Abstract

The paper presents an investigation of effective properties of piezocomposites of piezoceramic/polycrystallites type by using the effective moduli method, the computer modeling of representative volumes with random structure of granular heterogeneity and the finite element method to solve the homogenization problems. The effective moduli, obtained from the problems with different boundary conditions on the edges of representative volumes, are analyzed.

Abstract

In view of the development of heavy timber seismic-resistant structures, in the context of modern seismic design approach, a possible solution is to allow the timber structure to dissipate a part of the seismic energy. Since timber is a material with an elastic-fragile behaviour, the dissipative function should be delegated to connections, through plastic deformation of steel connectors. However, joints are primary structural elements, with a crucial role in bearing the design loads. Therefore, the role of seismic energy dissipation should be conveniently assumed by ad hoc devices. In this context, the paper deals with the application of fluid viscous dampers (FVD) to timber frames: FVDs dissipate seismic energy, while timber elements and steel connections remain elastic. Specifically, 2D single-storey structures with dissipative bracing systems, equipped with FVDs, in different configurations, are studied, assuming several rates of possible dampings. Non-linear dynamic time history analyses are performed (SAP2000, v18). Results are discussed showing significant reduction of the structural mass compared to the non-dissipative ones, recentering capability of the structures, high dissipative capacity, simpler elastic connections. The reduction of production and maintenance costs follows. All these involve the efficiency of the structural performance and sustainability under earthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 2015 bladder cancer was the fourth most frequent malignancy and the eighth cause of death for cancer. At diagnosis, about 30% of bladder cancer (BC) patients present a muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and 5% a metastatic bladder carcinoma (MBC). For fit MBC patients, combination chemotherapy (CC) is the standard of care for first-line treatment. CC includes both the treatment with methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (MVAC) either the classical or the dose-dense MVAC regimen, and the doublet therapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine (CG). Median progression free survival (PFS) was 7 months and median overall survival (OS) was 15 months. The present review provides an update on the management of MBC, with focus on target therapies, immune checkpoint inhibition, looking for prognostic and predictive factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Malassezia pachydermatis is a normal inhabitant of canine and feline skin that can spread to other pets. The outer layer or epidermis is made up primarily of keratinocytes, which are capable of releasing various factors and expressing receptors that are significantly involved in the immune regulation. Little is known about the mechanism by which M. pachydermatis overcomes the natural barrier of the skin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the direct in vitro interaction between human keratinocytes and a clinical strain of live M. pachydermatis isolated as a pure culture from an otitic cat. Human keratinocytes (HaCat) were infected with M. pachydermatis to analyse the modulation of the innate immune response. Gene expression was analysed by real-time PCR. We demonstrated that M. pachydermatis invaded HaCat cells and modulated the expression of TLR2 after 24. h infection, while HBD-2, IL-1β TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 were modulated both at 24 and 48. h. Thus, our results demonstrated that M. pachydermatis is able to stimulate the innate immune response in infected human keratinocytes indicating a possible role of this yeast as a human opportunistic pathogen.

Abstract

The Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen [1, 2], and the increasing prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in hospitals and communities, both human and animal has led to a demand for new agents that could be used to decrease the spread of this bacterium. Anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) are essential components of innate immunity in humans and other higher organisms, contributing to our first line of defense against infection. The AMPs belonging to the cathelicidin family are a large group of peptides ranging from 12 to 80 amino acid residues in length. LL-37 [3] is the 37-residue human cathelicidin, which represents one of the most studied AMP showing a broad-spectrum anti-microbial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including S. aureus [3]. However, MRSA strains appear to be less sensitive to LL-37 [4], demonstrating the need to identify more effective AMPs. Thus, we have developed two synthetic cathelicidin peptides, hCath-D and NaCath-D, from human and snake (Naja atra), respectively, and tested their anti-microbial activity against MRSA. The peptides were modified to possibly increase antimicrobial potency taking into account the appropriate balance among the total net charge, amphipathicity and hydrophobicity. Interestingly, they showed a significant potential antimicrobial activity (Boman index: 3.0 and 2.54, GRAVY values: 0.22 and -1.58, total net charge: +5 and +8, for hCath-D and NaCath-D, respectively), when submitted to the predictive tool available at the Antimicrobial Peptide Database v2.34 (APD2; http://aps.unmc.edu/A P/main.php).

