On 2004 August 15, we observed a fast (shorter than 10 hours) state transition in the bright black-hole transient GX 339-4 simultaneously with RossiXTE and INTEGRAL. This transition was evident both in timing and spectral properties. Combining the data from PCA, HEXTE and IBIS, we obtained good quality broad-band (3-200 keV) energy spectra before and after the transition. These spectra indicate that the hard component steepened. Also, the high-energy cutoff that was present at ~70 keV before the transition was not detected after the transition. This is the first time that an accurate determination of the broad-band spectrum across such a transition has been measured on a short time scale. It shows that, although some spectral parameters do not change abruptly through the transition, the high-energy cutoff increases/disappears rather fast. We present an analysis of data of the black hole candidate and X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 taken with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer , covering the whole 1999 outburst of this source. We found three main different types of low-frequency QPOs with well-defined time-lags, coherence and intensity properties. Rapid transitions between different power spectral shapes were observed and their link with the count rate was studied. The frequency of the narrow 4.5–6 Hz type-B QPO was found to be linearly correlated with the count rate.

(Abridged) We report on RXTE and optical/near-infrared (nIR) observations of the black hole transient GX 339-4, made over a time span of 8 months in 2002 and covering the initial rise and transition from a hard to a soft spectral state. Two patterns of correlated X-ray-optical/nIR behavior were found. During the hard state the optical/nIR and X-ray fluxes correlated well, with a nIR vs. X-ray flux relation similar to the relation between X-ray and radio fluxes found in previous studies of GX 339-4 and other black hole binaries. As GX 339-4 went through an intermediate state the optical/nIR fluxes decreased rapidly and once it had entered the spectrally soft state, the optical/nIR spectrum was much bluer and the ratio of X-ray to nIR flux was higher by a factor of more than 10 compared to the hard state. In the spectrally soft state nIR-changes preceded those in the X-rays by more than 2 weeks, indicating a disk origin of the nIR. We present SEDs, including radio data, and discuss possible sources for the optical/nIR emission. We conclude that in the hard state this emission probably originates in the optically thin part of a jet and that in none of the X-ray states X-ray reprocessing is the dominant source of optical/nIR emission. Finally, comparing the light curves from the ASM and PCA instruments, we find that the X-ray/nIR delay depends critically on the sensitivity of the X-ray detector, with the delay inferred from the PCA (if present at all) being a factor of 3-6 times shorter than the delay inferred from the ASM; this may be important in interpreting previously reported X-ray-optical/nIR lags., 13 pages, including 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present the results of the timing and color analysis of more than two hundred RXTE/PCA observations of the bright black-hole transient GX 339-4 obtained during its 2002/2003 outburst. The color-intensity evolution of the system, coupled to the properties of its fast time variability, allow the identification of four separate states. Depending on the state, strong noise is detected, together with a variety of quasi-periodic oscillations at frequencies from 0.2 to 8 Hz. We present a characterization of the timing parameters of these states and compare them to what has been observed in other systems. In X-ray binaries, the frequencies revealed in X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are often interpreted as characteristic frequencies in the inner accretion disk, though the exact oscillation mechanism is unknown at present. Broadened Fe K-alpha lines are also excellent diagnostics of the inner accretion flow, if their broadening is indeed due to inner disk reflection. Herein, we present two cases where the flux and equivalent width of the Fe K-alpha emission lines in spectra of the Galactic black hole GRS 1915+105 vary with the phase of strong 1 Hz and 2 Hz QPOs in the X-ray flux. These results provide strong evidence that both QPOs and the Fe-alpha lines originate in the inner disk. If the 1 Hz QPO is only a Keplerian orbital frequency, the QPO comes from a distance of 84 +/- 26 R_Schw from the black hole; the 2 Hz QPO implies a radius of 50 +/- 15 R_Schw. At these radii, relativistic shaping of a disk line is inevitable. Moreover, the link holds in radio-bright and radio-faint phases, signaling that in systems like GRS 1915+105, the Fe K-alpha line is a disk line and not a jet line as per SS 433. A particularly interesting possibility is that a stable warp in the inner disk, e.g. due to Lense-Thirring precession, may produce the observed QPOs and line modulations. More broadly, the FeK-QPO link provides an unprecedented mechanism for revealing the inner accretion flow and relativistic regime in accreting systems, in that it gives two measures of radius: for a given disk QPO model, the frequency translates into a specific radius, and relativistic line models yield radii directly.

We present the results of an extensive timing analysis of the 1999 outburst of the soft X-ray transient and black hole candidate XTE J1859+226 as observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. Three main different types of low frequency (1-9 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were observed and classified, strenghtening the general picture that is emerging for the variability properties of black hole X-ray binaires. Rapid transitions between different power spectral shapes were observed and their link with the count rate was studied. Furthermore, we show that a frequency of ~6 Hz seems to hold a particular place: one of the three QPO types we found was very stable when at this frequency, as it happens in Z sources as well. Atoll-type neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries share lots of properties with low/hard state black hole candidates (BHC) and are therefore the key sources for our understanding of the differences and similarities in the disc-jet connection of BHC and NS systems and the physical processes involved. We present the analysis of simultaneous radio (VLA) and X-ray (RXTE) observations of three atoll sources: 4U 1728–34, 4U 1820–30 and Ser X-1 (first radio detection). In 4U 1728–34 we find a significant correlation between radio and X-ray flux and, for the first time in an X-ray binary, a significant quantitative correlation between radio flux and X-ray timing features. As in BHCs it seems that also in atolls (i.e. in 4U 1820-30, Ser X-1 and in one observation of 4U 1728-34) the radio emission is 'quenched' above a certain luminosity, when the sources are in a softer state.

