The Health Equity Advancement Lab (HEAL) at the University of Iowa College of Public Health began in 2012 to support students, researchers, and community members interested in tackling persistent health inequities through a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. Using concepts from critical consciousness theory, we developed an approach to building students', faculty members', and community partners' capacity to engage in CBPR to promote health equity that involved immersion in developing CBPR projects. Our paper describes the evolution of HEAL as a facilitating structure that provides a support network and engages diverse stakeholders in critical reflection as they participate in research to advance health equity, and resulting political efficacy and social action. We describe one HEAL-affiliated research project that employs a CBPR approach and has a strong focus on providing transformative learning experiences for students, faculty, and community members. We highlight challenges, successes, and lessons learned in the application of critical consciousness as a framework that engages diverse academic and community partners seeking to promote health equity. Families with student loans in 2007 have higher levels of financial distress than families without such loans, and these families also transitioned to financial distress at higher rates during the early stages of the Great Recession. This correlation persists once we control for a host of other demographic, work-status, and household balance sheet measures. Families with an average level of student loans were 3.1 percentage points more likely to be 60 days late paying bills and 3 percentage points more likely to be denied credit. The economic theory of regulatory capture predicts that industry groups will attempt to influence their regulators (for example, by lobbying for rules that exclude competition). It has been suggested that the same logic applies to any powerful institution with the ability to affect industry profits. When the aim of industry is to alter the public’s perception of its product (for example, by disseminating favorable messages to the news media or via an advertising campaign, or by funding industry-friendly scientific research), the end result has been dubbed deep capture. We develop a formal model of deep capture, in which consumers have imperfect information about product quality, and a dominant producer is able to increase his profits by altering the parameters of the consumer’s search problem. Microwave sintering is well known as an expeditious process in applications involving ceramics and biomaterials. For powders in the nanometer range, rapid microwave heating could reduce material exposure to elevated temperatures, thus preserving nanostructures in the resulting materials. To investigate the potential of this technique for thermoelectric (TE) materials, we have prepared samples of bismuth-telluride- and lead-telluride-based alloys from powders, for both materials, having sizes of partially agglomerated particles distributed from 0.15 μm to 7 μm. Sintering of the cold-pressed powders was carried out in a microwave furnace for 900 s at temperatures in the range of 583 K to 623 K for bismuth telluride and 793 K to 813 K for lead telluride specimens. For optimized sintering times and temperatures, the samples obtained showed relative densities of almost 95%. Scanning electron microscopy shows some residual porosity and a reduction of grain size, up to a factor of 5 for PbTe, compared with optimized hot-extruded specimens. For bismuth telluride samples, the TE performance in the range of 300 K to 460 K is poor, which is attributed to the arbitrary texture obtained from cold pressing of a highly anisotropic alloy prior to its sintering. In contrast, PbTe exhibits isotropic properties, hence deficiency of texturing is not expected to have a negative impact on its TE properties. Harman measurements show a value of ZT = 0.42 at 617 K for PbTe p-type sintered samples, which is comparable to hot-extruded alloys from similar powders. The present work demonstrates that microwave sintering is a promising alternative to other powder consolidation techniques for polycrystalline materials exhibiting isotropic TE properties. Microwave sintering has emerged in recent years as a new method for sintering a variety of materials that has shown significant advantages against conventional sintering procedures. Sr and Pb doped BaTiO ceramics has been prepared by the high energy ball milling followed by conventional and microwave sintering. The phase formation was confirmed by X-ray diffractometer followed by Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy. Dielectric constant was measured on both the samples and it is observed that, in BaPbTiO (abbreviated as BPT), it increased more than one order of magnitude and in BaSrTiO (abbreviated as BST), it increased two orders of magnitudes at room temperature and Curie transition temperature by microwave sintering. Interestingly the Curie transition temperature of BPT value decreased from 224 to 210 °C, where as in BST ferroelectric ceramics, no variation of transition temperature by conventional sintering and microwave sintering respectively. The MgNiCe hydrogen storage composites with different contents of graphite were prepared by a new method of mechanical milling and subsequent microwave sintering. The small particle size (~25 μm) and the low echo ratio of power indicate that graphite plays an important role not only as a lubricant during mechanical milling but also as a supplementary heating material during microwave sintering. As a catalyst in the hydriding/dehydriding (H/D) reaction, graphite also improved the hydrogen storage properties of the composites. The hydrogen absorption and desorption capacities of MgNiCe with 5 wt pct graphite were 5.34 and 5.30 wt pct H at 573 K (300 °C), its onset temperature of dehydriding reaction was 511 K (238 °C), and its activation energies of H/D reaction were 40.9 and 54.5 kJ/mol H, respectively. Little guidance is available to assist researchers in developing treatment protocols for research on yoga for health concerns. Because yoga is a complex multifactorial mind-body discipline historically developed for nonmedical purposes, numerous decisions must be made in order to thoughtfully develop such protocols. In this paper, a systematic approach is proposed to assist