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Testicular cancer is a relatively rare neoplasia, with an incidence of about 1,5% among male malignancies, usually in the third and fourth decade of life. Although several histological variants are known, with some histotypes affecting older patients (e.g., spermatocytic seminoma), there is a clear predominance (90-95%) of germ cell tumors among young adults patients1. Testicular Germ Cell Tumor (TGCT), undoubtedly the seminoma histological variant more than non-seminoma one, is definitely a highly curable disease, with a distinctive sensitivity to cisplatin-based therapy (and for seminomas to radiotherapy) and an outstanding cure rate of nearly 80% even for patients with advanced disease. So far, clinical and pathohistological features supported our efforts to choose the best treatment option for patients suffering from this malignancy, but we don't clearly enough know molecular and pathological features underlying different clinical behaviors, mostly in early-stage disease: by improving this knowledge, we should better "shape" therapeutic or surveillance programs for each patient, also in order to avoid unnecessary, if not harmful, treatments. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Signs and symptoms of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are non-specific and thus can make diagnosis difficult, even for an experienced clinician. We aimed to evaluate the timing of diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in Italian hospitals and to identify individual and clinical predictors of timely or delayed diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: MASTER is a multicenter prospective registry of patients with acute DVT and PE. Information on clinical presentation and diagnostic methods, temporary and permanent risk factors, were captured by an electronic data network at the time of the index event. RESULTS: Data on 2047 patients (1024 males), 1505 with DVT and 542 with PE, were analysed. Delayed diagnosis (i.e. more than 10 days from onset of symptoms) was observed in 340 (22.6%) patients with DVT and in 88 (16.2%) with PE, respectively. In DVT patients, factors associated with earlier diagnosis were the presence of multiple signs or symptoms (p=0.014), the presence of pain (p=0.049), and previous venous thrombosis (p=0.016). Neither the presence of other known risk factors nor ongoing prophylaxis influenced the timing of diagnosis. In PE patients, only multiple signs or symptoms at presentation (p=0.014) and the presence of transient risk factors (p=0.001) were significantly associated with earlier diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Substantial delays occur when diagnosing both DVT and PE. The severity of presentation, but not patient risk profile are associated with earlier diagnosis, even in patients with signs or symptoms of PE.

Abstract

In order to determine the ability of bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) to suppress apoptosis, we examined the effects of BHV-1 infection on sorbitol-induced apoptosis on Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells. BHV-1 suppresses sorbitol-induced apoptosis in a manner similar to that of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), indicating that BHV-1 has one or more anti-apoptotic genes. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis, expression of some genes encoding apoptosis-inhibiting and -promoting factors were analyzed on BHV-1 infected cells during the process of sorbitol-induced apoptosis. Our results revealed that the expression of bcl-2 and bcl-x(L) decreased after 5 and 3 h p.i., respectively; while bax and procaspase-3 expression increased with respect to control as a function of p.i. times and at 7 h p.i. they were not observed. We further show that the expression of p53 gene was also enhanced, suggesting that this apoptotic mechanism is p53 dependent. From these results, we propose that BHV-1 has one or more genes encoding apoptosis-inhibiting factors which interfere with the involvement of bcl-2 gene family members and apoptotic pathway, depending upon caspase-3, triggered by sorbitol.

