Limited public understanding of legal processes and inconsistent verdicts in the Indonesian court system led to widespread dissatisfaction and increased stress on judges. This study addresses these issues by developing a deep learning-based predictive system for court sentence lengths. Our hybrid model, combining CNN and BiLSTM with attention mechanism, achieved an R-squared score of 0.5893, effectively capturing both local patterns and long-term dependencies in legal texts. While document summarization proved ineffective, using only the top 30% most frequent tokens increased prediction performance, suggesting that focusing on core legal terminology balances information retention and computational efficiency. We also implemented a modified text normalization process, addressing common errors like misspellings and incorrectly merged words, which significantly improved the model's performance. These findings have important implications for automating legal document processing, aiding both professionals and the public in understanding court judgments. GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems using large language models (LLMs) often generate inaccurate responses due to the retrieval of irrelevant or loosely related information. Existing methods, which operate at the document level, fail to effectively filter out such content. We propose LLM-driven chunk filtering, ChunkRAG, a framework that enhances RAG systems by evaluating and filtering retrieved information at the chunk level. Our approach employs semantic chunking to divide documents into coherent sections and utilizes LLM-based relevance scoring to assess each chunk's alignment with the user's query. By filtering out less pertinent chunks before the generation phase, we significantly reduce hallucinations and improve factual accuracy. Experiments show that our method outperforms existing RAG models, achieving higher accuracy on tasks requiring precise information retrieval. This advancement enhances the reliability of RAG systems, making them particularly beneficial for applications like fact-checking and multi-hop reasoning.

The use of non-invasive sensors & systems to measure particle beam characteristics is a crucial part of modern accelerator control systems due to their ability to return real time passive measurements without impacting the beam quality. Simulations, which can predict these sensors' behaviour and performance under anticipated accelerator conditions, are valuable tools to ensure confidence in the sensors' functionality prior to a physical bench test. This paper details the design, testing, and results of two sensor models developed using CST Studio Suite software. One model is an elliptical, large-aperture beam position monitor (BPM) for which vertical & horizontal position signal linearity was analyzed. The second model is an AC current transformer (ACCT) beam current monitor (BCM), which was used to search for potential fault cases within the BCM and beam pipe flange gaps. We simulated the Coulomb explosion dynamics due to the fast ionization induced by high-intensity X-rays in six proteins that share similar atomic content and shape. We followed and projected the trajectory of the fragments onto a virtual detector, providing a unique explosion footprint. After collecting 500 explosion footprints for each protein, we utilized principal component analysis and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding to classify these. The results show that the classification algorithms were able to separate proteins on the basis of explosion footprints from structurally similar proteins into distinct groups. The explosion footprints, therefore, provide a unique identifier for each of the proteins. We envision that method could be used concurrently with single particle coherent imaging experiments to provide additional information on shape, mass, or conformation., Comment: 6 pages. 4 figures

Grammatical error correction (GEC) is important for improving written materials for low-resource languages like Zarma -- spoken by over 5 million people in West Africa. Yet it remains a challenging problem. This study compares rule-based methods, machine translation (MT) models, and large language models (LLMs) for GEC in Zarma. We evaluate each approach's effectiveness on our manually-built dataset of over 250,000 examples using synthetic and human-annotated data. Our experiments show that the MT-based approach using the M2M100 model outperforms others, achieving a detection rate of 95.82% and a suggestion accuracy of 78.90% in automatic evaluations, and scoring 3.0 out of 5.0 in logical/grammar error correction during MEs by native speakers. The rule-based method achieved perfect detection (100%) and high suggestion accuracy (96.27%) for spelling corrections but struggled with context-level errors. LLMs like MT5-small showed moderate performance with a detection rate of 90.62% and a suggestion accuracy of 57.15%. Our work highlights the potential of MT models to enhance GEC in low-resource languages, paving the way for more inclusive NLP tools.

