Heavy metal toxicity is one of the most devastating abiotic stresses. Heavy metals cause serious damage to plant growth and productivity, which is a major problem for sustainable agriculture. It adversely affects plant molecular physiology and biochemistry by generating osmotic stress, ionic imbalance, oxidative stress, membrane disorganization, cellular toxicity, and metabolic homeostasis. To improve and stimulate plant tolerance to heavy metal stress, the application of biostimulants can be an effective approach without threatening the ecosystem. Melatonin ( N -acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a biostimulator, plant growth regulator, and antioxidant, promotes plant tolerance to heavy metal stress by improving redox and nutrient homeostasis, osmotic balance, and primary and secondary metabolism. It is important to perceive the complete and detailed regulatory mechanisms of exogenous and endogenous melatonin-mediated heavy metal-toxicity mitigation in plants to identify potential research gaps that should be addressed in the future. This review provides a novel insight to understand the multifunctional role of melatonin in reducing heavy metal stress and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

The microbiome of the anaerobic digester (AD) regulates the level of energy production. To assess the microbiome diversity and composition in different stages of anaerobic digestion, we collected 16 samples from the AD of cow dung (CD) origin. The samples were categorized into four groups (Group-I, Group-II, Group-III and Group-IV) based on the level of energy production (CH 4 %), and sequenced through whole metagenome sequencing (WMS). Group-I (n = 2) belonged to initial time of energy production whereas Group-II (n = 5), Group-III (n = 5), and Group-IV (n = 4) had 21-34%, 47-58% and 71-74% of CH 4 , respectively. The physicochemical analysis revealed that level of energy production (CH 4 %) had significant positive correlation with digester pH (r = 0.92, p < 0.001), O 2 level (%) (r = 0.54, p < 0.05), and environmental temperature (°C) (r = 0.57, p < 0.05). The WMS data mapped to 2800 distinct bacterial, archaeal and viral genomes through PathoScope (PS) and MG-RAST (MR) analyses. We detected 768, 1421, 1819 and 1774 bacterial strains in Group-I, Group-II, Group-III and Group-IV, respectively through PS analysis which were represented by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Spirochaetes and Fibrobacteres phyla (> 93.0% of the total abundances). Simultaneously, 343 archaeal strains were detected, of which 95.90% strains shared across four metagenomes. We identified 43 dominant species including 31 bacterial and 12 archaeal species in AD microbiomes, of which only archaea showed positive correlation with digester pH, CH 4 concentration, pressure and temperature (Spearman correlation; r > 0.6, p < 0.01). The indicator species analysis showed that the species Methanosarcina vacuolate, Dehalococcoides mccartyi, Methanosarcina sp. Kolksee and Methanosarcina barkeri were highly specific for energy production. The correlation network analysis showed that different strains of Euryarcheota and Firmicutes phyla exhibited significant correlation (p = 0.021, Kruskal-Wallis test; with a cutoff of 1.0) with the highest level (74.1%) of energy production (Group-IV). In addition, top CH 4 producing microbiomes showed increased genomic functional activities related to one carbon and biotin metabolism, oxidative stress, proteolytic pathways, membrane-type-1-matrix-metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) pericellular network, acetyl-CoA production, motility and chemotaxis. Importantly, the physicochemical properties of the AD including pH, CH 4 concentration (%), pressure, temperature and environmental temperature were found to be positively correlated with these genomic functional potentials and distribution of ARGs and metal resistance pathways (Spearman correlation; r > 0.5, p < 0.01). Background and Aim: Fowl cholera (FC) caused by Pasteurella multocida is a highly contagious bacterial disease of global importance for poultry production. The severity and incidence of FC caused by P. multocida may vary considerably depending on several factors associated with the host (including species and age of infected birds), the environment, and the bacterial strain. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of multidrug-resistant P. multocida strains isolated from FC outbreaks in laying hens from commercial farms of Bangladesh., Materials and Methods: We collected 57 samples of suspected FC, including 36 live and 21 dead laying hens. P. multocida isolates were characterized by biochemical and molecular-biological methods., Results: Twenty-two strains of P. multocida were isolated from these samples through phenotypic and genotypic characterization. The strains were grouped into two distinct random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) biotypes harboring a range of pathogenic genes; exb B, omp H, ptf A, nan B, sod C, and hgb A. In this study, 90.90% and 81.82% P. multocida strains were multidrug-resistant and biofilm formers, respectively. Whole-genome sequencing of the two representative RAPD phylotypes confirmed as P. multocida type B: L2:ST122, harboring a number of virulence factors-associated genes (VFGs), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes (ARGs). In addition, pan-genome analysis revealed 90 unique genes in the genomes of P. multocida predicted to be associated with versatile metabolic functions, pathogenicity, virulence, and AMR., Conclusion: This is first-ever report on the association of P. multocida genotype B: L2:ST122 and related VFGs and ARGs in the pathogenesis of FC in laying hens. The novel coronavirus infectious disease-2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has traumatized the whole world with the ongoing devastating pandemic. A plethora of microbial domains including viruses (other than SARS-CoV-2), bacteria, archaea and fungi have evolved together, and interact in complex molecular pathogenesis along with SARS-CoV-2. However, the involvement of other microbial co-pathogens and underlying molecular mechanisms leading to extortionate ailment in critically ill COVID-19 patients has yet not been extensively reviewed. Although, the incidence of co-infections could be up to 94.2% in laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases, the fate of co-infections among SARS-CoV-2 infected hosts often depends on the balance between the host's protective immunity and immunopathology. Predominantly identified co-pathogens of SARS-CoV-2 are bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Legionella pneumophila and Clamydia pneumoniae followed by viruses including influenza, coronavirus, rhinovirus/enterovirus, parainfluenza, metapneumovirus, influenza B virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. The cross-talk between co-pathogens (especially lung microbiomes), SARS-CoV-2 and host is an important factor that ultimately increases the difficulty of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of COVID-19. Simultaneously, co-infecting microbiotas may use new strategies to escape host defense mechanisms by altering both innate and adaptive immune responses to further aggravate SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Better understanding of co-infections in COVID-19 is critical for the effective patient management, treatment and containment of SARS-CoV-2. This review therefore necessitates the comprehensive investigation of commonly reported microbial co-pathogens amid COVID-19, their transmission pattern along with the possible mechanism of co-infections and outcomes. Thus, identifying the possible co-pathogens and their underlying molecular mechanisms during SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis may shed light in developing diagnostics, appropriate curative and preventive interventions for suspected SARS-CoV-2 respiratory infections in the current pandemic., (Copyright © 2021. The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rapidly emerging and highly transmissible disease caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the microbiomes associated with the upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COVID-19 diseases has clinical interest. We hypothesize that microbiome diversity and composition, and their genomic features are associated with different pathological conditions of these human respiratory tract diseases. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed 21 RNASeq metagenomic data including eleven COVID-19 (BD = 6 and China = 5), six COPD (UK = 6) and four URTI (USA = 4) samples to unravel the microbiome diversity and related genomic metabolic functions. The metagenomic data mapped to 534 bacterial, 60 archaeal and 61 viral genomes with distinct variation in the microbiome composition across the samples (COVID-19 > COPD > URTI). Notably, 94.57%, 80.0% and 24.59% bacterial, archaeal and viral genera shared between the COVID-19 and non-COVID samples, respectively. However, the COVID-19 related samples had sole association with 16 viral genera other than SARS-CoV-2. Strain-level virome profiling revealed 660 and 729 strains in COVID-19 and non-COVID samples, respectively, and of them 34.50% strains shared between the conditions. Functional annotation of the metagenomic data identified the association of several biochemical pathways related to basic metabolism (amino acid and energy), ABC transporters, membrane transport, virulence, disease and defense, regulation of virulence, programmed cell death, and primary immunodeficiency. We also detected 30 functional gene groups/classes associated with resistance to antibiotics and toxic compounds (RATC) in both COVID-19 and non-COVID microbiomes. Furthermore, we detected comparatively higher abundance of cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance (CZCR) and multidrug resistance to efflux pumps (MREP) genes in COVID-19 metagenome. The profiles of microbiome diversity and associated microbial genomic features found in both COVID-19 and non-COVID (COPD and URTI) samples might be helpful in developing microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics for COVID-19 and non-COVID respiratory diseases. Poultry originated Escherichia fergusonii (POEF), an emerging bacterial pathogen, causes a wide range of intestinal and extra-intestinal infections in the poultry industry which incurred significant economic losses worldwide. Chromosomal co-existence of antibiotics and metal resistance genes has recently been the focal point of POEF isolates besides its pathogenic potentials. This study reports the complete genome analysis of POEF strain OTSVEF-60 from the poultry originated samples of Bangladesh. The assembled draft genome of the strain was 4.2 Mbp containing 4503 coding sequences, 120 RNA (rRNA = 34, tRNA = 79, ncRNA = 7), and three intact phage signature regions. Forty-one broad range antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) including dfrA12, qnrS1, bla TEM-1 , aadA2, tet(A), and sul-2 along with multiple efflux pump genes were detected, which translated to phenotypic resistant patterns of the pathogen to trimethoprim, fluoroquinolones, β-lactams, aminoglycoside, tetracycline, and sulfonamides. Moreover, 22 metal resistance genes were found co-existing within the genome of the POEF strain, and numerous virulence genes (VGs) coding for cit (AB), feo (AB), fep (ABCG), csg (ABCDEFG), fliC, ompA, gadA, ecpD, etc. were also identified throughout the genome. In addition, we detected a class I integron gene cassette harboring dfrA12, ant (3″)-I, and qacEΔ-sul2 genes; 42 copies of insertion sequence (IS) elements; and two CRISPR arrays. The genomic functional analysis predicted several metabolic pathways related to motility, flagellar assembly, epithelial cell invasion, quorum sensing, biofilm formation, and biosynthesis of vitamin, co-factors, and secondary metabolites. We herein for the first time detected multiple ARGs, VGs, mobile genetic elements, and some metabolic functional genes in the complete genome of POEF strain OTSVEF-60, which might be associated with the pathogenesis, spreading of ARGs and VGs, and subsequent treatment failure against this emerging avian pathogen with currently available antimicrobials.