We have analyzed spectra of the Galactic black hole GX 339-4 obtained through simultaneous 76 ksec XMM-Newton/EPIC-pn and 10 ksec RXTE observations during a bright phase of its 2002-2003 outburst. An extremely skewed, relativistic Fe K-alpha emission line and ionized disk reflection spectrum are revealed in these spectra. Self-consistent models for the Fe K-alpha emission line profile and disk reflection spectrum rule-out an inner disk radius compatible with a Schwarzschild black hole at more than the 8 sigma level of confidence. The best-fit inner disk radius of 2-3 r_g suggests that GX 339-4 harbors a black hole with a ~ 0.8-0.9 (where r_g = GM/c^2 and a=cJ/GM^2, and assuming that reflection in the plunging region is relatively small). This confirms indications for black hole spin based on a Chandra spectrum obtained later in the outburst. The emission line and reflection spectrum also rule-out a standard power-law disk emissivity in GX 339-4; a broken power-law form with enhanced emissivity inside ~6 r_{g} gives improved fits at more than the 8 sigma level of confidence. The extreme red wing of the line and steep emissivity require a centrally--concentrated source of hard X-rays which can strongly illuminate the inner disk. Hard X-ray emission from the base of a jet - enhanced by gravitational light bending effects - could create the concentrated hard X-ray emission; this process may be related to magnetic connections between the black hole and the inner disk. We present results from four Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the bright low mass X-ray binary LMC X-2. During these observations, which span a year and include over 160 hrs of data, the source exhibits clear evolution through three branches on its hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams, consistent with the flaring, normal, and horizontal branches (FB, NB, HB) of a Z-source, and remarkably similar to Z-tracks derived for GX 17+2, Sco X-1 and GX 349+2. LMC X-2 was observed in the FB, NB, and HB for roughly 30%, 40%, and 30% respectively of the total time covered. The source traces out the full extent of the Z in ~1 day, and the Z-track shows evidence for secular shifts on a timescale in excess of a few days. Although the count rate of LMC X-2 is low compared with the other known Z-sources due to its greater distance, the power density spectra selected by branch show very-low-frequency noise characteristics at least consistent with those from other Z-sources. We report on a detailed analysis of data obtained over nearly four years with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of the Z source GX 5-1. From a spectral analysis using a hardness-intensity diagram it was found that the source traced out the typical Z-shaped pattern. The study of the power spectral properties showed that when the source moved on the Horizontal Branch towards the Normal Branch the fractional rms amplitudes and timescales of all variability decreased, while their FWHMs increased. The frequency separation of the two kHz QPO peaks decreased from 344+-12 Hz to 232+-13 Hz. At low frequencies, besides the horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) and its second harmonic, two additional broad Lorentzian components were needed to obtain acceptable fits. These broad Lorentzians have Q-values of ~1-2 and have frequencies 0.5 and 1.5 times the HBO frequency. When interpreted as being related to the HBO, they seem to favor disc models for the HBO over the magnetic beat-frequency model. We compare the timing properties and colour-colour diagrams (CDs) of GX 5-1 with those of the back hole candidate XTE J1550-564 and the atoll source 4U 1608-52. The CDs are strikingly similar when a colour scheme is used that is commonly employed in back hole studies. However, this may be a degeneracy as the CDs turn out to be more complicated when colours common in neutron star studies are employed. Apart from some remarkable similarities between the CD of XTE J1550-564 and that of 4U 1608-52, several differences can be seen between these CDs and that of GX 5-1. We present the results of the analysis of 11 RXTE/PCA observations of the January 2002 outburst of the black-hole transient XTE J1550-564. The outburst was rather short, with an e-folding time of ~11 days in the PCA band 3-25 keV. The source was seen in an extreme low/hard state. The energy spectra could be fitted with a power law slightly steepening (Gamma ~ 1.4 to ~1.5) in time, with a high-energy cutoff decreasing from ~300 keV to ~100 keV and some additional features between 6 and 7 keV, while the 3-150 keV flux decreased by a factor of 17. The power spectra were fitted with two broad Lorentzian components, whose characteristic frequencies decreased with the source flux, and whose fractional rms contribution was rather constant. The timing parameters derived can be identified with those observed in other systems. These results show that, although during previous, more luminous, outbursts, a very complex behavior was observed, at low luminosities XTE J1550-564 behaves in a way comparable to most Black-Hole Candidates., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

(abridged version) We report on ten type I X-ray bursts from GX 17+2 in data obtained with the RXTE/PCA in 1996--2000. Three bursts were short in duration (~10 s), whereas the others lasted for ~6-25 min. Five of the long bursts showed evidence for radius expansion of the neutron star photosphere. No correlations o f the burst properties with respect to the persistent X-ray spectral properties are seen, suggesting no correlation with inferred persistent mass accretion rate. The presence of short bursts in GX 17+2 (and similar bright X-ray sources) is not accounted for in the current X-ray bursts theories at the high mass accretion rates encountered in these sources. We find that in contrast to previous suggestions the persistent black-body emission does NOT arise from the same site as the burst emission. The black-body component of the persistent emission is consistent with arising in an expanded boundary layer, as indicated by recent theoretical work. The total persistent flux just before and after the radius expansion bursts is inferred to be up to a factor of 2 higher than the net peak flux of the burst. If both the burst and persistent emission are radiated isotropically, this would imply that the persistent emission is up to a factor of 2 higher than the Eddington luminosity. This is unlikely and we suggest that the persistent luminosity is close to the Eddington luminosity and that the burst emission is (highly) anisotropic. Assuming that the net burst peak fluxes equal the Eddington limit, applying standard burst parameters (1.4 M_sun neutron star, cosmic composition, electron scattering opacity appropriate for high temperatures), and taking into account gravitational redshift and spectral hardening, we derive a distance to GX 17+2 of ~8 kpc, with an uncertainty of up to ~30%., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A; revised considerably with respect to v1, but conclusions remain unchanged; included 4 burst-like events which were previously missed

We have determined an improved position for the luminous persistent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary and atoll source GX 9+1 from archival Chandra X-ray Observatory data. The new position significantly differs from a previously published Chandra position for this source. Based on the revised X-ray position we have identified a new near-infrared (NIR) counterpart to GX 9+1 in Ks-band images obtained with the PANIC and FourStar cameras on the Magellan Baade Telescope. NIR spectra of this Ks=16.5+-0.1 mag star taken with the FIRE spectrograph on the Baade Telescope show a strong Br-gamma emission line, which is a clear signature that we discovered the true NIR counterpart to GX 9+1. The mass donor in GX 9+1 cannot be a late-type giant, as such a star would be brighter than the estimated absolute Ks magnitude of the NIR counterpart. The slope of the dereddened NIR spectrum is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the column density N_H and NIR extinction. Considering the source's distance and X-ray luminosity, we argue that N_H likely lies near the high end of the previously suggested range. If this is indeed the case, the NIR spectrum is consistent with thermal emission from a heated accretion disk, possibly with a contribution from the secondary. In this respect, GX 9+1 is similar to other bright atolls and the Z sources whose NIR spectra do not show the slope that is expected for a dominant contribution from optically thin synchrotron emission from the inner regions of a jet., Accepted for publication in ApJ

