to be processed while excluding any consideration of the observer characteristics. In several applications, particularly in the medical imaging area, effective contrast enhancement for diagnostic purposes can be achieved by including certain basic human visual properties. In this paper we shall present a novel adaptive algorithm that tailors the required amount of contrast enhancement based on the local contrast of the image and the observer's Just-Noticeable-Difference (JND). This algorithm always produces adequate contrast in the output image, and results in almost no ringing artifacts even around sharp transition regions, which is often seen in images processed by conventional contrast enhancement techniques. By separating smooth and detail areas of an image and considering the dependence of noise visibility on the spatial activity of the image, the algorithm treats them differently and thus avoids excessive enhancement of noise, which is another common problem for many existing contrast enhancement techniques. The present JND-Guided Adaptive Contrast Enhancement (JGACE) technique is very general and can be applied to a variety of images. In particular, it offers considerable benefits in digital radiography applications where the objective is to increase the diagnostic utility of images. A detailed performance evaluation together with a comparison with the existing techniques is given to demonstrate the strong features of JGACE.

Abstract

The mite (Varroa destructor) has become the greatest threat to apiculture worldwide. As the original host of the mite, Apis cerana can effectively resist the mite. An increased understanding of the resistance mechanisms of Eastern honeybees against V. destructor may help researchers to protect other species against these parasites. In this study, the proteomes of 4 Apis cerana colonies were analyzed using an isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation technology. We determined the differences in gene and protein expression between susceptible and resistant colonies that were either unchallenged or challenged by V. destructor. The results showed that a total of 1532 proteins were identified. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis suggested that the transcription factors and basic metabolic and respiratory processes were efficient and feasible factors controlling this resistance, and 12 differentially expressed proteins were identified in Venn analysis. The results were validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This study may provide insight into the genetic mechanisms underlying the resistance of honeybee to mites.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: LncRNA HCG18 is considered to be an oncogene in many types of tumors. The aim of this study was to explore the role of lncRNA HCG18 in gastric cancer (GC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: HCG18 levels in GC tissues were detected. Potential biological influences of HCG18 on GC cell phenotypes were examined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK- 8), wound healing and transwell assay. Subsequently, bioinformatics analysis, Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), Luciferase assay and rescue experiments were conducted to identify the regulatory network of HCG18 in GC. RESULTS: It was found that HCG18 was upregulated in GC samples, and the knockdown of HCG18 inhibited proliferative and migratory abilities in GC. The transcription factor E2F1 could directly bind to the promoter region of HCG18 and thus activate its transcription. In addition, HCG18 sponged miR-197-3p to stimulate the malignant development of GC. CONCLUSIONS: HCG18 is upregulated in GC samples by E2F1 induction, which stimulates proliferative and migratory abilities in GC by binding to miR-197-3p. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
