Abstract

We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry A{sub 1} on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton ({sup 15}NH{sub 3}) and deuteron ({sup 15}ND{sub 3}) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present paper, we concentrate on our results for A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) and the related ratio g{sub 1}/F{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) in the resonance and the deep inelastic regions for our lowest and highest beam energies, covering a range in momentum transfer Q{sup 2} from 0.05 to 5.0 GeV{sup 2} and in final-state invariant mass W up to about 3 GeV. Our data show detailed structure in the resonance region, which leads to a strong Q{sup 2}--dependence of A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) for W below 2 GeV. At higher W, a smooth approach to the scaling limit, established by earlier experiments, can be seen, but A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) is not strictly Q{sup 2}--independent. We add significantly to the world data set at high x, up to x = 0.6. Our data exceed the SU(6)-symmetric quark model expectation for both the proton and the deuteron whilemore » being consistent with a negative d-quark polarization up to our highest x. This data set should improve next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD fits of the parton polarization distributions.« less

Abstract

This paper focuses on the design and evaluation of SARA, a conversational agent for the touristic domain featuring a high number of different, unique characteristics: spoken dialogue interaction, dialogue orchestration, context dependent information, an animated avatar and support for different kind of dialogue types, i.e. chat, specific and general question-answering, task oriented dialogues. The agent has currently two implementations: as web client and as mobile phone application. The paper describes the modules and resources required for running the agent on both interfaces, as well as the evaluation results obtained from two assessment studies concerning the interaction design of these two agent interfaces. The feedback gathered from the studies will enable us to improve the applications in terms of service, performance and usability.

Abstract

The MINERνA experiment at Fermilab will use a fully-active scintillator based fine grained neutrino detector and the high rate NuMI neutrino beam. MINERνA will measure low energy neutrino interaction properties and cross sections to a new level of precision. These measurements will be critical input to present and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments in this energy range.

Abstract

In this study, we measured the ratios of electroproduction cross sections from a proton target for three exclusive meson-baryon final states: ΛK+, pπ0, and nπ+, with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Using a simple model of quark hadronization, we extract qq¯ creation probabilities for the first time in exclusive two-body production, in which only a single qq¯ pair is created. We observe a sizable suppression of strange quark-antiquark pairs compared to nonstrange pairs, similar to that seen in high-energy production.

Abstract

Since the pioneering experiment E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e, e’K+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet (E05-115) were added to produce new data sets of precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. All three experiments obtained a spectrum for 12B-Lambda, which is the most characteristic p-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the (e, e’K+) reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed 12B-Lambda spectrum.

Abstract

The aim of this ethnographic study was to understand welding practices in shipyard environments with the purpose of designing an interactive welding robot that can help workers with their daily job. The robot is meant to be deployed for automatic welding on jack-up rig structures. The design of the robot turns out to be a challenging task due to several problematic working conditions on the shipyard, such as dust, irregular floor, high temperature, wind variations, elevated working platforms, narrow spaces, and circular welding paths requiring a robotic arm with more than 6 degrees of freedom. Additionally, the environment is very noisy and the workers – mostly foreigners – have a very basic level of English. These two issues need to be taken into account when designing the interactive user interface for the robot. Ideally, the communication flow between the two parties involved should be as frictionless as possible. The paper presents the results of our field observations and welders’ interviews, as well as our robot design recommendation for the next project stage.

Abstract

The inclusive polarized structure functions of the proton and deuteron, g(1)(p) and g(1)(d) , were measured with high statistical precision using polarized 6 GeV electrons incident on a polarized ammonia target in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory. Electrons scattered at laboratory angles between 18 and 45 degrees were detected using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). For the usual deep inelastic region kinematics, Q(2) > 1 GeV2 and the final-state invariant mass W > 2 GeV, the ratio of polarized to unpolarized structure functions g(1)/F-1 is found to be nearly independent of Q(2) at fixed x. Significant resonant structure is apparent at values of W up to 2.3 GeV. In the framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics, the high-W results can be used to better constrain the polarization of quarks and gluons in the nucleon, as well as high-twist contributions.

