Diamondiferous kimberlites occur in the Wafangdian area in the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC). In order to better constrain their magmatic source and emplacement time, we have investigated apatite from two kimberlites, i.e., the #110 dike kimberlite and the #50 root-zone kimberlite by measuring in situ their U–Pb and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. The crystallization ages of the #110 and #50 apatites are 460.9 ± 16.8 Ma and 455.4 ± 19.3 Ma, respectively. For the #50 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70453–0.70613 and εNd(t) = −2.74 to −4.52. For the #110 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70394–0.70478 and εNd(t) = −3.46 to −5.65. Based on the similar distribution patterns of the rare earth elements (REEs) and the similar Sr-Nd isotope compositions of the apatite, it is believed that the #110 and #50 kimberlites have the same source region and the kimberlite magmas in Wafangdian were derived from an enriched mantle source (EMI). The primary magmatic composition has little effect on the emplacement pattern. It is more likely that the geological environment played an important role in controlling the retention and removal of volatile components (H2O and CO2). This led to the different evolutionary paths of the kimberlite magma in the later period, resulting in differences in the major element compositions of the apatite. High Sr concentrations may be associated with hydrothermal (H2O-rich fluid) overprinting events in the later magmatic period; the higher light rare earth element (LREE) concentration of the #50 apatite reflects the involvement of the REE3+ + SiO44− ⇔ Ca2+ + PO43− replacement mechanism. Two emplacement patterns of the #110 dike kimberlite (#110 apatite, low Sr, and high Si) and the #50 root-zone (#50 apatite, high Sr, and low Si) kimberlites were identified via major element analysis of the #110 apatite and #50 apatite. During the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition, a series of stratal continuous and well-preserved siliceous rock and phosphorite assemblages developed in Qingzhen, Guizhou Province, China, facilitating research on the biological evolution, marine chemistry, and palaeoecological environment of this period. Therefore, we investigated the paleontology, trace and rare earth elements, total organic carbon, total sulfur content, and Zn isotopes of the phosphorus-bearing rock series in the Taozichong Formation of the Cambrian period in Qingzhen. Geochemical analysis reveals that the sedimentary rocks in this area were formed in the oxygen-rich seawater environment and were not affected by high-temperature hydrothermal activity. The upwelling ocean current provided abundant rare earth elements and other nutrient elements, as well as conditions for the prosperity of biota in Qingzhen. In addition, the δ66Zn value (−0.21‰–0.41‰ range and 0.17‰ mean) in the Qingzhen phosphorous rock series was much lower than that in seawater, indicating a strong level of biological productivity. The variation trend of δ13C, δ18O, and δ66Zn exhibited four stages and three obvious drift events. The results suggest that climate change during this period led to the intermittent flourishing and extinction of organisms, which triggered the negative drift of δ13C and δ18O in the ocean, resulting in a coordinated response of δ66Zn. The unique ecological environment of the Taozichong Formation in Qingzhen also provides favorable conditions for the population continuation of Ediacaran-type benthic soft-bodied metazoon dominated by discoid fossils, Shaanxilithes, worm fossils, and sponge fossils in the Cambrian strata, as well as participation in the global biological explosion events. Skarn Au deposits exist in the circum-pacific metallogenic belt. Interestingly, the Da'anhe Au deposit is the only independent skarn gold deposit in the Lesser Xing'an Range. To determine the metallogenic mechanism and prospecting potential of the Da'anhe deposit, we performed skarn mineralogy, fluid inclusion (FI) and H-O isotope analyses. The results show the following: (1) The Da'anhe deposit is a calcareous reduced skarn Au deposit that formed between an Early Jurassic gabbroic diorite and the Permian Tumenling Formation marble. Its metallogenic process includes five stages: the early skarn stage (Stage I1), late skarn stage (Stage I2), early quartz-sulfide stage (Stage II1), late quartz-sulfide stage (Stage II2) and quartz-carbonate stage (Stage II3). Gold precipitated in Stage II1 and Stage II2. (2) The initial ore-forming fluid was derived from magmatic water and featured a high temperature and intermediate to high salinity. After boiling and mixing, the fluid eventually changed to a low-temperature and low-salinity reducing fluid dominated by meteoric water. (3) The formation depth of the Au orebodies was 2.27–3.11 km, and the orebodies were later lifted to the surface (<500 m). The potential for finding skarn Au deposits in the study area is limited. The formation of CN and its isotopologue C15N through radiative association has been investigated. We considered two processes for the collisions of ground state C(3P) and N(4S) atoms (A2Π → X2Σ+ and b4Π → a4Σ+), as well as, for the first time, we investigated the radiative association of ground state C(3P) and excited N(2D) atoms (B2Σ+ → X2Σ+). The cross-sections for the three processes have been calculated using semi-classical, quantum mechanical, and Breit–Wigner theories. The rate constants, derived from the combination of semi-classical and Breit–Wigner results, have been fitted to the Kooij formula to be used in astrochemical modeling. The rate constant for the B2Σ+ → X2Σ+ process dominates in the investigated temperature range (10–10 000 K), when its own asymptotic energy is used as a reference level. Moreover, the B2Σ+ → X2Σ+ process presents the most pronounced isotope effect on the rate constant. Cerebral metabolic dysfunction is a critical pathological hallmark observed in the aftermath of traumatic brain injury (TBI), as extensively documented in clinical investigations and experimental models. An in‐depth understanding of the bioenergetic disturbances that occur following TBI promises to reveal novel therapeutic targets, paving the way for the timely development of interventions to improve patient outcomes. The 13C isotope tracing technique represents a robust methodological advance, harnessing biochemical quantification to delineate the metabolic trajectories of isotopically labeled substrates. This nuanced approach enables real‐time mapping of metabolic fluxes, providing a window into the cellular energetic state and elucidating the perturbations in key metabolic circuits. By applying this sophisticated tool, researchers can dissect the complexities of bioenergetic networks within the central nervous system, offering insights into the metabolic derangements specific to TBI pathology. Embraced by both animal studies and clinical research, 13C isotope tracing has bolstered our understanding of TBI‐induced metabolic dysregulation. