The development of more efficient friction layers for triboelectric nanogenerators is a complex task, requiring a careful balance of various material properties such as morphology, surface roughness, dielectric constant, and surface potential. In this study, we thoroughly investigated the use of cellulose acetate modified with different concentrations of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to enhance energy harvesting for the TENG. The results indicate that the roughness degree is influenced by the homogeneous degree/aggregation level of doping agents in cellulose acetate membranes, leading to the best performance of open circuit voltage of 282.8 V, short-circuit current of 3.42 µA, and power density of 60 µW/cm2 for ZnO-doped cellulose acetate membranes.

Abstract The development of supporting materials based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) impregnated with iron nanoparticles via a sustainable and green synthesis employing plant extract of Punica granatum L. leaves was carried out for the iron nanoparticle modification and the following impregnation into the carbon nanotubes composites (CNT-Fe) that were also coated with polypyrrole (CNT-Fe + PPy) for use as electrode for supercapacitor and triboelectric nanogenerators. The electrochemical characterization of the materials by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) assays revealed that the CNT-Fe + PPy gave rise to better performance due to the association of double-layer capacitance behavior of carbon derivative in association with the pseudocapacitance contribution of PPy resulting in an areal capacitance value 202 mF/ cm2 for the overall composite. In terms of the application of electrodes in triboelectric nanogenerators, the best performance for the composite of CNT-Fe + PPy was 60 V for output voltage and power density of 6 μW/cm2. The integrated system showed that the supercapacitors can be charged directly by the nanogenerator from 0 to 42 mV in 300 s. The successful green synthesis of iron nanoparticles on CNT and further PPy coating provides a feasible method for the design and synthesis of high-performance SCs and TENGs electrode materials. This work provides a systematic approach that moves the research front forward by generating data that underpins further research in self-powered electronic devices.

ABSTRACT: Surface contamination by pathogenic and deteriorating microorganisms is a constant concern in the food industry. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), produced using the essential oil of Lippia origanoides Kunth and ethanolic extract of Hymenaea martiana Hayne, against bacteria used in milk processing. For this, AgNPs were synthesized and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated for minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations, time-kill, interference on the biofilm, and application on the surfaces of different materials. AgNPs showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 33591), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Choleraesuis (ATCC 10708), Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp.,andPseudomonas aeruginosa,and interfered with biofilm formation more than with consolidated biofilms. A 1hour period was sufficient to reduce the bacterial cells, whereas a Minimum Duration for Killing (MDK) of 99% was reached after approximately 30 min. AgNPs were effective against bacteria attached to stainless steel and polyethylene, but ineffective on tile surfaces. Thus, owing to the growing microbial resistance and the need to develop new products based on the concepts of green chemistry, these AgNPs are presented as a new possibility for cleaning processes in the food industry.

The development of alternative (and free-of-antibiotics) antibacterial and antibiofilm agents is an important strategy to circumvent the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Herein, we explore the production of mixed oxides by incorporating silver nanoparticles in titanium dioxide as a silver concentration-dependent antibacterial agent that is further incorporated in Tilapia fish skin (a promising prototype of xenograft), integrating the antibacterial activity of mixed oxide into the intrinsic properties of Tilapia skin. The antibiofilm activity of samples prepared with high concentrations of silver (10 wt% of precursor AgNO3) has been considered a good antibiofilm response. The influence of silver content is also observed with respect to the minimum bactericidal concentration, which is reduced to 3.13 mg/mL with a characteristic kill time in the order of 30 min that is associated with antibiofilm activity in biofilm-forming strains of Staphylococcus aureus. These results indicate that modified Tilapia fish skin acquires antibacterial behavior and can be explored for xenografts with prospective applications in the light-dependent actuation of TiO2-based compounds.