Infecting millions of people, the SARS-CoV-2 is evolving at an unprecedented rate, demanding advanced and specified analytic pipeline to capture the mutational spectra. In order to explore mutations and deletions in the spike (S) protein - the most-discussed protein of SARS-CoV-2 - we comprehensively analyzed 35,750 complete S protein-coding sequences through a custom Python-based pipeline. This GISAID-collected dataset of until 24 June 2020 covered six continents and five major climate zones. We identified 27,801 (77.77% sequences) mutated strains compared to reference Wuhan-Hu-1 wherein 84.40% of these strains mutated by only a single amino acid (aa). An outlier strain (EPI&#95;ISL&#95;463893) from Bosnia and Herzegovina possessed six aa substitutions. We also identified 11 residues with high aa mutation frequency, and each contains four types of aa variations. The infamous D614G variant has spread worldwide with ever-rising dominance and across regions with different climatic conditions alongside L5F and D936Y mutants, which have been documented throughout all regions and climate zones, respectively. We also found 988 unique aa substitutions spanned across 660 residues, which differed significantly among different continents (p = .003) and climatic zones (p = .021) as inferred with the Kruskal-Wallis test. Besides, 17 in-frame deletions at four sites adjacent to receptor-binding-domain were determined that may have a possible impact on attenuation. This study provides a fast and accurate pipeline for identifying mutations and deletions from the large dataset for coding and also non-coding sequences as evidenced by the representative analysis on existing S protein data. By using separate multi-sequence alignment, removing ambiguous sequences and in-frame stop codons, and utilizing pairwise alignment, this method can derive both synonymous and non-synonymous mutations (strain&#95;ID reference aa:mutation position:strain aa). We suggest that the pipeline will aid in the evolutionary surveillance of any SARS-CoV-2 encoded proteins and will prove to be crucial in tracking the ever-increasing variation of many other divergent RNA viruses in the future. The emerged novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has created a global health crisis that warrants an accurate and detailed characterization of the rapidly evolving viral genome for understanding its epidemiology, pathogenesis, and containment. Here, we explored 61,485 sequences of the nucleocapsid (N) protein, a potent diagnostic and prophylactic target, for identifying the mutations to review their roles in real-time polymerase chain reaction based diagnosis and observe consequent impacts. Compared to the Wuhan reference strain, a total of 1034 unique nucleotide mutations were identified in the mutant strains (49.15%, n = 30,221) globally. Of these mutations, 367 occupy primer binding sites including the 3'-end mismatch to the primer-pair of 11 well-characterized primer sets. Noteworthily, CDC (USA) recommended the N2 primer set contained a lower mismatch than the other primer sets. Moreover, 684 amino acid (aa) substitutions were located across 317 (75.66% of total aa) unique positions including 82, 21, and 83 of those in the RNA binding N-terminal domain (NTD), SR-rich region, and C-terminal dimerization domain, respectively. Moreover, 11 in-frame deletions, mostly (n = 10) within the highly flexible linker region, were revealed, and the rest was within the NTD region. Furthermore, we predicted the possible consequence of high-frequency mutations (≥20) and deletions on the tertiary structure of the N protein. Remarkably, we observed that a high frequency (67.94% of mutated sequences) co-occuring mutations (R203K and G204R) destabilized and decreased overall structural flexibility. The N protein of SARS-CoV-2 comprises an average of 1.2 mutations per strain compared to 4.4 and 0.4 in Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus and SARS-CoV, respectively. Despite being proposed as the alternative target to spike protein for vaccine and therapeutics, the ongoing evolution of the N protein may challenge these endeavors, thus needing further immunoinformatics analyses. The ongoing mutations in the structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2 are the major impediment for prevention and control of the COVID-19 disease. Presently we focused on evolution of the envelope (E) protein, one of the most enigmatic and less studied protein among the four structural proteins (S, E, M and N) associated with multitude of immunopathological functions of SARS-CoV-2. In the present study, we comprehensively analyzed 81,818 high quality E protein sequences of SARS-CoV-2 globally available in the GISAID database as of 20 August 2020. Compared to Wuhan reference strain, our mutational analysis explored only 1.2 % (982/81818) mutant strains undergoing a total of 115 unique amino acid (aa) substitutions in the E protein, highlighting the fact that most (98.8 %) of the E protein of SARS-CoV-2 strains are highly conserved. Moreover, we found 58.77 % (134 of 228) nucleotides (nt) positions of SARS-CoV-2 E gene encountering a total of 176 unique nt-level mutations globally, which may affect the efficacy of real time RT-PCR-based molecular detection of COVID-19. Importantly, higher aa variations observed in the C-terminal domain (CTD) of the E protein, particularly at Ser 55 -Phe 56 , Arg 69 and the C-terminal end (DLLV: 72-75) may alter the binding of SARS-CoV-2 Envelope protein to tight junction-associated PALS1 and thus could play a key role in COVID-19 pathogenesis. Furthermore, this study revealed the V25A mutation in the transmembrane domain which is a key factor for the homopentameric conformation of E protein. Our analysis also observed a triple cysteine motif harboring mutation (L39M, A41S, A41V, C43F, C43R, C43S, C44Y, N45R) which may hinder the binding of E protein with spike glycoprotein. Non-invasive tools are needed to rule out the presence of esophageal varices (EV) in patients with chronic liver disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of Liver stiffness-spleen size-to-platelet ratio (LSPS) for EV detection and identification of high risk EV in patients with CLD. A total of 70 patients with CLD irrespective of the etiology attending at OPD and admitted in Department of Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disorders (GHPD) of BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2016 to October 2017 were enrolled in this observational cross-sectional study. All patients underwent routine laboratory tests, liver function tests, ultrasonography, liver stiffness (LS) measurement and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Clinical value of LSPS was compared with platelet count, spleen size and LS for detection of esophageal varices. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed by the Area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated using ROC curve. LSPS has better diagnostic accuracy for detection of EV in terms of AUROC, showing superiority over each factor alone. LSPS also detect high risk EV but accuracy was lower than detection of EV. The optimal cutoff values of LSPS for EV and high risk EV were 0.879 and 4.132 respectively, at which AUROC, negative predictive value, and accuracy were 0.910 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.832-0.988], 90.9% and 90.0% and 0.695 (95% CI 0.520-0.870), 62.5% and 69.4% respectively. LSPS represents a useful, noninvasive method to detect EV and a high risk EV in patients with CLD. Clinicians should recommend those patients with CLD who show higher values of LSPS to undergo further endoscopic examination.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a crucial multifactorial and complex global problem and Bangladesh poses a regional and global threat with a high degree of antibiotic resistance. Although the routine application of antimicrobials in the livestock industry has largely contributed to the health and productivity, it correspondingly plays a significant role in the evolution of different pathogenic bacterial strains having multidrug resistance (MDR) properties. Bangladesh is implementing the National Action Plan (NAP) for containing AMR in human, animal, and environment sectors through "One Health" approach where the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) is the mandated body to implement NAP strategies in the animal health sector of the country. This review presents a "snapshot" of the predisposing factors, and current situations of AMR along with the weakness and strength of DLS to contain the problem in animal farming practices in Bangladesh. In the present review, resistance monitoring data and risk assessment identified several direct and/or indirect predisposing factors to be potentially associated with AMR development in the animal health sector of Bangladesh. The predisposing factors are inadequate veterinary healthcare, monitoring and regulatory services, intervention of excessive informal animal health service providers, and farmers' knowledge gap on drugs, and AMR which have resulted in the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, ultimate in the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes in all types of animal farming settings of Bangladesh. MDR bacteria with extreme resistance against antibiotics recommended to use in both animals and humans have been reported and been being a potential public health hazard in Bangladesh. Execution of extensive AMR surveillance in veterinary practices and awareness-building programs for stakeholders along with the strengthening of the capacity of DLS are recommended for effective containment of AMR emergence and dissemination in the animal health sector of Bangladesh., (Copyright: © Al Amin, et al.)

