112. Measuring Cognitive Skills through Conversation-Based Assessment

Abstract

Conversation-Based Assessment (CBA) represents a relatively new method of measuring student cognitive skills(e.g., science reasoning) through adaptive dialogues with automated characters. This approach leverages the openness ofnatural language with the interactivity of spoken dialogue to engage students in verbal reasoning and constructive processes(i.e., cognition). These two dimensions differentiate CBA from other assessment items (e.g., multiple choice and essays) byallowing for more freedom in responses along with the ability to adapt and follow-up on particular threads of information.The conversational exchange affords a rich data stream that can provide additional explanatory evidence of students’ cognitionexhibited through conversational content and dialogue paths. The current work, built on the AutoTutor dialogue engine, willdiscuss the affordances and constraints of CBA along with how this approach may complement and enhance other methods ofmeasuring of cognitive skills.

Abstract

Conversations with computer agents can be used to measure skills that may be difficult to accomplish using tra-ditional multiple-choice assessments. In order to achieve natural conversations in this form of assessment, we are exploringissues related to how test-takers interact with computer agents, such as what dialogue moves lead to interpretable responses,the influence of “cognitive characteristics” of computer agents, how should the system adapt to test-taker responses, and howthese interactions impact test-taker emotions and affect. In this presentation we will discuss our current research addressingthese questions, illustrating important dimensions that are involved with designing a conversation space and how each designdecision can impact multiple factors within assessment contexts.

117. Predictions for the Spatial Distribution of Gluons in the Initial Nuclear State

Abstract

We make predictions for the t-differential cross section of exclusive vector meson production (EVMP) in electron-ion collisions, with the aim of comparing DGLAP evolution to CGC models. In the current picture for the high-energy nucleus, nonlinear effects need to be understood in terms of low-$x$ gluon radiation and recombination as well as how this leads to saturation. EVMP grants experimental access to the edge region of the highly-boosted nuclear wavefunction, where the saturation scale for CGC calculations becomes inaccessible to pQCD. On the other hand, DGLAP evolution requires careful consideration of unitarity effects. The existing $J/{\psi}$ photoproduction data in ep collisions provides a baseline for these theoretical calculations. Under different small-$x$ frameworks we obtain a measurable distinction in both the shape and normalization of the differential cross section predictions. These considerations are relevant for heavy ion collisions because the initial state may be further constrained, thus aiding in quantitative study of the quark-gluon plasma., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 6th Hard Probes Conference 2013

120. The Impact of Individual Differences on Learning with an Educational Game and a Traditional ITS

Abstract

Educational games have the potential to provide motivating, effective training; however, the efficacy of these systems is unclear, and evaluations often fail to identify the relative impact of individual differences on learning outcomes. The current study aims to address these issues by comparing the learning gains from an educational game (iSTART-ME) and an intelligent tutoring system (iSTART). High-school students (n = 125) received comprehension strategy training from the two systems, and results indicated that both training environments yielded significantly better scores on posttest performance and learning measures than students assigned to a time-delayed control condition. Additionally, for both training conditions, students with a low prior 'commitment to reading' exhibited the highest performance improvements. Overall, results indicate that educational games can produce learning equivalent to intelligent tutoring systems, and that this training can provide a means to overcome initial deficits for students with a low 'commitment to reading'.

121. Game Performance as a Measure of Comprehension and Skill Transfer

Abstract

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have begun to develop hybrid systems that balance the learning benefits of ITSs with the motivational benefits of games. iSTART-ME (Motivationally Enhanced) is a new game-based learning environment developed on top of an existing ITS for reading comprehension (iSTART). In an 11 session lab-based study, 40 high school students interacted with the full iSTART-ME system and completed comprehension measures at multiple time points (pretest, posttest, retention, and transfer). The current work examined students' comprehension outcomes and how they were related to performance within three integrated practice methods: Coached Practice (non-game), Showdown (game-based), and Map Conquest (game-based). Results indicate that performance within the game-based practice environments was positively related to comprehension outcomes, whereas performance within the non-game environment had no relation to subsequent comprehension measures. 122. Does Size Matter? Investigating User Input at a Larger Bandwidth

Abstract

This study expands upon an existing model of students' reading comprehension ability within an intelligent tutoring system. The current system evaluates students' natural language input using a local student model. We examine the potential to expand this model by assessing the linguistic features of self-explanations aggregated across entire passages. We assessed the relationship between 126 students' reading comprehension ability and the cohesion of their aggregated self-explanations with three linguistic features. Results indicated that the three cohesion indices accounted for variance in reading ability over and above the features used in the current algorithm. These results demonstrate that broadening the window of NLP [natural language processing] analyses can strengthen student models within ITSs. Abstract