Optimally designing molten salt applications requires knowledge of their thermophysical properties, but existing databases are incomplete, and experiments are challenging. Ideal mixing and Redlich-Kister models are computationally cheap but lack either accuracy or generality. To address this, a transfer learning approach using deep neural networks (DNNs) is proposed, combining Redlich-Kister models, experimental data, and ab initio properties. Measurements of the EMC effect in the tritium and helium-3 mirror nuclei are reported. The data were obtained by the MARATHON Jefferson Lab experiment, which performed deep inelastic electron scattering from deuterium and the three-body nuclei, using a cryogenic gas target system and the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility of the Lab. The data cover the Bjorken $x$ range from 0.20 to 0.83, corresponding to a squared four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ range from 2.7 to $11.9\gevsq$, and to an invariant mass $W$ of the final hadronic state greater than 1.84 GeV/${\it c}^2$. The tritium EMC effect measurement is the first of its kind. The right to be forgotten mandates that machine learning models enable the erasure of a data owner's data and information from a trained model. Removing data from the dataset alone is inadequate, as machine learning models can memorize information from the training data, increasing the potential privacy risk to users. To address this, multiple machine unlearning techniques have been developed and deployed. Among them, approximate unlearning is a popular solution, but recent studies report that its unlearning effectiveness is not fully guaranteed. Another approach, exact unlearning, tackles this issue by discarding the data and retraining the model from scratch, but at the cost of considerable computational and memory resources. However, not all devices have the capability to perform such retraining. In numerous machine learning applications, such as edge devices, Internet-of-Things (IoT), mobile devices, and satellites, resources are constrained, posing challenges for deploying existing exact unlearning methods. In this study, we propose a Constraint-aware Adaptive Exact Unlearning System at the network Edge (CAUSE), an approach to enabling exact unlearning on resource-constrained devices. Aiming to minimize the retrain overhead by storing sub-models on the resource-constrained device, CAUSE innovatively applies a Fibonacci-based replacement strategy and updates the number of shards adaptively in the user-based data partition process. To further improve the effectiveness of memory usage, CAUSE leverages the advantage of model pruning to save memory via compression with minimal accuracy sacrifice. The experimental results demonstrate that CAUSE significantly outperforms other representative systems in realizing exact unlearning on the resource-constrained device by 9.23%-80.86%, 66.21%-83.46%, and 5.26%-194.13% in terms of unlearning speed, energy consumption, and accuracy., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy 2025 (Oakland 2025)

Recent experiments by S. Krishnia et al., Nano Lett. 23, 6785 (2023) reported an unprecedentedly large enhancement of torques upon inserting thin Al layer in Co/Pt heterostructure that suggested the presence of a Rashba-like interaction at the metallic Co/Al interface. Based on first-principles calculations, we reveal the emergence of a large helical orbital texture in reciprocal space at the interfacial Co layer, whose origin is attributed to the orbital Rashba effect due to the formation of the surface states at the Co/Al interface and where spin-orbit coupling is found to produce smaller contributions with a higher-order winding of the orbital momentum. Our results unveil that the orbital texture gives rise to a non-equilibrium orbital accumulation producing large current-induced torques, thus providing an essential theoretical background for the experimental data and advancing the use of orbital transport phenomena in all-metallic magnetic systems with light elements., Comment: Accepted to ACS Nano Letters

Computed Tomography (CT) reconstruction of objects with cylindrical symmetry can be performed with a single projection. When the measured rays are parallel, and the axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the optical axis, the data can be modeled with the so-called Abel Transform. The Abel Transform has been extensively studied and many methods exist for accurate reconstruction. However, most CT geometries are cone-beam rather than parallel-beam. Using Abel methods for reconstruction in these cases can lead to distortions and reconstruction artifacts. Here, we develop analytic and model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) methods to reconstruct symmetric objects with an arbitrary axis of symmetry from a cone-beam geometry. The MBIR methods demonstrate superior results relative to the analytic inversion methods by mitigating artifacts and reducing noise while retaining fine image features. We demonstrate the efficacy of our methods using simulated and experimentally-acquired x-ray and neutron projections.

Silicon vacancy ($\mathrm{V_{Si}}$) color centers in 4H-SiC are optically accessible through their zero-phonon line (ZPL) photoluminescence (PL), which is sensitive to the sample temperature. We report the effects of localized laser-induced heating in 4H-SiC by measuring the PL spectra of $\mathrm{V_{Si}}$ color centers. The effects of laser-induced heating manifest as the decrease in the peak height, redshift, and broadening of the ZPLs in the PL spectrum. The local temperature in the sample can be determined from the center energy of the ZPLs by using the Varshni equation. The sample temperature can be modeled as a system in contact with a thermal reservoir while being heated by a laser beam. This work highlights the importance of considering laser-induced heating in the optical properties of color centers in 4H-SiC and their potential applications. The result also suggests that the sharp and bright ZPLs of color centers can be used as local temperature probes in 4H-SiC devices., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

Classical Wolf-Rayet stars are the descendants of massive OB stars that have lost their hydrogen envelopes and are burning helium in their cores prior to exploding as type Ib/c supernovae. The mechanisms for losing their hydrogen envelopes are either through binary interactions or through strong stellar winds potentially coupled with episodic mass-loss. Amongst the bright classical WR stars, the binary system WR\,137 (HD\,192641; WC7d + O9e) is the subject of this paper. This binary is known to have a 13-year period and produces dust near periastron. Here we report on interferometry with the CHARA Array collected over a decade of time and providing the first visual orbit for the system. We combine these astrometric measurements with archival radial velocities to measure masses of the stars of $M_{\rm WR} = 9.5\pm3.4 M_\odot$ and $M_{\rm O} = 17.3\pm 1.9 M_\odot$ when we use the most recent \textit{Gaia} distance. These results are then compared to predicted dust distribution using these orbital elements, which match the observed imaging from \textit{JWST} as discussed recently by Lau et al. Furthermore, we compare the system to the BPASS models, finding that the WR star likely formed through stellar winds and not through binary interactions. However, the companion O star did likely accrete some material from the WR's mass-loss to provide the rotation seen today that drives its status as an Oe star., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