The global need for high energy density and performing rechargeable batteries has led to the development of high-capacity silicon-based anode materials to meet the energy demands imposed to electrify plug-in vehicles to curtail carbon emissions by 2035. Unfortunately, the high theoretical capacity (4200 mA h g−1) of silicon by (de-)alloy mechanism is limited by its severe volume changes (ΔV ∼ 200% − 400%) during cycling for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), while for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) remain uncertain, and hence, compositing with carbons (C@Si) represent a promising strategy to enable the aforementioned practical application. The present review outlines the recent progress of biomass-derived Si-carbon composite (C@Si) anodes for LIBs and NIBs. In this perspective, we present different types of biomass precursors, silicon sources, and compositing strategies, and how these impact on the C@Si physicochemical properties and their electrochemical performance are discussed.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido à luz das ideias do físico Richard Feynman, com o intuito de analisar o Ensino de Física no Ensino Médio, no século XXI, com foco na importância da contextualização com a realidade territorial em que o aluno se insere. Para tanto, a pesquisa foi realizada por meio da observação de aulas remotas nos meses de maio a dezembro de 2021 e entrevista com professores de Física, de Petrolina-PE. Evidenciou-se a necessidade de que os docentes possam rever suas práticas, aplicarem a contextualização, utilizarem experimentos e de evitarem atividades de memorização, reafirmando a importância de se construir práticas contextualizadas como a base para um ensino de Física que possibilite ao aluno compreender a aplicação dos conceitos, assim como, dos fenômenos dentro do cotidiano e amplie o pensar científico.

RESUMO: Considerando a necessidade de terapias alternativas para a mastite bovina, uma inflamação, normalmente de causa infecciosa, de alta prevalência e de alto impacto econômico nas fazendas leiteiras, avaliou-se a eficácia antimicrobiana, in vivo, de uma formulação intramamária à base de polipirrol (PPy) solúvel, um polímero condutor promissor para aplicações biomédicas, especialmente como potente antibacteriano. Neste ensaio, quartos mamários de vacas holandesas sadias (n = 8) foram inoculados com Staphylococcus aureus e tratados, por via intramamária, com formulação experimental à base de PPy solúvel (5%) e com formulação comercial à base de sulfato de gentamicina. O efeito desses tratamentos foi avaliado com a realização de lactoculturas, da Contagem Bacteriana Total (TBC), da Contagem de Células Somáticas (SCC) e da análise da composição do leite das amostras obtidas de quartos mamários, em sete momentos experimentais. Avaliação hematológica dos animais também foi realizada. A aplicação intramamária de três doses da formulação experimental à base de PPy solúvel resultou em maiores log/mL da TBC e da SCC quando comparadas ao grupo controle positivo e ao grupo que recebeu sulfato de gentamicina. A administração da formulação experimental não induziu alterações na composição do leite e nos parâmetros hematológicos. Alguns fatores farmacocinéticos e farmacodinâmicos do PPy solúvel podem ser atribuídos a ineficácia antimicrobiana da pomada experimental. Outras pesquisas devem ser realizados em prol do desenvolvimento de formulações que permitam a atuação antibacteriana do PPy solúvel no ambiente intramamário de vacas leiteiras.

Abstract Melatonin (MLT) reportedly reduces side effects associated with certain antineoplastic agents. Accordingly, we investigated the effect of MLT on cisplatin (CP)-induced gastric emptying (GE) delay. Mice were intraperitoneally pretreated with vehicle (ethanol 5%; control group), MLT (5, 10, or 20 mg/kg), or N-acetylcysteine (NAC; 150 mg/kg), followed by CP treatment (5 mg/kg). Pharmacological modulation was analyzed using relevant receptor antagonists (luzindole: non-selective MT1/MT2 antagonist; 5 mg/kg or 4-P-PDOT: selective MT2 antagonist; 4 mg/kg) before treatment with MLT plus CP. All treatments were performed once daily for three days. GE was assessed using phenol red. Gut morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Compared with the control, CP decreased GE. Pretreatment with NAC and MLT (5 and 10 mg/kg) did not prevent CP-induced gastric dysmotility; however, pretreatment with 20 mg/kg MLT prevented this effect. In addition, luzindole and 4-P-PDOT suppressed MLT-mediated gastroprotection against cytotoxic effects of CP. CP caused degeneration of the gut mucosa, which was attenuated by MLT treatment. Thus, 20 mg/kg MLT prevented the GE delay and decreased CP-induced adverse effects on the gut mucosa. In addition, the gastroprotective activity was mediated via the MT2 receptor.

