Abstract

Li–S batteries (LSBs) with high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness have become a competitive candidate for next-generation energy storage devices. However, the shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides (LPSs) seriously hampers its practical applications. Herein, an in situ crystal conversion strategy has been adopted to realize the transformation of two-dimensional (2D) V2C MXene into three-dimensional (3D) NiAs-type V3S4 nanocrystal functionalized carbon flakes (V3S4@C). Thanks to the synergetic contributions from the polar V3S4 mediator and conductive carbon framework, the optimized V3S4@C host is endowed with both robust chemical/physical adsorption and high catalytic activity towards polysulfides, effectively alleviating the shuttling effect. As expected, the optimum S/V3S4@C electrode exhibits an exceptional electrochemical performance in terms of both long-duration cycling and high-rate capacities even at high sulfur loading, highlighting the promising prospects of the designed 3D hybrid host for advanced LSBs. Abstract

Summary: Transition metal carbonates (TMCs) as high‐performance anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted intensive research interests in recent years. Nanostructures with abundant pore channels can well address the volume change during the Li+ insertion/desertion process and shorten the ionic diffusion length. Multi‐component carbonates with excellent porous structures exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance in contrast to the mono‐component carbonates due to the synergistic effect among multi‐metal elements. Herein, we used a simple solvothermal method to synthesize Co‐based solid‐solution carbonates CoxNi1−xCO3 to obtain different microstructures by changing the content of the precipitant. The optimized solid‐solution Co2/3Ni1/3CO3 (CNCO‐20) delivers a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 83%, a reversible high‐rate capacity of 828.1 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1, and good electrochemical stability with a reversible capacity of 740.9 mAh g−1 after 500 charge‐discharge cycles at 1.0 A g−1 due to the enhanced electronic/ionic transport, sufficient electroactive sites, and improved electrochemical stabilities. Considering the excellent specific capacity and long life‐span, the synthesized solid‐solution CNCO‐20 demonstrate great promise as an alternative anode electrode material compared to conventional materials for LIBs. Abstract

Spinel ZnMn2O4 with high theoretical lithium storage capacity and appropriate oxidation potential has been regarded as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its practical application is always hindered by serious volume expansion, stability and modest rate performance. Herein, we firstly devised a template-free strategy to prepare mesoporous ZnMn2O4 tube-in-tube nanofibers (ZMO TiT NFs) by utilizing the electrospinning strategy and subsequent heat-treatment process. Furthermore, detailed experimental analyses clearly shed light upon the formation mechanism of ZMO TiT NFs. When utilized as anode materials for LIBs, they exhibit even better electrochemical Li-storage behavior in terms of reversible capacity (∼495.7 mA h g−1 at 2.0 A g−1) and cycling stability (564.6 mA h g−1 at 2.0 A g−1 after 1000 cycles), when compared to ZMO nanotubes, benefiting from their unique structural merits. 140. Formation and operating mechanisms of single-crystalline perovskite NaNbO3 nanocubes/few-layered Nb2CTx MXene hybrids towards Li-ion capacitors.

Abstract

Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), combining the merits of both lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, possess high energy/power density and a long-duration lifespan in one device. However, the dynamic imbalance between the positive and negative electrodes greatly limits their further practical application. Herein, we first fabricate single-crystalline perovskite NaNbO3 nanocubes (S-P-NNO NCs) via a simple hydrothermal alkalization strategy by using the few-layered Nb2CTx MXene (f-Nb2CTx) as a precursor, and further assemble the resultant S-P-NNO NCs with f-Nb2CTxvia a freeze-drying process to fabricate S-P-NNO/f-Nb2CTx hybrids. The in-depth understanding of the formation of the S-P-NNO NCs is reasonably unveiled with comprehensive experiments. Benefiting from the compositional optimization and synergistic effects between S-P-NNO NCs and f-Nb2CTx, the optimized S-P-NNO/f-Nb2CTx nanohybrid exhibits a large reversible capacity of ∼157 mA h g−1 at 2.0 A g−1. The S-P-NNO/f-Nb2CTx based LICs are endowed with an energy density of ∼56 Wh kg−1 at an ultrahigh power density of 13 kW kg−1, along with a long-duration cycle stability (∼75% retention after 4000 cycles). The intrinsic Li-storage mechanism of the S-P-NNO/f-Nb2CTx anode is put forward with in/ex situ X-ray diffraction analysis. More meaningfully, the devised synthetic methodology and unique insights here will stimulate the extensive development of novel Nb-based oxides towards next-generation LICs and beyond. Abstract

The growing demand for cost‐efficiency and safe energy storage systems has stimulated enormous interest worldwide in advanced cathodes for practicle "beyond‐Li‐ion" batteries. Herein, a feasible electrospinning/annealing avenue for the construction of 1D Mo‐doped Na3V2(PO4)3 nanowires in situ coated with carbon nanoshell (MNVP@C NWs) toward next‐generation Na‐ion batteries (NIBs) and hybrid Li/Na‐ion batteries (HLNIBs) as a high‐rate cathode material, is reported. Particularly, the intrinsic hybrid Li/Na‐ion storage mechanism of the MNVP@C NWs is unveiled for the HLNIBs with comprehensive characterizations. The resultant MNVP@C NWs demonstrate rapid electronic/ionic transport and rigid structural tolerance within operating temperatures from ‐25 to 55 °C, benefiting from its unique structural/compositional merits. More competitively, the MNVP@C NWs assembled pouch‐type NIBs (‐15 to 25 °C) and HLNIBs (‐25 to 55 °C) both exhibit remarkable wide‐temperature‐tolerance electrochemical properties in terms of high‐rate capabilities and long‐duration cycling lifespan, along with material‐level energy densities of ≈262.4 and ≈186.1 Wh kg‐1 at 25 °C, respectively.