The milk of lactating cows presents a complex ecosystem of interconnected microbial communities which can influence the pathophysiology of mastitis. We hypothesized possible dynamic shifts of microbiome composition and genomic features with different pathological conditions of mastitis (Clinical Mastitis; CM, Recurrent CM; RCM, Subclinical Mastitis; SCM). To evaluate this hypothesis, we employed whole metagenome sequencing (WMS) in 20 milk samples (CM, 5; RCM, 6; SCM, 4; H, 5) to unravel the microbiome dynamics, interrelation, and relevant metabolic functions. The WMS data mapped to 442 bacterial, 58 archaeal and 48 viral genomes with distinct variation in microbiome composition (CM > H > RCM > SCM). Furthermore, we identified a number of microbial genomic features, including 333, 304, 183 and 50 virulence factors-associated genes (VFGs) and 48, 31, 11 and 6 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in CM, RCM, SCM, and H-microbiomes, respectively. We also detected different metabolic pathway and functional genes associated with mastitis pathogenesis. The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is a highly transmittable and pathogenic viral infection caused by a novel evolutionarily divergent RNA virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus first emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and subsequently spreaded around the world. Genomic analyses revealed that this zoonotic virus may be evolved naturally but not a purposefully manipulated laboratory construct. However, currently available data are not sufficient to precisely conclude the origin of this fearsome virus. Comprehensive annotations of the whole-genomes revealed hundreds of nucleotides, and amino acids mutations, substitutions and/or deletions at different positions of the ever changing SARS-CoV-2 genome. The spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 possesses a functional polybasic (furin) cleavage site at the S1-S2 boundary through the insertion of 12 nucleotides. It leads to the predicted acquisition of 3- O -linked glycan around the cleavage site. Although real-time RT-PCR methods targeting specific gene(s) have widely been used to diagnose the COVID-19 patients, however, recently developed more convenient, cheap, rapid, and specific diagnostic tools targeting antigens or CRISPR-Cas-mediated method or a newly developed plug and play method should be available for the resource-poor developing countries. A large number of candidate drugs, vaccines and therapies have shown great promise in early trials, however, these candidates of preventive or therapeutic agents have to pass a long path of trials before being released for the practical application against COVID-19. This review updates current knowledge on origin, genomic evolution, development of the diagnostic tools, and the preventive or therapeutic remedies of the COVID-19. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel evolutionary divergent RNA virus, is responsible for the present devastating COVID-19 pandemic. To explore the genomic signatures, we comprehensively analyzed 2,492 complete and/or near-complete genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 strains reported from across the globe to the GISAID database up to 30 March 2020. Genome-wide annotations revealed 1,516 nucleotide-level variations at different positions throughout the entire genome of SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, nucleotide (nt) deletion analysis found twelve deletion sites throughout the genome other than previously reported deletions at coding sequence of the ORF8 (open reading frame), spike, and ORF7a proteins, specifically in polyprotein ORF1ab (n = 9), ORF10 (n = 1), and 3´-UTR (n = 2). Evidence from the systematic gene-level mutational and protein profile analyses revealed a large number of amino acid (aa) substitutions (n = 744), demonstrating the viral proteins heterogeneous. Notably, residues of receptor-binding domain (RBD) showing crucial interactions with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and cross-reacting neutralizing antibody were found to be conserved among the analyzed virus strains, except for replacement of lysine with arginine at 378th position of the cryptic epitope of a Shanghai isolate, hCoV-19/Shanghai/SH0007/2020 (EPI&#95;ISL&#95;416320). Furthermore, our results of the preliminary epidemiological data on SARS-CoV-2 infections revealed that frequency of aa mutations were relatively higher in the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences of Europe (43.07%) followed by Asia (38.09%), and North America (29.64%) while case fatality rates remained higher in the European temperate countries, such as Italy, Spain, Netherlands, France, England and Belgium. Thus, the present method of genome annotation employed at this early pandemic stage could be a promising tool for monitoring and tracking the continuously evolving pandemic situation, the associated genetic variants, and their implications for the development of effective control and prophylaxis strategies.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiologic agent of the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a public health emergency of international concerns declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). An immuno-informatics approach along with comparative genomics was applied to design a multi-epitope-based peptide vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 combining the antigenic epitopes of the S, M, and E proteins. The tertiary structure was predicted, refined and validated using advanced bioinformatics tools. The candidate vaccine showed an average of ≥90.0% world population coverage for different ethnic groups. Molecular docking and dynamics simulation of the chimeric vaccine with the immune receptors (TLR3 and TLR4) predicted efficient binding. Immune simulation predicted significant primary immune response with increased IgM and secondary immune response with high levels of both IgG1 and IgG2. It also increased the proliferation of T-helper cells and cytotoxic T-cells along with the increased IFN-γ and IL-2 cytokines. The codon optimization and mRNA secondary structure prediction revealed that the chimera is suitable for high-level expression and cloning. Overall, the constructed recombinant chimeric vaccine candidate demonstrated significant potential and can be considered for clinical validation to fight against this global threat, COVID-19., Competing Interests: Keith A. The avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains are the chief etiology of colibacillosis worldwide. The present study investigated the circulating phylotypes, existence of virulence genes (VGs), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 392 APEC isolates, obtained from 130 samples belonged to six farms using both phenotypic and PCR-based molecular approaches. Congo red binding (CRB) assay confirmed 174 APEC isolates which were segregated into ten, nine, and eight distinct genotypes by RAPD assay (discriminatory index, DI = 0.8707), BOX-PCR (DI = 0.8591) and ERIC-PCR (DI = 0.8371), respectively. The combination of three phylogenetic markers ( chu A, yja A and DNA fragment TspE4.C2) classified APEC isolates into B2 3 (37.36%), A1 (33.91%), D2 (11.49%), B2 2 (9.20%), and B1 (8.05%) phylotypes. Majority of the APEC isolates (75-100%) harbored VGs ( ial , fim H, crl , pap C, and cjr C). These VGs ( pap C and cjr C) and phylotypes (D2 and B2) of APEC had significant ( p = 0.004) association with colibacillosis. Phylogenetic analysis showed two distinct clades (clade A and clade B) of APEC, where clade A had 98-100% similarity with E. coli APEC O78 and E. coli EHEC strains, and clade B had closest relationship with E. coli O169:H41 strain. Interestingly, phylogroups B2 and D2 were found in the APEC strains of both clades, while the strains from phylogroups A1 and B1 were found in clade A only. In this study, 81.71% of the isolates were biofilm formers, and possessed plasmids of varying ranges (1.0 to 54 kb). In vitro antibiogram profiling revealed that 100% isolates were resistant to ≥3 antibiotics, of which 61.96%, 55.24%, 53.85%, 51.16% and 45.58% isolates in phylotypes B1, D2, B2 2 , B2 3 , and A1, respectively, were resistant to these antimicrobials. The resistance patterns varied among different phylotypes, notably in phylotype B2 2 , showing the highest resistance to ampicillin (90.91%), nalidixic acid (90.11%), tetracycline (83.72%), and nitrofurantoin (65.12%). Correspondence analysis also showed significant correlation among phylotypes with CRB ( p = 0.008), biofilm formation ( p = 0.02), drug resistance ( p = 0.03), and VGs ( p = 0.06). This report demonstrated that B2 and A1 phylotypes are dominantly circulating APEC phylotypes in Bangladesh; however, B2 and D2 are strongly associated with the pathogenicity. A high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant APEC strains from different phylotypes suggest the use of organic antimicrobial compounds, and/or metals, and the rotational use of antibiotics in poultry farms in Bangladesh.