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of fossil sites based on isotopic analyses of enamel typically rely on data from multiple herbivore taxa, with the assumption that this dietary spectrum represents the community's isotopic range and provides insights into local or regional vegetation patterns. However, it remains unclear how representative the sampled taxa are of the broader herbivore community and how well these data correspond to specific ecosystems. Verifying these underlying assumptions is essential to refining the utility of enamel isotopic values for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. This study explores potential links between modern herbivore community carbon isotopic enamel spectra, biome types, and climate in sub-Saharan Africa. This region is one of the most comprehensively isotopically sampled areas globally and is of particular relevance to hominin evolution. Our extensive data compilation reveals that published enamel isotopic data from sub-Saharan Africa typically sample only a small percentage of the taxa documented at most localities and that some biome types (e.g., subtropical savannas) are dramatically overrepresented relative to others (e.g., forests) in these modern data sets. Multiple statistical analyses, including linear models and cluster analyses, revealed weak relationships of associated mammalian herbivore enamel isotopic values, biome type, and climate parameters. These results confound any simple assumptions about how community isotopic profiles map onto specific environments, highlighting the need for more precise strategic approaches in extending isotopic frameworks into the past for paleoecological reconstructions. Developing more refined modern analogs will ultimately allow us to more accurately characterize the isotopic spectra of paleo-communities and link isotopic dietary signatures to specific ecosystems. Altered oceanic crust (AOC) plays a critical role in geochemical recycling in subduction zones. However, identifying contributions of subducted AOC to arc magmas remains a conundrum due to the lack of effective tracers. Here, we investigate the Ba‐Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions of lavas from the Mariana arc and back‐arc. Based on a statistical analysis of the Sr‐Nd isotopes for global arc volcanoes, we confirm that AOC‐derived fluid (or hydrous melt), rather than sediment‐derived melt or fluid, is responsible for the Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling (i.e., 87Sr/86Sr is "excessively" enriched relative to 143Nd/144Nd when compared to the "normal" mantle derivates) observed in island arc lavas. We show that the arc lavas with increasingly decoupled Sr‐Nd isotopes generally have heavier Ba isotope ratios, which is also a characteristic feature of AOC‐derived fluids. Thus, these results establish an intimate link between subducted AOC, heavy Ba isotope compositions, and Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling signature in island arcs, which provides a powerful tool to trace the AOC recycling in subduction zones. Furthermore, a similar correlation is observed between Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling and heavy B isotope ratios for global arc lavas, implying that the recycling of AOC component is generally linked to serpentinite dehydration in subduction zones. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a common European tree species, and understanding its acclimation to the rapidly changing climate through physiological, biochemical or structural adjustments is vital for predicting future growth. We investigated a long‐term irrigation experiment at a naturally dry forest in Switzerland, comparing Scots pine trees that have been continuously irrigated for 17 years (irrigated) with those for which irrigation was interrupted after 10 years (stop) and non‐irrigated trees (control), using tree growth, xylogenesis, wood anatomy, and carbon, oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope measurements in the water, sugars and cellulose of plant tissues. The dendrochronological analyses highlighted three distinct acclimation phases to the treatments: irrigated trees experienced (i) a significant growth increase in the first 4 years of treatment, (ii) high growth rates but with a declining trend in the following 8 years and finally (iii) a regression to pre‐irrigation growth rates, suggesting the development of a new growth limitation (i.e. acclimation). The introduction of the stop treatment resulted in further growth reductions to below‐control levels during the third phase. Irrigated trees showed longer growth periods and lower tree‐ring δ13C values, reflecting lower stomatal restrictions than control trees. Their strong tree‐ring δ18O and δ2H (O–H) relationship reflected the hydrological signature similarly to the control. On the contrary, the stop trees had lower growth rates, conservative wood anatomical traits, and a weak O–H relationship, indicating a physiological imbalance. Tree vitality (identified by crown transparency) significantly modulated growth, wood anatomical traits and tree‐ring δ13C, with low‐vitality trees of all treatments performing similarly regardless of water availability. We thus provide quantitative indicators for assessing physiological imbalance and tree acclimation after environmental stresses. We also show that tree vitality is crucial in shaping such responses. Annual antler growth begins in the spring and is completed by late summer for male caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) from the Qamanirjuaq herd (Nunavut, Canada), aligned with both the spring migration and a seasonal dietary shift. Antlers may provide a non‐lethal means of studying short‐ and long‐term changes in caribou ecology through incorporated isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). We sampled the antlers of 12 male caribou from the Qamanirjuaq herd culled in September 1967. We predicted that serial sampling of antlers would reflect the known seasonal dietary change from lichen to grass‐like and shrub diet based on rumen contents from individuals culled during the same period. The δ13C and δ15N were analyzed in food sources and every 3 cm along each antler's length. The carbon isotope compositions of collagen (δ13Ccol) varied by ~0.5‰ among individuals and within antlers, while the carbon isotope compositions of antler bioapatite (δ13CCO3) increased by 1–1.5‰ from pedicle to tip. Values of δ15Ncol increased within antlers by 1–3‰ from pedicle to tip and varied by 3‰ among the individuals sampled. Antler collagen was lower in δ15Ncol by ~1‰ relative to bone collagen. Bayesian mixing models were conducted to test for changes in dietary proportions from antler isotope compositions. Mixing models did not indicate significant dietary shifts for any individual during antler formation, showing consistently mixed diets of fungi, horsetail, lichen, and woody plants. Increases in δ15Ncol in antler tissue could, therefore, correspond to subtle seasonal dietary changes and/or the physiological stress of antler tissue development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The isotope ratios of zinc (66Zn/64Zn expressed as δ66Zn), a vital nutrient, increasingly demonstrate trophic discrimination among vertebrates, making δ66Zn a valuable dietary proxy for ecological, archaeological, and palaeontological studies. Given the novelty of the methodology, tissue-diet and tissue-tissue zinc isotope fractionation factors remain poorly understood and have so far only been studied in a few terrestrial mammals. Here, we investigate δ66Zn compositions of enameloid, bone, and white muscle of seven artificially-fed