Research on individual differences indicates that students vary in how they interact with and perform while using intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). However, less research has investigated how individual differences affect students' interactions with game-based features. This study examines how learning outcomes and interactions with specific game-based features (off-task personalization vs. on-task mini games) within a game-based ITS, iSTART-ME, vary as a function of students' performance orientation. The current study (n=40) is part of a larger study (n=126) conducted with high school students. The analyses in this study focus on those students assigned to iSTART-ME. Results indicate that students with higher levels of performance orientation perform better during training, progress further within the system, and interact less frequently with off-task game-based features. These results provide further evidence that individual differences play an important role in influencing students' interactions and achievement within learning environments. Abstract

In the actively coupled ($\mathcal{AC}$) pair of waveguides, the growth of small perturbations is saturated by the focussing nonlinearity that couples the linearly growing to the linearly damped mode. On the other hand, in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupler, the focussing nonlinearity promotes the blowup of stationary light beams. The purpose of this study is to compare the nonlinear dynamics and explain the opposite effect of the same nonlinearity in the two systems. We show that while the blowup regimes are stable in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric pair of waveguides, they are unstable and hence cannot be observed in the $\mathcal{AC}$-dimer., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We study the decay $\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, reconstructing the \Lambda_{c}^{+} baryon in the $p K^{-}\pi^{+}$ mode, using a data sample of $467\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-2 storage rings at SLAC. We measure branching fractions for decays with intermediate $\Sigma_{c}$ baryons to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(21.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.0 \pm 5.5) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(11.5\pm 1.0 \pm 0.5 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]=(9.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4 \pm 2.4)\times10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]= (2.2 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\pm 0.6) \times 10^{-5}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\rightarrow\proton\Km\pi^{+}$ branching fraction, respectively. For decays without $\Sigma_{c}(2455)$ or $\Sigma_{c}(2520)$ resonances, we measure ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{non-\Sigma_{c}}}=(79 \pm 4 \pm 4 \pm 20)\times10^{-5}$. The total branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{total}}=(123 \pm 5 \pm 7 \pm 32)\times10^{-5}$. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle $\Sigma_{c}\bar{p}\pi$ final states and in the four-particle $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ final state, and observe different characteristics for the $\bar{p}\pi$ combination in neutral versus doubly-charged $\Sigma_{c}$ decays., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures

132. Improving the Measurement of Cognitive Skills through Automated Conversations

Abstract

Open-ended, short-answer questions, referred to as constructed responses (CR), allow students to express knowledge and skills through their own words. While CRs can reduce the likelihood of guessing correct answers, they also enable students to provide errant responses due to a lack of knowledge or a misunderstanding of the question. Conversation-based assessments (CBAs) require constructing responses to open-ended prompts (similar to CRs), but also leverage natural-language processing to provide adaptive follow-up prompts that target particular information. This work describes an investigation into potential benefits of CBAs as they are compared to a CR approach. Results from 632 middle schoolers indicate that, when compared to CRs, the CBA items allowed 41% of students to provide a more complete response and improve their score.

Abstract

We report on a search for direct CP asymmetry in the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D+- --> K+ K- pi+- using a data sample of 476 fb-1 accumulated with the BaBar detector running at and just below the Y(4S) resonance. The CP-violating decay rate asymmetry A_CP is determined to be (0.35 +- 0.30 +- 0.15)%. Abstract

Test area deformations are used to analyse vapour-liquid interfaces of Lennard-Jones particles by molecular dynamics simulation. For planar vapour-liquid interfaces the change in free energy is captured by the average of the corresponding change in energy, the leading-order contribution. This is consistent with the commonly used mechanical (pressure tensor) route for the surface tension. By contrast for liquid drops one finds a large second-order contribution associated with fluctuations in energy. Both the first- and second-order terms make comparable contributions, invalidating the mechanical relation for the surface tension of small drops. The latter is seen to increase above the planar value for drop radii of ~8 particle diameters, followed by an apparent weak maximum and slow decay to the planar limit, consistent with a small negative Tolman length.