The nature of black hole jets at the lowest detectable luminosities remains an open question, largely due to a dearth of observational constraints. Here, we present a new, nearly-simultaneous broadband spectrum of the black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) XTE J1118+480 at an extremely low Eddington ratio (L_x~1e-8.5 L_Edd). Our new spectral energy distribution (SED) includes the radio, near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavebands. XTE J1118 is now the second BHXB at such a low Eddington ratio with a well-sampled SED, providing new constraints on highly sub-Eddington accretion flows and jets, and opening the door for comparison studies. We apply a multi-zone jet model to the new broadband SED, and we compare our results to previous fits to the same source using the same model at 4-5 decades higher luminosity. We find that after a BHXB transitions to the so-called quiescent spectral state, the jet base becomes more compact (by up to an order of magnitude) and slightly cooler (by at least a factor of two). Our preferred model fit indicates that jet particle acceleration is weaker after the transition into quiescence. That is, accelerated non-thermal particles no longer reach high enough Lorentz factors to contribute significant amounts of synchrotron X-ray emission. Instead, the X-ray waveband is dominated by synchrotron self-Compton emission from a population of mildly relativistic electrons with a quasi-thermal velocity distribution associated with the jet base. The corresponding (thermal) synchrotron component emits primarily in the infrared through ultraviolet wavebands. Our results on XTE J1118 are consistent with broadband modeling for A0620-00 and for Sgr A*. The above could therefore represent a canonical baseline geometry for accreting black holes in quiescence. X-ray observations of quiescent X-ray binaries have the potential to provide insight into the structure and the composition of neutron stars. EXO 0748-676 had been actively accreting for over 24 yr before its outburst ceased in late 2008. Subsequent X-ray monitoring revealed a gradual decay of the quiescent thermal emission that can be attributed to cooling of the accretion-heated neutron star crust. In this work, we report on new Chandra and Swift observations that extend the quiescent monitoring to ~5 yr post-outburst. We find that the neutron star temperature remained at ~117 eV between 2009 and 2011, but had decreased to ~110 eV in 2013. This suggests that the crust has not fully cooled yet, which is supported by the lower temperature of ~95 eV that was measured ~4 yr prior to the accretion phase in 1980. Comparing the data to thermal evolution simulations reveals that the apparent lack of cooling between 2009 and 2011 could possibly be a signature of convection driven by phase separation of light and heavy nuclei in the outer layers of the neutron star., Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures. We present a comprehensive study of the total X-ray emission from the colliding galaxy pair NGC2207/IC2163, based on Chandra, Spitzer, and GALEX data. We detect 28 ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), 7 of which were not detected previously due to X-ray variability. Twelve sources show significant long-term variability, with no correlated spectral changes. Seven sources are transient candidates. One ULX coincides with an extremely blue star cluster (B-V = -0.7). We confirm that the global relation between the number and luminosity of ULXs and the integrated star formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy also holds on local scales. We investigate the effects of dust extinction and/or age on the X-ray binary (XRB) population on sub-galactic scales. The distributions of Nx and Lx are peaked at L(IR)/L(NUV)~1, which may be associated with an age of ~10 Myr for the underlying stellar population. We find that ~1/3 of the XRBs are located in close proximity to young star complexes. The luminosity function of the X-ray binaries is consistent with that typical for high-mass X-ray binaries, and appears unaffected by variability. We disentangle and compare the X-ray diffuse spectrum with that of the bright XRBs. The hot interstellar medium dominates the diffuse X-ray emission at E, 24 pages, 11 figures, 11 tables. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. We present Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift observations of the quiescent neutron star in the transient low-mass X-ray binary MAXI J0556-332. Observations of the source made during outburst (with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) reveal tracks in its X-ray color--color and hardness--intensity diagrams that closely resemble those of the neutron-star Z sources, suggesting that MAXI J0556-332 had near- or super-Eddington luminosities for a large part of its ~16 month outburst. A comparison of these diagrams with those of other Z sources suggests a source distance of 46+/-15 kpc. Fits to the quiescent spectra of MAXI J0556-332 with a neutron-star atmosphere model (with or without a power-law component) result in distance estimates of 45+/-3 kpc, for a neutron-star radius of 10 km and a mass of 1.4 Msun. The spectra show the effective surface temperature of the neutron star decreasing monotonically over the first ~500 days of quiescence, except for two observations that were likely affected by enhanced low-level accretion. The temperatures we obtain for the fits that include a power-law (kT_eff=184-308 eV) are much higher than those seen for any other neutron star heated by accretion, while the inferred cooling (e-folding) timescale (~200 days) is similar to other sources. Fits without a power-law yield higher temperatures (kT_eff=190-336 eV) and a shorter e-folding time (~160 days). Our results suggest that the heating of the neutron-star crust in MAXI J0556-332 was considerably more efficient than for other systems, possibly indicating additional or more efficient shallow heat sources in its crust., Comment: Accepted for publication: 2014, ApJ, 795, 131 (13 pages)