Bovine clinical mastitis (CM) is one of the most prevalent diseases caused by a wide range of resident microbes. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in CM bacteria is well-known, however, the genomic resistance composition (the resistome) at the microbiome-level is not well characterized. In this study, we applied whole metagenome sequencing (WMS) to characterize the resistome of the CM microbiome, focusing on antibiotics and metals resistance, biofilm formation (BF), and quorum sensing (QS) along with in vitro resistance assays of six selected pathogens isolated from the same CM samples. The WMS generated an average of 21.13 million reads (post-processing) from 25 CM samples that mapped to 519 bacterial strains, of which 30.06% were previously unreported. We found a significant ( P = 0.001) association between the resistomes and microbiome composition with no association with cattle breed, despite significant differences in microbiome diversity among breeds. The in vitro investigation determined that 76.2% of six selected pathogens considered "biofilm formers" actually formed biofilms and were also highly resistant to tetracycline, doxycycline, nalidixic acid, ampicillin, and chloramphenicol and remained sensitive to metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) at varying concentrations. We also found bacterial flagellar movement and chemotaxis, regulation and cell signaling, and oxidative stress to be significantly associated with the pathophysiology of CM. Milk microbiomes significantly influence the pathophysiology of bovine mastitis. To assess the association between microbiome diversity and bovine mastitis, we compared the microbiome of clinical mastitis (CM, n = 14) and healthy (H, n = 7) milk samples through deep whole metagenome sequencing (WMS). A total of 483.38 million reads generated from both metagenomes were analyzed through PathoScope (PS) and MG-RAST (MR), and mapped to 380 bacterial, 56 archaeal, and 39 viral genomes. We observed distinct shifts and differences in abundance between the microbiome of CM and H milk in phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria with an inclusion of 68.04% previously unreported and/or opportunistic strains in CM milk. PS identified 363 and 146 bacterial strains in CM and H milk samples respectively, and MR detected 356 and 251 bacterial genera respectively. Of the identified taxa, 29.51% of strains and 63.80% of genera were shared between both metagenomes. Additionally, 14 archaeal and 14 viral genera were found to be solely associated with CM. Functional annotation of metagenomic sequences identified several metabolic pathways related to bacterial colonization, proliferation, chemotaxis and invasion, immune-diseases, oxidative stress, regulation and cell signaling, phage and prophases, antibiotic and heavy metal resistance that might be associated with CM. Our WMS study provides conclusive data on milk microbiome diversity associated with bovine CM and its role in udder health.

