The in-plane thermal conductivity $k$ of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic monolayer cuprate Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ is studied. Analysis of the unusual temperature dependence of $k$ reveals that at low temperatures the heat is carried by phonons, whereas at high temperatures magnetic excitations contribute significantly. Comparison with other insulating layered cuprates suggests that a large magnetic contribution to the thermal conductivity is an intrinsic property of these materials., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures included, submitted to Phys. We explore the effects of noncommuting applied fields on the ground-state ordering of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 XY-like antiferromagnet Cs2CoCl4 using single-crystal neutron diffraction. In zero field interchain couplings cause long-range order below T_N=217(5) mK with chains ordered antiferromagnetically along their length and moments confined to the (b,c) plane. Magnetic fields applied at an angle to the XY planes are found to initially stabilize the order by promoting a spin-flop phase with an increased perpendicular antiferromagnetic moment. In higher fields the antiferromagnetic order becomes unstable and a transition occurs to a phase with no long-range order in the (b,c) plane, proposed to be a spin liquid phase that arises when the quantum fluctuations induced by the noncommuting field become strong enough to overcome ordering tendencies. Magnetization measurements confirm that saturation occurs at much higher fields and that the proposed spin-liquid state exists in the region 2.10 < H_SL < 2.52 T || a. We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound for $x=0.8$ and $x=0.85$. At T=300 K both samples are paramagnetic with crystallographic symmetry $Pnma$. At low temperatures they undergo a monoclinic distortion from orthorhombic $Pnma$-type structure with $a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$ to a monoclinic structure with ($a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$, $\beta=90+\epsilon\sim 91.4^{\rm o}$) and $P2_1/m$ space group below $T_N$. The onset of the structural transformation coincides with the development of the $C$-type long range antiferromagnetic order with propagation vector ${\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2})$. The monoclinic unit cell allowed us to determine the direction of the Mn magnetic moment with respect to the crystallographic axes: it is perpendicular to the propagation vector, ${\bf m}\perp {\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2})$. The amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment at $T=1.6$ K is found to be $2.53(2)$ and $2.47(2)\mu_{B}$ for $x=0.8$ and 0.85, respectively., Comment: In press (Phys. Rev B 01 Feb 2002)

In the low dimensional spin systems $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ and $CuGeO_3$ the thermal conductivities along different crystal directions show pronounced double-peak structures and strongly depend on magnetic fields. For $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ the experimental data can be described by a purely phononic heat current and resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations. A similar effect seems to be important in $CuGeO_3$, too but, in addition, a magnetic contribution to the heat transport may be present., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; appears in the proceedings of the SCES2001 (Physica B)

The quark-molecular-dynamics model is used to study microscopically the dynamics of the coloured quark phase and the subsequent hadron formation in relativistic S+Au collisions at the CERN-SPS. Particle spectra and hadron ratios are compared to both data and the results of hadronic transport calculations. Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ are presented. In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations., Comment: a bit more than 4 pages, 2 figures included; minor changes to improve the clarity of the presentation

A microscopic model of deconfined matter based on color interactions between semi-classical quarks is studied. A hadronization mechanism is imposed to examine the properties and the disassembly of a thermalized quark plasma and to investigate the possible existence of a phase transition from quark matter to hadron matter., Comment: Submitted to Phys. We investigate the hadronic cooling of a quark droplet within a microscopic model. The color flux tube approach is used to describe the hadronization of the quark phase. The model reproduces experimental particle ratios equally well compared to a static thermal hadronic source. Furthermore, the dynamics of the decomposition of a quark-gluon plasma is investigated and time dependent particle ratios are found., Comment: Proceedings to the memory of J. M. The assumption of local equilibrium in relativistic heavy ion collisions at energies from 10.7 AGeV (AGS) up to 160 AGeV (SPS) is checked in the microscopic transport model. Dynamical calculations performed for a central cell in the reaction are compared to the predictions of the thermal statistical model. We find that kinetic, thermal and chemical equilibration of the expanding hadronic matter are nearly approached late in central collisions at AGS energy for $t \geq 10$ fm/$c$ in a central cell. At these times the equation of state may be approximated by a simple dependence $P \cong (0.12-0.15) \epsilon$. Increasing deviations of the yields and the energy spectra of hadrons from statistical model values are observed for increasing energy, 40 AGeV and 160 AGeV. These violations of local equilibrium indicate that a fully equilibrated state is not reached, not even in the central cell of heavy ion collisions at energies above 10 AGeV. Nonequilibrium models (three-fluid hydrodynamics, UrQMD, and quark molecular dynamics) are used to discuss the uniqueness of often proposed experimental signatures for quark matter formation in relativistic heavy ion collisions from the SPS via RHIC to LHC. It is demonstrated that these models -- although they do treat the most interesting early phase of the collisions quite differently (thermalizing QGP vs. coherent color fields with virtual particles) -- all yield a reasonable agreement with a large variety of the available heavy ion data. Hadron/hyperon yields, including $J/\Psi$ meson production/suppression, strange matter formation, dileptons, and directed flow (bounce-off and squeeze-out) are investigated. Observations of interesting phenomena in dense matter are reported. However, we emphasize the need for systematic future measurements to search for simultaneous irregularities in the excitation functions of several observables in order to come close to pinning the properties of hot, dense QCD matter from data. We introduce a transport approach which combines partonic and hadronic degrees of freedom on an equal footing and discuss the resulting reaction dynamics. The initial parton dynamics is modeled in the framework of the parton cascade model, hadronization is performed via a cluster hadronization model and configuration space coalescence, and the hadronic phase is described by a microscopic hadronic transport approach. The resulting reaction dynamics indicates a strong influence of hadronic rescattering on the space-time pattern of hadronic freeze-out and on the shape of transverse mass spectra. Freeze-out times and transverse radii increase by factors of 2 - 3 depending on the hadron species., Comment: 10 pages, 4 eps figures included

