101. A snapshot of the climate in the Middle Pleistocene inferred from a stalagmite from central Japan

Abstract

Abstract Stalagmites are useful archives in reconstructing paleoclimates: most paleoclimate studies used stalagmites that are distributed in specific locations and ages. We examined a stalagmite (GYM-1) collected from Nara Prefecture, central Japan, where limestone areas are limited. Applying 238U–234U method, the ages of GYM-1 were determined as 744 ± 70 to 677 ± 74 ka (based only on analytical uncertainties, 1σ). Even assuming a 10% uncertainty in the initial activity of 234U/238U, (234U/238U)0, this age could be still older than 460 ka. Temperatures calculated based on δD in the fluid inclusions and δ18O in the calcium carbonate ranged from 9.0 to 11.9 °C (10.8 ± 0.9 °C on average) or from 6.0 to 9.1 °C (7.9 ± 0.9 °C on average) depending on the equation. The estimated temperature suggests that GYM-1 formed during an interglacial period of the Middle Pleistocene. Synchronous behavior of isotopic values with lamination likely reflects seasonal temperature in a highly ventilated cave system.

Abstract

Abstract Background Mega-aortic syndrome including aortic arch and descending aortic aneurysm is a challenging surgical case. Because the aorta continuously dilates, creating the distal anastomosis sites becomes an issue. Despite the developments in endovascular techniques including frozen elephant trunk, in the case of mega-aortic syndrome or mycotic aneurysm, extensive surgical repair is still a strong armamentarium. Our patient had a mega-aorta with chronic aortic dissection. Herein, we show tips regarding concurrent ascending, aortic arch, and descending aortic replacement via posterolateral thoracotomy for this relatively young patient. Case presentation A 46-year-old man with chronic kidney disease had chronic type A aortic dissection with an extensively dilated thoracic aorta from the distal ascending to the descending aorta measuring 63 mm in diameter and abdominal aorta measuring 50 mm. The short segment of the distal descending aorta was narrowed to 36 mm. The patient underwent a concurrent replacement of the distal ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending aorta via a posterolateral thoracotomy. The patient was extubated on postoperative day (POD) 1 and discharged home without serious complications such as stroke, respiratory failure, or renal failure on POD 18. The 1-year follow-up computed tomography did not find issues in the anastomosis sites; however, the abdominal aorta enlarged from 50 to 58 mm. The patient underwent a thoracoabdominal aortic replacement and recovered well without any complications. Conclusions Good exposure and meticulous organ protection methods are key to a safe concurrent replacement of the ascending, aortic arch, and descending aorta via posterolateral thoracotomy.

Abstract Stiff knee gait (SKG) occurrence after a stroke is associated with various abnormal muscle activities; however, the interactions among these muscles are unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the muscle synergy characteristics during walking in patients with SKG after a stroke. This cross-sectional study included 20 patients with poststroke SKG (SKG group), 16 patients without poststroke SKG (non-SKG group), and 15 healthy adults (control group). Participants walked a 10-m distance at a comfortable speed, and electromyographic data were recorded from six lower-limb muscles. Non-negative matrix factorization was employed to derive time-varying activity (C), muscle weights (W), and the percentage of total variance accounted for (tVAF) for muscle synergies. The SKG group showed a higher tVAF than the control group. The initial stance module (including knee extensors) showed increased activity during the swing phase. The initial swing module (including hip flexors and ankle dorsiflexors) exhibited a higher activity during the single-support phase but a lower activity during the swing phase. The synergy structure in patients with SKG after stroke was simplified, with specific abnormalities in synergy activities. SKG may arise from several synergy alterations involving multiple muscles, indicating that approaches focused on controlling individual muscle activities are unsuitable.

Abstract

Abstract Temporal discounting, in which the recipient of a reward perceives the value of that reward to decrease with delay in its receipt, is associated with impulsivity and psychiatric disorders such as depression. Here, we investigate the role of the serotonin 5-HT4 receptor (5-HT4R) in modulating temporal discounting in the macaque dorsal caudate nucleus (dCDh), the neurons of which have been shown to represent temporally discounted value. We first mapped the 5-HT4R distribution in macaque brains using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and confirmed dense expression of 5-HT4R in the dCDh. We then examined the effects of a specific 5-HT4R antagonist infused into the dCDh. Blockade of 5-HT4R significantly increased error rates in a goal-directed delayed reward task, indicating an increase in the rate of temporal discounting. This increase was specific to the 5-HT4R blockade because saline controls showed no such effect. The results demonstrate that 5-HT4Rs in the dCDh are involved in reward-evaluation processes, particularly in the context of delay discounting, and suggest that serotonergic transmission via 5-HT4R may be a key component in the neural mechanisms underlying impulsive decisions, potentially contributing to depressive symptoms.

