Abstract

The Gilded Age (the period from about 1870-1900) was a tumultuous time for organized labor in the U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor, only 51 establishments went on strike in 1879. In 1880, the number of establishments on strike increased almost 16 times to 813. Further, in 1881 the number of establishments on strike more than tripled again, with 2,928 strikes counted. As the labor movement continued to grow in size and intensity, it also became more heterogeneous with more women becoming part of strike actions. In 1880, only four percent of all strikers were women, but by 1886 women made up nearly 15 percent of all strikers. Little is known about how women's participation in the labor movement during this period might have affected movement outcomes. On the one hand, women might have hindered the movement, either by delegitimizing it or by causing gender-based factions. On the other hand, women's participation may have been helpful to the labor movement, by bringing in new standpoints, tactics, resources, militant energy, or networks. In this paper, we ask: How did the participation of women in Gilded Age strikes affect movement success? We employ a uniquely rich and comprehensive historical data source to test the impact of women's participation on the success of every strike that took place in the Northeastern United States between 1881 and 1886 (N=2,930). In general, we find the relationship to be nonlinear. Over the lower range of female striker composition, women in strikes were detrimental to strike success. We argue that when the proportion of women is relatively small, negative cultural attitudes towards women and men's subsequent exclusion of them serve to undermine solidarity, thus weakening strike actions. However, when women begin to approach proportional parity with men, we find that women's participation actually increased the chances of strike success. We suggest that this is because when men and women made up similar proportions of a strike, women were more likely to participate, and be taken seriously by their male counterparts because organizing was becoming increasingly industry (rather than trade) and mixed gender (rather than exclusively male) so women's numbers mattered much more. Abstract

Numerous studies show that political conservatives report higher levels of symbolic racism than political moderates and liberals. Although previous studies of political orientation and political attitudes are influential and important, it is unclear whether negative feelings towards racial minorities vary across theoretically relevant subgroups of political conservatives. This paper attempts to add to the literature by examining whether the effect of political conservatism on symbolic racism varies according to experiences with economic hardship among whites. Using data from the 2008 Cooperative Campaign Analysis Project (CCAP) we measure the effect of economic hardship on the relationships of conservatism and symbolic racism. Results indicate that, overall political conservatives tend to have less accepting attitudes towards Blacks than their more moderate and liberal counterparts. However, the effect of economic hardship is moderated by political attitudes: experiencing economic hardship amplifies symbolic racist attitudes among conservatives, but attenuates these attitudes among liberals. Abstract

Extant literature suggests that becoming employed promotes mental health. Although this body of work has made significant contributions to our understanding of socioeconomic variations in mental health, there may be conditions under which the usual mental health benefits of employment are attenuated or perhaps reversed. We ask two questions: Does becoming employed improve the mental health of low-income women with children? Is this relationship moderated or attenuated by employment conflicts with childcare arrangements? We find that low-income urban women with children who gained employment reported fewer symptoms of distress from baseline to follow-up than respondents who remained unemployed. We also find that respondents who gained employment that did not conflict with childcare also exhibited more favorable mental health changes than women who remained unemployed. Conversely, those who found employment that did conflict with childcare arrangements exhibited poorer mental health changes than those who remained unemployed. These findings suggest that valuing the benefits of paid work over unpaid work is an oversimplification, and that the emphasis of placing poor mothers into paid work might be misguided. In the present thesis, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight massspectroscopy (MALDI-MS) and size-exclusion chromatography incombination with off-line MALDI-MS (SEC/MALDI-MS) have beenapplied successfully to the analysis of wood and pulpcomponents. The carbohydrate compositions of pulp and holocellulosesamples, as well as of isolated hemicellulose preparations,were determined employing enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequentanalysis of the saccharides released by CZE. SEC/MALDI-MS was employed to characterize the molar massesand molar mass distributions of isolated hemicelluloses andlignins. The samples were first separated using SEC intofractions each containing components exhibiting a narrow rangeof molar masses and the average molar mass of each suchfraction subsequently determined by MALDI-MS. The molar massparameters for the samples were thencalculated on the basis ofthe SEC distribution curves and MALDI-MS spectra. The distribution of 4-O-methylglucuronic acid residues along thepolysaccharide chains of xylans isolated from various woodspecies was examined employing MALDI-MS analysis of theoligosaccharide mixtures obtained by partial acid hydrolysis.In the case of all softwood xylans examined, the major portionof these residues were distributed regularly along the polymer;whereas the 4-O-methylglucuronic acid residues in the hardwood xylansexamined were found to be distributed irregularly. Furthersupport for these experimental findings was obtained bycomputer-assisted simulation of the distribution patterns ofthe molar masses of oligosaccharides derived frompolysaccharides with the postulated distributions of uronicacid residues. Abstract