Threshold measurements of the associated strangeness production reactions pp --> p K(+) Lambda and pp --> p K(+) Sigma(0) are presented. Although slight differences in the shapes of the excitation functions are observed, the most remarkable feature of the data is that at the same excess energy the total cross section for the Sigma(0) production appears to be about a factor of 28 smaller than the one for the Lambda particle. It is concluded that strong Sigma(0)-p final state interactions, and in particular the Sigma-N --> Lambda-p conversion reaction, are the likely cause of the depletion for the yield in the Sigma signal. Thermodynamical variables and their time evolution are studied for central relativistic heavy ion collisions from 10.7 to 160 AGeV in the microscopic Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD). The UrQMD model exhibits drastic deviations from equilibrium during the early high density phase of the collision. Local thermal and chemical equilibration of the hadronic matter seems to be established only at later stages of the quasi- isentropic expansion in the central reaction cell with volume 125 fm$^{3}$. distributions at all collision energies for $t\geq 10 fm/c$ with a unique Baryon energy spectra in this cell are approximately reproduced by Boltzmann rapidly dropping temperature. At these times the equation of state has a simple form: $P \cong (0.12-0.15) \epsilon$. At 160 AGeV the strong deviation from chemical equilibrium is found for mesons, especially for pions, even at the late stage of the reaction. Local kinetic and chemical equilibration is studied for Au+Au collisions at 10.7 AGeV in the microscopic Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD). The UrQMD model exhibits dramatic deviations from equilibrium during the high density phase of the collision. Thermal and chemical equilibration of the hadronic matter seems to be established in the later stages during a quasi-isentropic expansion, observed in the central reaction cell ($S/A=S/A=s/\rho_B ~\cong~$ 12). At latest stages of the reactions (of order of 10 fm/c) the hadron energy spectra in the cell are nicely reproduced by Boltzmann distributions with a common rapidly dropping temperature. Hadron yields change drastically and at the late expansion stage follow closely those of an ideal gas statistical model. The detailed comparison with the UrQMD box calculations for infinite equilibrated matter is done. It also shows that the system in the central zone reaches the equilibrium at late stages of the reaction. The equation of state seems to be simple at late times: $P\cong0.12\epsilon$ which coincides with Shuryak predictions for the resonance gas. The contribution of the strange particles into the total energy density of the system in the central region of the reaction seems to be of order of 1-3 % (strange particle density in the central zone is negligibly small e.g. $\rho_S=0.008$). In this paper, the concepts of microscopic transport theory are introduced and the features and shortcomings of the most commonly used ansatzes are discussed. In particular, the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport model is described in great detail. Based on the same principles as QMD and RQMD, it incorporates a vastly extended collision term with full baryon-antibaryon symmetry, 55 baryon and 32 meson species. Isospin is explicitly treated for all hadrons. The range of applicability stretches from $E_{lab}< 100$ MeV/nucleon up to $E_{lab}> 200$ GeV/nucleon, allowing for a consistent calculation of excitation functions from the intermediate energy domain up to ultrarelativistic energies. Constraints on the spin-averaged $\Lambda p$ scattering length and effective range have been obtained from measurements of the $pp\to pK^+\Lambda$ reaction close to the production threshold by comparing model phase-space Dalitz plot occupations with experimental ones. The data fix well the position of the virtual bound state in the $\Lambda p$ system. Combining this with information from elastic $\Lambda p$ scattering measurements at slightly higher energies, together with the fact that the hyperdeuteron is not bound, leads to a new determination of the low energy $\Lambda p$ scattering parameters., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures
