105. Digital Intermediates for Film and Video

Abstract

The Digital Intermediate process (DI), or conversion of film to digital bits and then back to film again, has great potential to revolutionize the postproduction process. The skill set to photochemically process a movie and pop it into a canister for the postal service to send around to all of the movie houses and the skill set to digitally master and create a file that is distributed globally via the Internet and satellites are completely different. One of these entirely new processes is that of the digital intermediate. The DI has tremendous advantages, ranging from improved quality (first'print'is as good as the last) to cost savings (no re-mastering) to digital distribution (bits and bytes: no film in canisters). The DI influences everything from on set production to the delivery of content to consumers and everything in between. Digital Intermediates for Film and Video teaches the fundamental concepts and workflow of the digital intermediate process. Covers basics of film first, and then introduces the digital world--including a tutorial on digital images, asset management, online editing, color correction, restoration, film and video output, mastering and quality control. 111. Religious Participation Among Older Black Caribbeans in the United States.

Abstract

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlates of religious participation among older Black Caribbeans. Methods. Data from the older Black Caribbean subsample of the National Survey of American Life were used to examine selected measures of organizational, nonorganizational, and subjective religious participation. Results. The findings indicated important demographic differences in the correlates of religious participation among older Black Caribbeans. In particular, gender, marital status, income, immigration status, and denomination were associated with religious participation. Discussion. We discuss study findings in relation to available ethnographic data on Black Caribbeans and prior survey research on religious participation among older African Americans. Although there were several similarities to the research on older African Americans and religious involvement (e.g., marital status, gender, denomination), noted departures from prior research findings (e.g., income effects) may indicate the influence of ethnic group membership and the importance of the immigration experience in shaping distinctive life experiences for older Black Caribbeans. Abstract

A flexible financing tool capable of matching borrowings and investments with cash flow demands and return on investment goals, commercial paper has been defined as a corporation's IOU, an unsecured promissory note with a fixed maturity. The advantages of issuing commercial paper to meet short-term cash needs include: lower-than-prime interest rates, elimination of compensating balance requirements, exemption from registration requirements stipulated in the Securities Act of 1933, minimized default risks, and increased exposure to institutional investors on national markets. Commercial paper has been issued since the early 1800s. The amount of commercial paper outstanding for 1986 is $315 billion, whereas in 1970 the total amount outstanding was $33.5 billion. Commercial paper is a favorite financing vehicle for finance companies, which first used this technique in the 1920s.

119. The Diego Factor in a Puerto Rican Family: A Case of Anti-Diego

The Diego blood group factor was shown to be present in a family of Puerto Ricans. 609 other Puerto Ricans were Diego negative. The fourth reported case of anti-Diego is presented. The antibody was unusual in that it was discovered incidentally and did not cause hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Abstract

Analyses were made of the sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico in August for the four years 1965 through 1968. No one pattern was found to predominate. The subsurface temperature profiles were then considered, and a rate of simulated withdrawal of 4000 calories of heat per day was made, until there was no heat in excess of 26C. This withdrawal represented heat removed during passage of a hurricane. Difference analyses were constructed for the initial sea surface temperature at each station and that after twenty-four hours of simulated withdrawal. The differences ranged from less than one degree to over four degrees. Again, no consistent pattern was found but generally areas of high concentrations of heat experienced smaller decreases. Actual sea surface temperatures collected after two hurricanes were then analyzed and compared to temperature patterns predicted by the computer model. Illustrations of the relative availability of sensible heat energy for different sea surface temperatures are presented and a hypothesis made to account for the greater than average intensities of Hurricane Betsy (1965) and Camille (1969).