The effect of conventional ploughing, mulching, and direct drilling on the soil organic C (soil Corg) contents through the soil profile and on total soil Corgstocks (0–45 cm) was investigated at five different German sites. All sites showed similar results: after 10–13 years, soil Corgcontents in the surface soil (0–10 cm) were 15–71% and 33–42% higher under direct drilling and mulching, respectively, than under ploughing (8–18 g kg−1). Under ploughing, the soil Corgcontents were distributed homogenously through the soil profile. Either mulching or direct drilling resulted in 3–28% higher soil Corgstocks than ploughing (49–116 t ha−1). However, the tillage management was no significant factor since the sites showed the effects to different extents but were the mathematical replications. Five to six years later, trends and values were similar. We concluded that the main effect of mulching or direct drilling was the stratification with higher soil Corgcontents in the surface soil. Since this is a positive means for soil protection, we suggested that the use of mulching or direct drilling can contribute to a sustainable soil management in crop rotations with sugar beet which are characterized by a strong physical impact on the soil during harvest. Research on women's experiences with work schedules and flexibility tends to focus on professional women in high-paying careers, despite women's far greater prevalence in low-wage jobs. This paper seeks to contribute to our understanding of the work-hours problems faced by women precariously employed in low-wage jobs by addressing how work-on-demand scheduling and other features of part-time labour in the neoliberal economy limit women's ability to make ends meet. Using data from 17 in-depth interviews, we identify four themes - unpredictable schedules, inadequate hours, time theft and punishment-and-control via hours-reduction - and the problems they present. Results suggest that much-championed flexible work policies that seek to encourage women's career advancement may have little bearing on the work-hours dilemmas faced by low-wage women workers. We conclude that social change efforts need to encompass work policies geared to low-wage workers, such as guaranteed minimum hours and increases in the minimum wage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ABSTRACTMultidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens are an increasing threat to public health, and lytic bacteriophages have reemerged as a potential therapeutic option. In this work, we isolated and assembled a five-member cocktail of wild phages against Acinetobacter baumanniiand demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in a mouse full-thickness dorsal infected wound model. The cocktail lowers the bioburden in the wound, prevents the spread of infection and necrosis to surrounding tissue, and decreases infection-associated morbidity. Interestingly, this effective cocktail is composed of four phages that do not kill the parent strain of the infection and one phage that simply delays bacterial growth in vitrovia a strong but incomplete selection event. The cocktail here appears to function in a combinatorial manner, as one constituent phage targets capsulated A. baumanniibacteria and selects for loss of receptor, shifting the population to an uncapsulated state that is then sensitized to the remaining four phages in the cocktail. Additionally, capsule is a known virulence factor for A. baumannii, and we demonstrated that the emergent uncapsulated bacteria are avirulent in a Galleria mellonellamodel. These results highlight the importance of anticipating population changes during phage therapy and designing intelligent cocktails to control emergent strains, as well as the benefits of using phages that target virulence factors. Because of the efficacy of this cocktail isolated from a limited environmental pool, we have established a pipeline for developing new phage therapeutics against additional clinically relevant multidrug-resistant pathogens by using environmental phages sourced from around the globe.

Abstract

Background: Ceftriaxone is a commonly utilized antibiotic for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI) despite the limited literature supporting its use. Opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship (ASP), including IV-to-PO conversions and de-escalation of therapy, are often missed in the hospital setting. Objective: The study reported here describes the utilization of ceftriaxone in patients admitted to the hospital and treated for UTIs in a large health system, focusing on opportunities for IV-to-PO conversion of antibiotic therapy. Methods: This was a multi-center, retrospective, descriptive study conducted in a large health system. Patients admitted from January 2019 to July 2019 were included for analysis if they were 18 years or older at admission, diagnosed with acute cystitis, acute pyelonephritis, or unspecified UTI, and received two or more doses of ceftriaxone. The primary outcome was to evaluate the percentage of patients who were eligible for conversion from IV ceftriaxone to oral antibiotics while admitted to the hospital based on the defined criteria for automatic pharmacist conversion in the health system. Percentage of urine cultures with susceptibility to cefazolin, the duration of antibiotic therapy in the hospital, and an evaluation of oral antibiotics prescribed at discharge were also recorded. Results: A total of 300 patients were included; 88% met the pre-specified criteria for IV-to-PO conversion, but only 12% were converted from IV-to-PO antibiotics during hospitalization. Approximately 65% of patients remained on IV ceftriaxone until discharge, at which time they were converted to a PO antibiotic, most commonly fluoroquinolones followed by third-generation cephalosporins. Conclusion: Patients admitted to the hospital and receiving treatment with ceftriaxone for UTI were infrequently converted to oral therapy prior to discharge despite meeting criteria for automatic pharmacist IV-to-PO conversion. Findings highlight opportunities to contribute to antimicrobial stewardship initiatives across the health system and the importance of tracking and reporting results to frontline providers.