105. Social defeat stress impairs systemic iron metabolism by activating the hepcidin–ferroportin axis

Abstract

Abstract Chronic psychological stress has been reported to decrease circulating iron concentrations and impair hematopoiesis. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of psychological stress on biological iron metabolism by using the social defeat stress (SDS) model, a widely used model of depression. Compared with control mice, mice subjected to SDS (SDS mice) had lower social interaction (SI) behavior. The SDS mice also showed impaired hematopoiesis, as evidenced by reduced circulating red blood cell counts, elevated reticulocyte counts, and decreased plasma iron levels. In the SDS mice, the iron contents in the bone marrow decreased, whereas those in the spleen increased, suggesting dysregulation in systemic iron metabolism. The concentrations of plasma hepcidin, an important regulator of systemic iron homeostasis, increased in the SDS mice. Meanwhile, the concentrations of ferroportin, an iron transport protein negatively regulated by hepcidin, were lower in the spleen and duodenum of the SDS mice than in those of the control mice. Treatment with dalteparin, a hepcidin inhibitor, prevented the decrease in plasma iron levels in the SDS mice. The gene expression and enzyme activity of furin, which converts the precursor hepcidin to active hepcidin, were high and positively correlated with plasma hepcidin concentration. Thus, furin activation might be responsible for the increased plasma hepcidin concentration. This study is the first to show that psychological stress disrupts systemic iron homeostasis by activating the hepcidin–ferroportin axis. Consideration of psychological stressors might be beneficial in the treatment of diseases with iron‐refractory anemia.

Abstract

Abstract Comorbid Alzheimer’s disease (AD) neuropathology is common in Lewy body disease (LBD); however, AD comorbidity in the prodromal phase of LBD remains unclear. This study investigated AD comorbidity in the prodromal and symptomatic phases of LBD by analyzing plasma biomarkers in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and individuals at risk of LBD (NaT-PROBE cohort). Patients with PD (PD group, n = 84) and DLB (DLB group, n = 16) and individuals with LBD with ≥ 2 (high-risk group, n = 82) and without (low-risk group, n = 37) prodromal symptoms were enrolled. Plasma amyloid-beta (Aβ) composite was measured using immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry assays. Plasma phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181), neurofilament light chain (NfL), and alpha-synuclein (aSyn) were measured using a single-molecule array. Plasma p-tau181 levels were higher in the PD and DLB groups than in the low-risk group. Aβ composite level was higher in the DLB group than in the high-risk group. AD-related biomarker levels were not elevated in the high-risk group. NfL levels were higher in the high-risk, PD, and DLB groups than in the low-risk group. In the PD group, Aβ composite was associated with cognitive function, p-tau181 with motor function and non-motor symptoms, and NfL with cognitive and motor functions and non-motor symptoms. In the high-risk group, NfL was associated with metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy abnormalities. The PD and DLB groups exhibited comorbid AD neuropathology, though not in the prodromal phase. Elevated plasma NfL levels, even without elevated AD-related plasma biomarker levels, may indicate aSyn-induced neurodegeneration in the LBD prodromal phase.

Abstract

To realize human-robot collaboration, robots need to execute actions for new tasks according to human instructions given finite prior knowledge. Human experts can share their knowledge of how to perform a task with a robot through multi-modal instructions in their demonstrations, showing a sequence of short-horizon steps to achieve a long-horizon goal. This paper introduces a method for robot action sequence generation from instruction videos using (1) an audio-visual Transformer that converts audio-visual features and instruction speech to a sequence of robot actions called dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) and (2) style-transfer-based training that employs multi-task learning with video captioning and weakly-supervised learning with a semantic classifier to exploit unpaired video-action data. We built a system that accomplishes various cooking actions, where an arm robot executes a DMP sequence acquired from a cooking video using the audio-visual Transformer. Experiments with Epic-Kitchen-100, YouCookII, QuerYD, and in-house instruction video datasets show that the proposed method improves the quality of DMP sequences by 2.3 times the METEOR score obtained with a baseline video-to-action Transformer. 110. Learned spatial data partitioning

Abstract

Due to the significant increase in the size of spatial data, it is essential to use distributed parallel processing systems to efficiently analyze spatial data. In this paper, we first study learned spatial data partitioning, which effectively assigns groups of big spatial data to computers based on locations of data by using machine learning techniques. We formalize spatial data partitioning in the context of reinforcement learning and develop a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm. Our learning algorithm leverages features of spatial data partitioning and prunes ineffective learning processes to find optimal partitions efficiently. Our experimental study, which uses Apache Sedona and real-world spatial data, demonstrates that our method efficiently finds partitions for accelerating distance join queries and reduces the workload run time by up to 59.4%.

