Abstract

Large area electrical system breakdowns (blackouts) cause economic losses and restoration is a major challenge for the transmission system operator. The precise situation cannot be predicted because it is not known in advance which particular thermal power plant might manage to switch into house load operation and which neighbouring system survived, thus being strong enough to support restoration. Due to these huge variances it is difficult to develop a precise restoration path in advance. Today decentralised generators based on wind, PV and biogas do not contribute to restoration processes. The functionality with which they could support it is still not known. Planning and analysis of restoration strategies is usually performed by the simulation of large electrical systems because experiments can rarely be conducted at the system. These simulations require dynamic mathematical models which represent the functions of all generators being involved. An analysis of historical blackouts and the causes that have brought upon the situation are presented, followed by some potential functions that wind energy generators could provide to system restoration, as well as results of analysis of the interactions between wind energy generators and thermal power plants during the process.

111. Effect of sodium loading/depletion on renal oxygenation in young normotensive and hypertensive men

Abstract

The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of sodium intake on renal tissue oxygenation in humans. To this purpose we measured renal hemodynamics renal sodium handling and renal oxygenation in normotensive (NT) and hypertensive (HT) subjects after 1 week of a high sodium and 1 week of a low sodium diet. Renal oxygenation was measured using blood oxygen level dependent magnetic resonance. Tissue oxygenation was determined by the measurement of R2 maps on 4 coronal slices covering both kidneys. The mean R2 values in the medulla and cortex were calculated with a low R2 indicating a high tissue oxygenation. Ten male NT (mean age: 26.5+/ 7.4 years) and 8 matched HT subjects (mean age: 28.8+/ 5.7 years) were studied. Cortical R2 was not different under the 2 conditions of salt intake. Abstract

Few-fs electron bunches from laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) can efficiently drive plasma wakefields (PWFs), as shown by their propagation through underdense plasma in two experiments. A strong and density-insensitive deceleration of the bunches has been observed in 2 mm of 1018 cm−3 density plasma with 5.1 GV=m average gradient, which is attributed to a self-driven PWF. This observation implies that the physics of PWFs, usually relying on large-scale rf accelerators as drivers, can be studied by tabletop LWFA electron sources.

Abstract

The resilience of tropical corals to ocean acidification depends on their ability to regulate the pH within their calcifying fluid (pHcf). Recent work suggests pHcf homeostasis under short-term exposure to pCO2 conditions predicted for 2100, but it is still unclear if pHcf homeostasis can be maintained throughout a corals lifetime. At CO2 seeps in Papua New Guinea, massive Porites corals have grown along a natural seawater pH gradient for decades. This natural gradient, ranging from pH 8.1–7.4, provides an ideal platform to determine corals’ pHcf (using boron isotopes). Porites maintained a similar pHcf (~8.24) at both a control (pH 8.1) and seep-influenced site (pH 7.9). Internal pHcf was slightly reduced (8.12) at seawater pH 7.6, and decreased to 7.94 at a site with a seawater pH of 7.4. A growth response model based on pHcf mirrors the observed distribution patterns of this species in the field. We suggest Porites has the capacity to acclimate after long-time exposure to end-of-century reduced seawater pH conditions and that strong control over pHcf represents a key mechanism to persist in future oceans. Only beyond end-of-century pCO2 conditions do they face their current physiological limit of pH homeostasis and pHcf begins to decrease.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: Apixaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor administered in fixed doses, may simplify the treatment of venous thromboembolism. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind study, we compared apixaban (at a dose of 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, followed by 5 mg twice daily for 6 months) with conventional therapy (subcutaneous enoxaparin, followed by warfarin) in 5395 patients with acute venous thromboembolism. The primary efficacy outcome was recurrent symptomatic venous thromboembolism or death related to venous thromboembolism. The principal safety outcomes were major bleeding alone and major bleeding plus clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding. RESULTS: The primary efficacy outcome occurred in 59 of 2609 patients (2.3%) in the apixaban group, as compared with 71 of 2635 (2.7%) in the conventional-therapy group (relative risk, 0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.60 to 1.18; difference in risk [apixaban minus conventional therapy], -0.4 percentage points; 95% CI, -1.3 to 0.4). Abstract

This paper is rooted in the research field of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), where the debate is lively around whether and to what extent structuring the interactions among students enhances the effectiveness of the collaborative process. The paper discusses two different design approaches to structuring collaboration: the former approach, adopted in the context of an Italian online course, is based on the use of a set of collaborative techniques, while in the latter, proposed in a German context, collaboration scripts are used to guide students step-by-step. The study describes and then compares the strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches. What can be learned from the two experiences? Is there any possibility - and with what advantages - of integrating the two approaches, so as to gain from both?