We present a detailed study of the 5 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) recently discovered in the bright X-ray transient and black-hole candidate GRS 1739-278 (Borozdin & Trudolyubov 2000) during a Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation taken on 1996 March 31. In total 6.6 ksec of on-source data were obtained, divided in two data sets of 3.4 and 3.2 ksec which were separated by 2.6 ksec. The 5 Hz QPO was only present during the second data set. The QPO increased in strength from below 2% rms amplitude for photon energies below 4 keV to ~5% rms amplitude for energies above 10 keV. The soft QPO photons (below 5 keV) lagged the hard ones (above 10 keV) by almost 1.5 radian. Besides the QPO fundamental, its first overtone was detected. We present an analysis of the high frequency timing properties of the April-May 2000 outburst of the black hole candidate and Galactic microquasar XTE J1550-564, measured with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The rapid X-ray variability we measure is consistent with the source being in either the ``very high'' or ``intermediate'' black hole state. Strong (5-8% rms) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found between 249-276 Hz; this represents the first detection of the same high frequency QPO in subsequent outbursts of a transient black hole candidate. We also present evidence for lower-frequency QPOs at approximately 188 Hz (3.5 sigma, single trial), also reported previously and likely present simultaneously with the higher-frequency QPOs. We analysed all archival data of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636--53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (1490 observations). We found a total of 336 type-I X-ray bursts from this source. In the time-resolved spectra of 69 of these bursts, close to the peak of the burst, the best-fitting blackbody radius shows the sharp increase and decrease that is typical of photospheric radius-expansion (PRE) bursts. We found that in 17 of these 69 PRE bursts, after the touchdown point, the blackbody radius increases again quickly after about 1 second, and from then on the radius decreases slightly or it remains more or less constant. In the other 52 PRE bursts, after touchdown, the radius of the blackbody stays more or less constant for $\sim 2 - 8$ seconds, and after that it increases slowly. Interestingly, those PRE bursts in which the blackbody radius remains more or less constant for $\simmore 2$ seconds show coherent oscillations in the tail of the burst, whereas those PRE bursts in which the blackbody radius changes rapidly after touchdown show no coherent oscillations in the tail of the burst. We found that the distribution of durations of the post touchdown phase between these two groups of PRE bursts is significantly different; the Kolmogorov-Smirnov probability that the two groups of PRE bursts come from the same parent populations is only $3.5 \times 10^{-7}$. This is the first time that the presence of burst oscillations in the tail of X-ray bursts is associated with a systematic behaviour of the spectral parameters in that phase of the bursts. We report results of a BeppoSAX (0.1-200 keV) observation of the Z-type low mass X-ray binary GX 17+2. The source was on the so-called Horizontal and Normal branches. Energy spectra were selected based on the source position in the X-ray hardness-intensity diagram. The continuum could be fairly well described by the sum of a ~0.6 keV blackbody, contributing ~10% of the observed 0.1-200 keV flux, and a Comptonized component, resulting from upscattering of \~1 keV seed photons by an electron cloud with temperature of ~3 keV and optical depth of ~10. Iron K-line and edge were also present at energies 6.7 and 8.5 keV, respectively. In the spectra of the Horizontal branch a hard tail was clearly detected at energies above ~30 keV. It could be fit by a power law of photon index ~2.7, contributing ~8% of the source flux. This component gradually faded as the source moved towards the Normal branch, where it was no longer detectable. We present results from three observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of LMC X-3, obtained while the source was in an extended 'low/hard' state. The data reveal a hard X-ray spectrum which is well fit by a pure power law with photon index Gamma=1.69+/-0.02, with a source luminosity at 50 kpc of 5-16x10^{36}erg/s (2--10 keV). Strong broad-band (0.01-100 Hz) time variability is also observed, with fractional rms amplitude 40+/-4%, plus a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) peak at 0.46+/-0.02 Hz with rms amplitude \~14%. This is the first reported observation in which the full canonical low/hard state behavior (pure hard power law spectrum combined with strong broad-band noise and QPO) for LMC X-3 is seen. We reanalyze several archival RXTE observations of LMC X-3 and derive consistent spectral and timing parameters, and determine the overall luminosity variation between high/soft and low/hard states. We present a study of the complex phase lag behavior of the low-frequency (6 and with harmonics at 3, 12, 18, and possibly at 9 Hz. Not only the Q values and the harmonic content of the two types are different, but also their phase lag behavior. For the first type of QPO, the low energy photons (5 keV) by as much as 1.3 radian. The phase lags of the second type of QPO are more complex. The soft photons (5 keV) by as much as 1.0 radian. However, the soft photons of the 6 Hz QPO precede the hard ones by as much as 0.6 radian. This means that different harmonics of this type of QPO have different signs for their phase lags. This unusual behavior is hard to explain when the lags are due to light-travel-time differences between the photons at different energies, e.g., in a Comptonizing region surrounding the area where the QPOs are formed., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 29 September 1999

We report the discovery of a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of the dipping and eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676. The QPO had a frequency between 0.58 and 2.44 Hz changing on time scales of a few days, an rms amplitude between 8% and 12%, and was detected in the persistent emission, during dips and during type I X-ray bursts. During one observation, when the count rate was a factor 2 to 3 higher than otherwise, the QPO was not detected. The strength of the QPO did not significantly depend on photon energy, and is consistent with being the same in the persistent emission, both during and outside the dips, and during type I X-ray bursts. Frequency shifts were observed during three of the four X-ray bursts. We argue that the QPO is produced by the same mechanism as the QPO recently found by Jonker et al. (1999) in 4U 1323-62. Although the exact mechanism is not clear, it is most likely related to the high inclination of both systems. An orbiting structure in the accretion disc that modulates the radiation from the central source seems the most promising mechanism., 9 pages including 4 figures. We report the discovery of a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at 61.0+/-1.7 Hz with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer in the low-mass X-ray binary and persistently bright atoll source GX 13+1 (4U 1811-17). The QPO had an rms amplitude of 1.7+/-0.2 % (2-13.0 keV) and a FWHM of 15.9+/-4.2 Hz. Its frequency increased with count rate and its amplitude increased with photon energy. In addition a peaked noise component was found with a cut-off frequency around 2 Hz, a power law index of around -4, and an rms amplitude of ~1.8 %, probably the well known atoll source high frequency noise. It was only found when the QPO was detected. Very low frequency noise was present with a power law index of ~1, and an rms amplitude of ~4 %. A second observation showed similar variability components. In the X-ray color-color diagram the source did not trace out the usual banana branch, but showed a two branched structure. This is the first detection of a QPO in one of the four persistently bright atoll sources in the galactic bulge. We argue that the QPO properties indicate that it is the same phenomenon as the horizontal branch oscillations (HBO) in Z sources. That HBO might turn up in the persistently bright atoll sources was previously suggested on the basis of the magnetospheric beat frequency model for HBO. We discuss the properties of the new phenomenon within the framework of this model.