pisciculture gilt-head seabreams (Sparus aurata) from offshore Israel, in comparison to the Zn isotope composition of their diet. In addition, we also analysed δ66Zn values in the same tissues of wild-caught S. aurata, bluespotted seabream (Pagrus caeruleostictus) and grey triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) caught off the coast of Israel. We determine a tissue-diet δ66Zn offset for Sparus aurata of − 0.04 ± 0.09 ‰ (2SD) for bone, − 0.29 ± 0.06 ‰ (2SD) for enameloid, and − 0.45 ± 0.07 ‰ (2SD) for white muscle. Wild-caught fish have much higher among-individual δ66Zn variability with values distinct from the pisciculture S. aurata, documenting a much more isotopically heterogeneous diet consumed by the wild individuals. Still, tissue–tissue δ66Zn differences in wild-caught individuals are close to those observed in the pisciculture ones with progressively lower δ66Zn values in the order bone > enameloid > white muscle. Our results demonstrate predictable tissue-diet and tissue-tissue δ66Zn differences among fish hard and soft tissues and can be applied to identify the δ66Zn values of dietary input, thereby informing trophic (palaeo)ecological reconstructions. Integrated petrological, geochemical, isotopic and thermobarometric study of metasedimentary rocks from the amphibolite‐ to granulite‐facies transition zone of the Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC), South India, has provided new insight into the evolution of the lower continental crust in this region. Phase equilibrium modelling of metapelites and metagreywackes suggests that they reached peak metamorphism at ~800–850°C and 6–7 kbar (corresponding to a paleodepth of ~20 km), with minor retrograde change occurring at ~700°C and 3–5 kbar during exhumation. U–Pb ages of conventionally separated zircon from metapelite samples range from 2.5 to 3.4 Ga, whereas garnet‐hosted zircons yield younger ages of 2.5–2.7 Ga. Zircon Th/U ratios and Hf isotopes reveal several significant pulses of zircon growth at 3.0, 2.95 and 2.7 Ga. Hf isotope data suggest the evolution of juvenile magma at around 3.2 Ga, while Hf model ages show that the crust building process also involved the recycling of pre‐existing Mesoarchean crust. Our study confirms the presence of a Paleoarchean component in the EDC lower crust, as well as older metamorphic events in the terrain and the gradational distribution of the metamorphic rocks. Enabling the build-up of continental crust is a vital step in the stabilization of cratonic lithosphere. However, these initial crustal nuclei are commonly either destroyed by recycling or buried by younger rocks. In the Fennoscandian Shield, the oldest rocks are ca. 3.5 Ga, but ca. 3.7 Ga inherited and detrital zircons suggest the presence of an older, unexposed crustal substrate. We present U-Pb, O, and Hf isotope data from detrital zircons of three major Finnish rivers as well as zircon O and Hf isotope data from previously dated rocks of the Archean Suomujärvi and Pudasjärvi complexes, central Finland. Combined, these data indicate a previously unidentified ca. 3.75 Ga crustal nucleus in the Fennoscandian Shield. This adds to the growing number of Eoarchean nuclei recognized in Archean terranes around the globe, highlighting the importance of such nuclei in enabling the growth of continental crust. The isotope signatures of the Fennoscandian nucleus correlate with equivalent-aged rocks in Greenland, consistent with a common Eoarchean evolution for Fennoscandia and the North Atlantic craton. The Songliao Basin is rich in uranium ores, and the Yaojia Formation, which is dominated by gray fine-grained sandstones, contains the main ore-bearing stratum. Rocks in the formation contain high SiO2, Al2O3, and total alkali, with enrichment in Rb, Th, U, K, and light rare earth elements but are depleted in high field strength elements, similar to upper crustal rocks. U–Pb dating of zircon grains from sandstones in the formation yielded four groups of ages, including 99–182, 202–245, 284–365, and 1800–1900 Ma. These ages combined with the Hf isotope composition, geochemical characteristics, and regional history suggest that the Yaojia Formation rocks are associated with passive and active continental margin settings. These clastic rocks originate principally from felsic rocks in the Zhangguangcailing–Xiao Xing'anling area, and these were deposited in oxic freshwater environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal alteration is crucial in the formation of many ore deposits, with potassium (K) mobilization and cycling being prevalent. Potassic metasomatism of wall rocks generally forms K-bearing minerals, such as hydrothermal feldspar and mica. However, determining the source and redistribution of K (and other elements transported by the same fluid) in hydrothermal systems is challenging. K isotopes offer a potential solution to this problem. This study presents new K isotope data from two K-rich alteration assemblages — K-feldspar and sericite-quartz-pyrite — in the Jiaodong gold province of China. The data covers a compositional range from unaltered granites to syn -magmatic potassic alteration (formation of K-feldspar) and post-magmatic syn -mineralization phyllic alteration (formation of sericite). Potassic alteration in granite correlates with significant K addition, whereas phyllic alteration of earlier phases of magmatic and hydrothermal K-feldspar resulted in K loss. K-feldspar altered granites display similar δ41K values (–0.55 to –0.42 ‰ for whole-rocks and –0.56 to –0.48 ‰ for K-feldspar separates) as unaltered granite (–0.52 to –0.47 ‰). The narrow δ41K range suggests that magmatic fluid exsolution and magmatic-hydrothermal alteration have a minor effect on δ41K of the altered rock. Phyllic alteration of K-feldspar altered precursor rock leads to K loss and elevated δ41K values ranging from –0.36 to –0.19 ‰ for whole-rocks and –0.34 to –0.17 ‰ for sericite mineral separates. As sericite preferentially incorporates 41K, sericite will have higher δ41K values than the precursor K-feldspar, whereas the fluids will have lower δ41K values. Our study demonstrates that hydrothermal alteration may affect the K isotope composition of altered rocks in several ways, contingent on the nature of the involved phases, making K isotopes a promising tool for studying hydrothermal alteration and associated mineralization. S‐Fe‐Cu isotope systems are powerful tracers for revealing geochemical processes. However, the microanalysis of S‐Fe‐Cu isotopes is critically limited by the lack of suitable reference materials. Herein, we present three potential reference materials Ll‐Cpy (chalcopyrite), Ll‐Po (pyrrhotite) and Ll‐Sp (sphalerite) for in situ S‐Fe‐Cu isotope measurements. Numerous in situ S‐Fe‐Cu isotope measurements were performed over two years to assess isotopic homogeneity. The bulk S isotopic compositions were determined independently in seven laboratories by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS); the preferred δ34SV‐CDT for Ll‐Cpy, Ll‐Po, Ll‐Sp are 6.13 ± 0.37‰ (2s), 6.42 ± 0.37‰ (2s) and 6.28 ± 0.38‰ (2s), respectively. The bulk Fe isotope ratios in Fe‐bearing Ll‐Cpy and Ll‐Po were determined using solution nebulisation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry, and the obtained δ56FeIRMM‐014 values are 0.57 ± 0.07‰ (2s) and ‐0.62 ± 0.07‰ (2s), respectively. The