A retrospective case-control study of patients attending an urban HIV clinic was done to identify potential risk factors for Diabetes mellitus (DM) in HIV-infected patients. The findings of the study suggested a complex interaction among genetic factors, body composition, and liver injury in the pathogenesis of DM in HIV-infected patients.

Abstract

Transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from mother-to-child in sub-Saharan Africa has shown a decrease with the use of nevirapine (NVP) and zidovudine (ZDV) and a test was conducted to determine risk of mother-to-child transmission when either standard use of NVP alone or when combined with ZDV was administered to infants of women tested at delivery. Test results were comparable with that of other perinatal HIV intervention studies among breastfeeding women in Africa.

Abstract

A study conducted to examine whether total lymphocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin, and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response observed prior to initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) predict post-HAART clinical response, is presented. Pre-HAART TLC, hemoglobin level, anergy to DTH testing, and clinical disease predicted morbidity and death after HAART initiation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine associations between frailty and fracture in women with and without HIV infection. DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal cohort study evaluating associations between baseline frailty status and frailty components, with first and second incident fractures. METHODS: We evaluated associations of frailty with fracture among 1332 women with HIV and 532 uninfected women without HIV. Frailty was defined as ≥3 of 5 Fried Frailty Index (FFI) components: slow gait, reduced grip strength, exhaustion, unintentional weight loss, and low physical activity. Abstract

A public campaign to promote the use of condoms in brothels has dramatically reduced the incidence of HIV infection in young men in Thailand. In 1990, the Ministry of Public Health ordered the distribution of condoms to all Thai brothels and began a media campaign to encourage their use. A survey of Thai soldiers found that the prevalence of HIV infection fell from 10% to 12% in 1991 to 6.7% in 1995. The percentage of men who had sex with prostitutes fell from 81.4% to 63.8%. And the percentage of men who used condoms increased from 61% to 92.5%. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases fell from 42.2% to 15.2%.

Abstract

A new type of herpes virus called Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) appears to be linked to Kaposi's sarcoma. In a study of HIV-infected men with and without Kaposi's sarcoma, 80% of those with Kaposi's sarcoma had antibodies against KSHV, compared to 18% of those without Kaposi's sarcoma. None of the control group consisting of 122 blood donors, 22 Epstein-Barr virus-infected people and HIV-infected hemophiliacs had antibodies to KSHV. Half of the HIV-infected men with Kaposi's sarcoma became KSHV-positive 6 months to 6 years before developing Kaposi's sarcoma.
