In the past, rice bakanae was considered an endemic disease that did not cause significant losses in Korea; however, the disease has recently become a serious threat due to climate change, changes in farming practices, and the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains. Since the bakanae outbreak in 2006, its incidence has gradually decreased due to the application of effective control measures such as hot water immersion methods and seed disinfectants. However, in 2013, a marked increase in bakanae incidence was observed, causing problems for rice farmers. Therefore, in this review, we present the potential risks from climate change based on an epidemiological understanding of the pathogen, host plant, and environment, which are the key elements influencing the incidence of bakanae. In addition, disease management options to reduce the disease pressure of bakanae below the economic threshold level are investigated, with a specific focus on resistant varieties, as well as chemical, biological, cultural, and physical control methods. Lastly, as more effective countermeasures to bakanae, we propose an integrated disease management option that combines different control methods, including advanced imaging technologies such as remote sensing. In this review, we revisit and examine bakanae, a traditional seed-borne fungal disease that has not gained considerable attention in the agricultural history of Korea. Based on the understanding of the present significance and anticipated risks of the disease, the findings of this study are expected to provide useful information for the establishment of an effective response strategy to bakanae in the era of climate change.

This paper presents a measurement method for the shielding effectiveness (SE) of a personal computer (PC) case using three-axis electrooptic sensors and a vector network analyzer (VNA). The SE is obtained by taking the difference between the logarithmic values of the ratios of transmitted power to the input power for conditions with and without the PC case. The SE measurements versus the incident angle and polarization of incident electromagnetic fields are performed in a fully anechoic chamber (FAC) in the frequency range of 1 GHz to 4 GHz. A computer simulation is conducted to compare the experimental and numerical results. Additionally, we measured the SE of the PC case in a reverberation chamber (RC). The SE values of the PC case for the three axes in the case of FAC and RC are within 4 dB. The results show that this SE measurement technique, using electro-optic sensors and a VNA, is useful for both FAC and RC.

Dermatophytes invade the stratum corneum and infect the skin, nails, and hair, mostly resulting in superficial infections. Deep dermatophytosis involving the dermis and subcutaneous layer has rarely been reported in immunocompromised individuals. Herein, we report a case of deep dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum. A 71-year-old woman presented with multiple erythematous exophytic and subcutaneous nodules in both the lower legs. The patient was taking immunosuppressive agents for rheumatoid arthritis and antifungal agents for tinea pedis and onychomycosis, which was improperly ceased. Histopathological findings showed diffuse granulomatous infiltration with multinucleated cells, lymphocytes, histiocytes, and neutrophils in the dermis. Septate and branched hyphae were observed in the dermis using periodic acid-Schiff diastase and Gomori methenamine silver staining. T. rubrum was identified in fungal culture from the tissue sample and confirmed through phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit regions in ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene. Intravenous amphotericin B was administered for septic shock before the confirmation of the causative organism, which rapidly improved the condition.

Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is a phenomenon that can occur due to anatomical or neurological causes of the soft palate. VPI can make the patient difficult to articulate through hypernasality and nasal emission. There has been needed the customized treatment, as VPI can occur for many causes. We present the case of 21-year-old male who took palate plastic surgery 20 years ago for congenital submucosal cleft palate. As he had poor contraction of both lateral side of velopharynx, he was diagnosed with coronal type VPI. Through sphincter pharyngoplasty, he can obtain improvement of articulation accuracy. We would like to share this challenged case.

Objective : ABM/P-15 (anorganic bone matrix/15-amino acid peptide fragment) is a commercially available synthetically manufactured P-15 collagen peptide fragment, that is adsorbed on ABM. This study was done to investigate the efficacy of ABM/ P-15 in achieving fusion in the lumbar spine and comparing it with that of recombinant bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM).Methods : A retrospective observational study of prospectively collected data of 140 patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion surgeries in a single specialty spine hospital between 2016 and 2020, with a minimum 6-month follow-up was conducted. Based on the material used for the augmentation of the bone graft at the fusion site, the patients were divided into three categories namely ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM group.Results : ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM were used in 46, 44, and 50 patients, respectively. Patient characteristics like age, gender, bone mineral density, smoking history, and presence of diabetes mellitus were comparable amongst the three groups. Average follow-up was 16.0±5.2, 17.9±9.8, and 26.2±14.9 months, respectively in ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM groups. The fusion was achieved in 97.9%, 93.2%, and 98% patients while the average time-to-union was 4.05±2.01, 10±4.28, and 9.44±3.49 months (pp=0.900) for ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2 and DBM groups, respectively, which reduced to 1.02±0.80, 1.21±0.96, and 0.54±0.70 (p=0.112), respectively at the last follow up. Pre-operative Oswestry disability index scores were 52.7±18.02, 55.4±16.8, and 53.56±19.6 (p=0.751) in ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM groups, which post-operatively reduced to 33.77±15.52, 39.42±16.47, and 38.3±15.89 (p=0.412) and further to 15.74±8.3, 17.41±10.45, and 16.76±9.81 (p=0.603), respectively at the last follow-up.Conclusion : ABM/P-15 appears to achieve union significantly earlier than rhBMP-2 and DBM in lumbar spinal fusion cases while maintaining a comparable clinical and complication profile.