During observations with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer from 1997 June 31 to July 3 we discovered two simultaneous kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) near 500 and 860 Hz in the low-mass X-ray binary and Z source Cygnus X-2. In the X-ray color-color diagram and hardness intensity diagram (HID), a clear Z track was traced out, which shifted in the HID within 1 day to higher count rates at the end of the observation. Z track shifts are well known to occur in Cyg X-2; our observation for the first time catches the source in the act. A single kHz QPO peak was detected at the left end of the horizontal branch (HB) of the Z track, with a frequency of 731 +/- 20 Hz and an amplitude of 4.7(-0.6)(+0.8)% rms in the energy band 5.0-60 keV. Further to the right on the HB, at somewhat higher count rates, an additional peak at 532 +/- 43 Hz was detected with an rms amplitude of 3.0(-0.7)(+1.0). When the source moved down the HB, thus when the inferred mass accretion rate increased, the frequency of the higher frequency QPO increased to 839 +/- 13 Hz, and its amplitude decreased to 3.5(-0.3)(+0.4)% rms. The higher frequency QPO was also detected on the upper normal branch (NB) with an rms amplitude of 1.8(-0.4)(+0.6)% and a frequency of 1007 +/- 15 Hz; its peak width did not show a clear correlation with inferred mass accretion rate. The lower frequency QPO was most of the time undetectable, with typical upper limits of 2% rms; no conclusion on how this QPO behaved with mass accretion rate can be drawn. If the peak separation between the QPOs is the neutron star spin frequency (as required in some beat-frequency models), then the neutron star spin period is 2.9 +/- 0.2 ms (346 +/- 29 Hz). This discovery makes Cyg X-2 the fourth Z source that displays kHz QPOs. The properties of the kHz QPOs in Cyg X-2 are similar to those of other Z sources. Simultaneous with the kHz QPOs, the well-known horizontal-branch QPOs (HBOs) were visible in the power spectra. At the left end of the HB, the second harmonic of the HBO was also detected. We also detected six small X-ray bursts. No periodic oscillations or QPOs were detected in any of them, with typical upper limits of 6%-8% rms.

We report and study the outburst of a new transient X-ray binary (XRB) in Terzan 5, the third detected in this globular cluster, Swift J174805.3-244637 or Terzan 5 X-3. We find clear spectral hardening in Swift/XRT data during the outburst rise to the hard state, thanks to our early coverage (starting at L_X ~ 4x10^{34} ergs/s) of the outburst. This hardening appears to be due to the decline in relative strength of a soft thermal component from the surface of the neutron star (NS) during the rise. We identify a {Type I X-ray burst} in Swift/XRT data with a long (16 s) decay time, indicative of {hydrogen burning on the surface of the} NS. We use Swift/BAT, Maxi/GSC, Chandra/ACIS, and Swift/XRT data to study the spectral changes during the outburst, identifying a clear hard-to-soft state transition. We use a Chandra/ACIS observation during outburst to identify the transient's position. Seven archival Chandra/ACIS observations show evidence for variations in Terzan 5 X-3's non-thermal component, but not the thermal component, during quiescence. The inferred long-term time-averaged mass accretion rate, from the quiescent thermal luminosity, suggests that if this outburst is typical and only slow cooling processes are active in the neutron star core, such outbursts should recur every ~10 years., ApJ in press

MAXI J1659-152 was discovered on 2010 September 25 as a new X-ray transient, initially identified as a gamma-ray burst, but was later shown to be a new X-ray binary with a black hole as the most likely compact object. Dips in the X-ray light curves have revealed that MAXI J1659-152 is the shortest period black hole candidate identified to date. Here we present the results of a large observing campaign at radio, sub-millimeter, near-infrared (nIR), optical and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. We have combined this very rich data set with the available X-ray observations to compile a broadband picture of the evolution of this outburst. We have performed broadband spectral modeling, demonstrating the presence of a spectral break at radio frequencies and a relationship between the radio spectrum and X-ray states. Also, we have determined physical parameters of the accretion disk and put them into context with respect to the other parameters of the binary system. Finally, we have investigated the radio-X-ray and nIR/optical/UV-X-ray correlations up to ~3 years after the outburst onset to examine the link between the jet and the accretion disk, and found that there is no significant jet contribution to the nIR emission when the source is in the soft or intermediate X-ray spectral state, consistent with our detection of the jet break at radio frequencies during these states., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS after minor revisions

