In this chapter, we explore the nature of migration as it applies to crossing system-retirement life cycle boundaries gracefully, intending to inform purposeful design of would-be, long-lived, always-effective enterprises, and the systems that support them. We use previous work on agile systems and enterprises to define migration as the crossing of a change in basic infrastructure, be it technical, organizational, or strategic. We consider the classic view of the system life cycle and highlight its limitations in a rapidly changing world. We analyze two successful and contemporary large-scale migrations and illuminate the factors that facilitated their success, contributing toward a pattern language for agile-system architecture in the process. Finally, the lessons of the analysis are suggested as potential informants for force transformation in the US military and adoption of service-oriented architectures in the enterprise.

The study presents the Children’s Daily Activities-Parental Beliefs (CDA-PB) scale, a newly developed instrument providing parental assessment of the developmental significance of family-based, preschool children’s daily activities. These activities are considered as primary contexts for understanding children’s learning and development and parental beliefs are critical for both the organization of such activities as well as parents’ participation in them. Study informants were 383 mothers of preschool children attending daycare centres and kindergartens in the greater Athens area in Greece. Mothers completed a self-report questionnaire which included the CDA-PB and two other scales targeting at the report of the frequency of daily activities’ occurrence and mothers’ participation in them. Following a series of principal component analysis with varimax rotation the final form of the CDA-PB scale consisted of 30 items loaded on five components representing the perceived significance for certain types of activities, namely: “Household and self-care activities”, “Recurrent outings”, “Pre-academic activities”, “Play activities”, and “Home entertainment activities”. In addition, inter-correlations were revealed with the other two scales. Overall, the results are compatible with empirical evidence from different cultural settings and provide initial support for the use of this scale. Limitations of the present study and future research priorities are also addressed.

3D vision is becoming increasingly important, in major motion pictures as well as in home entertainment. Depth map generation plays a major role in 2D-to-3D conversion and acts as a precursory stage to Depth Based Image Rendering (DIBR). This paper presents a novel algorithm for depth map generation using a block based approach. The algorithm is composed of 2 parts: Background depth map generation and moving object detection and filling. The quality of generated depth maps is adequate, considering the block based approach. The proposed algorithm is suitable for VLSI implementation.

Directed by Herbert Wilcox. RKO Pictures, 1939; DD Home Entertainment DVD, 2008. 94 mins. Film; history of medical; Nurse Film; Nursing History; World War I; Belgium Edith Cavell became famous posthumously for organising and assisting the escape of between 200 and 1000 prisoners of war (POW) from occupied Belgium during World War One. The release on DVD of a 1939 film about her clandestine activities provides a good opportunity to reassess the representation of nurses as heroines with Cavell’s selfless behaviour as thought provoking now as in 1915, and to highlight other figures in nursing in a history still dominated by Florence Nightingale. Nurse Edith Cavell was directed by Englishman Herbert Wilcox and starred English actress Anna Neagle (later to become Wilcox’s wife). Anna Neagle was already a famous screen star in the UK. In her partnership with Wilcox, she had recently portrayed Nell Gwyn and Queen Victoria, and went on to portray Florence Nightingale ( Lady with a lamp , 1951). She appeared as a nurse again, as the Matron in No time for tears (1957). Julia Hallam1 speculates that Neagle’s films about nursing perhaps did more than any of the government’s recruitment films to inspire British women to join the profession. The film begins in December 1913, showing Cavell attending patients in the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels, where Cavell is Matron. Then the film fast-forwards through snapshots of the events leading up …

In this paper, we design and implement a novel all-in-one Media Center that can be directly connected to a high-definition television (HDTV). C# programming is used for developing modular structured media center for home entertainment. Therefore it is possible and easy to add new limitless number of modules and software components. The most importantly, user interface is designed by considering two important factors; simplicity and tidiness. Proposed media center provides opportunities to users to have an experience on listening to music/radio, watching TV, connecting to Internet, online Internet videos, editing videos, Internet connection to pharmacy on duty, checking weather conditions, song lyrics, CD/DVD burning, connecting to Wikipedia. All the modules and design steps are explained in details for user friendly cost effective all-in-one media center.

Automotive Systems ,energy efficient ,Hardware supports ,Home entertainment ,Numa architectures ,Hardware support ,Automotive System - Abstract
High-end embedded systems such as smart phones, game consoles, GPS-enabled automotive systems, and home entertainment centers, are becoming ubiquitous. Like their general-purpose counterparts, and for many of the same energy-related reasons, embedded sys- tems are turning to multicore architectures. Moreover, as the de- mand for more compute-intensive capabilities for embedded sys- tems increases, these multicore architectures will evolve into many- core systems for improved performance or performance/area/Watt. These systems are often organized as cluster based Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architectures that provide the program- mer with a shared-memory abstraction, with the cost of sharing memory (in terms of performance, energy, and complexity) varying substantially depending on the locations of the communicating pro- cesses. This paper investigates one of the principal challenges pre- sented by these emerging NUMA architectures for embedded sys- tems: providing efficient, energy-effective and convenient mecha- nisms for synchronization and communication. In this paper, we propose an initial solution based on hardware support for specula- tive synchronization.

Home entertainment systems comprising multiple TV screens offer new opportunities to display more content, accommodate more viewers, and deliver enriched user experiences. In many cases, such installations take the form of mixed-reality environments, in which video projections coexist with physical TV sets. We refer to such installations as interactive TV potpourris, due to their composite nature of hybridizing individual TV screens of different natures, form factors, and potential to render different multimedia types. This work discusses current implementations for interactive TV potpourris, identifies technical and interaction challenges, and pinpoints future research and development directions. It is our hope that this work will encourage new explorations and developments of TV potpourris.

When I worked for the Criterion Collection, we visited the home of a movie collector to shoot some of the items in his collection for the supplementary section of a laser disc that we were producing. Since the collector was busy the moment we arrived, his wife greeted us and showed us into their living area, which had a high ceiling to the roof of the town house. Against one wall was a staircase to the second floor. Both it and two other walls were covered with movie posters, lobby cards, and other artifacts. Against the fourth wall stood a bank of shelves that sandwiched a medium-size home entertainment center between hundreds of videotapes. As it turned out, the collector had not been able to greet us because he had been in the midst of recording a movie off cable, and had not wanted to run the risk of missing any of the film as it came on after the commercial break. All the while we were there, he monitored the broadcast, simultaneously conversing with us and keeping the remote in hand. I do not know if this collector ever watched his collection. Given its size, and his devotion to its growth, I doubt it. Like many video collectors, he was stuck on the video paradox: the more time devoted to taping materials for the collection, the less time available to watch them. To take the time to watch some

The emergence of new radical technologies demands innovative answers of an established industry. With reference to the threat of obsolescence, research in the Home Entertainment Industry's innovation strategies presents a paradigm, which suggests that due to path-dependence, this particular industry suffers from a lock-in effect in its core technology, which is enhanced by deep roots in monocultures of product, infrastructure and client base. Long-term research argues that these three causes effect a holistic lock-in, globally expressed in declining demand. Industrial experts expect the obsolescence of the manufacturing part of this industry in the near future. The conclusion is that the path-dependent innovations made are too marginal for survival on radically changing markets.

Internet-enabled television systems, often referred to as Smart TVs, are a new development in television and home entertainment technologies. In this work, we propose a new, privacy-preserving, approach for Television Audience Measurement (TAM), utilizing the capabilities of the Smart TV technologies. We propose a novel application to calculate aggregate audience measurements using Smart TV computation capabilities and permanent Internet access. Cryptographic techniques, including homomorphic encryption and zero-knowledge proofs, are used to ensure both that the privacy of the participating individuals is preserved and that the computed results are valid. Additionally, participants can be compensated for sharing their information. Preliminary experimental results on an Android-based Smart TV platform show the viability of the approach.

Technological advancements are constant. When newer technologies such as UWB, WiMAX and LTE were introduced there was great anticipation that these technologies would fulfill the need for greater reach at higher data rates. Compared to Wi-Fi rates these three technologies offered much higher data rates. However, some of the applications essential for wireless home entertainment require video transmission with low latency. This new demand on technology is easily met by wired systems. The focus is on providing the same experience by wireless means through interconnection of several of the existing devices such as laptop, TV and cell phone. The newer technologies that are emerging for high speed wireless video delivery are WiHD, WHDI and WiDi. In this paper we will analyze where the technology stands today with respect to these three technologies as well as UWB, WiMAX and LTE.