Abstract

We report on the highly efficient spin-orbit torque (SOT) generation in epitaxial SrIrO$_{3}$(SIO), which is grown on an orthorhombic DyScO$_{3}$(110) substrate. By conducting harmonic Hall measurement in Co$_{20}$Fe$_{60}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB)/SIO bilayers, we characterize two kinds of the SOTs, i.e., dampinglike (DL) and fieldlike ones to find that the former is much larger than the latter. By comparison with the Pt control sample with the same CoFeB thickness, the observed DL SOT efficiency $\xi$$_{DL}$ of SIO ($\sim$0.32) is three times higher than that of Pt ($\sim$0.093). The $\xi$$_{DL}$ is nearly constant as a function of the CoFeB thickness, suggesting that the SIO plays a crucial role in the large SOT generation. These results on the CoFeB/SIO bilayers highlight that the epitaxial SIO is promising for low-current and reliable spin-orbit torque-controlled devices., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2305.17887

Abstract

In the exascale computing era, optimizing MPI collective performance in high-performance computing (HPC) applications is critical. Current algorithms face performance degradation due to system call overhead, page faults, or data-copy latency, affecting HPC applications' efficiency and scalability. To address these issues, we propose PiP-MColl, a Process-in-Process-based Multi-object Inter-process MPI Collective design that maximizes small message MPI collective performance at scale. PiP-MColl features efficient multiple sender and receiver collective algorithms and leverages Process-in-Process shared memory techniques to eliminate unnecessary system call, page fault overhead, and extra data copy, improving intra- and inter-node message rate and throughput. Our design also boosts performance for larger messages, resulting in comprehensive improvement for various message sizes. Experimental results show that PiP-MColl outperforms popular MPI libraries, including OpenMPI, MVAPICH2, and Intel MPI, by up to 4.6X for MPI collectives like MPI_Scatter and MPI_Allgather., Comment: Accepted by ACM HPDC 2023

Abstract

We report the mass determination of TOI-519 b, a transiting substellar object around a mid-M dwarf. We carried out radial velocity measurements using Subaru / InfraRed Doppler (IRD), revealing that TOI-519 b is a planet with a mass of $0.463^{+0.082}_{-0.088}~M_{\rm Jup}$. We also find that the host star is metal rich ($\rm [Fe/H] = 0.27 \pm 0.09$ dex) and has the lowest effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}=3322 \pm 49$ K) among all stars hosting known close-in giant planets based on the IRD spectra and mid-resolution infrared spectra obtained with NASA Infrared Telescope Facility / SpeX. The core mass of TOI-519 b inferred from a thermal evolution model ranges from $0$ to $\sim30~M_\oplus$, which can be explained by both the core accretion and disk instability models as the formation origins of this planet. However, TOI-519 is in line with the emerging trend that M dwarfs with close-in giant planets tend to have high metallicity, which may indicate that they formed in the core accretion model. The system is also consistent with the potential trend that close-in giant planets around M dwarfs tend to be less massive than those around FGK dwarfs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory sends realtime neutrino alerts with high probability of being astrophysical in origin. We present a new method to correlate these events and possible candidate sources using $2,089$ blazars from the Fermi-LAT 4LAC-DR2 catalog and with $3,413$ AGNs from the Radio Fundamental Catalog. No statistically significant neutrino emission was found in any of the catalog searches. The result is compatible with a small fraction, $<1$%, of AGNs being neutrino emitters and prior evidence for neutrino emission presented by IceCube and other authors from sources such as TXS 0506+056 and PKS 1502+06. We also present cross-checks to other analyses that claim a significant correlation using similar data samples, and we find that adding more information on the neutrino events and more data overall makes the result compatible with background.

Abstract

We describe a new data sample of IceCube DeepCore and report on the latest measurement of atmospheric neutrino oscillations obtained with data recorded between 2011-2019. The sample includes significant improvements in data calibration, detector simulation, and data processing, and the analysis benefits from a detailed treatment of systematic uncertainties, with significantly higher level of detail since our last study. By measuring the relative fluxes of neutrino flavors as a function of their reconstructed energies and arrival directions we constrain the atmospheric neutrino mixing parameters to be $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.51\pm 0.05$ and $\Delta m^2_{32} = 2.41\pm0.07\times 10^{-3}\mathrm{eV}^2$, assuming a normal mass ordering. The resulting 40\% reduction in the error of both parameters with respect to our previous result makes this the most precise measurement of oscillation parameters using atmospheric neutrinos. Our results are also compatible and complementary to those obtained using neutrino beams from accelerators, which are obtained at lower neutrino energies and are subject to different sources of uncertainties.