Background: Healthy life expectancy (HALE) at birth is an important indicator of health status and quality of life of a country's population. However, little is known about the determinants of HALE as yet globally or even country-specific level. Thus, we examined the factors that are associated with HALE at birth in low- and lower-middle-income countries., Methods: In accordance with the World Bank (WB) classification seventy-nine low- and lower-middle-income countries were selected for the study. Data on HALE, demographic, socioeconomic, social structural, health, and environmental factors from several reliable sources, such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Program, Population Reference Bureau, WB, Heritage Foundation, Transparency International, Freedom House, and International Center for Prison Studies were obtained as selected countries. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were performed to reach the research objectives., Results: The lowest and highest HALE were observed in Sierra Leone (44.40 years) and in Sri Lanka (67.00 years), respectively. The mean years of schooling, total fertility rate (TFR), physician density, gross national income per capita, health expenditure, economic freedom, carbon dioxide emission rate, freedom of the press, corruption perceptions index, prison population rate, and achieving a level of health-related millennium development goals (MDGs) were revealed as the correlates of HALE. Among all the correlates, the mean years of schooling, TFR, freedom of the press, and achieving a level of health-related MDGs were found to be the most influential factors., Conclusion: To increase the HALE in low- and lower-middle-income countries, we suggest that TFR is to be reduced as well as to increase the mean years of schooling, freedom of the press, and the achievement of a level of health-related MDGs.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common causative agent of bovine mastitis in dairy herds worldwide. This study was designed to assess the prevalence of mastitis in cows through screening tests and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus strains. Out of 175 randomly screened cows, mastitis was detected in 50 cows by California Mastitis Test (CMT), and from those mastitic cows, 200 quarter milk samples were collected for subsequent culture and PCR based identification. The herd, cow and quarter level prevalence of mastitis was 73.3, 28.6 and 29.5% respectively, and subclinical mastitis (SCM) was the predominant type in all cases. According to bacteriology the overall prevalence of herd, cow and quarter level Staphylococcus aureus mastitis was 72.7, 74.0 and 62.0%, respectively, and the pathogen was mostly associated with clinical mastitis (CM). Cows breed, parity, daily milk yield, regular teat dipping, and dry cow therapy were significantly associated ( P  < 0.05) risk factors for mastitis onset. This study identifies 145 Staphylococcus aureus isolates which varied greatly with the categories of mastitis (higher in CM), udder quarter location (highest in right rear quarters), and to a lesser extent in the study areas ( P  < 0.05). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 79.3% Staphylococcus aureus strains were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, 49.0% to two or more antimicrobials, and clinical isolates showed more resistance to all tested antibiotics. The highest resistance rate was found to oxytetracyclin, and no resistance to ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Seven enterotoxin gene profile were detected in the tested isolates, and mecA was found in 20.0% isolates indicating the emergence and spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The isolates were carrying genes in combination, and were found higher in SCM cases. In this study, plasmids (>23 kb to 2.9 kb) were detected in 70.3% strains, and 54.9% plasmid bearing strains were multiple drug resistant (MDR). Thus, the high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis is an important concern for diary industry of Bangladesh since the strains of this pathogen is becoming more resistant to commercially available antimicrobials, and this is an alarming concern for both animal and public health.