Home entertainment ,Advertising ,Sociology - Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to explore the current scope and character of home entertainment in its many electronic forms (including television, video games and music) focusing particularly on the changing nature of consumer interaction with it. Through an examination of the various forces that have driven its development, the chapter will look at the more significant aspects of its evolution in the decade since 2000 and make some informed judgements about how it might develop in the next. The term ‘home entertainment’ has covered a vast range of activities during its long history. The first well-documented evidence of people spending significant time and resources on entertaining themselves at home emerge from Sumerian, Roman and Greek texts. As Juvenal notes, it seemed that all Romans were interested in was ‘bread and circuses’, and from relatively early time, wealthier ones saw the opportunity to have both at home, hosting their own dinner parties and banquets. Along with dinner could be music, singing, and dancing by professionals. Such group activities might also be accompanied by more solitary pursuits such as reading, and individuals making their own entertainment through playing musical instruments or reciting poetry.

‘Interactive multimedia’ was, only a few years ago, just a fuzzy shape on the horizon of new technology. With rapid developments in computing, telecommunications and home entertainment, interactive multimedia now describes a range of products for corporate and consumer markets which — after more than a decade of promise and potential — are setting standards for the decade to come. A handful of products are of particular interest to libraries now; however, a wide range of products and issues, from electronic books and computer games to compression technology and networking, will profoundly influence the future of publishing and communications. This article identifies some of the key issues and platforms including interactive video (IV), multimedia computers, electronic books, and optical discs in the LaserDisc and compact disc (CD) formats.

This paper discusses basic requirements for passive ultra-wideband (UWB) localization systems that aim at home-entertainment applications such as smart audio systems, which can adapt the sound according to the user location, providing an optimum listening experience to the user. We have analyzed over hundred thousand channel impulse responses measured by a real-time UWB channel sounder in different scenarios. Our analyses show that passive localization systems must possess a large real-time dynamic range in order to be capable of detecting a listener. We assume that the listener does not carry any tag and is detected and localized just by electro-magnetic (EM) waves reflected from his body. Such passive localization is demonstrated by a measurement example.

The digital home electronics industry has emerged as a result of development of telecommunication, home entertainment, and remote control technology during the past decade. Most leading countries in the information technology (IT) industries (i.e. South Korea, Taiwan, etc.) intended to develop the digital home electronics industry as the next dominant industry for sustain the growth of nations' wealth. Albeit the Taiwanese government has tried to develop the digital home electronics industry by investing a lot of efforts and resources through policy tools including joint specification definition as well as industrial consortium organization, the achievement is limited. To resolve this problem, the innovation policy tools should be reviewed and reconfigured. Industrial innovation requirements for developing the digital home electronics industry will first be reviewed as the criteria. Innovation policy tools will also be derived from literature review as alternatives. Then, a hybrid MADM (Multiple Attribute Decision Making) framework consisting of DEMATEL and ANP will be introduced for deriving appropriate innovation policy tools for developing Taiwanese digital home electronics industry. Experts from research and academic institutes and the Taiwanese government will be invited for defining the innovation policy. The innovation policy being derived can be used for developing Taiwanese digital home electronics industry and enhance the Nation's wealth.

Media are “[media] means effecting or conveying something such as (1) a surrounding or enveloping substance; or (2) a condition or environment in which something may function or flourish; or (3) mode of artistic expression or communication.”(Merriam-Webster, n.d.) In the case of ambient media, the humans’ natural environment becomes to the “enveloping media” as an environment in which content functions. This work therefore deals with the development of ambient media, far beyond seeing TV as a major entertainment platform in consumers’ homes. To satisfy the entertainment-hungry consumer, more and more advanced home entertainment (HE) systems and facilities are required to provide interactive and smart leisure content. This chapter glimpses the future of modern ambient HE systems. Experts in the field of ambient media discuss and contribute to four major lines of the future development of ambient media: (1) social implications, (2) converging media, (3) consumer content, and (4) smart devices.

Embedded network devices have become an ubiquitous fixture in the modern home, office as well as in the global communication infrastructure. Devices like routers, NAS appliances, home entertainment appliances, wifi access points, web cams, VoIP appliances, print servers and video conferencing units reside on the same networks as our personal computers and enterprise servers and together form our world-wide communication infrastructure. Widely deployed and often misconfigured, they constitute highly attractive targets for exploitation. In this study we present the results of a vulnerability assessment of embedded network devices within the world's largest ISPs and civilian networks, spanning North America, Europe and Asia. The observed data confirms the intuition that these devices are indeed vulnerable to trivial attacks and that such devices can be found throughout the world in large numbers.