The quasi-persistent neutron star low-mass X-ray binary MXB 1659-29 went into quiescence in 2001, and we have followed its quiescent X-ray evolution since. Observations over the first 4 years showed a rapid drop in flux and temperature of the neutron star atmosphere, interpreted as cooling of the neutron star crust which had been heated during the 2.5 year outburst. However, observations taken approximately 1400 and 2400 days into quiescence were consistent with each other, suggesting the crust had reached thermal equilibrium with the core. Here we present a new Chandra observation of MXB 1659-29 taken 11 years into quiescence and 4 years since the last Chandra observation. This new observation shows an unexpected factor of ~3 drop in count rate and change in spectral shape since the last observation, which cannot be explained simply by continued cooling. Two possible scenarios are that either the neutron star temperature has remained unchanged and there has been an increase in the column density, or, alternatively the neutron star temperature has dropped precipitously and the spectrum is now dominated by a power-law component. The first scenario may be possible given that MXB 1659-29 is a near edge-on system, and an increase in column density could be due to build-up of material in, and a thickening of, a truncated accretion disk during quiescence. But, a large change in disk height may not be plausible if standard accretion disk theory holds during quiescence. MAXI J1659-152 is a bright X-ray transient black-hole candidate binary system discovered in September 2010. We report here on MAXI, RXTE, Swift, and XMM-Newton observations during its 2010/2011 outburst. We find that during the first one and a half week of the outburst the X-ray light curves display drops in intensity at regular intervals, which we interpret as absorption dips. About three weeks into the outbursts, again drops in intensity are seen. These dips have, however, a spectral behaviour opposite to that of the absorption dips, and are related to fast spectral state changes (hence referred to as transition dips). The absorption dips recur with a period of 2.414+/-0.005 hrs, which we interpret as the orbital period of the system. This implies that MAXI J1659-152 is the shortest period black-hole candidate binary known to date. The inclination of the accretion disk with respect to the line of sight is estimated to be 65-80 degrees. We propose the companion to the black-hole candidate to be close to an M5 dwarf star, with a mass and radius of about 0.15-0.25 M_sun and 0.2-0.25 R_sun, respectively. We derive that the companion had an initial mass of about 1.5 M_sun, which evolved to its current mass in about 5-6 billion years. The system is rather compact (orbital separation of larger than ~1.33 R_sun), and is located at a distance of 8.6+/-3.7 kpc, with a height above the Galactic plane of 2.4+/-1.0 kpc. The characteristics of short orbital period and high Galactic scale height are shared with two other transient black-hole candidate X-ray binaries, i.e., XTE J1118+480 and Swift J1735.5-0127. The transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary and 11 Hz X-ray pulsar IGR J17480-2446 in the globular cluster Terzan 5 exhibited an 11-week accretion outburst in 2010. Chandra observations performed within five months after the end of the outburst revealed evidence that the crust of the neutron star became substantially heated during the accretion episode and was subsequently cooling in quiescence. This provides the rare opportunity to probe the structure and composition of the crust. Here, we report on new Chandra observations of Terzan 5 that extend the monitoring to ~2.2 yr into quiescence. We find that the thermal flux and neutron star temperature have continued to decrease, but remain significantly above the values that were measured before the 2010 accretion phase. This suggests that the crust has not thermally relaxed yet, and may continue to cool. Such behavior is difficult to explain within our current understanding of heating and cooling of transiently accreting neutron stars. Alternatively, the quiescent emission may have settled at a higher observed equilibrium level (for the same interior temperature), in which case the neutron star crust may have fully cooled., Comment: Accepted to ApJ without revision. Recent work on jets and disk winds in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) suggests that they are to a large extent mutually exclusive, with jets observed in spectrally hard states and disk winds observed in spectrally soft states. In this paper we use existing literature on jets and disk winds in the luminous neutron star (NS) LMXB GX 13+1, in combination with archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data, to show that this source is likely able to produce jets and disk winds simultaneously. We find that jets and disk winds occur in the same location on the source's track in its X-ray color-color diagram. A further study of literature on other luminous LMXBs reveals that this behavior is more common, with indications for simultaneous jets and disk winds in the black hole LMXBs V404 Cyg and GRS 1915+105 and the NS LMXBs Sco X-1 and Cir X-1. For the three sources for which we have the necessary spectral information, we find that the simultaneous jets/winds all occur in their spectrally hardest states. Our findings indicate that in LMXBs with luminosities above a few tens of percent of the Eddington luminosity, jets and disk winds are not mutually exclusive, and that the presence of disk winds does not necessarily result in jet suppression., Updated to match published version (2016, ApJ, 830, L5)

V404 Cygni was discovered in 1989 by the $Ginga$ X-ray satellite during its only previously observed X-ray outburst and soon after confirmed as a black hole binary. On June 15, 2015, the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggered on a new outburst of V404 Cygni. We present 13 days of GBM observations of this outburst including Earth occultation flux measurements, spectral and temporal analysis. The Earth occultation fluxes reached 30 Crab with detected emission to 100 keV and determined, via hardness ratios, that the source was in a hard state. At high luminosity, spectral analysis between 8 and 300 keV showed that the electron temperature decreased with increasing luminosity. This is expected if the protons and electrons are in thermal equilibrium during an outburst with the electrons cooled by the Compton scattering of softer seed photons from the disk. However, the implied seed photon temperatures are unusually high, suggesting a contribution from another source, such as the jet. No evidence of state transitions is seen during this time period. The temporal analysis reveals power spectra that can be modeled with two or three strong, broad Lorentzians, similar to the power spectra of black hole binaries in their hard state.

During its 2005 outburst, GRO J1655-40 was observed at high spectral resolution with the Chandra HETGS, revealing a spectrum rich with blueshifted absorption lines indicative of an accretion disk wind -- apparently too hot, too dense, and too close to the black hole to be driven by radiation pressure or thermal pressure (Miller et al.). But this exotic wind represents just one piece of the puzzle in this outburst, as its presence coincides with an extremely soft and curved X-ray continuum spectrum, remarkable X-ray variability (Uttley & Klein-Wolt), and a bright, unexpected optical/infrared blackbody component that varies on the orbital period. Focusing on the X-ray continuum and the optical/infrared/UV spectral energy distribution, we argue that the unusual features of this "hypersoft state" are natural consequences of a super-Eddington Compton-thick wind from the disk: the optical/infrared blackbody represents the cool photosphere of a dense, extended outflow, while the X-ray emission is explained as Compton scattering by the relatively cool, optically thick wind. This wind obscures the intrinsic luminosity of the inner disk, which we suggest may have been at or above the Eddington limit., 15 pages, 5 figures. The ultracompact X-ray binary 4U 1820-30 is well known for its ~170-d superorbital modulation in X-ray flux and spectrum, and the exclusiveness of bursting behavior to the low hard 'island' state. In May-June 2009, there was an exceptionally long 51-d low state. This state was well covered by X-ray observations and 12 bursts were detected, 9 with the high-throughput RXTE. We investigate the character of these X-ray bursts and find an interesting change in their photospheric expansion behavior. At the lowest inferred mass accretion rates, this expansion becomes very large in 4 bursts and reaches the so-called superexpansion regime. We speculate that this is due to the geometry of the inner accretion flow being spherical and a decreasing accretion rate: when the flow geometry nearest to the neutron star is spherical and the accretion rate is low, the ram pressure of the accretion disk may become too low to counteract that of the photospheric expansion. In effect, this may provide a novel means to probe the accretion flow. Additionally, we observe a peculiar effect: the well-known cessation of X-ray bursts in the high state is too quick to be consistent with a transition to stable helium burning. Z sources are bright neutron-star X-ray binaries, accreting at around the Eddington limit. We analyze the 68 RXTE observations (270 ks) of Sco-like Z source GX 17+2 made between 1999 October 3-12, covering a complete Z track. We create and fit color-resolved spectra with a model consisting of a thermal multicolor disk, a single-temperature-blackbody boundary layer and a weak Comptonized component. We find that, similar to what was observed for XTE J1701-462 in its Sco-like Z phase, the branches of GX 17+2 can be explained by three processes operating at a constant accretion rate Mdot into the disk: increase of Comptonization up the horizontal branch, transition from a standard thin disk to a slim disk up the normal branch, and temporary fast decrease of the inner disk radius up the flaring branch. We also model the Comptonization in an empirically self-consistent way, with its seed photons tied to the thermal disk component and corrected for to recover the pre-Comptonized thermal disk emission. This allows us to show a constant Mdot along the entire Z track based on the thermal disk component. We also measure the upper kHz QPO frequency and find it to depend on the apparent inner disk radius R_in (prior to Compton scattering) approximately as frequency \propto R_in^(-3/2), supporting the idenfitication of it as the Keplerian frequency at R_in. The horizontal branch oscillation is probably related to the dynamics in the inner disk as well, as both its frequency and R_in vary significantly on the horizontal branch but become relatively constant on the normal branch., 17 pages, 14 figures. We report on the results of a four-year long X-ray monitoring campaign of the central 1.2 square degrees of our Galaxy, performed with Chandra and XMM-Newton between 2005 and 2008. Our study focuses on the properties of transient X-ray sources that reach 2-10 keV luminosities of >1E34 erg/s for an assumed distance of 8 kpc. There are 17 known X-ray transients within the field of view of our campaign, eight of which were detected in outburst during our observations: the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries GRS 1741-2853, AX J1745.6-2901, SAX J1747.0-2853, KS 1741-293 and GRO J1744-28, and the unclassified X-ray transients XMM J174457-2850.3, CXOGC J174535.5-290124 and CXOGC J174541.0-290014. We present their X-ray spectra and flux evolution during our campaign, and discuss these results in light of their historic activity. Our main results include the detection of two thermonuclear X-ray bursts from SAX J1747.0-2853 that were separated by an unusually short time interval of 3.8 min. We detected a thermonuclear X-ray burst and a ~1600-s X-ray eclipse from AX J1745.6-2901. Both XMM J174457-2850.3 and GRO J1744-28 displayed weak X-ray activity above their quiescent levels that is indicative of low-level accretion. In addition to the eight known X-ray transients, we discovered a previously unknown X-ray source that we designate XMMU J174654.1-291542. Based on its X-ray properties and the possible association with an infrared source, we tentatively classify this object as a cataclysmic variable. No new transients were found during our campaign, reinforcing the conclusion of previous authors that most X-ray transients recurring on a time scale of less than a decade have now been identified near the Galactic centre., 25 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, A&A in press, corrected an error in one source name (XMMU J174654.1-291542)