Досліджено динаміку розв’язків напівлінійного хвильового рівняння, збуреного адитивним білим шумом, із точки зору теорії випадкових атракторів. Умови на параметри задачі не гарантують єдності розв’язку відповідної задачі Коші. Доведено теорему про існування випадкового атрактора для абстрактної некомпактної багатозначної випадкової динамічної системи, що була застосована до хвильового рівняння з негладким нелінійним доданком. Встановлено апріорну оцінку для слабкого розв’язку випадково збуреної задачі, що дозволило отримати існування принаймні одного слабкого розв’язку. На слабких розв’язках досліджуваної задачі побудовано багатозначний стохастичний потік. Доведено існування випадкового атрактора для побудованого багатозначного стохастичного потоку., Исследована динамика решений полулинейного волнового уравнения, возмущенного аддитивным белым шумом, с точки зрения теории случайных аттракторов. Условия на параметры задачи не гарантируют единственности решения соответствующей задачи Коши. Доказано теорему о существовании случайного аттрактора для абстрактной некомпактной многозначной случайной динамической системы, которая была применена к волновому уравнению с негладким нелинейным слагаемым. Установлена априорная оценка для слабого решения случайно возмущенной задачи, которая позволила получить существование, по крайней мере, одного слабого решения. На слабых решениях исследованной задачи построен многозначный стохастический поток. Доказано существование случайного аттрактора для построенного многозначного стохастического потока., In this paper we investigate the dynamics of solutions of the semilinear wave equation, perturbed by additive white noise, in sense of the random attractor theory. The conditions on the parameters of the problem do not guarantee uniqueness of solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem. We prove theorem on the existence of random attractor for abstract noncompact multi-valued random dynamical system, which is applied to the wave equation with non-smooth nonlinear term. A priory estimate for weak solution of randomly perturbed problem is deduced, which allows to obtain the existence at least one weak solution. The multi-valued stochastic flow is generated by the weak solutions of investigated problem. We prove the existence of random attractor for generated multi-valued stochastic flow.

Abstract

Caprine herpesvirus type 1 (CpHV-1), like other members of the alpha subfamily of herpesviruses, establishes latent infections in trigeminal ganglion neurons. Our groups previously demonstrated that CpHV-1 induces apoptosis in goat peripheral blood mononuclear cells and in an epithelial bovine cell line, but the ability of CpHV-1 to induce apoptosis in neuronal cells remains unexplored. In this report, the susceptibility of Neuro 2A cells to infection by CpHV-1 was examined. Following infection of cultured cells with CpHV-1, expression of cell death genes was evaluated using real-time PCR and Western blot assays. Analysis of virus-infected cells revealed activation of caspase-8, a marker for the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis, and caspase-9, a marker for the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis at 12 and 24 h post-infection. Significant increase in the levels of cleaved caspase-3 was also observed at the acme of cytopathic effect at 24 h post-infection. In particular, at 3 and 6 h post-infection, several proapototic genes were under-expressed. At 12 h post-infection several proapototic genes such as caspases, TNF, Cd70, and Traf1 were over expressed while Bcl2a1a, Fadd, and TNF genes were underexpressed. In conclusion, the simultaneous activation of caspase-8 and caspase-9 suggests that CpHV-1 can trigger the death-receptor pathway and the mitochondrial pathway separately and in parallel. Our findings are significant because this is the first published study showing the effect of CpHV-1 infection in neuronal cells in terms of gene expression and apoptosis modulation.

Abstract

The new analogs of Wendroff’s type inequalities for discontinuous functions are considered. The impulse influence on the behaviour of the solutions of hyperbolic equations with nonlinearities of the Lipschitz and H¨older types is investigated. Розглянуто новi аналоги нерiвностей Вендрофа для розривних функцiй. Дослiджено вплив iмпульсного збурення на поведiнку розв’язкiв гiперболiчних рiвнянь з нелiнiйностями як лiпшицевого так i гельдерового характеру. Рассмотрены новые аналоги неравенств Вендрофа для разрывных функций. Исследовано воздействие импульсных возмущений на поведение решений гиперболических уравнений с нелинейностями как липшицевого так и гельдерового характера.