High-speed multiplex imaging of fluorescent probes is limited by a combination of spectral resolution, sensitivity, high cost and low light throughput of detectors, and filters. In this work, we present a hyperspectral detection system based on a silicon photomultiplier array that enables high-speed, high-light throughput hyperspectral imaging at low cost. We demonstrate 16 spectral channel imaging at 50 MP/s (800M spectra per second) with a conventional two photon microscope combined with a generalized spectral unmixing model that enables extraction of spectrally overlapping fluorophores. We show that the high spectral resolution combined with high throughput enables the multiplexing of multiple contrast agents over large areas and the detection of subtle spectral shifts associated with molecular binding. We explore two constructions of oligomorphic Jordan permutation groups preserving a `limit of betweenness relations' and a `limit of $D$-relations', from \cite{bhattmacph2006jordan} and \cite{almazaydeh2021jordan} respectively. Several issues left open in \cite{almazaydeh2021jordan} are resolved. In particular it is shown that the `limit of $D$-relations' is not homogeneous in the given language, but is `homogenizable', that is, there is a homogeneous structure over a finite relational language with the same universe and the same automorphism group. The structure is NIP, but not monadically NIP, its age is not well-quasi-ordered under embeddability, and the growth rate of the sequence enumerating orbits on $k$-sets grows faster than exponentially. This paper presents advancements in the functionalities of the Recupera-Reha lower extremity exoskeleton robot. The exoskeleton features a series-parallel hybrid design characterized by multiple kinematic loops resulting in 148 degrees of freedom in its spanning tree and 102 independent loop closure constraints, which poses significant challenges for modeling and control. To address these challenges, we applied an optimal control approach to generate feasible trajectories such as sitting, standing, and static walking, and tested these trajectories on the exoskeleton robot. Our method efficiently solves the optimal control problem using a serial abstraction of the model to generate trajectories. It then utilizes the full series-parallel hybrid model, which takes all the kinematic loop constraints into account to generate the final actuator commands. Neural multi-channel speech enhancement models, in particular those based on the U-Net architecture, demonstrate promising performance and generalization potential. These models typically encode input channels independently, and integrate the channels during later stages of the network. In this paper, we propose a novel modification of these models by incorporating relative information from the outset, where each channel is processed in conjunction with a reference channel through stacking. This input strategy exploits comparative differences to adaptively fuse information between channels, thereby capturing crucial spatial information and enhancing the overall performance. The experiments conducted on the CHiME-3 dataset demonstrate improvements in speech enhancement metrics across various architectures.

The training of classification models for fault diagnosis tasks using geographically dispersed data is a crucial task for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking to provide long-term service contracts (LTSCs) to their customers. Due to privacy and bandwidth constraints, such models must be trained in a federated fashion. Moreover, due to harsh industrial settings the data often suffers from feature and label uncertainty. Therefore, we study the problem of training a distributionally robust (DR) support vector machine (SVM) in a federated fashion over a network comprised of a central server and $G$ clients without sharing data. We consider the setting where the local data of each client $g$ is sampled from a unique true distribution $\mathbb{P}_g$, and the clients can only communicate with the central server. We propose a novel Mixture of Wasserstein Balls (MoWB) ambiguity set that relies on local Wasserstein balls centered at the empirical distribution of the data at each client. We study theoretical aspects of the proposed ambiguity set, deriving its out-of-sample performance guarantees and demonstrating that it naturally allows for the separability of the DR problem. Subsequently, we propose two distributed optimization algorithms for training the global FDR-SVM: i) a subgradient method-based algorithm, and ii) an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm. We derive the optimization problems to be solved by each client and provide closed-form expressions for the computations performed by the central server during each iteration for both algorithms. Two-dimensional (2D) 1T-VSe$_2$ has prompted significant interest due to the discrepancies regarding alleged ferromagnetism (FM) at room temperature, charge density wave (CDW) states and the interplay between the two. We employed a combined Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and density functional theory (DFT) approach to accurately investigate the magnetic properties and response of strain of monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$. Our calculations show the delicate competition between various phases, revealing critical insights into the relationship between their energetic and structural properties. We went on to perform Classical Monte Carlo simulations informed by our DMC and DFT results, and found the magnetic transition temperature ($T_c$) of the undistorted (non-CDW) FM phase to be 228 K and the distorted (CDW) phase to be 68 K. Additionally, we studied the response of biaxial strain on the energetic stability and magnetic properties of various phases of 2D 1T-VSe$_2$ and found that small amounts of strain can enhance the $T_c$, suggesting a promising route for engineering and enhancing magnetic behavior. Finally, we synthesized 1T-VSe$_2$ and performed Raman spectroscopy measurements, which were in close agreement with our calculated results. Our work emphasizes the role of highly accurate DMC methods in advancing the understanding of monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$ and provides a robust framework for future studies of 2D magnetic materials.