mean bulk δ65CuNIST SRM 976 value of Ll‐Cpy is 0.57 ± 0.06‰ (2s). All the bulk values are in good agreement with the long‐term statistical results of laser ablation‐MC‐ICP‐MS and proposed as the recommended values. These sulfides are well characterised and isotopically homogeneous (at 30–40 μm spatial resolution), and can be used as potential calibration materials for in situ S‐Fe‐Cu isotope measurements. The stable Zr isotope ratios in zircon yield a novel geochemical tracer that, together with the Lu‐Hf and U‐Pb radiogenic isotope systems, allows for a better understanding of the magmatic evolution of silicate melts. We present a solution‐based procedure for coupled stable Zr, Lu‐Hf and U‐Pb isotope ratio determinations for individual zircons using a 91Zr‐96Zr tracer purified from Hf and a late‐spiking protocol for Zr. This method yields high‐precision Zr and Hf isotope results while maintaining low blank levels for U‐Pb isotope and Lu/Hf ratio determinations. With a two‐fold improvement on the precision relative to previous solution‐based work, we report δ94ZrIPGP‐Zr values (deviation of the 94Zr/90Zr ratio in the sample relative to the IPGP‐Zr reference material) and associated intermediate precisions (2s) for the zircon reference materials 91500, Mud Tank, Plešovice and Penglai of ‐0.041 ± 0.015‰, 0.018 ± 0.013‰, 0.089 ± 0.020‰ and ‐0.117 ± 0.021‰, respectively. Furthermore, this method yields un‐biased δ94ZrIPGP‐Zr and 176Hf/177Hf results for 25‐ng Zr and 0.56‐ng Hf aliquots of the Mud Tank zircon with intermediate precisions (2s) of 0.027‰ and 1.7 ε (parts per ten thousand), respectively. Traditionally, the determination of isotope ratios is analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS) method, which is usually destructive to sample (i.e., sample dissolution). Furthermore, the 58Fe abundance (0.282%) is generally rather low relative to other Fe isotopes, therefore, 58Fe/54Fe results is not reported in the routine measurement for MS methods. Given the importance of investigating a possible genetic relationship between the stable isotope composition of the Moon and the Earth, here, we firstly report the isotope ratios of 58Fe/54Fe in the Chang'E-5 (CE-5) scooped bulk lunar sample. In this work, the 58Fe/54Fe ratios were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) which is essentially distinguished and a potentially complementary advantage for MS in the determination of stable isotope ratios. Global‐scale estimates of carbon fluxes from satellite data‐driven models are constrained by considerable uncertainties regarding Gross Primary Production (GPP) and the lack of the watershed‐scale measurements required for model calibration. Recently conducted global modelling efforts indicate that semiarid ecosystems dominate the increasing trends and inter‐annual variation of net CO2 exchange with the atmosphere, but semi‐arid regions have received little attention with regard to GPP estimation. In this study, we used the distinct isotope effect of transpiration and evaporation to calculate transpiration losses and subsequently CO2 uptake by terrestrial vegetation through the water and carbon cycle using the water use efficiency of plants. By studying two Mediterranean watersheds with contrasted environmental conditions over several hydrological years, we found a strong dependence of GPP on annual and seasonal water availability. The results demonstrated that when compared to GPP values obtained in worldwide biomes using biological methods, our isotope approach was validated, highlighting the limitations of satellite‐data‐driven models like MODIS in capturing the impact of water stress on photosynthesis and GPP estimates. These results encourage investigation of GPP by the isotope mass balance approach where direct carbon flux measurements are rare or absent in order to help to substantiate, modify or shed doubt on interpolated GPP for those regions and achieve consensus on global GPP estimates. Given the relevant role of semi‐arid ecosystems in the global carbon balance as well as the limitation of existing data sets, our improved method based on the isotope mass balance approach helps to obtain rapid and affordable estimates of GPP for semi‐arid ecosystems. During the last forty years, the use of strontium isotopes in archaeology and biogeochemical research has spread widely. These isotopes, alone or in combination with others, can contribute to trace past and present environmental conditions. However, the interpretation of the isotopic values of strontium is not always simple and requires good knowledge of geochemistry and geology. This short paper on the use of strontium isotopes is aimed at those who use this tool (archaeologists, but not only) but who do not have a thorough knowledge of mineralogy, geology, and geochemistry necessary for a good understanding of natural processes involving these isotopes. We report basic knowledge and suggestions for the correct use of these isotopes. The isotopic characteristics of bio-assimilable strontium depend not so much on the isotopic characteristics of the bulk rock as, rather, on those of its more soluble minerals. Before studying human, animal and plant remains, the state of conservation and any conditions of isotopic pollution should be carefully checked. Samples should be collected according to random sampling rules. The data should be treated by a statistical approach. To make comparisons between different areas, it should be borne in mind that the study of current soils can be misleading since the mineralogical modification of soil over time can be very rapid. Bacteria catalyze the formation and destruction of soil organic matter, but the bacterial dynamics in soil that govern carbon (C) cycling are not well understood. Life history strategies explain the complex dynamics of bacterial populations and activities based on trade-offs in energy allocation to growth, resource acquisition, and survival. Such trade-offs influence the fate of soil C, but their genomic basis remains poorly characterized. We used multisubstrate metagenomic DNA stable isotope probing to link genomic features of bacteria to their C acquisition and growth dynamics. We identify several genomic features associated with patterns of bacterial C acquisition and growth, notably genomic investment in resource acquisition and regulatory flexibility. Moreover, we identify genomic trade-offs defined by numbers of transcription factors, membrane transporters, and secreted products, which match predictions from life history theory. We further show that genomic investment in resource acquisition and regulatory flexibility can predict bacterial ecological strategies in soil. IMPORTANCE Soil microbes are major players in the global carbon cycle, yet we still have little understanding of how the carbon cycle operates in soil communities. A major limitation is that carbon metabolism lacks discrete functional genes that define carbon transformations. Instead, carbon transformations are governed by anabolic processes associated with growth, resource acquisition, and survival. We use metagenomic stable isotope probing to link genome information to microbial growth and carbon assimilation dynamics as they occur in soil. From these data, we identify genomic traits that can predict bacterial ecological strategies which define bacterial interactions with soil carbon.