During its 2005 outburst, GRO J1655-40 was observed twice with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer; the second observation revealed a spectrum rich with ionized absorption lines from elements ranging from O to Ni (Miller et al. 2006a, 2008; Kallman et al. 2009), indicative of an outflow too dense and too ionized to be driven by radiation or thermal pressure. To date, this spectrum is the only definitive evidence of an ionized wind driven off the accretion disk by magnetic processes in a black hole X-ray binary. Here we present our detailed spectral analysis of the first Chandra observation, nearly three weeks earlier, in which the only signature of the wind is the Fe XXVI absorption line. Comparing the broadband X-ray spectra via photoionization models, we argue that the differences in the Chandra spectra cannot possibly be explained by the changes in the ionizing spectrum, which implies that the properties of the wind cannot be constant throughout the outburst. We explore physical scenarios for the changes in the wind, which we suggest may begin as a hybrid MHD/thermal wind, but evolves over the course of weeks into two distinct outflows with different properties. We report on 6 RXTE observations taken during the 2010 outburst of the 11 Hz accreting pulsar IGR J17480-2446 located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. During these observations we find power spectra which resemble those seen in Z-type high-luminosity neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, with a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the 35-50 Hz range simultaneous with a kHz QPO and broad band noise. Using well known frequency-frequency correlations, we identify the 35-50 Hz QPOs as the horizontal branch oscillations (HBO), which were previously suggested to be due to Lense-Thirring precession. As IGR J17480-2446 spins more than an order of magnitude more slowly than any of the other neutron stars where these QPOs were found, this QPO can not be explained by frame dragging. By extension, this casts doubt on the Lense-Thirring precession model for other low-frequency QPOs in neutron-star and perhaps even black-hole systems.

We report on the analysis of all 65 pointed Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the recently discovered soft X-ray transient MAXI J1659-152 (initially referred to as GRB 100925A). The source was studied in terms of its evolution through the hardness-intensity diagram (HID) as well as its X-ray variability properties. MAXI J1659-152 traced out an anti-clockwise loop in the HID, which is commonly seen in transient low-mass X-ray binaries. The variability properties of the source, in particular the detection of type-B and type-C low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations, and the way they evolve along the HID track, indicate that MAXI J1659-152 is a black hole candidate. The spectral and variability properties of MAXI J1659-152 imply that the source was observed in the hard and soft intermediate states during the RXTE observations, with several transitions between these two states., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report the detection of 15 X-ray bursts with RXTE and Swift observations of the peculiar X-ray binary Circinus X-1 during its May 2010 X-ray re-brightening. These are the first X-ray bursts observed from the source after the initial discovery by Tennant and collaborators, twenty-five years ago. By studying their spectral evolution, we firmly identify nine of the bursts as type I (thermonuclear) X-ray bursts. We obtain an arcsecond location of the bursts that confirms once and for all the identification of Cir X-1 as a type I X-ray burst source, and therefore as a low magnetic field accreting neutron star. The first five bursts observed by RXTE are weak and show approximately symmetric light curves, without detectable signs of cooling along the burst decay. We discuss their possible nature. We present an analysis of the broad-band spectra of 4U~1705--44 obtained with {\it Suzaku} in 2006--2008 and by {\it BeppoSAX} in 2000. We report on an analysis of RXTE data of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) XTE J1701-462, obtained during its 2006-2007 outburst. The X-ray properties of the source changed between those of various types of NS-LMXB subclasses. At high luminosities the source switched between two types of Z source behavior and at low luminosities we observed a transition from Z source to atoll source behavior. These transitions between subclasses primarily manifest themselves as changes in the shapes of the tracks in X-ray color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams, but they are accompanied by changes in the kHz quasi-periodic oscillations, broad-band variability, burst behavior, and/or X-ray spectra. We find that the low-energy X-ray flux is a good parameter to track the gradual evolution of the tracks in color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams, allowing us to resolve the evolution of the source in greater detail than before and relate the observed properties to other NS-LMXBs. We further find that during the transition from Z to atoll, characteristic behavior known as the atoll upper banana can equivalently be described as the final stage of a weakening Z source flaring branch, thereby blurring the line between the two subclasses. Our findings strongly suggest that the wide variety in behavior observed in NS-LXMBs with different luminosities can be linked through changes in a single variable parameter, namely the mass accretion rate, without the need for additional differences in the neutron star parameters or viewing angle. We briefly discuss the implications of our findings for the spectral changes observed in NS LMXBs and suggest that, contrary to what is often assumed, the position along the color-color tracks of Z sources is not determined by the instantaneous mass accretion rate., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome. 13 pages, 8 figures