The early detection and nuanced subtype classification of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a predominant cause of cancer mortality worldwide, is a critical and complex issue. In this paper, we introduce an innovative integration of multi-modal data, synthesizing fused medical imaging (CT and PET scans) with clinical health records and genomic data. This unique fusion methodology leverages advanced machine learning models, notably MedClip and BEiT, for sophisticated image feature extraction, setting a new standard in computational oncology. Our research surpasses existing approaches, as evidenced by a substantial enhancement in NSCLC detection and classification precision. The results showcase notable improvements across key performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Specifically, our leading multi-modal classifier model records an impressive accuracy of 94.04%. We believe that our approach has the potential to transform NSCLC diagnostics, facilitating earlier detection and more effective treatment planning and, ultimately, leading to superior patient outcomes in lung cancer care.

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Large-scale extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) waves commonly exhibit as single wavefront and are believed to be caused by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Utilizing high spatiotemporal resolution imaging observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we present two sequentially generated wave trains originating from the same active region: a narrow quasiperiodic fast-propagating (QFP) wave train that propagates along the coronal loop system above the jet and a broad QFP wave train that travels along the solar surface beneath the jet. The measurements indicate that the narrow QFP wave train and the accompanying flare's quasiperiodic pulsations (QPPs) have nearly identical onsets and periods. This result suggests that the accompanying flare process excites the observed narrow QFP wave train. However, the broad QFP wave train starts approximately 2 minutes before the QPPs of the flare, but consistent with the interaction between the unwinding jet and the solar surface. Moreover, we find that the \zx{period of the broad QFP wave train, approximately 130\,s, closely matches that of the unwinding jet}. This period is significantly longer than the 30\,s period of the accompanying flare's QPPs. Based on these findings, we propose that the intermittent energy release of the accompanying flare excited the narrow QFP wave train confined propagating in the coronal loop system. The unwinding jet, rather than the intermittent energy release in the accompanying flare, triggered the broad QFP wave train propagating along the solar surface.

Kaniadakis deformed \kappa-mathematics is an area of mathematics that has found relevance in the analysis of complex systems. Specifically, the mathematical framework in the context of a first-order decay \kappa-differential equation is investigated, facilitating an in-depth examination of the \kappa-mathematical structure. This framework serves as a foundational platform, representing the simplest non-trivial setting for such inquiries which are demonstrated for the first time in the literature. The rapid advancement of intelligent technology has led to the development of optimization algorithms that leverage natural behaviors to address complex issues. Among these, the Rat Swarm Optimizer (RSO), inspired by rats' social and behavioral characteristics, has demonstrated potential in various domains, although its convergence precision and exploration capabilities are limited. To address these shortcomings, this study introduces the Modified Rat Swarm Optimizer (MRSO), designed to enhance the balance between exploration and exploitation. MRSO incorporates unique modifications to improve search efficiency and durability, making it suitable for challenging engineering problems such as welded beam, pressure vessel, and gear train design. Extensive testing with classical benchmark functions shows that MRSO significantly improves performance, avoiding local optima and achieving higher accuracy in six out of nine multimodal functions and in all seven fixed-dimension multimodal functions. In the CEC 2019 benchmarks, MRSO outperforms the standard RSO in six out of ten functions, demonstrating superior global search capabilities. When applied to engineering design problems, MRSO consistently delivers better average results than RSO, proving its effectiveness. Additionally, we compared our approach with eight recent and well-known algorithms using both classical and CEC-2019 bench-marks. MRSO outperforms each of these algorithms, achieving superior results in six out of 23 classical benchmark functions and in four out of ten CEC-2019 benchmark functions. In oncology clinical trials, tumor burden (TB) stands as a crucial longitudinal biomarker, reflecting the toll a tumor takes on a patient's prognosis. With certain treatments, the disease's natural progression shows the tumor burden initially receding before rising once more. Biologically, the point of change may be different between individuals and must have occurred between the baseline measurement and progression time of the patient, implying a random effects model obeying a bound constraint. However, in practice, patients may drop out of the study due to progression or death, presenting a non-ignorable missing data problem. In this paper, we introduce a novel joint model that combines time-to-event data and longitudinal data, where the latter is parameterized by a random change point augmented by random pre-slope and post-slope dynamics. Importantly, the model is equipped to incorporate covariates across for the longitudinal and survival models, adding significant flexibility. Adopting a Bayesian approach, we propose an efficient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm for parameter inference. We demonstrate the superiority of our approach compared to a longitudinal-only model via simulations and apply our method to a data set in oncology.

The remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), primarily driven by deep neural networks, are facing challenges surrounding unsustainable computational trajectories, limited robustness, and a lack of explainability. To develop next-generation cognitive AI systems, neuro-symbolic AI emerges as a promising paradigm, fusing neural and symbolic approaches to enhance interpretability, robustness, and trustworthiness, while facilitating learning from much less data. Recent neuro-symbolic systems have demonstrated great potential in collaborative human-AI scenarios with reasoning and cognitive capabilities. In this paper, we aim to understand the workload characteristics and potential architectures for neuro-symbolic AI. We first systematically categorize neuro-symbolic AI algorithms, and then experimentally evaluate and analyze them in terms of runtime, memory, computational operators, sparsity, and system characteristics on CPUs, GPUs, and edge SoCs. Our studies reveal that neuro-symbolic models suffer from inefficiencies on off-the-shelf hardware, due to the memory-bound nature of vector-symbolic and logical operations, complex flow control, data dependencies, sparsity variations, and limited scalability. Based on profiling insights, we suggest cross-layer optimization solutions and present a hardware acceleration case study for vector-symbolic architecture to improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of neuro-symbolic computing. The development of finite/fixed-time stable optimization algorithms typically involves study of specific problem instances. The lack of a unified framework hinders understanding of more sophisticated algorithms, e.g., primal-dual gradient flow dynamics. The purpose of this paper is to address the following question: Given an exponentially stable optimization algorithm, can it be modified to obtain a finite/fixed-time stable algorithm? We provide an affirmative answer, demonstrate how the solution can be computed on a finite-time interval via a simple scaling of the right-hand-side of the original dynamics, and certify the desired properties of the modified algorithm using the Lyapunov function that proves exponential stability of the original system. This paper introduces an efficient $\mathcal{O}(n)$ compute and memory complexity algorithm for globally optimal path planning on 2D Cartesian grids. Unlike existing marching methods that rely on approximate discretized solutions to the Eikonal equation, our approach achieves exact wavefront propagation by pivoting the analytic distance function based on visibility. The algorithm leverages a dynamic-programming subroutine to efficiently evaluate visibility queries. Through benchmarking against state-of-the-art any-angle path planners, we demonstrate that our method outperforms existing approaches in both speed and accuracy, particularly in cluttered environments. Notably, our method inherently provides globally optimal paths to all grid points, eliminating the need for additional gradient descent steps per path query. The same capability extends to multiple starting positions. We show how to utilize machine learning approaches to improve sliding window algorithms for approximate frequency estimation problems, under the ``algorithms with predictions'' framework. In this dynamic environment, previous learning-augmented algorithms are less effective, since properties in sliding window resolution can differ significantly from the properties of the entire stream. Our focus is on the benefits of predicting and filtering out items with large next arrival times -- that is, there is a large gap until their next appearance -- from the stream, which we show improves the memory-accuracy tradeoffs significantly. We provide theorems that provide insight into how and by how much our technique can improve the sliding window algorithm, as well as experimental results using real-world data sets. Our work demonstrates that predictors can be useful in the challenging sliding window setting.

Experiment 1. Rooting of quince hardwood cuttings: Rooting success was influenced by both the concentrations of IBA and the selection of rooting media. However, the control group (without IBA) notably enhanced rooting when compared to the various IBA concentrations. Cuttings in the control group (without IBA) and those planted in river sand exhibited notably high percentages of successful rooting, underscoring the importance of the selected planting medium. Experiment 2. Bench grafting of loquat: The success of grafting loquat cutting stocks varied based on grafting dates, types of cuttings, and concentrations of IBA. However, IBA at different concentrations did not have a significant impact. Notably, certain interactions such as grafting on February 20 with loquat stock cuttings, yielded higher percentages of successful graft bud sprouting. Experiment 3. Performance of grafting loquats onto different rootstocks: Grafting success was notably influenced by the selection of rootstock, with loquat rootstock demonstrating superior performance compared to quince. The highest significant levels of successful grafting were attained on February 20, underscoring the crucial role of grafting dates. Experiment 4. Impact of tree stock types on grafting success: Grafting success percentage was higher in loquat tree stock when compared to quince. The consistency of grafting success percentages across three dates underscores the significant influence of rootstock type. Experiment 5. Bench grafting of loquat cutting stocks: Graft bud sprout percentages exhibited variations, with loquat stock cuttings surpassing quince. Grafting success demonstrated a consistent increase from February 20 to March 30, underscoring the importance of selecting appropriate grafting dates.