An isotopic labelling method was developed to investigate substrate binding by ketosynthases, exemplified by the second ketosynthase of the polyketide synthase BaeJ involved in bacillaene biosynthesis (BaeJ-KS2). For this purpose, both enantiomers of a 13C-labelled N-acetylcysteamine thioester (SNAC ester) surrogate of the proposed natural intermediate of BaeJ-KS2 were synthesised, including an enzymatic step with glutamate decarboxylase, and incubated with BaeJ-KS2. Substrate binding was demonstrated through 13C NMR analysis of the products against the background of various control experiments.

Isotopic tracers can reveal insights into the temporal nature of metabolism and track the fate of ingested substrates. A common use of tracers is to assess aspects of human carbohydrate metabolism during exercise under various established models. The dilution model is used alongside intravenous infusion of tracers to assess carbohydrate appearance and disappearance rates in the circulation, which can be further delineated into exogenous and endogenous sources. The incorporation model can be used to estimate exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates. Combining methods can provide insight into key factors regulating health and performance, such as muscle and liver glycogen utilization, and the underlying regulation of blood glucose homeostasis before, during, and after exercise. Obtaining accurate, quantifiable data from tracers, however, requires careful consideration of key methodological principles. These include appropriate standardization of pretrial diet, specific tracer choice, whether a background trial is necessary to correct expired breath CO2 enrichments, and if so, what the appropriate background trial should consist of. Researchers must also consider the intensity and pattern of exercise, and the type, amount, and frequency of feeding (if any). The rationale for these considerations is discussed, along with an experimental design checklist and equation list which aims to assist researchers in performing high-quality research on carbohydrate metabolism during exercise using isotopic tracer methods. The growth and physiology of soil microorganisms, which play vital roles in biogeochemical cycling, are shaped by both current and historical soil environmental conditions. Here, we developed and applied a genome-resolved metagenomic implementation of quantitative stable isotope probing (qSIP) with an H218O labeling experiment to identify actively growing soil microorganisms and their genomic capacities. qSIP enabled measurement of taxon-specific growth because isotopic incorporation into microbial DNA requires production of new genome copies. We studied three Mediterranean grassland soils across a rainfall gradient to evaluate the hypothesis that historic precipitation levels are an important factor controlling trait selection. We used qSIP-informed genome-resolved metagenomics to resolve the active subset of soil community members and identify their characteristic ecophysiological traits. Higher year-round precipitation levels correlated with higher activity and growth rates of flagellar motile microorganisms. In addition to heavily isotopically labeled bacteria, we identified abundant isotope-labeled phages, suggesting phage-induced cell lysis likely contributed to necromass production at all three sites. Further, there was a positive correlation between phage activity and the activity of putative phage hosts. Contrary to our expectations, the capacity to decompose the diverse complex carbohydrates common in soil organic matter or oxidize methanol and carbon monoxide were broadly distributed across active and inactive bacteria in all three soils, implying that these traits are not highly selected for by historical precipitation. IMPORTANCE Soil moisture is a critical factor that strongly shapes the lifestyle of soil organisms by changing access to nutrients, controlling oxygen diffusion, and regulating the potential for mobility. We identified active microorganisms in three grassland soils with similar mineral contexts, yet different historic rainfall inputs, by adding water labeled with a stable isotope and tracking that isotope in DNA of growing microbes. By examining the genomes of active and inactive microorganisms, we identified functions that are enriched in growing organisms, and showed that different functions were selected for in different soils. Wetter soil had higher activity of motile organisms, but activity of pathways for degradation of soil organic carbon compounds, including simple carbon substrates, were comparable for all three soils. We identified many labeled, and thus active bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria), implying that the cells they killed contributed to soil organic matter. The activity of these bacteriophages was significantly correlated with activity of their hosts.

Many macrophyte species exhibit a high degree of plasticity, enabling them to thrive in various aquatic ecosystems. Identifying the growth conditions of individual aquatic plant species during research or specimen collection is not always possible. In many cases, the nature of the planned research does not necessitate recognizing environmental conditions. However, the scope of identifying the habitat parameters of the collections of submerged aquatic plant herbariums provides an opportunity for further research. This paper explores the possibilities of using isotopic signals of plants, supported by spectral analyses of powdered plant materials, to ascertain the environmental conditions from which the samples were collected. The results obtained from the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions (δ13CORG and δ15NORG) and the analysis of spectral spectra via FTIR-ART (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflectance) of plant material (Elodea canadensis Michx. species) collected from various habitat ecosystems, including rivers and both hard- and softwater lakes, exhibited significant distinctions between these habitats. Particularly high values of δ15NORG were recorded in the material from rivers. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions did not differentiate between the material collected from softwater and hardwater lakes. Nevertheless, when comparing the isotopic findings with the FTIR-ATR spectral analysis focused on identifying characteristic peaks associated with the presence of calcium carbonate, noticeable differences were observed in the presence and intensity of calcium carbonate peaks in the material. These differences were only evident when nondecarbonated plant material from hardwater lakes was used for the FTIR-ATR analysis. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the combination of methods applied in this study to identify the origin of E. canadensis from various freshwater environments is the first application of its kind that could enable the rapid identification of plant material origin. Such identification could prove useful in environmental, ecological, and paleoenvironmental research. The increased knowledge of macrophytes’ δ13CORG and δ15NORG values might also be essential in further tracking accelerated eutrophication based on aquatic vegetation’s isotopic signals. This might be important due to the assumption that the increased rate of eutrophication influences organic matter sedimentation in aquatic ecosystems, especially lakes.