In this paper, a novel helical antenna for high-power microwave is proposed. The proposed antenna is intended to demonstrate improved power handling capacity without any deterioration in matching characteristics, gain, and axial ratio. The proposed antenna with a long helix structure is investigated in order to achieve high gain and a relatively wide impedance bandwidth. By increasing the distance between the helix and the ground plane, an improved power handling capacity is obtained, and the impedance matching problem caused by the proposed method is addressed with the use of a feed-through insulator. In addition, a conical-shaped ground is used to compensate for the gain reduction by increasing the distance between the helix and the ground plane. As a result, the proposed antenna exhibits a gain exceeding 11 dBi and an axial ratio of less than 2 dB within the frequency range of 0.86–1.09 GHz. In addition, its power handling capacity exceeds 50 MW for a 0.7-ns input pulse length in air conditions.

Thirteen red-shifted pentamethine dimethyl and diethylamino tetrahydroxanthylium derivatives have been successfully synthesized

Aim: To characterize the pharmacokinetics of deferoxamine-conjugated nanoparticles (DFO-NPs), a novel nanochelator for removing excess iron. Materials & methods: The pharmacokinetics of DFO-NPs were evaluated in Sprague–Dawley rats at three doses (3.3, 10 and 30 μmol/kg) after intravenous and subcutaneous administration. Results: DFO-NPs exhibited a biphasic concentration-time profile after intravenous administration with a short terminal half-life (2.0–3.2 h), dose-dependent clearance (0.111–0.179 l/h/kg), minimal tissue distribution and exclusive renal excretion with a possible saturable reabsorption mechanism. DFO-NPs after subcutaneous administration exhibited absorption-rate-limited kinetics with a prolonged half-life (5.7–10.1 h) and favorable bioavailability (47–107%). Conclusion: DFO-NPs exhibit nonlinear pharmacokinetics with increasing dose, and subcutaneous administration substantially improves drug exposure, thereby making it a clinically viable administration route for iron chelation.

This study aims to determine the appropriate size of the Mongolian general corpus. This study used the Heaps’ function and Type-Token Ratio (TTR) to determine the appropriate size of the Mongolian general corpus. This study’s sample corpus of 906,064 tokens comprised texts from 10 domains of newspaper politics, economy, society, culture, sports, world articles and laws, middle and high school literature textbooks, interview articles, and podcast transcripts. First, we estimated the Heaps’ function with this sample corpus. Next, we observed changes in the number of types and TTR values while increasing the number of tokens by one million using the estimated Heaps’ function. As a result of observation, we found that the TTR value hardly changed when the number of tokens exceeded 39~42 million. Thus, we conclude that an appropriate size for a Mongolian general corpus is 39-42 million tokens.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is a plant that has traditionally been used in various food and beverage products. Here, we investigated the potential of water extracts derived from Roselle leaves and callus cells for cosmetic and pharmaceutical purposes. We generated calluses from Roselle leaves and produced two different water extracts through heat extraction, which we named Hibiscus sabdariffa plant extract (HSPE) and Hibiscus sabdariffa callus extract (HSCE). HPLC analysis showed that the two extracts have different components, with nucleic acids and metabolites such as phenylalanine and tryptophan being the most common components in both extracts. In vitro assays demonstrated that HSCE has strong anti-melanogenic effects and functions for skin barrier and antioxidant activity. Transcriptome profiling of human skin cells treated with HSPE and HSCE showed significant differences, with HSPE having more effects on human skin cells. Up-regulated genes by HSPE function in angiogenesis, the oxidation-reduction process, and glycolysis, while up-regulated genes by HSCE encode ribosome proteins and IFI6, functioning in the healing of radiation-injured skin cells. Therefore, we suggest that the two extracts from Roselle should be applied differently for cosmetics and pharmaceutical purposes. Our findings demonstrate the potential of Roselle extracts as a natural source for skincare products.

Previously, we have shown that mitochondrial transplantation in the sepsis model has immune modulatory effects. The mitochondrial function could have different characteristics dependent on cell types. Here, we investigated whether the effects of mitochondrial transplantation on the sepsis model could be different depending on the cell type, from which mitochondria were isolated. We isolated mitochondria from L6 muscle cells, clone 9 liver cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). We tested the effects of mitochondrial transplantation using in vitro and in vivo sepsis models. We used the LPS stimulation of THP-1 cell, a monocyte cell line, as an in vitro model. First, we observed changes in mitochondrial function in the mitochondria-transplanted cells. Second, we compared the anti-inflammatory effects of mitochondrial transplantation. Third, we investigated the immune-enhancing effects using the endotoxin tolerance model. In the in vivo polymicrobial fecal slurry sepsis model, we examined the survival and biochemical effects of each type of mitochondrial transplantation. In the in vitro LPS model, mitochondrial transplantation with each cell type improved mitochondrial function, as measured by oxygen consumption. Among the three cell types, L6-mitochondrial transplantation significantly enhanced mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial transplantation with each cell type reduced hyper-inflammation in the acute phase of in vitro LPS model. It also enhanced immune function during the late immune suppression phase, as shown by endotoxin tolerance. These functions were not significantly different between the three cell types of origin for mitochondrial transplantation. However, only L6-mitochondrial transplantation significantly improved survival compared to the control in the polymicrobial intraabdominal sepsis model. The effects of mitochondria transplantation on both in vitro and in vivo sepsis models differed depending on the cell types of origin for mitochondria. L6-mitochondrial transplantation might be more beneficial in the sepsis model.