Recently, the centerline has become a popular representation of lanes due to its advantages in solving the road topology problem. To enhance centerline prediction, we have developed a new approach called TopoMask. Unlike previous methods that rely on keypoints or parametric methods, TopoMask utilizes an instance-mask-based formulation coupled with a masked-attention-based transformer architecture. We introduce a quad-direction label representation to enrich the mask instances with flow information and design a corresponding post-processing technique for mask-to-centerline conversion. Additionally, we demonstrate that the instance-mask formulation provides complementary information to parametric Bezier regressions, and fusing both outputs leads to improved detection and topology performance. Moreover, we analyze the shortcomings of the pillar assumption in the Lift Splat technique and adapt a multi-height bin configuration. Experimental results show that TopoMask achieves state-of-the-art performance in the OpenLane-V2 dataset, increasing from 44.1 to 49.4 for Subset-A and 44.7 to 51.8 for Subset-B in the V1.1 OLS baseline., Comment: Accepted to ECCV 2024 2nd Workshop on Vision-Centric Autonomous Driving (VCAD). Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions are key interactions in modern spintronics. These interactions are thought to be dominated by the oxidation of the Co|Al interface in the archetypal Platinum-Cobalt-Aluminum oxide system. Here, we observe a double sign change in the anisotropy and about threefold variation in interfacial chiral interaction, influenced not only by the oxidation, but also by the metallic Al thickness. Contrary to previous assumptions about negligible spin-orbit effects at light metal interfaces, we not only observe strong PMA with fully oxidized Al, decreasing and turning negative (in-plane) with less oxygen at the Co|Al interface, we also observe that the magnetic anisotropy reverts to positive (out-of-plane) values at fully metallic Co|Al interface. These findings suggest modification in Co d band via Co|Al orbital hybridization, an effect supported by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and ab initio theory calculations, highlighting the key impact of strain on interfacial mechanisms at fully metallic Co|Al interface., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

This study utilizes mathematical modeling to offer computational insights into biological heat transfer within elastic skin tissues. This heat transfer is driven by a moving heat source that relies on various relaxation times. Time delay parameters were incorporated based on these relaxation times, highlighting the importance of understanding heat transfer mechanisms and thermo-mechanical interactions to ensure the effectiveness of thermal treatment procedures. Given the significant impact of different variables on thermal relaxation times, their effects were analyzed on the distributions of displacement, thermal stress, and temperature in living tissues. By applying advanced mathematical techniques such as Laplace transforms, precise evaluations of these distributions were achieved. This work presents and showcases a novel reinforcement learning agent called Critic As Lyapunov Function (CALF) which is model-free and ensures online environment, in other words, dynamical system stabilization. Online means that in each learning episode, the said environment is stabilized. This, as demonstrated in a case study with a mobile robot simulator, greatly improves the overall learning performance. The base actor-critic scheme of CALF is analogous to SARSA. The latter did not show any success in reaching the target in our studies. However, a modified version thereof, called SARSA-m here, did succeed in some learning scenarios. Still, CALF greatly outperformed the said approach. CALF was also demonstrated to improve a nominal stabilizer provided to it. In summary, the presented agent may be considered a viable approach to fusing classical control with reinforcement learning. We study the problem of multiclass classification for settings where data features $\mathbf{x}$ and their labels $\mathbf{y}$ are uncertain. We identify that distributionally robust one-vs-all (OVA) classifiers often struggle in settings with imbalanced data. To address this issue, we use Wasserstein distributionally robust optimization to develop a robust version of the multiclass support vector machine (SVM) characterized by the Crammer-Singer (CS) loss. First, we prove that the CS loss is bounded from above by a Lipschitz continuous function for all $\mathbf{x} \in \mathcal{X}$ and $\mathbf{y} \in \mathcal{Y}$, then we exploit strong duality results to express the dual of the worst-case risk problem, and we show that the worst-case risk minimization problem admits a tractable convex reformulation due to the regularity of the CS loss. Moreover, we develop a kernel version of our proposed model to account for nonlinear class separation, and we show that it admits a tractable convex upper bound. We also propose a projected subgradient method algorithm for a special case of our proposed linear model to improve scalability. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the art OVA models in settings where the training data is highly imbalanced. The resurgence of autonomous agents built using large language models (LLMs) to solve complex real-world tasks has brought increased focus on LLMs' fundamental ability of tool or function calling. At the core of these agents, an LLM must plan, execute, and respond using external tools, APIs, and custom functions. Research on tool calling has gathered momentum, but evaluation benchmarks and datasets representing the complexity of the tasks have lagged behind. In this work, we focus on one such complexity, nested sequencing, with the goal of extending existing benchmarks and evaluation. Specifically, we present NESTFUL, a benchmark to evaluate LLMs on nested sequences of API calls, i.e., sequences where the output of one API call is passed as input to a subsequent call. NESTFUL contains 1800+ nested sequences where all the function calls are executable. Experimental results on multiple models and settings show that the best-performing model on the dataset has a full sequence match accuracy of 25% and win-rate of 34% necessitating a large scope for improvement in the nested sequencing aspect of function calling. Our analysis of these results provides possible future research directions for the community, in addition to a benchmark to track progress. The growth of plants is a hydromechanical phenomenon in which cells enlarge by absorbing water, while their walls expand and remodel under turgor-induced tension. In multicellular tissues, where cells are mechanically interconnected, morphogenesis results from the combined effect of local cell growths, which reflects the action of heterogeneous mechanical, physical, and chemical fields, each exerting varying degrees of nonlocal influence within the tissue. To describe this process, we propose a physical field theory of plant growth. This theory treats the tissue as a poromorphoelastic body, namely a growing poroelastic medium, where growth arises from pressure-induced deformations and osmotically-driven imbibition of the tissue. From this perspective, growing regions correspond to hydraulic sinks, leading to the possibility of complex non-local regulations, such as water competition and growth-induced water potential gradients. Passive reflectors mitigate millimeter-wave (mmwave) link blockages by extending coverage to non-line-ofsight (NLoS) regions. However, their deployment often leads to irregular reflected beam patterns and coverage gaps. This results in rapid channel fluctuations and potential outages. In this paper, we propose two LiDAR-aided link enhancement techniques to address these challenges. Leveraging user position information, we introduce a location-dependent link control strategy and a user selection technique to improve NLoS link reliability and coverage. Experimental results validate the efficacy of the proposed techniques in reducing outages and enhancing NLoS signal strength.

This paper describes the corrections made to the FLORES evaluation (dev and devtest) dataset for four African languages, namely Hausa, Northern Sotho (Sepedi), Xitsonga, and isiZulu. The original dataset, though groundbreaking in its coverage of low-resource languages, exhibited various inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the reviewed languages that could potentially hinder the integrity of the evaluation of downstream tasks in natural language processing (NLP), especially machine translation. Through a meticulous review process by native speakers, several corrections were identified and implemented, improving the overall quality and reliability of the dataset. For each language, we provide a concise summary of the errors encountered and corrected and also present some statistical analysis that measures the difference between the existing and corrected datasets. We believe that our corrections improve the linguistic accuracy and reliability of the data and, thereby, contribute to a more effective evaluation of NLP tasks involving the four African languages. Finally, we recommend that future translation efforts, particularly in low-resource languages, prioritize the active involvement of native speakers at every stage of the process to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance.

The increasing complexity and scale of modern digital environments have exposed significant gaps in traditional cybersecurity penetration testing methods, which are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and unable to rapidly adapt to emerging threats. There is a critical need for an automated solution that can efficiently identify and exploit vulnerabilities across diverse systems without extensive human intervention. BreachSeek addresses this challenge by providing an AI-driven multi-agent software platform that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) integrated through LangChain and LangGraph in Python. This system enables autonomous agents to conduct thorough penetration testing by identifying vulnerabilities, simulating a variety of cyberattacks, executing exploits, and generating comprehensive security reports. In preliminary evaluations, BreachSeek successfully exploited vulnerabilities in exploitable machines within local networks, demonstrating its practical effectiveness. We examine stability properties of primal-dual gradient flow dynamics for composite convex optimization problems with multiple, possibly nonsmooth, terms in the objective function under the generalized consensus constraint. The proposed dynamics are based on the proximal augmented Lagrangian and they provide a viable alternative to ADMM which faces significant challenges from both analysis and implementation viewpoints in large-scale multi-block scenarios. In contrast to customized algorithms with individualized convergence guarantees, we provide a systematic approach for solving a broad class of challenging composite optimization problems. We leverage various structural properties to establish global (exponential) convergence guarantees for the proposed dynamics. Our assumptions are much weaker than those required to prove (exponential) stability of various primal-dual dynamics as well as (linear) convergence of discrete-time methods, e.g., standard two-block and multi-block ADMM and EXTRA algorithms. Finally, we show necessity of some of our structural assumptions for exponential stability and provide computational experiments to demonstrate the convenience of the proposed dynamics for parallel and distributed computing applications., Comment: 31 pages; 4 figures