Tracking the metabolic activity of whole soil communities can improve our understanding of the transformation and fate of carbon in soils. We used stable isotope metabolomics to trace 13C from nine labeled carbon sources into the water-soluble metabolite pool of an agricultural soil over time. Soil was amended with a mixture of all nine sources, with one source isotopically labeled in each treatment. We compared changes in the 13C enrichment of metabolites with respect to carbon source and time over a 48-day incubation and contrasted differences between soluble sources (glucose, xylose, amino acids, etc.) and insoluble sources (cellulose and palmitic acid). Whole soil metabolite profiles varied singularly by time, while the composition of 13C-labeled metabolites differed primarily by carbon source (R2 = 0.68) rather than time (R2 = 0.07), with source-specific differences persisting throughout incubations. The 13C labeling of metabolites from insoluble carbon sources occurred slower than that from soluble sources but yielded a higher average atom percent (atom%) 13C in metabolite markers of biomass (amino acids and nucleic acids). The 13C enrichment of metabolite markers of biomass stabilized between 5 and 15 atom% 13C by the end of incubations. Temporal patterns in the 13C enrichment of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates, nucleobases (uracil and thymine), and by-products of DNA salvage (allantoin) closely tracked microbial activity. Our results demonstrate that metabolite production in soils is driven by the carbon source supplied to the community and that the fate of carbon in metabolites do not generally converge over time as a result of ongoing microbial processing and recycling. IMPORTANCE Carbon metabolism in soil remains poorly described due to the inherent difficulty of obtaining information on the microbial metabolites produced by complex soil communities. Our study demonstrates the use of stable isotope probing (SIP) to study carbon metabolism in soil by tracking 13C from supplied carbon sources into metabolite pools and biomass. We show that differences in the metabolism of sources influence the fate of carbon in soils. Heterogeneity in 13C-labeled metabolite profiles corresponded with compositional differences in the metabolically active populations, providing a basis for how microbial community composition correlates with the quality of soil carbon. Our study demonstrates the application of SIP-metabolomics in studying soils and identifies several metabolite markers of growth, activity, and other aspects of microbial function.

Ice cores from the northwestern Tibetan Plateau (NWTP) contain long records of regional climate variability, but refrozen meltwater and dust in these cores has hampered development of robust timescales. Here, we introduce an approach to dating the ice via the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 in air bubbles (δ18Oatm), along with annual layer counting and radiocarbon dating. We provide a robust chronology for water isotope records (δ18Oice and d-excess) from three ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in the NWTP. The measurement of δ18Oatm, although common in polar ice core timescales, has rarely been used on ice cores from low-latitude, high-altitude glaciers due to (1) low air pressure, (2) the common presence of refrozen melt that adds dissolved gases and reduces the amount of air available for analysis, and (3) the respiratory consumption of molecular oxygen (O2) by micro-organisms in the ice, which fractionates the δ18O of O2 from the atmospheric value. Here, we make corrections for melt and respiration to address these complications. The resulting records of water isotopes from the Guliya ice cores reveal climatic variations over the last 15,000 y, the timings of which correspond to those observed in independently dated lake and speleothem records and confirm that the Guliya ice cap existed before the Holocene. The millennial-scale drivers of δ18Oice are complex and temporally variable; however, Guliya δ18Oice values since the mid-20th century are the highest since the beginning of the Holocene and have increased with regional air temperature.

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) and its reader, writer, and eraser (RWE) proteins assume crucial roles in regulating the splicing, stability, and translation of mRNA. Aside from m6A, RNA is known to carry many other types of chemical modifications; no systematic investigations, however, have been conducted about the crosstalk between m6A and other modified nucleosides in RNA. Here, we modified our recently established liquid chromatography-parallel-reaction monitoring (LC-PRM) method by incorporating stable isotope-labeled (SIL) peptides as internal or surrogate standards for profiling epitranscriptomic RWE proteins. We were able to detect reproducibly a total of 114 RWE proteins in HEK293T cells with the genes encoding m6A eraser proteins (i.e., ALKBH5, FTO) and the catalytic subunit of the major m6A writer complex (i.e., METTL3) being individually ablated. Notably, eight proteins, including writer proteins for 5-methylcytidine and pseudouridine, were altered by more than 1.5-fold in the opposite directions in HEK293T cells depleted of METTL3 and ALKBH5. Analysis of previously published m6A mapping results revealed the presence of m6A in the corresponding mRNAs for four of these proteins. Together, we integrated SIL peptides into our LC-PRM method for quantifying epitranscriptomic RWE proteins, and our work revealed potential crosstalks between m6A and other epitranscriptomic modifications. Our modified LC-PRM method with the use of SIL peptides should be applicable for high-throughput profiling of epitranscriptomic RWE proteins in other cell types and in tissues.

We consider linear isotopes of commutative groups, i.e., central quasigroups and study the invertibility and orthogonality conditions. It turns out that it is sufficient to study these conditions solely for the unitary isotopes, i.e., for isotopes, which have an idempotent. We establish criteria for the possession of each invertibility property (inverse property, crossed inverse property, and mirroring) for unitary central and matrix quasigroups. In particular, for matrices of the second order, we describe the corresponding matrix quasigroups over the fields of characteristics 2 and 3. We studied the alpha decay half-life of Americium isotopes (Z = 9 5) with mass numbers ranging from 223 to 243. Our investigation employed the Coulomb and proximity potential model (CPPM), in addition to alternative analytical and semiempirical formulas. The calculations took into account both experimental and theoretical Q-values, as well as the total alpha kinetic energy. We analyzed the behavior of the hindrance factor concerning changes in the mass numbers of parent nuclei within the range of 223–243, and also examined the impact of magic numbers associated with closed shells. To evaluate the accuracy of our findings, we utilized the SemFIS, UNIV, and Royer formulas to make predictions, which were then compared to the existing experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The equilibrium isotope effect (EIE) of hydrogen isotopes (H and D) on the W electrode in alkaline aqueous (H 2 O) and heavy water (D 2 O) solutions was empirically studied based on the relevant electrochemical adsorption isotherms, which were determined using the phase-shift method and electrochemical impedance spectra. For a fractional surface coverage range of 0.2 < θ < 0.8, the potential differences (Δ E) for hydrogen isotope adsorptions on the W electrode were 70 mV, which