Abstract

Motivated by topological equivalence between an extended Haldane model and a chiral-$\pi$-flux model on a square lattice, we apply $\pi$-flux models to two-dimensional bipartite quasicrystals with rhombus tiles in order to investigate topological properties in aperiodic systems. Topologically trivial $\pi$-flux models in the Ammann-Beenker tiling lead to massively degenerate confined states whose energies and fractions differ from the zero-flux model. This is different from the $\pi$-flux models in the Penrose tiling, where confined states only appear at the center of the bands as is the case of a zero-flux model. Additionally, Dirac cones appear in a certain $\pi$-flux model of the Ammann-Beenker approximant, which remains even if the size of the approximant increases. Nontrivial topological states with nonzero Bott index are found when staggered tile-dependent hoppings are introduced in the $\pi$-flux models. Abstract

Jupiter's weather layer exhibits long-term and quasi-periodic cycles of meteorological activity that can completely change the appearance of its belts and zones. There are cycles with intervals from 4 to 9 years, dependent on the latitude, which were detected in 5$\mu$m radiation, which provides a window into the cloud-forming regions of the troposphere; however, the origin of these cycles has been a mystery. Here we propose that magnetic torsional oscillations/waves arising from the dynamo region could modulate the heat transport and hence be ultimately responsible for the variability of the tropospheric banding. These axisymmetric waves are magnetohydrodynamic waves influenced by the rapid rotation, which have been detected in Earth's core, and have been recently suggested to exist in Jupiter by the observation of magnetic secular variations by Juno. Using the magnetic field model JRM33, together with the density distribution model, we compute the expected speed of these waves. For the waves excited by variations in the zonal jet flows, their wavelength can be estimated from the width of the alternating jets, yielding waves with a half period of 3.2-4.7 years in 14-23$^\circ$N, consistent with the intervals with the cycles of variability of Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt and North Temperate Belt identified in the visible and infrared observations. The nature of these waves, including the wave speed and the wavelength, is revealed by a data-driven technique, dynamic mode decomposition, applied to the spatio-temporal data for 5$\mu$m emission. Our results imply that exploration of these magnetohydrodynamic waves may provide a new window to the origins of quasi-periodic patterns in Jupiter's tropospheric clouds and to the internal dynamics and the dynamo of Jupiter.

Abstract

This study investigated the anti-caries and anti-inflammatory effects of mouthwash formulations containing Punica granatum (pomegranate) peel extract (PPE), sodium-trimetaphosphate, and low concentrations of fluoride. PPE was characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (ellagic acid and punicalagin). Total phenolics were quantified among formulations, and their stability was analyzed for 28 days. The formulation effects were evaluated as follows: (1) inorganic component concentration and reduced demineralization on bovine enamel blocks subjected to pH cycling; (2) anti-biofilm effect on dual-biofilms of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 treated for 1 and 10 min, respectively; and (3) cytotoxicity and production of inflammatory mediators (interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha). The formulation containing 3% PPE, 0.3% sodium-trimetaphosphate, and 225 ppm of fluoride resulted in a 34.5% surface hardness loss; a 13% (treated for 1 min) and 36% (treated for 10 min) biofilm reduction in S. mutans; a 26% (1 min) and 36% (10 min) biofilm reduction in C. albicans; absence of cytotoxicity; and anti-inflammatory activity confirmed by decreased interleukin-6 production in mouse macrophages. Thus, our results provide a promising prospect for the development of an alcohol-free commercial dental product with the health benefits of P. granatum that have been recognized for a millennium.

Abstract

Currents are unique drivers of oceanic phylogeography and thus determine the distribution of marine coastal species, along with past glaciations and sea-level changes. Here we reconstruct the worldwide colonization history of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.), the most widely distributed marine flowering plant or seagrass from its origin in the Northwest Pacific, based on nuclear and chloroplast genomes. We identified two divergent Pacific clades with evidence for admixture along the East Pacific coast. Two west-to-east (trans-Pacific) colonization events support the key role of the North Pacific Current. Time-calibrated nuclear and chloroplast phylogenies yielded concordant estimates of the arrival of Z. marina in the Atlantic through the Canadian Arctic, suggesting that eelgrass-based ecosystems, hotspots of biodiversity and carbon sequestration, have only been present there for ~243 ky (thousand years). Mediterranean populations were founded ~44 kya, while extant distributions along western and eastern Atlantic shores were founded at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (~19 kya), with at least one major refuge being the North Carolina region. The recent colonization and five- to sevenfold lower genomic diversity of the Atlantic compared to the Pacific populations raises concern and opportunity about how Atlantic eelgrass might respond to rapidly warming coastal oceans.