Abstract

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction (ep-->e'p'pi0) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d4sigma/dtdQ2dxBdphipi and structure functions sigmaT+epsilonsigmaL,sigmaTT and σLT as functions of t were obtained over a wide range of Q2 and xB. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

Abstract

High-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and spin density matrix elements for the reaction γ p → ϕ p have been made using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass energies ( s ) from 1.97 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the ϕ production angle. The high statistics of the data sample made it necessary to carefully account for the interplay between the ϕ natural lineshape and effects of the detector resolution, that are found to be comparable in magnitude. We study both the charged- ( ϕ → K + K − ) and neutral- ( ϕ → K S 0 K L 0 ) K K ¯ decay modes of the ϕ . Further, for the charged mode, we differentiate between the cases where the final K − track is directly detected or its momentum reconstructed as the total missing momentum in the event. The two charged-mode topologies and the neutral-mode have different resolutions and are calibrated against each other. Extensive usage is made of kinematic fitting to improve the reconstructed ϕ mass resolution. Our final results are reported in 10- and mostly 30-MeV-wide s bins for the charged- and the neutral-modes, respectively. Possible effects from K + Λ * channels with p K K ¯ final states are discussed. These present results constitute the most precise and extensive ϕ photoproduction measurements to date and in conjunction with the ω photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, will greatly improve our understanding of low energy vector meson photoproduction.

Abstract

Background: Much less is known about neutron structure than that of the proton due to the absence of free neutron targets. Neutron information is usually extracted from data on nuclear targets such as deuterium, requiring corrections for nuclear binding and nucleon off-shell effects. These corrections are model dependent and have significant uncertainties, especially for large values of the Bjorken scaling variable x . As a consequence, the same data can lead to different conclusions, for example, about the behavior of the d quark distribution in the proton at large x . Purpose: The Barely Off-shell Nucleon Structure experiment at Jefferson Lab measured the inelastic electron-deuteron scattering cross section, tagging spectator protons in coincidence with the scattered electrons. This method reduces nuclear binding uncertainties significantly and has allowed for the first time a (nearly) model-independent extraction of the neutron structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) in the resonance and deep-inelastic regions. Method: A novel compact radial time projection chamber was built to detect protons with momentum between 70 and 150 MeV / c and over a nearly 4 π angular range. For the extraction of the free-neutron structure function F 2 n , spectator protons at backward angles ( > 100 ∘ relative to the momentum transfer) and with momenta below 100 MeV / c were selected, ensuring that the scattering took place on a nearly free neutron. The scattered electrons were detected with Jefferson Lab's CLAS spectrometer, with data taken at beam energies near 2, 4, and 5 GeV. Results: The extracted neutron structure function F 2 n and its ratio to the inclusive deuteron structure function F 2 d are presented in both the resonance and the deep-inelastic regions for momentum transfer squared Q 2 between 0.7 and 5 GeV 2 / c 2 , invariant mass W between 1 and 2.7 GeV / c 2 , and Bjorken x between 0.25 and 0.6 (in the deep-inelastic scattering region). The dependence of the semi-inclusive cross section on the spectator proton momentum and angle is investigated, and tests of the spectator mechanism for different kinematics are performed. Conclusions: Our data set on the structure function ratio F 2 n / F 2 d can be used to study neutron resonance excitations, test quark-hadron duality in the neutron, develop more precise parametrizations of structure functions, and investigate binding effects (including possible mechanisms for the nuclear EMC effect) and provide a first glimpse of the asymptotic behavior of d / u at x → 1 .

Abstract

A Lambda hyperon which has a strangeness can be bound in deep inside of a nucleus since a Lambda does not suffer from the Pauli exclusion principle from nucleons. Thus, a Lambda could be a useful tool to investigate inside of a nucleus. Since 2000, Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopic experiments by the (e, e'K+) reaction have been performed at the experimental Hall C in Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab Hall C). An experiment, JLab E05-115 was carried out to investigate Lambda hypernuclei with a wide mass range (the mass number, A = 7, 9, 10, 12, 52). The latest analysis status of JLab E05-115 experiment is discussed in the present article.

