Abstract

Variations in the electronic structure and structural distortion in multiferroic DyMnO3 were probed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, lifetime-broadening-suppressed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and ab initio electronic structure calculations. The refined x-ray diffraction data enabled an observation of a diminished local Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn sites within MnO6 octahedra in DyMnO3 on applying the hydrostatic pressure. The intensity of the white line in Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of DyMnO3 progressively increased with the increasing pressure. With the increasing hydrostatic pressure, the absorption threshold of an Mn K-edge spectra of DyMnO3 shifted toward a greater energy, whereas the pre-edge line slightly shifted to a smaller energy. We provide the spectral evidence for the pressure-induced bandwidth broadening for manganites. The intensity enhancement of the white line in Mn K-edge spectra is attributed to a diminished Jahn-Teller distortion of MnO6 octahedra in compressed DyMnO3. A comparison of the pressure-dependent XAS spectra with the ab initio electronic structure calculations and full calculations of multiple scattering using the code FDMNES shows the satisfactory agreement between experimental and calculated Mn K-edge spectra. Abstract

We present resonant soft x-ray scattering studies of Ti 3d and O 2p states at the interfaces of SrTiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices. From reflectivity analyses, focusing on the (003) peak which is forbidden for our “ideal” superlattice structure, we concluded that the LaO|TiO2/SrO and the SrO|AlO2/LaO interfaces have distinct reconstructions, breaking the heterostructure symmetry. Abstract

A targeted gold nanoparticle has been developed as a contrast agent for photoacoustic medical imaging. We have studied cancer cell targeting by antibody conjugated gold nanorods for high contrast photoacoustic imaging. By changing the aspect ratio of the elongated “rod” shape of the gold nanoparticle, its plasmon peak absorption wavelength can be tuned to the near IR (700–900 nm) for an increased penetration depth into biological tissue. Effective cell targeting and sensitive photoacoustic detection of a single layer of cells are demonstrated. Combining ultrasound with contrast agent based photoacoustic imaging is proposed as a visual tool to compound molecular and structural information for early stage prostate cancer detection. Abstract

The bridge crossing water way is in the risk of impact by vessel, and thus it is very important to estimate the collision force for the safety of bridge. The impact force between bridge pier and vessel is investigated by numerical simulation and various empirical formulae. The collision response between a 5000t DWT bulk carrier with bulb bow and rigid bridge pier is simulated in the explicit finite element code of ANSYS LS-DYNA. The difference of the impact force between the empirical formulae and FE analysis are discussed. Based on the comparison of the results, the coefficient in the formulae is suggested for obtaining more accurate assessment of impact force. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The integration of quantum materials like topological insulators (TIs) with magnetic insulators (MIs) has important technological implications for spintronics and quantum computing. Here, we report excellent crystallinity of c-axis oriented epitaxial TI films of Bi2Se3 grown on MI films, a rare earth iron garnet (ReIG), such as thulium iron garnet (Tm3Fe5O12, TmIG), by molecular beam epitaxy using Se-buffered low-temperature growth technique. Strained-TmIG films with robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were deposited by off-axis sputtering. We demonstrated a streaky reflection high-energy electron diffraction pattern starting from the very first quintuple layer of Bi2Se3, indicating the high-quality interface between TmIG and Bi2Se3, a prerequisite for studying interfacial exchange coupling effects. The strong interfacial exchange interaction was manifested by the observation of an anomalous Hall effect in the Bi2Se3/TmIG bilayer and a shift of the ferromagnetic resonance field of TmIG induced by Bi2Se3. We have reproducibly grown high-quality Bi2Se3/ReIG and interfaces using this TI growth method, which may be applied to grow other types of van der Waals hetero-structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a scheme for the generation of ultrabroadband light pulses based on the coherent synthesis of thepulses delivered by two broadband optical parametric amplifiers. The scheme provides µJ-level pulses with a spectrumranging from 500 to 1000 nm, supporting sub-4 fs duration. The preliminary results obtained here demonstrate that thisscheme is suitable for the generation of single-cycle CEP-stable pulses, whose energy can be boosted by additionalamplification stages.

137. High-energy, kHz, 2.1-$\mu$m OPCPA pumped by a cryogenic Yb:YAG laser and its application to high harmonic generation

Abstract

We report on a mJ-level, kHz-repetition-rate, carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable ultrabroadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) at 2.1-μm wavelength, pumped by a high-energy, 14 ps, cryogenic Yb:YAG pump laser, and its application to high harmonic generation (HHG). The pulses were amplified to 0.85 mJ and compressed to 4.5 optical cycles with a spectral bandwidth of 474 nm. Initial HHG experiments with Xe showed a significant cutoff extension to >85 eV with an efficiency of ~10-10 per harmonic. Further systematic HHG studies will be presented.

Abstract

This article documents the addition of 396 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Anthocidaris crassispina, Aphis glycines, Argyrosomus regius, Astrocaryum sciophilum, Dasypus novemcinctus, Delomys sublineatus, Dermatemys mawii, Fundulus heteroclitus, Homalaspis plana, Jumellea rossii, Khaya senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Neoceratitis cyanescens, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, Phytophthora infestans, Piper cordulatum, Pterocarpus indicus, Rana dalmatina, Rosa pulverulenta, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Scomber colias, Semecarpus kathalekanensis, Stichopus monotuberculatus, Striga hermonthica, Tarentola boettgeri and Thermophis baileyi.