researchers in selecting an intervention that is appropriate for the condition under consideration and explicitly developed. Researchers need to consider the type or "style" of yoga, the components to include (e.g., breathing exercises, postures) as well as the specific protocol for each component, the dose to be delivered (frequency, duration of practice, and the total duration of practice), and issues related to selection of instructors and monitoring the fidelity to the intervention. Each of these domains and the key issues for the development of protocols is discussed. Finally, some areas for further research related to protocol development are recommended. The new type of the chemical cascade reaction was found: formation of cyclopropanes from carbonyl compounds and CH acid by the only bromine direct action. The action of aqueous bromine on the carbonyl compounds and malononitrile in EtOH-H2O solutions in the presence of NaOAc results in the formation of 3-substituted 1,1,2,2-tetracyanocyclopropanes in 48-93% yields. The latter are well-known precursors for the different bicyclic heterosystems, among them those containing cyclopropane ring and those possessing different types of pharmacological activity. Free radical-induced lipid oxidation under oxidative stress has been implicated in a number of human diseases. Isoprostanes (IsoPs), isomers of prostaglandins, are one of the major classes of oxidation products derived from this oxidation process. Measurement of the levels of IsoPs by Mass Spectrometry-based methods has become the "gold standard" biomarker of oxidative stress in vivo. Significant advances have been made in understanding this important pathway of lipid peroxidation since the discovery of IsoP formation in vivo 18 years ago. Studies from our laboratory and others are discussed that have provided insights into the mechanism of formation. Furthermore, new independent studies have demonstrated that IsoPs are the most reliable available marker of lipid peroxidation in vivo, and recent work examining IsoP formation has provided valuable information about the pathogenesis of numerous human diseases. Thus, the complexity of the IsoP pathway has expanded, providing novel insights into mechanisms of lipid peroxidation in vivo and allowing investigators to explore the role of oxidative stress in human disease. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing public health problem worldwide. Clinically, AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a global cognitive decline. Accumulating evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species-mediated reactions, particularly of neuronal lipids, are extensive in those AD brain areas directly involved in the disease processes. Traditional views claim that oxidative-mediated tissue injury in the AD brain is the result of neurodegeneration. In recent years, numerous investigations have pointed to the functional importance of oxidative imbalance as a crucial event in mediating AD pathogenesis. The availability of specific and sensitive markers to monitor in vivo oxidative stress, in combination with studies performed in living patients with clinical diagnosis of AD are helping us to elucidate these issues. The evidence we have accumulated so far clearly indicates that oxidative imbalance and subsequent oxidative stress are early events during the evolution of the disease, and secondary to specific mechanism(s) present in AD but not in other neurodegenerative diseases. These new concepts implicate that this phenomenon may play a more important role in AD pathogenesis than previously anticipated, and that any therapeutic intervention targeting oxidative stress should be initiated at the earliest possible stage of the disease. The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a telescope array that observes the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over 75% of the sky from the Atacama Desert, Chile, at frequency bands centered near 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz. CLASS measures the large angular scale (1° ≲ θ 90°) CMB polarization to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio at the r ∼ 0.01 level and the optical depth to last scattering to the sample variance limit. This paper presents the optical characterization of the 40 GHz telescope during its first observation era, from 2016 September to 2018 February. High signal-to-noise observations of the Moon establish the pointing and beam calibration. The telescope boresight pointing variation is <0.°023 (<1.6% of the beam’s full width at half maximum (FWHM)). We estimate beam parameters per detector and in aggregate, as in the CMB survey maps. The aggregate beam has an FWHM of 1.°579 ± 0.°001 and a solid angle of 838 ± 6 μsr, consistent with physical optics simulations. The corresponding beam window function has a sub-percent error per multipole at ℓ < 200. An extended 90° beam map reveals no significant far sidelobes. The observed Moon polarization shows that the instrument polarization angles are consistent with the optical model and that the temperature-to-polarization leakage fraction is <10−4 (95% C.L.). We find that the Moon-based results are consistent with measurements of M42, RCW 38, and Tau A from CLASS’s CMB survey data. The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is mapping the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at large angular scales (2 < ℓ ≲ 200) in search of a primordial gravitational wave B-mode signal down to a tensor-to-scalar ratio of r ≈ 0.01. The same data set will provide a near sample-variance-limited measurement of the optical depth to reionization. Between 2016 June and 2018 March, CLASS completed the largest ground-based Q-band CMB survey to date, covering over 31,000 square-degrees (75% of the sky), with an instantaneous array noise-equivalent temperature sensitivity of . We demonstrate that the detector optical loading (1.6 pW) and noise-equivalent power (19 ) match the expected noise model dominated by photon bunching noise. We derive a 13.1 ± 0.3 K pW−1 calibration to antenna temperature based on Moon observations, which translates to an optical efficiency of 0.48 ± 0.02 and a 27 K system noise temperature. Finally, we report a Tau A flux density of 308 ± 11 Jy at 38.4 ± 0.2 GHz, consistent with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe Tau A time-dependent spectral flux density model.