Materials with hysteretic multi-step spin-crossover (SCO) have potential application in high-order data storage. Here, an unprecedented hysteretic four-step SCO behavior with the sequence of LS↔HS 0.25 LS 0.75 ↔HS 0.5 LS 0.5 ↔ HS 0.75 LS 0.25 ↔HS is found in a three-dimensional (3D) Hofmann-type metal-organic framework (MOF), which is evidenced by magnetic, differential scanning calorimetry, and crystal data. Administration of vitamin, mineral and antimicrobials at the end of lactation plays potential role in preventing mastitis in dairy cows. A total of 255 cows dividing into five groups (A = 50, B = 50, C = 50, D = 50 and E = 55) at their late gestation period were selected to explore the effect of vitamin E, selenium and antimicrobial therapy on mastitis incidence, their productive and reproductive performances. Each cow of group A received α-tocopherol + sodium selenite orally daily for last 30 days before calving, while each cow of group B, C and D was treated with α-tocopherol + sodium selenite intramuscular injection, procaine penicillin + neomycin sulfate, and dicloxacillin sodium intramammary infusions at Day 30-20 before calving, respectively. Group E cows served as untreated control. California mastitis test (CMT) revealed that 70.0%, 76.0%, 84.0% and 100.0% cows in group A, B, C and D, respectively were free from new intramammary infections (IMIs) during early lactation period. The bacteriological results showed highest IMIs rates (76.3%) in group E and lowest IMIs (2.0%) in group D ( P  < 0.05). Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were the most predominant udder pathogens in all groups except group D (only CNS). The mean IMIs incidence (20.5%) was significantly lower in treated cows ( P  < 0.001). The treated cows had higher cure rates (81.9%) than control cows (23.1%) and overall efficacy of treatments on cure rates was 71.8% for all mastitis pathogens ( P  < 0.0001). The productive and reproductive performances of the treated cows at postpartum and early lactation period remained always higher than their non-treated counterparts ( P  < 0.001). A number of cow and herd related factors were identified to be significantly associated with mastitis ( P  < 0.001). The results concluded that antimicrobial therapy had more beneficial effect in preventing mastitis over vitamin-mineral administration and intramammary infusion with dicloxacillin sodium remained as the best effective preventive strategies for mastitis in dairy cows.

