Publisher Copyright: IEEE Objective: The objective clinical evaluation of user's capabilities to handle their prosthesis is done using various tests which primarily focus on the task completion speed and do not explicitly account for the potential presence of compensatory motions. Given that the excessive body compensation is a common indicator of inadequate prosthesis control, tests which include subjective observations on the quality of performed motions have been introduced. However, these metrics are then influenced by the examiner's opinions, skills, and training making them harder to standardize across patient pools and compare across different prosthetic technologies. Here we aim to objectively quantify the severity of body compensations present in myoelectric prosthetic hand users and evaluate the extent to which traditional objective clinical scores are still able to capture them. Methods: We have instructed 9 below-elbow prosthesis users and 9 able-bodied participants to complete three established objective clinical tests: Box-and-Blocks-Test, Clothespin-Relocation-Test, and Southampton-Hand-Assessment-Procedure. During all tests, upper-body kinematics has been recorded. Results: While the analysis showed that there are some correlations between the achieved clinical scores and the individual body segment travel distances and average speeds, there were only weak correlations between the clinical scores and the observed ranges of motion. At the same time, the compensations were observed in all prosthesis users and, for the most part, they were substantial across the tests. Conclusion: The sole reliance on the currently available objective clinical assessment methods seems inadequate as the compensatory movements are prominent in prosthesis users and yet not sufficiently accounted for.

Electrical neuromodulation is an approved therapy for a number of neurologic disease states, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Essential Tremor, epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Neuromodulatory strategies are also being piloted for an increasing number of additional indications, including Major Depressive Disorder, Dystonia, and addiction. The development of implantable devices capable of both neural sensing and adaptive stimulation may prove essential for both improving therapeutic outcomes and expanding the neuromodulation indication space. Nevertheless, an increasingly fragmented device ecosystem forces researchers and therapy developers to customize and reinvent data visualization, clinician engagement, and device control software to support individual clinical studies. Each hardware platform provides a unique software interface to the implanted neurostimulator, making pre-existing code from prior studies difficult to leverage for future work ‐‐ a hindrance that will expand as device technology diversifies. Here, we envision, detail, and demonstrate the use of a novel software architecture, OMNI, that accelerates neuromodulation research by providing a flexible, platform- and device-agnostic interface for clinical research and therapy development.

Nuclear fusion research requires the production of high-temperature plasma. One of the plasma heating methods is the use of radio frequency (RF) waves. The RF wave heating system uses a high-power amplifier, which poses a concern about the leakage electromagnetic fields. Therefore, a new wide-area multipoint electromagnetic monitoring system using personal RF monitors has been developed. The developed monitoring system was applied to the megawatt-class amplifiers for the “ion cyclotron range of frequency” (ICRF) heating system in the frequency range of ion cyclotron resonance from 30 to 40 MHz. As a result, the leakage magnetic field was less than the measurement sensitivity during the plasma experiment, in which the leakage electric field was detected with sufficient sensitivity. The leakage electric field becomes larger as the RF forward power increases, and thus the electric field would be radiated through the stub and/or high voltage supply line connected to the anode of tetrode in the ICRF amplifier. The electric field around the ICRF amplifiers did not exceed the reference level of International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The developed wide-area multipoint monitoring system will be useful for monitoring the leakage RF electromagnetic fields around the ICRF heating system at the future fusion devices.