This study explores the development of a hybrid deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model enhanced by autoencoders and data augmentation techniques to predict critical heat flux (CHF) with high accuracy. By augmenting the original input features using three different autoencoder configurations, the model's predictive capabilities were significantly improved. The hybrid models were trained and tested on a dataset of 7225 samples, with performance metrics including the coefficient of determination (R2), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and normalized root-mean-squared error (NRMSE) used for evaluation. Among the tested models, the DCNN_3F-A2 configuration demonstrated the highest accuracy, achieving an R2 of 0.9908 during training and 0.9826 during testing, outperforming the base model and other augmented versions. These results suggest that the proposed hybrid approach, combining deep learning with feature augmentation, offers a robust solution for CHF prediction, with the potential to generalize across a wider range of conditions., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly serving as evaluators in Natural Language Generation (NLG) tasks. However, the capabilities of LLMs in scoring NLG quality remain inadequately explored. Current studies depend on human assessments and simple metrics that fail to capture the discernment of LLMs across diverse NLG tasks. To address this gap, we propose the Discernment of Hierarchical Perturbation (DHP) benchmarking framework, which provides quantitative discernment scores for LLMs utilizing hierarchically perturbed text data and statistical tests to measure the NLG evaluation capabilities of LLMs systematically. We have re-established six evaluation datasets for this benchmark, covering four NLG tasks: Summarization, Story Completion, Question Answering, and Translation. Our comprehensive benchmarking of five major LLM series provides critical insight into their strengths and limitations as NLG evaluators.

Handling high-dimensional datasets presents substantial computational challenges, particularly when the number of features far exceeds the number of observations and when features are highly correlated. A modern approach to mitigate these issues is feature screening. In this work, the High-dimensional Ordinary Least-squares Projection (HOLP) feature screening method is advanced by employing adaptive ridge regularization. The impact of the ridge penalty on the Ridge-HOLP method is examined and Air-HOLP is proposed, a data-adaptive advance to Ridge-HOLP where the ridge-regularization parameter is selected iteratively and optimally for better feature screening performance. The proposed method addresses the challenges of penalty selection in high dimensions by offering a computationally efficient and stable alternative to traditional methods like bootstrapping and cross-validation. Air-HOLP is evaluated using simulated data and a prostate cancer genetic dataset. The empirical results demonstrate that Air-HOLP has improved performance over a large range of simulation settings. We provide R codes implementing the Air-HOLP feature screening method and integrating it into existing feature screening methods that utilize the HOLP formula.

This work shows promising results using multiple instance learning on salivary gland tumours in classifying cancers on whole slide images. The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

The CHIPS R&D project focuses on development of low-cost water Cherenkov neutrino detectors through novel design strategies and resourceful engineering. This work presents an end-to-end DAQ solution intended for a recent 5 kt CHIPS prototype, which is largely based on affordable mass-produced components. Much like the detector itself, the presented instrumentation is composed of modular arrays that can be scaled up and easily serviced. A single such array can carry up to 30 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) accompanied by electronics that generate high voltage in-situ and deliver time resolution of up to 0.69 ns. In addition, the technology is compatible with the White Rabbit timing system, which can synchronize its elements to within 100 ps. While deployment issues did not permit the presented DAQ system to operate beyond initial evaluation, the presented hardware and software successfully passed numerous commissioning tests that demonstrated their viability for use in a large-scale neutrino detector, instrumented with thousands of PMTs., Comment: 30 pages, 28 figures, submitted to MDPI Applied Sciences, Special Issue: Advanced Neutrino Detector Development and Application

Accurate lane detection is essential for effective path planning and lane following in autonomous driving, especially in scenarios with significant occlusion from vehicles and pedestrians. Existing models often struggle under such conditions, leading to unreliable navigation and safety risks. We propose two innovative approaches to enhance lane detection in these challenging environments, each showing notable improvements over current methods. The first approach aug-Segment improves conventional lane detection models by augmenting the training dataset of CULanes with simulated occlusions and training a segmentation model. This method achieves a 12% improvement over a number of SOTA models on the CULanes dataset, demonstrating that enriched training data can better handle occlusions, however, since this model lacked robustness to certain settings, our main contribution is the second approach, LOID Lane Occlusion Inpainting and Detection. LOID introduces an advanced lane detection network that uses an image processing pipeline to identify and mask occlusions. It then employs inpainting models to reconstruct the road environment in the occluded areas. The enhanced image is processed by a lane detection algorithm, resulting in a 20% & 24% improvement over several SOTA models on the BDDK100 and CULanes datasets respectively, highlighting the effectiveness of this novel technique., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures and 4 tables

Extreme natural phenomena are occurring more frequently everyday in the world, challenging, among others, the infrastructure of communication networks. For instance, the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye in early 2023 showcased that, although communications became an imminent priority, existing mobile communication systems fell short with the operational requirements of harsh disaster environments. In this article, we present a novel framework for robust, resilient, adaptive, and open source sixth generation (6G) radio access networks (Open6GRAN) that can provide uninterrupted communication services in the face of natural disasters and other disruptions. Advanced 6G technologies, such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), cell-free multiple-input-multiple-output, and joint communications and sensing with increasingly heterogeneous deployment, consisting of terrestrial and non-terrestrial nodes, are robustly integrated. We advocate that a key enabler to develop service and management orchestration with fast recovery capabilities will rely on an artificial-intelligence-based radio access network (RAN) controller. To support the emergency use case spanning a larger area, the integration of aerial and space segments with the terrestrial network promises a rapid and reliable response in the case of any disaster.