Practical hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) must endure temperatures above the tetragonal-cubic structural phase transition of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ). However, the ionic and optical properties of MAPbI 3 in such a temperature range, and particularly, dramatic changes in these properties resulting from a structural phase transition, are not well studied. Herein, we report a striking contrast at approximately 45 °C in the ionic/electrical properties of MAPbI 3 owing to a change of the ion activation energy from 0.7 to 0.5 eV, whereas the optical properties exhibit no particular transition except for the steady increase of the bandgap with temperature. These observations can be explained by the "continuous" nature of perovskite phase transition. We speculate that the critical temperature at which the ionic/electrical properties change, although related to crystal symmetry variation, is not necessarily the same temperature as when tetragonal-cubic structural phase transition occurs., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Objective: The natural history of incidental pineal cysts is poorly understood. Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists are more frequently faced with this disease in the advent of higher-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning. We aim to suggest a suitable surveillance strategy for these patients., Methods: All patients who had MRI of the brain between June 2007 and January 2014 (n = 42,099) at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery were included. Radiologic reports containing the terms "pineal" and "cyst" were reviewed to identify patients., Results: A total of 281 patients were identified with pineal cysts. The principal indication for head MRI was headache (50.2%), although no symptoms were deemed attributable to pineal disease. A total of 178 patients (63.3%) were female, and the age at diagnosis ranged from 16 to 84 years. The median size of pineal cyst at diagnosis was 10 mm. A total of 181 patients had subsequent follow-up at a median time of 6 months (range, 1-68). Eleven pineal cysts (6%) changed size during the follow-up period. Four patients had a reduction in cyst size; the median change was 2.5 mm. A further 7 pineal cysts increased in cyst size; the median change was 2 mm. No patients developed complications., Conclusions: Incidental pineal cysts typically show a benign course. In the adult population, they do not require long-term neurosurgical follow-up, because pineal cysts tend to remain a stable size. In asymptomatic patients, we recommend a single follow-up MRI scan at 12 months to confirm diagnosis. Background: Contraceptive use plays a significant role in controlling fertility, particularly in reaching the replacement level of fertility. The association between women's employment status and contraceptive use is poorly studied and understood in Bangladesh. The aim of this study was to determine the factors that influence contraceptive use among employed and unemployed women in Bangladesh., Methods: Data and necessary information of 16,616 married women were extracted from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2011. The cross sectional data has been used for univariate analysis, to carry out the description of the variables; bivariate analysis, to find the associations among the variables; and binary logistic regression analysis, to evaluate the effects of selected sociodemographic factors on contraceptive use., Results: The results revealed that the contraceptive use was found higher among employed women (67%) than that of unemployed women. Women's age, education, region, number of living children, and child preference were found to be significantly associated with current use of contraception among employed women. On the other hand, women's age, education, husband's education, region, residence, religion, number of living children, ever heard about family planning, and child preference were identified as the significant predictors of contraceptive use among unemployed women., Conclusion and Global Health Implications: A gap in using contraceptives among employed and unemployed women is identified. By creating employment opportunities for women to be enhanced the contraceptive use. Anion complexation properties of two new tripodal amide receptors have been extensively studied here. Two tripodal receptors have been synthesized from the reaction of cyanobenzoyl acid chloride with two tri-amine building blocks such as (i) tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and (ii) tris(2-(4-aminophenoxy)ethyl)amine, which resulted in the first (L1) and second (L2) generation tripodal amides respectively. A detailed comparison of their coordination behavior with anions is also described by crystallographic and solution state experiments. The crystal structure demonstrates various types of spatial orientations of tripodal arms in two receptors and concomitantly interacts with anions distinctively. Intramolecular H-bonding between amide N–H and CO prevents opening of the receptor cavity in the crystal, which leads to a locked conformation of L1 having C(3v) symmetry and makes amide hydrogen unavailable for the anion which results in side cleft anion binding. However, in L2 we conveniently shift the anion binding sites to a distant position which increases cavity size as well as rules out any intramolecular H-bonding between amide N–H and CO. The crystal structure shows a different orientation of the arms in L2; it adopts a quasi-planar arrangement with C(2v) symmetry. In the crystal structure two arms are pointed in the same direction and while extending the contact the third arm is H-bonded with the apical N-atom through a –CN group, making a pseudo capsular cavity where the anion interacts. Most importantly spatial reorientation of the receptor L2 from a C(2v) symmetry to a folded conformation with a C(3v) symmetry was observed only in the presence of an octahedral SiF6(2-) anion and forms a sandwich type complex. Receptors L1 and L2 are explored for their solution state anion binding abilities. The substantial changes in chemical shifts were observed for the amide (-NH) and aromatic hydrogen (-CH) (especially for F(-)), indicating the role of these hydrogens in anion binding. The anion interacts with receptor L2 more strongly than L1 as confirmed by 1H NMR titration upon monitoring the -NH signal.

We report controllable near fields around split-ring resonator (SRR) gaps of an active terahertz metamaterial. As extension of parallel-plate capacitors, patterned VO 2 is integrated into the metallic SRRs to manipulate the near-field intensity and hot spot size through its metal-insulator transition. This design enhances the device reliability by preventing VO 2 dielectric breakdown at a strongly enhanced near field. The near-field intensity and spot size are tunable in broad ranges, and the device is demonstrated to be capable of compensating resonant frequency drift arisen from different interactions due to near-field coupling. It provides an effective method to actively manipulate the light-matter interaction through the strongly enhanced and tunable near fields.

Background: Reproductive health (RH) is a critical component of women's health and overall well-being around the world, especially in developing countries. We examine the factors that determine knowledge of RH care among female university students in Bangladesh., Methods: Data on 300 female students were collected from Rajshahi University, Bangladesh through a structured questionnaire using purposive sampling technique. The data were used for univariate analysis, to carry out the description of the variables; bivariate analysis was used to examine the associations between the variables; and finally, multivariate analysis (binary logistic regression model) was used to examine and fit the model and interpret the parameter estimates, especially in terms of odds ratios., Results: The results revealed that more than one-third (34.3%) respondents do not have sufficient knowledge of RH care. The χ (2)-test identified the significant (p < 0.05) associations between respondents' knowledge of RH care with respondents' age, education, family type, watching television; and knowledge about pregnancy, family planning, and contraceptive use. Finally, the binary logistic regression model identified respondents' age, education, family type; and knowledge about family planning, and contraceptive use as the significant (p < 0.05) predictors of RH care., Conclusions and Global Health Implications: Knowledge of RH care among female university students was found unsatisfactory. Government and concerned organizations should promote and strengthen various health education programs to focus on RH care especially for the female university students in Bangladesh.

Identification of cows with subclinical mastitis (SCM) is an important tool for sustainable dairying and implementing effective mastitis control strategies. A total of 892 quarters milk samples from 228 lactating cows were screened by California mastitis test (CMT), White side test (WST), Surf field mastitis test (SFMT), and somatic cell count (SCC) to study the prevalence of bovine SCM in some selected areas of Bangladesh. Out of 228 cows, 148 (64.9%), 138 (60.5%), 132 (57.9%), and 164 (71.9%) were found positive for SCM by CMT, WST, SFMT, and SCC, respectively. The prevalence of bovine SCM was diagnosed 45.7, 40.2, 36.6, and 29.6% in Chittagong, Sirajgonj, Mymensingh, and Gazipur districts, respectively, based on a combination of all tests. The overall quarter-wise prevalence of SCM was 45.7, 43.5, 41.2, and 55.0% for CMT, WST, SFMT, and SCC. Single quarters and left front quarters were more prone to SCM (P < 0.05). Friesian crossbred cows (56.4%), BCS 2.0-2.5 (55.4%), and parity 4-6 (52.4%), the late lactation stage (5-8 months; 64.7%) and high yielding cows (16-20 L/day; 65.3%) were more susceptible to SCM (P < 0.05). The sensitivity of the CMT, WST, SFMT, and SCC was 65.8, 57.9, 51.0, and 82.5%; specificity 76.2, 72.4, 69.5, and 89.4%; percentage accuracy 70.0, 64.8, 59.9, and 85.2%; positive predictive value 75.2, 69.8, 64.9, and 92.7%, respectively. The categories of CMT reactions were strongly correlated with SCC (P < 0.05). Kappa value of SCC was higher than that of other tests (SCC>CMT>WST>SFMT). Thus, CMT was concluded to be the most accurate (r = 0.782) field diagnostic test after laboratory test like SCC (r = 0.924). However, the use of any single test may not be reliable in diagnosing SCM, while the result of CMT supported by SCC might be used effectively to pinpoint diagnosis of SCM in dairy animals than alone.