High-definition television (HDTV) will be the third revolution in home entertainment following the introduction of the first monochrome TV back in 1939 and colour in 1954. The world-wide market for HDTV has been estimated at between $20 000M–$40 000M by the year 2010. The effect of HDTV will be felt in other fields such as advanced semiconductors (e.g. memory chips) and high-resolution display technologies. The present position of electroluminescent (EL) displays is assessed. The requirements for HDTV are outlined first, followed by a review of the state-of-the-art of each of the four principal EL forms. The strenghts and shortcomings of each type are highlighted. Finally, some recommendations for areas of research that must be tackled to render EL a viable technology for HDTV will be presented.

—A number of technologies are emerging that enable the creation of a market for networked consumer electronic devices for home use. As this market emerges, the research area of home networking is increasing in importance. In this paper, we first present some motivating use cases from the application area of networked home entertainment to illustrate the requirements posed on home networks, both for local and for remote access. The emphasis is on the use of mobile devices. We describe the challenges facing both the manufacturers and consumers in creating and using such home networks. Since the users of these systems are non-expert consumers, we argue that the most important challenge is creating easy-to-use, self-configuring and self-healing home networks. Finally, we present a de-centralized architecture and an overview of technologies that can be used to enable local and remote access to home networks using mobile devices. Index Terms—Home networking, networked consumer electronics, local home access, remote home access.

Multimedia devices, services, and content are already distributed inside the home network. Mobility, sharing and IP based delivery mechanisms introduce additional challenges to accessibility by extending the range of distribution into interconnected home and Internet scale scenarios. However, the user should be able to access any of these targets in a satisfying, easy, and uniform way despite the differences in target and interaction device technologies. This paper proposes and demonstrates how RESTful and declarative approach could be used in solving extended accessibility and usability problems. In the proposed solution, the network becomes the media center, as one of the networked devices operates as a hub between targets and UI devices, while the actual media is streamed in out of band P2P fashion.

International audience; We propose an efficient real-time method for marker-less 3D human motion capture that requires a single computer. Using input from two calibrated webcams, an extended "Shape from Silhouette" algorithm reconstructs the filmed person in real-time. Fasts 3D shape and 3D skin parts analysis provide a robust and real-time system for human full-body tracking. Animation skeleton and simple morphological constraints ease the motion capture process. Thanks to fast and simple algorithms, and appliance to low-cost cameras, our system is well suited for home entertainment device. Results on long video sequences with fast and complex movements, demonstrate our approach robustness.

In the beginning, there was mono. Everything we heard was stored in and reproduced from a single channel. In those early days, listeners enthused, and critics applauded the efforts of Edison, Berliner, and others as being the closest possible to reality. They were wrong, but a revolution in home entertainment had taken place.

In March 2003, we proposed a small biped-walking home-entertainment robot SDR-4XII (Sony Dream Robot-4XII, a prototype), which was developed for home use and entertainment. As SDR-4XII is developed for home use, it is designed to be safe. And the important roles of the safety features depend on the functions of newly developed robotic actuator “ISA-4” (Intelligent Servo Actuator 4th). The actuator contributes SDR-4XIPs motion control and safety management very much. In this paper we introduce the safety functions which are achieved in the development of SDR-4XII and ISA in detail.

This essay excavates the toy magic lantern's largely overlooked significance in the late nineteenth century and explores the toy's role in cultivating children as media spectators. Domestic shows with toy lanterns allowed children to perform as curators, showmen, and audience members. This play naturalized such home entertainment as a commodifiable experience. Promotion of toy lanterns in the periodical The Youth's Companion from the 1880s to 1900s demonstrates the toy's function as an early children's home entertainment medium that has historically been overlooked in favor of analyses of the lantern as a mass medium in institutional contexts.

- Abstract
In this paper, we focus on integration of television program with Web contents. In the near future, these media will have similar features and the boundaries between them will become increasingly blurred, but nowadays both media are different enough to require noteworthy modifications in their respective computing models. We propose a first step towards their fusion, merging their features without forcing or changing their own structure. Starting from the idea that the integration of Internet and TV contents implies that the "digital objects" could migrate between the two devices, we developed the concept of enhanced remote control. We present a setopbox prototype capable of controlling the TV set, the media systems, and that additionally will enable the linking from television programs into the Web.

In this paper, the implementation of a digital signal processor (DSP) based Internet protocol set-top box for home entertainment networks is described. The main functional blocks are the MPEG-2 transport stream demultiplexer, the audio and video decoders and the audio and video display management modules (with on-screen display capabilities). All blocks have been built into a single low-cost DSP to allow multi-format operation in the future. A prototype has been designed and fully tested in a real environment.