Abstract

The atomic nucleus is composed of two different kinds of fermions, protons and neutrons. If the protons and neutrons did not interact, the Pauli exclusion principle would force the majority fermions (usually neutrons) to have a higher average momentum. Our high-energy electron scattering measurements using 12C, 27Al, 56Fe and 208Pb targets show that, even in heavy neutron-rich nuclei, short-range interactions between the fermions form correlated high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. Thus, in neutron-rich nuclei, protons have a greater probability than neutrons to have momentum greater than the Fermi momentum. This finding has implications ranging from nuclear few body systems to neutron stars and may also be observable experimentally in two-spin state, ultra-cold atomic gas systems., Comment: Published in Science. 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The capability of communicating in natural language as well as manifesting responsive behavior is fundamental in social communities. In this extended abstract, we present our work in progress towards creating a natural language interface for a robot welder that will use natural language to manifest responsive behavior in interaction with human workers. Based on the results of two data collections we argue that these robot capabilities can be highly beneficial in industrial environments, enhancing the human-robot communication and contributing to a shift in the interaction paradigm from industrial towards social.

Abstract

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction ($ep\to e^\prime p^\prime \pi^0$) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4\sigma/dtdQ^2dx_Bd\phi_\pi$ and structure functions $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

Abstract

See paper for full list of authors; We report the first measurement of the photoproduction cross section of the $\phi$ meson in its neutral decay mode in the reaction $\gamma p \to p\phi(K_SK_L)$. The experiment was performed with a tagged photon beam of energy $1.6 \le E_\gamma \le 3.6$ GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target of the CLAS spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The $p \phi$ final state is identified via reconstruction of $K_S$ in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions and by requiring the missing particle in the reaction $\gamma p \to p K_S X$ to be $K_L$. The presented results significantly enlarge the existing data on $\phi$-photoproduction. These data, combined with the data from the charged decay mode, will help to constrain different mechanisms of $\phi$ photoproduction.

Abstract

We have measured the moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ corresponding to the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in SIDIS. $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ is a twist-3 quantity providing information about quark-gluon correlations. Data were taken with the CLAS Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab using a 5.498 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. All three pion channels ($\pi^+$, $\pi^0$ and $\pi^-$) were measured simultaneously over a large range of kinematics within the virtuality range $Q^2 \approx$ 1.0-4.5 GeV$^2$. The observable was measured with better than 1% statistical precision over a large range of $z$, $P_T$, $x_B$, and $Q^{2}$, which permits comparison with several reaction models. The discussed measurements provide an upgrade in statistics over previous measurements, and serve as the first evidence for the negative sign of the $\pi^{-}$ $\sin\phi$ moment., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

In this paper we describe SARA, a multimodal dialogue system offering touristic assistance for visitors coming to Singapore. The system is implemented as an Android mobile phone application and provides information about local attractions, restaurants, sightseeing, direction and transportation services. SARA is able to detect the user’s location on a map by using a GPS integrated module and accordingly can provide real-time orientation and direction help. To communicate with SARA users can use speech, text or scanned QR code. Input/output modalities for SARA include natural language in form of speech or text. Currently, the system supports only English, but we are working towards a multi-lingual input/output support. Abstract

The A(e,e{prime}K{sup +})YX reaction on H, D, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He was investigated in Hall C at CEBAF. Data were obtained for Q{sup 2} {approx} 0.35 and 0.5 GeV{sup 2} at 3.245 GeV. The missing mass spectra for both H and D are fitted with Monte-Carlo simulations incorporating peaks corresponding to {Lambda} production on the proton and {Sigma} production on both the proton and neutron. For D, the cross section ratio {Sigma}{sup 0}/{Sigma}{sup {minus}} {approx} 2, and excess yield close to the thresholds for {Lambda} and {Sigma} production can be attributed to final-state interactions that are compared to the data. The analysis of the data for the He targets is in a more preliminary state with broader quasi-free peaks resulting from the higher Fermi momenta. Evidence for bound {Lambda}-hypernuclear states is seen and other structure may be present.