An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active probe (L) displayed TURN-ON fluorescence response toward Al(3+) under physiological conditions and in HeLa cells. The L-Al(3+) ensemble could subsequently facilitate tracking of interaction with DNA in solution.

We report the selective recognition of sulfate anion in aqueous medium at biological pH 7.2 over the other interfering anions based on naphthoic acid bearing tripodal ligand by applying fluorescence turn off -on mechanism. The carboxylic acid groups in the ligand enhance the solubility in water and enable it to form complex with copper salt. Thus formed L-Cu2+ ensemble quench the fluorescence of the parent ligand and in turn recognize sulfate anion via revival of fluorescence intensity. The 1:2 stoichiometry was confirmed by ESI mass spectral data and Job's plot. The average binding constant was found to be 6.2×10(8) M(-2).

Adverse drug reaction to tuberculous chemotherapy is not an uncommon problem. Usually it occurs to single drug and can be treated easily with minimal intervention. We follow WHO recommended guideline for National Tuberculosis Control Programs to treat these adverse reactions. Here we found an adult who has been suffering left sided pleural tuberculosis developed anaphylactic reaction to first dose of category-1 anti-TB regime. Later on it was found that he could not even tolerate smaller challenging doses of isoniazide, Ethambutol, Rifampicin and Pyrazinamide separately. It became very difficult to choose an alternate regime for this patient. Lastly a regime with levofloxacin, streptomycin and clarithromycin was give to treat him and patient was recovered with this regime successfully. This experience will help in management of unusual drug reactions to anti-tuberculosis drugs.

Chronic hepatitis B and C virus infection can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Several studies investigated the diagnostic and prognostic value of some biochemical markers to detect the hepatic fibrosis and found a correlation between serum markers and hepatic fibrosis. Among them serum hyaluronic acid (HA) has been identified as a potential marker of fibrosis or cirrhosis in different studies. A prospective study in 60 subjects was conducted to evaluate the association between serum HA and hepatic fibrosis. Thirty consecutive patients with chronic HBV or HCV infection undergoing liver biopsy were studied. Sera were obtained for HA using enzyme linked protein binding assay. Patients with hepatic fibrosis had higher serum HA concentration compared with healthy subjects (236.65 ± 227.07 vs. 23.32 ± 14.22 respectively, p<0.001). Correlation was found between high serum HA concentration and increasing degree of hepatic fibrosis (R-0.322 and p<0.041). This study had shown a good correlation between serum HA and different stages of hepatic fibrosis. So serum HA may be used as a useful marker of hepatic fibrosis.

The diversification of the rural population of the United States provides substantial challenges to the current and to future health care systems in rural areas. Because of a variety of historical, discriminatory, and other factors, minority populations have had lower levels of access to health care in rural as well as urban areas and higher rates of both mortality and morbidity than nonminority populations. Although minority health issues have often been seen as primarily urban issues, this article demonstrates that minority population growth has become a major component of total population growth in rural areas in the past several decades (accounting for nearly 62% of the net growth in the nonmetropolitan population of the United States in the 1980s and for nearly 42% in the 1990s), that future US population growth is likely to be largely a product of minority population growth (nearly 89% of US net population growth from 2000 to 2100 is projected to be due to minority population growth), and that the incidence of diseases and disorders in the US population will come to increasingly involve minority populations (by 2050 roughly 43% of all disease/disorder incidences would involve minority population members). The growth of younger minority populations with disproportionately impoverished socioeconomic characteristics will pose challenges for rural areas and health care systems, which also are likely to face health issues created by disproportionately older populations.

Changes in the size, distribution and composition of the population of the United States will have significant effects on health care professionals in the coming years. For dentists and other professionals involved in health care provision, it is likely that among the effects of demographic change will be change in the characteristics of their patient base, change in the characteristics of health professionals, and potential change in the socioeconomic resources of their patients. In this article, we describe current and expected future patterns of change in the population of the United States and discuss their significance for dentistry in the twenty-first century.

In this paper we examine the effects of socioeconomic development, the status of women, and family planning on fertility and the extent to which these effects vary among the nineteen districts of Bangladesh. The 1983 and 1991 Bangladesh Contraceptive Prevalence Survey data are used to examine the effects of these factors on differences in contraceptive use among currently married women aged 15-49. The proportion of currently married women aged 15-49 using contraception was 46.3 per cent in 1991, a considerable increase from 26.5 per cent in 1983. Contraceptive use rates for all the districts increased substantially over the period between 1983 and 1991 and the gap between Dhaka's rate and those of other districts was narrower in 1991 than in 1983. An analytical model composed of socioeconomic development, status of women, and family planning variables is tested using logistic regression. The logit model is used to evaluate the effects of a selected group of variables on the probability of using contraceptive methods. The analysis demonstrates clearly that socioeconomic development and women's status significantly impact the use of contraceptive methods in Bangladesh. The results also suggest that better-educated, employed women are more likely to use contraception than those who have little or no formal education and who are not employed. In 1983, rural-urban differences in contraceptive use were significant, but in 1991 area of residence was not significant, which suggests that family planning programs may have played an important role in providing contraceptive information and technology to rural areas. Our analysis also suggests that family planning programs operated more efficiently in some districts than in others, and regional differences remained important in 1991 as they were in 1983. Decomposition analysis suggests that shifts in population structure favored increased contraceptive use in Bangladesh. This analysis also indicates that change in rate is also important, contributing about 21 per cent of the overall increase in contraceptive use.