In this Paper we report on radio (VLA and ATCA) and X-ray (RXTE, Chandra and Swift) observations of the outburst decay of the transient black hole candidate H1743-322 in early 2008. We find that the X-ray light curve followed an exponential decay, leveling off towards its quiescent level. The exponential decay timescale is ~4 days and the quiescent flux corresponds to a luminosity of 3x10^32 (d/7.5 kpc)^2 erg/s. This together with the relation between quiescent X-ray luminosity and orbital period reported in the literature suggests that H1743-322 has an orbital period longer than ~10 hours. Both the radio and X-ray light curve show evidence for flares. The radio - X-ray correlation can be well described by a power-law with index ~0.18. This is much lower than the index of 0.6-0.7 found for the decay of several black hole transients before. The radio spectral index measured during one of the radio flares while the source is in the low-hard state, is -0.5+-0.15, which indicates that the radio emission is optically thin. This is unlike what has been found before in black hole sources in the low-hard state. We attribute the radio flares and the low index for the radio - X-ray correlation to the presence of shocks downstream the jet flow, triggered by ejection events earlier in the outburst. We find no evidence for a change in X-ray power law spectral index during the decay, although the relatively high extinction of N_H =2.3x10^22 cm^-2 limits the detected number of soft photons and thus the accuracy of the spectral fits., 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We have discovered a triple-peaked X-ray burst from the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1636-53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). This is the first triple-peaked burst reported from any LMXB using RXTE, and it is only the second burst of this kind observed from any source. (The previous one was also from 4U 1636-53, and was observed with EXOSAT.) From fits to time-resolved spectra, we find that this is not a radius-expansion burst, and that the same triple-peaked pattern seen in the X-ray light curve is also present in the bolometric light curve of the burst. Similar to what was previously observed in double-peaked bursts from this source, the radius of the emitting area increases steadily during the burst, with short periods in between during which the radius remains more or less constant. The temperature first increases steeply, and then decreases across the burst also showing three peaks. The first and last peak in the temperature profile occur, respectively, significantly before and significantly after the first and last peaks in the X-ray and bolometric light curves. We found no significant oscillations during this burst. This triple-peaked burst, as well as the one observed with EXOSAT and the double-peak bursts in this source, all took place when 4U 1636-53 occupied a relatively narrow region in the colour-colour diagram, corresponding to a relatively high (inferred) mass-accretion rate. We report on X-ray observations of the black-hole candidate GX 339-4 during its 2006/2007 outburst. The hardness-intensity diagram of all RXTE/PCA data combined shows a q-shaped track similar to that observed in previous outbursts. The evolution through the HID suggests that in the early phase of the outburst the source underwent a sequence of state transitions, from the hard to the soft state, which is supported by our timing analysis. Broadband (4-200 keV) spectra, fitted with an exponentially cutoff powerlaw, show that the hard spectral component steepens during the transition from the hard to the soft state. The high-energy cutoff decreased monotonically from 120 to 60 keV during the brightening of the hard state, but increased again to 100 keV during the softening in the hard intermediate state. In the short-lived soft intermediate state the cutoff energy was ~ 130 keV, but was no longer detected in the soft state. This is one of the first times that the high-energy cut-off has been followed in such detail across several state transitions. We find that in comparison to several other spectral parameters, the cut-off energy changes more rapidly, just like the timing properties. The observed behaviour of the high energy cutoff of GX 339-4 is also similar to that observed with RXTE-INTEGRAL-Swift during the 2005 outburst of GRO J1655-40. We report the discovery of one-hour long tails on the few-minutes long X-ray bursts from the `clocked burster' GS 1826-24. We propose that the tails are due to enduring thermal radiation from the neutron star envelope. The enduring emission can be explained by cooling of deeper NS layers which were heated up through inward conduction of heat produced in the thermonuclear shell flash responsible for the burst. Similar, though somewhat shorter, tails are seen in bursts from EXO 0748-676 and 4U 1728-34. Only a small amount of cooling is detected in all these tails. This is either due to compton up scattering of the tail photons or, more likely, to a NS that is already fairly hot due to other, stable, nuclear processes., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 12 pages, 14 figures

We present Suzaku observations of the Galactic black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127 in the low-hard state. The broadband coverage of Suzaku enables us to detect the source over the energy range 0.6 -- 250 keV. The broadband spectrum (2 -- 250 keV) is found to be consistent with a simple power-law (gamma \sim 1.63). In agreement with previous observations of this system, a significant excess of soft X-ray flux is detected consistent with the presence of a cool accretion disc. Estimates of the disc inner radius infer a value consistent with the ISCO (R_{in} \lesssim 6 R_g, for certain values of, e.g. N_H, i), although we cannot conclusively rule out the presence of an accretion disc truncated at larger radii (R_{in} \sim 10 - 50 R_g). A weak, relativistically-broadened iron line is also detected, in addition to disc reflection at higher energy. However, the iron-K line profile favours an inner radius larger than the ISCO (R _{in} \sim 10 - 20 R_g). GRS 1915+105 harbors one of the most massive known stellar black holes in the Galaxy. In May 2007, we observed GRS 1915+105 for 117 ksec in the low/hard state using Suzaku. We collected and analyzed the data with the HXD/PIN and XIS cameras spanning the energy range from 2.3-55 keV. Fits to the spectra with simple models reveal strong disk reflection through an Fe K emission line and a Compton back-scattering hump. We report constraints on the spin parameter of the black hole in GRS 1915+105 using relativistic disk reflection models. The model for the soft X-ray spectrum (i.e. < 10 keV) suggests a/M = 0.56(2) and excludes zero spin at the 4 sigma level of confidence. The model for the full broadband spectrum suggests that the spin may be higher, a/M = 0.98(1) (1 sigma confidence), and again excludes zero spin at the 2 sigma level of confidence.