Abstract

A detailed investigation of the basic hyperon-nucleon interactions in nuclei is one of the aims of Experiment 91-016, approved with high priority at CEBAF, to study the electroproduction of kaons on targets of deuterium, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He. Inasmuch as both the electron and K{sup +} are particles that interact relatively weakly with nucleons, electroproduction of light hypernuclei provides a low-distortion method for investigating the fundamental interactions between nucleons, {Alpha}`s, and {Epsilon}`s in few-body systems. In particular, the (e,e`K{sup +}) reactions on cryogenic targets of D, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He will be studied at incident electron energies near 3 GeV with coincident detection of the emergent e and K{sup +} in the HMS and SOS magnetic spectrometers in Hall C. Construction of the He target, operating at {approximately}10 atm, {approximately}50 K and capable of dissipating {approximately}30 W, is expected to be complete prior to commencement of production runs in Hall C. The first data runs for E91-016, expected to begin late in FY 1995, will also be the basis for a doctoral thesis at Hampton University. In addition to providing new information on the phases of hyperon-nucleon interactions, measurements of cross sections for hypernuclear formation, and interference phenomena,more » the data may provide evidence for the presence of bound {Epsilon}`s and strange di-baryonic states that are the subject of considerable theoretical discussion.« less

Abstract

Smart cities technologies are gradually changing our urban landscape thanks to the proliferation of billions of smart devices permanently connected through the internet. Among technologies with highest impact on citizen’s quality of life are intelligent transportation systems and in particular, smart parking applications. In this paper, we present a study evaluation the design of a smart parking assistant developed in our lab. The system is implemented as mobile app with an integrated GUI adapted for Android tablets. The app extends common park guidance information systems (PGI) offering suggestions based on parking fee or proximity to destination. Two novel features – beyond the state of the art of current available systems – are added: the use of natural language and the ability to react in real-time to changes in parking occupancy. If the number of parking lots drops to critical level, the application redirects the driver to another parking place. Furthermore, the app includes GPS and Google maps interfacing modules which enable the application to detect the driver location and calculate the nearest car park distance. A group of five experts with background in interface design and natural language processing evaluated the prototype using Nielsen’s set of heuristics in a think-loud approach. Results and implications for further interaction design are extensively discussed.

Abstract

Beam asymmetries for the reactions $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged, linearly polarized photon beam with energies from 1.102--1.862 GeV. A Fourier moment technique for extracting beam asymmetries from experimental data is described. The results reported here possess greater precision and finer energy resolution than previous measurements. Our data for both pion reactions appear to favor the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina scattering analyses over the older Mainz MAID predictions. After incorporating the present set of beam asymmetries into the world database, exploratory fits made with the SAID analysis indicate that the largest changes from previous fits are for properties of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1700)3/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1905)5/{2}^{+}$ states.

Abstract

A newly obtained data sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering from both hydrogen and deuterium targets is analyzed. These JLab data span the nucleon resonance region up to four-momentum transfers of 5 (GeV/c){sup 2} . The data are found to follow an average scaling curve. The inclusion of low-momentum transfer data yields a scaling curve resembling deep inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data, suggesting a sensitivity to valencelike structure only. Abstract

Jefferson Lab experiment E94-014 measured the excitation of the Delta (1232) resonance via the reaction p(e,e{prime}p){pi}{sup 0} at Q{sup 2} near 2.8 and 4 Gev{sup 2}. This is the highest Q{sup 2} for which exclusive resonance electroproduction has ever been observed. Decay distributions of the Delta (1232) resonance into the ppi{sup 0} final state were measured over a wide range of barycentric decay angles and energies. The goal of this experiment is to assess the transition in Q{sup 2} from the constituent quark model (CQM) to the regime where hard processes become important. At Q{sup 2} {approx} few GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2} the ratio E{sub 1+}/M{sub 1+} depends dramatically on the theoretical description, varying from a few 10{sup -2} in the CQM limit, to about 1 in the pQCD limit. Preliminary analysis of the data shows that the ratio E{sub 1+}/M{sub 1+} remains small at Q{sup 2} up to 4 Gev{sup 2}/c{sup 2}. After first pass analysis we obtain E{sub 1+}/M{sub 1+} = -4.1 {+-} 1.2 at Q{sup 2} = 2.8 Gev{sup 2}/c{sup 2} and E{sub 1+}/M{sub 1+} = -7.9 {+-} 0.8 at Q{sup 2} = 4 Gev{sup 2}/c{sup 2} (statistical errors only).