were much lower than those on the Ni, Ti, Pd, and Rh electrodes. Furthermore, the value of EIE on the W electrode was 13.4, significantly higher than that on the Ti and most Pt-group metal (Pt, Ir, Pt–Ir alloy, and Rh) electrodes. The W electrode can therefore be considered as a potential electrocatalyst for optimizing the hydrogen and deuterium evolution reactions (HER and DER) and EIE of hydrogen isotopes, particularly in water electrolysis and the hydrogen isotope effect. Isotope effects have received increasing attention in materials science and engineering because altering isotopes directly affects phonons, which can affect both thermal properties and optoelectronic properties of conventional semiconductors. However, how isotopic mass affects the optoelectronic properties in 2D semiconductors remains unclear because of measurement uncertainties resulting from sample heterogeneities. Here, we report an anomalous optical bandgap energy red shift of 13 (±7) milli-electron volts as mass of Mo isotopes is increased in laterally structured 100MoS2-92MoS2 monolayers grown by a two-step chemical vapor deposition that mitigates the effects of heterogeneities. This trend, which is opposite to that observed in conventional semiconductors, is explained by many-body perturbation and time-dependent density functional theories that reveal unusually large exciton binding energy renormalizations exceeding the ground-state renormalization energy due to strong coupling between confined excitons and phonons. The isotope effect on the optical bandgap reported here provides perspective on the important role of exciton-phonon coupling in the physical properties of two-dimensional materials. The three most abundant stable isotopes of Silicon (Si), 28Si, 29Si, and 30Si, all occur in plants. Isotope studies are a potential tool to explore uptake and function of plant Si, and it is a developing field. However, there is a lack of studies from natural environments, and species from the African continent, and all plant parts including reproductive structures. In this study, naturally grown papyrus plants were sampled from the Okavango Delta and divided into five organs, i.e. umbel, culm, scales, rhizome, and roots. Samples were analysed for TN, TOC, BSi, TP concentrations, and for Si isotopes. Each organ of papyrus is represented by two samples, one from juvenile tissue and one mature (apart from the roots where age is difficult to determine). The study confirms that papyrus is a high Si-accumulating species, with BSi ranging from 0.88 % in rhizomes to 6.61 % in roots. High Si precipitation in the roots leads to an enrichment in heavy Si isotopes in the residual mobile Si pool, as light Si isotopes precipitate in phytoliths in the roots, even though in this study phytoliths were identified for all organs except for roots. In papyrus, shoot organs gradually become enriched in heavy Si isotopes along the transpiration stream, with an increase in heavy isotopes from rhizomes to scales, culm, and umbel, same pattern that has been observed for other plants in literature. To investigate water movement in environmental systems, stable water isotopes (2H and 18O) are commonly used tracers. Analyzing the isotopic composition of water bonded to substances like soil or plant tissue necessitates its extraction prior to analysis. One such method, direct vapor equilibration, is popular due to its cost-effectiveness and straightforward sample processing. However, sample analysis requires a significant manual labor, thereby limiting the number of samples that can be analyzed. This limitation is compounded by the fact that stored samples undergo isotopic composition changes over time, and in addition manual measurements may lack objectivity. To address these challenges, we have developed a device that automates the analysis process. Our vapor autosampler for vapour samples, named VapAuSa, features a modular design with up to 350 ports for direct vapor equilibration samples. These ports sequentially connect the prepared samples to the analyzer, enabling continuous automatic measurements. Within the accompanying software, measurement criteria can be specified, facilitating objective analysis. VapAuSa measurements have a similar uncertainty compared to manual analysis of identical samples (VapAuSa δ 2H = +/− 4.5 ‰ δ 18O = +/− 0.58 ‰ vs. manual δ 2H = +/− 5.7 ‰ δ 18O = +/− 0.37 ‰). However, the increased sample throughput minimizes storage-induced isotopic changes. Vapor-water exchange among atmosphere, soil and groundwater plays an important role in the surface ecological restoration in the vadose zones of arid and semiarid regions. However, it is limited to in-situ monitoring of water vapor flux, due to the complex and uncertain process. The simulation of water vapor cannot be fully verified by the measurement. It is still lacking in the vapor-water migration at different spatial and temporal scales. This study aims to clarify the spatiotemporal variation and migration of vapor-water exchange in the vadose zone of Mu Us Sandy Land by in-situ vapor-water monitoring, isotope tracer and numerical analysis. The results showed that the δDL and δ18OL of precipitation were enriched in spring and summer, but depleted in autumn and winter, due to the atmospheric water vapor source and local circulation. Soil evaporation was enriched in the oxygen isotope (δ18Oa ) of surface soil vapor-water in summer more than that of soil freezing in winter. Moreover, there was a significant positive correlation (P<0.01) in the δ18O profile of the soil vapor-water and liquid water at different depths. The reason was that the evaporation intensity source and migration mode of soil vapor-water varied greatly in seasons. The δ18O values of vapor water in spring and summer showed an extremely significant linear positive correlation with the liquid water (P<0.01), while there was no significant correlation in winter (P=0.12). Moreover, there was a positive linear relationship between water vapor flux and δ18Oa . Furthermore, the δ18Oawas enriched in the surface layer at the large water vapor flux, including both downward and upward migration. The surfaceδ18Oa was enriched in the period of soil freezing in winter, particularly with the decrease of water vapor density (November-March). But the surface layer δ18Oa increased in summer (May-October) as well with the increase of surface water vapor density. Driven by the gradient of soil temperature in the vadose zone, the replenishment relationship of water vapor throughout the profile varied greatly at different periods. The water vapor of shallow soil was the supply source of deep vapor-water in summer, while the recharge was received from the deep layer in winter. But there were the temperature convergence and divergence zero flux planes in spring and autumn, respectively. The recharge characteristics caused the complicated relationship of vapor recharge in the profile. The soil δ18Oa was controlled by the water vapor migration, atmospheric evaporation and soil freeze-thaw in the vadose zone. In winter, the reduced evaporation and upward transport of water vapor can concurrently cause to enrich the surfaceδ18Oa, thus resulting in a decrease in the correlation between soil water vaporδ18Oa and liquid water δ18OL. While in summer, the dominant effect can be from the diurnal evaporation and condensation cycle of soil water. We explored whether isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is useful to investigate the origin of falsified antimalarials. Forty-four falsified and genuine antimalarial samples (artesunate, artemether-lumefantrine, dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine and sulphamethopyrazine-pyrimethamine) were analyzed in bulk for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O) element concentrations and stable isotope ratios. The insoluble fraction ("starch") was extracted from 26 samples and analyzed. Samples of known geographical origin maize, a common source of excipient starch, were used to produce a comparison dataset to predict starch source. In both an initial (n = 18) and a follow-on set of samples that contained/claimed to contain artesunate/artemether (n = 26), falsified antimalarials had a range of C concentrations less than genuine comparator antimalarials and δ13C values higher than genuine comparators. The δ13C values of falsified antimalarials suggested that C4 plant-based organic material (e.g., starch derived from maize) had been included. Using the known-origin maize samples, predictions for growth water δ18O values for the extracted "starch" ranged from − 6.10 to − 1.62‰. These findings suggest that IRMS may be a useful tool for profiling falsified antimalarials. We found that C4 ingredients were exclusively used in falsified antimalarials versus genuine antimalarials, and that it may be possible to predict potential growth water δ18O values for the starch present in falsified antimalarials. This study focuses on the Medical Isotope Production Reactor (MIPR), an aqueous homogeneous reactor utilized for synthesizing medical isotopes like 99Mo. The analog of the diterpene precursor geranylgeranyl diphosphate with a double bond shifted from C14=C15 to C15=C16 (named iso‐GGPP III) has been synthesized and enzymatically converted with six bacterial diterpene synthases; this allowed the isolation of nine unnatural diterpenes. For some of the enzyme‐substrate combinations, the different reactivity implemented in the substrate analog iso‐GGPP III opened reaction pathways that are not observed with natural GGPP, resulting in the formation of diterpenes with novel skeletons. Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique for molecule identification that can be used for investigating protein-metal complex interactions. Once the MS data is collected, the mass spectra are usually interpreted manually to identify the adducts formed as a result of the interactions between proteins and metal-based species. However, with increasing resolution, dataset size, and species complexity, the time required to identify adducts and the error-prone nature of manual assignment have become limiting factors in MS analysis. AdductHunter is a open-source web-based analysis tool that automates the peak identification process using constraint integer optimization to find feasible combinations of protein and fragments, and dynamic time warping to calculate the dissimilarity between the theoretical isotope pattern of a species and its experimental isotope peak distribution. The mariculture industry has grown rapidly worldwide over the past few decades. The industry helps meet growing food demands and may provide an effective means of carbon sequestration; however, it may harm the marine ecological environment, and the extent of its impact depends on the type of mariculture. Here we focus on the impact of mariculture on the nutrient status and eutrophication in Sansha Bay, which is a typical aquaculture harbor in southeastern China that employs a combination of shellfish and seaweed farming. Nutrient concentrations and dual nitrate isotopes were measured in Sansha Bay during the winter of 2021. The average concentrations of nitrate and phosphate were 31.3 ± 10.5 and 2.26 ± 0.84 µM, respectively, indicating that the water was in a eutrophic state. However, the N/P ratios were relatively low (14.3 ± 2.2). Nitrate isotope measurements were 8.8‰-11.9‰ for δ15N-NO3 - and 2.2‰-6.0‰ for δ18O-NO3 -. Source analysis based on the nitrate isotope measurements indicates that nitrate in Sansha Bay is derived mainly from the excretion of organisms and sewage discharge from mariculture. The isotopic fractionation model of nitrate assimilation by organisms indicates that surface waters in Sansha Bay experience strong biological uptake of nitrate, which is likely related to seaweed farming in winter. The low N/P ratios may be attributed to excessive nitrogen uptake (relative to phosphorus) during shellfish and seaweed farming, as well as nitrogen removal through sediment denitrification, which is fueled by the sinking of particulate organic matter from mariculture. Overall, our study shows that mariculture activities dominated by shellfish and seaweed cultivation in Sansha Bay may exacerbate eutrophication but reduce N/P ratios in the water column in aquaculture areas. The results of studies of carbonaceous matter (CM) and the S isotopic composition of associated sulfides in metapelites of the Neoarchean banded iron formation of the Kostomuksha greenstone belt of Karelia (Karelian Craton of the Fennoscandinavian Shield) are presented. The petrographic observations show that the CM occurs inside and between silicates, in sulfides, or at the grain boundaries between the sulfide crystals and biotite or amphibole. The results of scanning electron and atomic force microscopy showed the presence of several CM types distinct in structure and C content. The analysis of Raman spectra of CM revealed the presence both of well-ordered graphite and weakly structured kerogene in samples. The isotopic composition of the total organic carbon is typical of biogenic processes. The δ13Corg values from –27.9 to –30.6‰ are consistent with the fixation of carbon by photo- or chemoautotrophs. The S isotopic composition of associated sulfides is characterized by a positive Δ33S anomaly (up to +0.94‰) and negative δ34S values (from –2.06 to –4.1‰). The positive Δ33S values indicate a genetic link with photochemical elemental sulfur (S8) from the atmosphere, whereas the negative δ34S values reflect the fractionation of isotopes during bacterial-related processes. The paper reports the results of U–Pb dating, Nd–Sr–Pb isotope systematics, and geochemical study of quartz diorites associated with ore-bearing (Cu–Pd–Au–Ag) gabbro of the Volkovsky massif, which is localized within the Urals Platinum Belt, at its eastern border with the Silurian–Devonian volcanogenic complexes of the Tagil megazone. The age of the quartz diorites according to U–Pb (TIMS) dating is 429 ± 9 Ma, MSWD = 0.009. Sr–Nd–Pb isotope characteristics (εNd(T) = +5.5...+6.7; (87Sr/86Sr)t = 0.70382–0.70392; 206Pb/204Pb = 18.38–18.57; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.56–15.58; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.14–38.30) indicate a juvenile source with a model age of 570–760 Ma. The obtained data fall within values typical of basalts of ensimatic island arcs. The geochemical features of the granitoids of the Volkovsky massif (low REE concentration, differentiated REE pattern (La/Yb = 8–14) with a weak positive Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.9–1.4)) are consistent with the characteristics of melts obtained in experiments on hydrous melting of mafic rocks in equilibrium with amphibole–pyroxene residue. The anomalous concentration of strontium (more than 1000 ppm) in the quartz diorites is due to the high content of this element in a source. Such source could be the oldest rocks of the Urals Platinum Belt—olivine gabbro and metamorphic rocks of their surroundings. The identical ages of the quartz diorites of the Volkovsky massif and monzonitoids of the Kushvinsky massif allow us to consider these rocks as the result of the almost simultaneous mantle and crust melting at the final stage of the formation of the Tagil island-arc system.
