Abstract

• A self-supported Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF was fabricated. • The Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF demonstrated excellent HER (ŋ 10 was 107 mV, 138 mV and 168 mV in acidic, neutral and alkaline electrolyte, respectively) and overall water-splitting activity (ŋ 20 = 1.53 V, with stability of ∼120 h) in alkaline media. • The combination of unique structure and intrinsic chemical properties was responsible for the excellent electrocatalysis performance of Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF. A self-supported Ni phosphide nanorod array (Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF) was synthesized using a one-step method to produce a multifunctional electrocatalyst. Benefiting from the unique structure and intrinsic chemical properties, the Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF demonstrated excellent HER activity across a range of pH values and overall water-splitting in alkaline media. To achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, the optimized Ni 12 P 5 -Ni 2 P-NR@NF required an overpotential of 107 mV, 138 mV and 168 mV in acidic, neutral and alkaline electrolyte, respectively. In addition, when used as both anode and cathode for a two-electrode electrolyze to perform water electrolysis in 1.0 M KOH, the cell only needed 1.53 V to achieve 20 mA cm−2 with stability of ∼120 h, providing evidence of multifunctional potential for large-scale applications. Abstract

A seaweed-like graphitic-C3N4 (g-C3N4 'seaweed') architecture has been prepared by direct calcination of the freeze-drying-assembled, hydrothermally treated dicyandiamide fiber network. The seaweed network of mesoporous g-C3N4 nanofibers is favorable for light harvesting, charge separation and utilization of active sites, and has highly efficient photocatalytic behavior for water splitting. It exhibits a high hydrogen-evolution rate of 9900 μmol h−1 g−1 (thirty times higher than that of its g-C3N4 bulk counterpart), and a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 7.8 % at 420 nm, better than most of the g-C3N4 nanostructures reported. Abstract

Well-intergrown nanocrystals of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) supported on three-dimensional (3D) graphene were prepared by a counter diffusion technique. The incorporation of ZIF-8 crystals greatly improves the surface areas of the graphene composites. The carbonized graphene-ZIF composites with hierarchical pore structures showed high electrochemical capacitance and good stability. Abstract

A novel type of multifunctional three-dimensional (3D) microchannel-network graphene foams (μCNGFs) has been facilely fabricated by using an alumina fiber blanket (AFB) template. The μCNGF with reticular space structures showed an excellent electrochemical property for electrochemical double-layer capacitors with a specific capacitance of as high as 216 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 in a two-electrode system. Adsorption tests of various liquids further proved the outstanding adsorbing features of the μCNGF such as fast and efficient adsorption of liquids and repeatable recyclability for petrol. Results indicated that the μCNGF has unique advantages as a novel type of electrode material for highperformance supercapacitors and is well qualified as an efficient and versatile absorber of hazardous organic liquids with potential applications in diverse industrial and environmental areas.