Abstract

The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(gamma,p)n reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. We report the cross sections at the proton center-of-mass angles of 36, 52, 69 and 89 degrees. These results are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89 and 69 degree data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon energy. The 36 and 52 degree data disagree with the counting rule behavior. The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model of nuclear reactions involving reduced amplitudes disagrees with the present data., Comment: 5 pages (REVTeX), 1 figure (postscript)

Abstract

The 1 H(e, e′K + )Λ and 1 H(e,e′K + )Σ 0 reactions were studied as a function of the squared four-momentum-transfer, Q 2 , and the virtual photon polarization, e, thus enabling the separation of the longitudinal and transverse parts of the cross section. The existence of a sizable longitudinal component for the 1 H(e,e′K + )Λ reaction seems to be indicated by these data.

Abstract

The (e,e'p) reaction was studies on targets of C, Fe, and Au at momentum transfers squared Q{sup 2} of 0.6, 1.3, 1.8 and 3.3 GeV{sup 2} in a region of kinematics dominated by quasifree electron-proton scattering. Missing energy and missing momentum distributions are reasonably well described by plane wave impulse approximation calculations with Q{sup 2} and A dependent corrections that measure the attenuation of the final state protons.

Abstract

A complete set of spin observables was measured for the 2 H(p,n)2p reaction at 200 MeV at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) with the high intensity polarized ion source (HIPIOS) and the Indiana Neutron Polarization Facility (INPOL). The incident proton beam was delivered successively in each of the three spin states, normal ( N ), sideways ( S ), and longitudinal ( L ). Two large-volume neutron polarimeters placed along the 0° and 24° beam lines measured the polarizations of the emitted neutrons in each of the three spin states. The measured cross sections and spin observables are compared with three-body Faddeev calculations, which generally agree with the data. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse response is suppressed rather than enhanced, as predicted by some models.

Abstract

We measured the analyzing power and the efficiency of a new neutron polarimeter that was designed to measure G/sub E//sup n/, the neutron electric form factor. The polarimeter calibration was performed as experiment E377 at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) with the /sup 14/C(p/spl I.oarr/,n/spl I.oarr/)/sup 14/N reaction at proton beam energies of 124.0, 164.6, and 199.7 MeV without any shielding material ahead of the polarimeter; in addition, at 164.6 MeV we measured the analyzing power with 10 cm of lead, sandwiched between 3.5-cm iron plates, ahead of the polarimeter.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the line shape of the $\Lambda(1405)$ from electroproduction, and show that it is not a simple Breit-Wigner resonance. Electroproduction of $K^+ \Lambda(1405)$ off the proton was studied by using data from CLAS at Jefferson Lab in the range $1.0, Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We report the exclusive photoproduction cross sections for the Sigma(1385), Lambda(1405), and Lambda(1520) in the reactions gamma + p -> K+ + Y* using the CLAS detector for energies from near the respective production thresholds up to a center-of-mass energy W of 2.85 GeV. The differential cross sections are integrated to give the total exclusive cross sections for each hyperon. Comparisons are made to current theoretical models based on the effective Lagrangian approach and fitted to previous data. The accuracy of these models is seen to vary widely. The cross sections for the Lambda(1405) region are strikingly different for the Sigma+pi-, Sigma0 pi0, and Sigma- pi+ decay channels, indicating the effect of isospin interference, especially at W values close to the threshold.