128. Health-related quality of life and psychosocial implications in testicular cancer survivors. A literature review.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this review, we focused our attention on Quality of Life (QoL) of testicular cancer survivors (TCSs), in general and in the most relevant areas. Several key findings have been highlighted in our review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases were consulted to find published studies, from 1980 to May 2017, that met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: The majority of studies investigated older adult TCSs, while few studies on adolescent and young adult patients were available. Many studies indicate that health-related QoL (HRQoL) is similar among the TCSs and the general population. Even if QoL deteriorates so clear at the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment, afterward returns to normal levels, as defined by the matched controls. However, there are numerous chronic conditions consequent to diagnosis and treatment of testicular cancer that plague survivors and affect QoL, like Raynaud-like phenomena, peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, anxiety, sexual, fertility and body image problems. Even if these problems can have no effects on the measures of global QoL, they have an impact on the quality of life. Differences between TCSs with and without a partner bring to different outcomes in the adjustments to cancer. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to identify TCSs with higher risks of poorer QoL outcomes, to focus interventions on the areas with the greatest impairments. Further researches should consider the effects of testicular cancer on the impaired areas, collecting more data to better identify survivor's needs and consequent interventions, with a special focus on adolescent and young adult TCSs. Other works are requested on therapies, preventive and ameliorative, to reduce chronic side effects of testicular cancer treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the paper the non-autonomous wave equation with non-smooth right-hand side is considered. It is proved that all its weak solutions generate multi-valued non autonomous dynamical system, which has invariant global attractor in the phase space. Досліджується неавтономне хвильове рівняння за умов, які не гарантують єдиності розв’язку задачі Коші. Доведено, що всі слабкі розв’язки утворюють неавтономну многозначну динамічну систему, для якої в фазовому просторі існує глобальний атрактор. Исследуется неавтономное волновое уравнение при условиях, которые не гарантируют единственности решения задачи Коши. Доказано, что все слабые решения порождают неавтономную многозначную динамическую систему, для которой в фазовом пространстве существует глобальный аттрактор.

Abstract

Recent approaches in informatics to model large complex systems are considered following the ideas from real phenomena explained by physical tools. The econo-physics and sociophysics are considered. In particular, Master Equation approach and Markov chains approaches are discussed. Also the partial differential equations as the tool for modeling economical and social systems are represented. New approaches for modeling systems with memory and with accounting internal properties of system elements are considered and some new research problems are proposed. Рассматриваются современные подходы в информатике к моделированию больших сложных систем, аналогичные используемым в физике. Обсуждаются эконофизика и социофизика. Представлены дифференциальные уравнения в частных производных как инструмент для моделирования экономических и общественных систем. Предложены новые подходы к моделированию систем моделирования с памятью и учетом внутренних свойств элементов системы, а также новые проблемы для исследования. Розглядаються сучасні підходи в інформатиці до моделювання великих складних систем, аналогічні тим, що використовуються у фізиці. Обговорюються еконофізика і соціофізика. Наведено диференційні рівняння у частинних похідних як інструмент для моделювання економічних та суспільних систем. Запропоновано нові підходи до моделювання систем із пам’яттю та з урахуванням внутрішніх властивостей елементів системи, а також нові проблеми для досліджень.

Abstract

A sort of gravitational waveguide effect in cosmology could explain, in principle, the huge luminosities coming from quasars using the cosmological large scale structures as selfoc--type or planar waveguides. Furthermore, other anomalous phenomena connected with quasars, as the existence of "brothers" or "twins" objects having different brilliancy but similar spectra and redshifts, placed on the sky with large angular distance, could be explained by this effect. Abstract

We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double- kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a $D_s^{*+}$ production followed by the decay chain $D_s^{*+} \rightarrow D_s^+ \gamma, D_s^+ \rightarrow \tau^+ \nu_\tau ,$ \linebr eak $\tau^+\rightarrow \mu^+\nu_\mu\bar{\nu_\tau}$. The event is characterised by small $Q^2$ and small four-momentum transfer squared $t$ to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive pr oduction mechanism. A complete analysis of the event is presented.

Abstract

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

Abstract

CHORUS is an experiment searching for $\numtonut$ oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a {\sl hybrid} setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions where the $\tau$ lepton decays to $\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$. In a sample of 31,423 $\num$ charged current interactions, no $\nu_\tau$ candidates were found. For large $\dm2$ values, a limit on the mixing angle of $\sin2t < 3.5 \times 10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.