Abstract

We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu, B^+ --> eta l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu, (l = e or mu) undertaken with approximately 462x10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions in several bins of q^2, the square of the momentum transferred to the lepton-neutrino pair, for B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta l^+ nu. From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f_+(q^2) and the total branching fractions BF(B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu) = (1.45 +/- 0.04_{stat} +/- 0.06_{syst})x10^-4 (combined pi^- and pi^0 decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), BF(B^+ --> omega l^+ nu) = (1.19 +/- 0.16_{stat} +/- 0.09_{syst})x10^-4 and BF(B^+ --> eta l^+ nu) = (0.38 +/- 0.05_{stat} +/- 0.05_{syst})x10^-4. We also measure BF(B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu) = (0.24 +/- 0.08_{stat} +/- 0.03_{syst})x10^-4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V_{ub} by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q^2 ranges of B --> pi l^+ nu decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q^2 range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +/- 0.31)x10^-3, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract

Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states ($B^0$ or $\bar{B}^0$), and $J/\psi K_S^0$ or $c\bar{c} K_S^0$ final states (referred to as $B_+$ or $B_-$), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow B_-$ and $B_- \rightarrow \bar{B}^0$, as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced in $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding $\Delta S_T^+ = -1.37 \pm 0.14 (stat.) \pm 0.06 (syst.)$ and $\Delta S_T^- = 1.17 \pm 0.18 (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)$. These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 postscript figures, 1 table, appendix with 4 pages containing supplementary material. Abstract

We study the process e+e- -> pi+pi-pi+pi-gamma, with a photon emitted from the initial-state electron or positron, using 454.3 fb^-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC, corresponding to approximately 260,000 signal events. We use these data to extract the non-radiative sigma(e+e- ->pi+pi-pi+pi-) cross section in the energy range from 0.6 to 4.5 Gev. The total uncertainty of the cross section measurement in the peak region is less than 3%, higher in precision than the corresponding results obtained from energy scan data.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson using data collected with the BaBar detector in the center-of-mass (CM) energy region above the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We use the inclusive yield of phi mesons and the phi yield in association with a high-momentum lepton to perform a simultaneous measurement of the semileptonic branching fraction and the production rate of B_s mesons relative to all B mesons as a function of CM energy. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson is determined to be B(B_s to l nu X)=9.5 (+2.5/-2.0)(stat)(+1.1/-1.9)(syst)%, where l indicates the average of e and mu., Comment: 8 pages, 7 eps figures

Abstract

We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative decays of an Upsilon(2S) or Upsilon(3S) meson, Upsilon --> gamma A0. The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) center of mass energies, and include (121.3 \pm 1.2) x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) and (98.3 \pm 0.9) x 10^6 Upsilon(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->gamma A0) x B(A0-->hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1 x 10^{-6} for an A0 mass of 0.3 GeV/c^2 to 8 x 10^{-5} at 7 GeV/c^2., Comment: 7 pages, 5 postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We report the observation of the baryonic B decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- with a significance larger than 7 standard deviations based on 471x10^6$ BBbar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction for the decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- to be (3.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 0.2_{sys} \pm 1.0_{Lambda_c^+})x10^{-5}. The uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the Lambda_c^+ branching fraction. We find that the Lambda_c^+ K^- invariant mass distribution shows an enhancement above 3.5 GeV/c^2., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (Rapid Communications)

Abstract

We use 111+/-1 million Upsilon(3S) and 89+/-1 million Upsilon(2S) events recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions between bottomonium states using photons that have been converted to e+e- pairs by the detector material. We observe Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b0,2(1P) decay, make precise measurements of the branching fractions for chi_b1,2(1P,2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S) and chi_b1,2(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(2S) decays, and search for radiative decay to the eta_b(1S) and eta_b(2S) states., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, published by Phys. Abstract

Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the $h_b(1P)$ spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (4.3 +/- 1.1(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.)) x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S)-->pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b-->gamma eta_b)., Comment: 8 pages, 4 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

MiBoard (Multiplayer Interactive Board Game) is an online, turnbased board game that was developed to assess the integration of game characteristics (point rewards, game-like interaction, and peer feedback) and how that might affect student engagement and learning efficacy. This online board game was designed to fit within the Extended Practice module of iSTART (Interactive Strategy Training for Active Reading and Thinking). Unfortunately, preliminary research shows that MiBoard actually reduces engagement and does not benefit the quality of student self-explanations when compared to the original Extended Practice module. Consequently the MiBoard framework has been revamped to create Self-Explanation Showdown, a faster-paced, less analytically oriented game that adds competition to the creation of self-explanations. Students are evaluated on the quality of their self-explanations using the same assessment algorithms from iSTART Extended Practice module (this includes both word-based and LSA-based assessments). The technical issues involved in development of MiBoard and Self- Explanation Showdown are described. The lessons learned from the MiBoard experience are also discussed in this paper.