Abstract

Background: The discrepancy between proton electromagnetic form factors extracted using unpolarized and polarized scattering data is believed to be a consequence of two-photon exchange (TPE) effects. However, the calculations of TPE corrections have significant model dependence, and there is limited direct experimental evidence for such corrections. Purpose: The TPE contributions depend on the sign of the lepton charge in e(+/-)p scattering, but the luminosities of secondary positron beams limited past measurement at large scattering angles, where the TPE effects are believe to be most significant. We present the results of a new experimental technique for making direct e(+/-)p comparisons, which has the potential to make precise measurements over a broad range in Q(2) and scattering angles. Methods: We use the Jefferson Laboratory electron beam and the Hall B photon tagger to generate a clean but untagged photon beam. The photon beam impinges on a converter foil to generate a mixed beam of electrons, positrons, and photons. A chicane is used to separate and recombine the electron and positron beams while the photon beam is stopped by a photon blocker. This provides a combined electron and positron beam, with energies from 0.5 to 3.2 GeV, which impinges on a liquid hydrogen target. The large acceptance CLAS detector is used to identify and reconstruct elastic scattering events, determining both the initial lepton energy and the sign of the scattered lepton. Results: The data were collected in two days with a primary electron beam energy of only 3.3 GeV, limiting the data from this run to smaller values of Q(2) and scattering angle. Nonetheless, this measurement yields a data sample for e(+/-)p with statistics comparable to those of the best previous measurements. We have shown that we can cleanly identify elastic scattering events and correct for the difference in acceptance for electron and positron scattering. Because we ran with only one polarity for the chicane, we are unable to study the difference between the incoming electron and positron beams. This systematic effect leads to the largest uncertainty in the final ratio of positron to electron scattering: R = 1.027 +/- 0.005 +/- 0.05 for = 0.206 GeV2 and 0.830

Abstract

The first high-statistics cross sections for the reactions γp→K*+Λ and γp→K*+Σ0 were measured using the CLAS detector at photon energies between threshold and 3.9 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Differential cross sections are presented over the full range of the center-of-mass angles, and then fitted to Legendre polynomials to extract the total cross section. Results for the K*+Λ final state are compared with two different calculations in an isobar and a Regge model, respectively. Theoretical calculations significantly underestimate the K*+Λ total cross sections between 2.1 and 2.6 GeV, but are in better agreement with present data at higher photon energies.

Abstract

The MINERvA 6 experiment is designed to perform precision studies of neutrino-nucleus scattering using ν μ and ν ¯ μ neutrinos incident at 1–20 GeV in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. This article presents a detailed description of the MINERvA detector and describes the ex situ and in situ techniques employed to characterize the detector and monitor its performance. The detector is composed of a finely segmented scintillator-based inner tracking region surrounded by electromagnetic and hadronic sampling calorimetry. The upstream portion of the detector includes planes of graphite, iron and lead interleaved between tracking planes to facilitate the study of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. Observations concerning the detector response over sustained periods of running are reported. The detector design and methods of operation have relevance to future neutrino experiments in which segmented scintillator tracking is utilized.

Abstract

We have isolated muon anti-neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic interactions occurring in the segmented scintillator tracking region of the MINERvA detector running in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. We measure the flux-averaged differential cross-section, d{\sigma}/dQ^2, and compare to several theoretical models of quasi-elastic scattering. Good agreement is obtained with a model where the nucleon axial mass, M_A, is set to 0.99 GeV/c^2 but the nucleon vector form factors are modified to account for the observed enhancement, relative to the free nucleon case, of the cross-section for the exchange of transversely polarized photons in electron-nucleus scattering. Our data at higher Q^2 favor this interpretation over an alternative in which the axial mass is increased., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Experimental results on the $$\Sigma^+(1189)$$ hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson laboratory are presented. The $$\Sigma^+(1189)$$ was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction $$\gamma+p\rightarrow K^{0}_{S} + \Sigma^+(1189)$$ via the $$\Sigma^{+} \to p \pi^{0}$$ decay mode. The $$K^{0}_S$$ was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the $$\pi^0$$ identified in the missing mass of the detected $$p\pi^+\pi^-$$ final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range $$E_{\gamma}$$ = 1.0-3.5 GeV ($$\sqrt{s}$$ range 1.66-2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization of up to 95%. As the mechanism of transverse polarization of hyperons produced in unpolarized photoproduction experiments is still not well understood, these results will help to distinguish between different theoretical models on hyperon production and provide valuable information for the searches of missing baryon resonances.

Abstract

The reaction {gamma} + p -> K{sup +} + {Sigma} + {p}i was used to determine the invariant mass distributions or "line shapes" of the {Sigma}{sup +} {pi}{sup -}, {Sigma}{sup -} {pi}{sup +} and {Sigma}{sup 0} {pi}{sup 0} final states, from threshold at 1328 MeV/c^2 through the mass range of the {Lambda}(1405) and the {Lambda}(1520). The measurements were made with the CLAS system at Jefferson Lab using tagged real photons, for center-of-mass energies 1.95 < W < 2.85 GeV. The three mass distributions differ strongly in the vicinity of the I=0 {Lambda}(1405), indicating the presence of substantial I=1 strength in the reaction. Background contributions to the data from the {Sigma}{sup 0}(1385) and from K* {Sigma} production were studied and shown to have negligible influence. To separate the isospin amplitudes, Breit-Wigner model fits were made that included channel-coupling distortions due to the Nkbar threshold. A best fit to all the data was obtained after including a phenomenological I=1, J{sup P} = 1/2{sup -} amplitude with a centroid at 1394\pm20 MeV/c^2 and a second I=1 amplitude at 1413\pm10 MeV/c^2. The centroid of the I=0 {Lambda}(1405) strength was found at the {Sigma} {pi} threshold, with the observed shape determined largely by channel-coupling, leadingmore » to an apparent overall peak near 1405 MeV/c^2.« less

Abstract

We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of K{sup +}{Lambda} and K{sup +}{Sigma}{sup 0} final states from an unpolarized proton target using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions {sigma}{sub U}, {sigma}{sub LT}, {sigma}{sub TT}, and {sigma}{sub LT'} were extracted from the {Phi}-dependent differential cross sections acquired with a longitudinally polarized 5.499~GeV electron beam. The data span a broad range of momentum transfers Q{sup 2} from 1.4 to 3.9 GeV{sup 2}, invariant energy W from threshold to 2.6 GeV, and nearly the full center-of-mass angular range of the kaon. The separated structure functions provide an unprecedented data sample, which in conjunction with other meson photo- and electroproduction data, will help to constrain the higher-level analyses being performed to search for missing baryon resonances.

Abstract

An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, (Λ)(7)He, was observed for the first time with the (e, e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. The (Λ)(7)He binding energy supplies the last missing information of the A = 7, T = 1 hypernuclear isotriplet, providing a new input for the charge symmetry breaking effect of the ΛN potential.

Abstract

The exclusive electroproduction of $\pi^+$ above the resonance region was studied using the $\rm{CEBAF}$ Large Acceptance Spectrometer ($\rm{CLAS}$) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of $\rm{CLAS}$, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the $\gamma^* p \to n \pi^+$ process in 140 ($Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$) bins: $0.16, Comment: 18pages, 21figures,2tables

Abstract

We have measured cross sections for the {gamma}+{sup 3}He->p+d reaction at photon energies of 0.4 - 1.4 GeV and a center-of-mass angle of 90 deg. We observe dimensional scaling above 0.7 GeV at this center-of-mass angle. This is the first observation of dimensional scaling in the photodisintegration of a nucleus heavier than the deuteron.

Abstract

We report the measurement of near threshold neutral pion electroproduction cross sections and the extraction of the associated structure functions on the proton in the kinematic range $Q^2$ from 2 to 4.5 GeV$^2$ and $W$ from 1.08 to 1.16 GeV. These measurements allow us to access the dominant pion-nucleon s-wave multipoles $E_{0+}$ and $S_{0+}$ in the near-threshold region. In the light-cone sum-rule framework (LCSR), these multipoles are related to the generalized form factors $G_1^{\pi^0 p}(Q^2)$ and $G_2^{\pi^0 p}(Q^2)$. The data are compared to these generalized form factors and the results for $G_1^{\pi^0 p}(Q^2)$ are found to be in good agreement with the LCSR predictions, but the level of agreement with $G_2^{\pi^0 p}(Q^2)$ is poor., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, Journal article (Physical Review C)

Abstract

Nuclear transparency, Tp(A), is a measure of the average probability for a struck proton to escape the nucleus without significant re-interaction. Previously, nuclear transparencies were extructed for quasi-elastic A(e,e'p) knockout of protons with momentum below the Fermi momentum, where the spectral functions are well known. In this paper we extract a novel observable, the transparency ratio, Tp(A)/T_p(12C), for knockout of high-missing-momentum protons from the breakup of short range correlated pairs (2N-SRC) in Al, Fe and Pb nuclei relative to C. The ratios were measured at momentum transfer Q^2 > 1.5 (GeV/c)^2 and x_B > 1.2 where the reaction is expected to be dominated by electron scattering from 2N-SRC. The transparency ratios of the knocked-out protons coming from 2N-SRC breakup are 20 - 30% lower than those of previous results for low missing momentum. They agree with Glauber calculations and agree with renormalization of the previously published transparencies as proposed by recent theoretical investigations. The new transparencies scale as A^-1/3, which is consistent with dominance of scattering from nucleons at the nuclear surface., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy (GDEPT) is a two step gene therapy approach where the gene for a non-endogenous enzyme is directed to target tissues. The enzyme is expressed intracellularly where it is able to activate a subsequently administered prodrug. It is a promising new treatment for cancer chemotherapy. The design and synthesis of prodrugs able to undergo intracellular enzymic activation by foreign genes in such systems is an essential component. This review will focus on the requirements to be fulfilled by the prodrugs used in this system. A special emphasis is placed on the description of the prodrugs (antimetabolites and alkylating agents) used in GDEPT protocols. The bystander effect and its implications for the design of improved prodrugs for GDEPT is also discussed.

Abstract

Antibody-Directed Enzyme Prodrug Therapy (ADEPT) is a targeting approach designed to improve the selectivity of anticancer drugs and to enable higher concentrations of drug to be generated at the target tumour than are currently possible with classical chemotherapy. ADEPT separates the cytotoxic from the targeting function of chemoimmunoconjugates in a multi-step system that has benefits over a one step chemo-, toxin- or radio-immunoconjugate. This review, whilst discussing the basic principles of ADEPT and the main requirements for all the components (enzymes, prodrugs and antibodies) of the systems, also summarises the latest results in the design and synthesis of prodrugs belonging to the main categories of anticancer compounds. The main features of ADEPT, such as targeting of cancer cells by the antibody-enzyme conjugates, enzymatic activation of the prodrugs, selection of the prodrug/drug and enzyme/prodrug systems are examined. Abstract

In Ref. [1], the authors claim to observe a narrow structure in the mass spectrum constructed from the (pK_L) system using data from the CLAS detector. The interpretation of this narrow structure given in Ref. [1] is as follows: “It may be due to the photoproduction of the Theta+ pentaquark or some unknown Sigma∗ resonance.” The authors go on to say that “it is unlikely for the observed structure to be due to a Sigma∗ resonance.” This analysis was reviewed by the CLAS Collaboration, following the established procedures for all CLAS papers, and did not receive approval. The purpose of this Comment is to explain the reasons why that analysis was not approved for publication.

Abstract

The multiwire drift chambers to be used in the High Momentum Spectrometer (HMS) at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) have been designed and constructed, and recently employed in initial data-taking runs. These chambers are used to reconstruct scattered charged particle momenta in the HMS using 12 C and BeO 2 targets for incident electron energies up to 2.2 GeV. Offline analysis of the data indicate that these drift chambers have spatial resolution (per plane) of about 115 μm (σ) in rates approaching a kHz/wire/mm. It is expected that this performance will improve at higher momenta where multiple scattering contributions are smaller.