The synthesis of high-performance carbon-based materials from biomass residues for electrodes has been considered a challenge to achieve in supercapacitor-based production. In this work, activated biochar has been prepared as the active electrode material for supercapacitors (SCs), and an effective method has been explored to boost its capacitive performance by employing polypyrrole (PPy) as a biochar dopant. The results for physicochemical characterization data have demonstrated that PPy doping affects the biochar morphology, specific surface area, pore structure, and incorporation of surface functionalities on modified biochar. Biochar-PPy exhibited a surface area of 87 m2 g−1, while pristine biochar exhibited 1052 m2 g−1. The SCs were assembled employing two electrodes sandwiched with PVA solid-state film electrolyte as a separator. The device was characterized by standard electrochemical assays that indicated an improvement of 34% in areal capacitance. The wood electrodes delivered high areal capacitances of 282 and 370 mF cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2, for pure biochar and biochar doped with PPy, respectively, with typical retention in the capacitive response of 72% at the end of 1000 cycles of operation of the supercapacitor at high current density, indicating that biochar-PPy-based electrode devices exhibited a higher energy density when compared to pure biochar devices.

Theranostics combines therapeutic and imaging diagnostic techniques that are extremely dependent on the action of imaging agent, transporter of therapeutic molecules, and specific target ligand, in which fluorescent probes can act as diagnostic agents. In particular, naphthoimidazoles are potential bioactive heterocycle compounds to be used in several biomedical applications. With this aim, a group of seven naphth[1,2-d]imidazole compounds were synthesized from β-lapachone. Their optical properties and their cytotoxic activity against cancer cells and their compounds were evaluated and confirmed promising values for molar absorptivity coefficients (on the order of 103 to 104), intense fluorescence emissions in the blue region, and large Stokes shifts (20–103 nm). Furthermore, the probes were also selective for analyzed cancer cells (leukemic cells (HL-60). The naphth[1,2-d]imidazoles showed IC50 between 8.71 and 29.92 μM against HL-60 cells. For HCT-116 cells, values for IC50 between 21.12 and 62.11 μM were observed. The selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells and the fluorescence of the synthesized naphth[1,2-d]imidazoles are promising responses that make possible the application of these components in antitumor theranostic systems.

The development of sustainable, safe, low-cost, high energy and density power-density energy storage devices is most needed to electrify our modern needs to reach a carbon-neutral society by ~2050. Batteries are the backbones of future sustainable energy sources for both stationary off-grid and mobile plug-in electric vehicle applications. Biomass-derived carbon materials are extensively researched as efficient and sustainable electrode/anode candidates for lithium/sodium-ion chemistries due to their well-developed tailored textures (closed pores and defects) and large microcrystalline interlayer spacing and therefore opens-up their potential applications in sustainable potassium and aluminum batteries. The main purpose of this perspective is to brief the use of biomass residues for the preparation of carbon electrodes for potassium and aluminum batteries annexed to the biomass-derived carbon physicochemical structures and their aligned electrochemical properties. In addition, we presented an outlook as well as some challenges faced in this promising area of research. We believe that this review enlightens the readers with useful insights and a reasonable understanding of issues and challenges faced in the preparation, physicochemical properties and application of biomass-derived carbon materials as anodes and cathode candidates for potassium and aluminum batteries, respectively. In addition, this review can further help material scientists to seek out novel electrode materials from different types of biomasses, which opens up new avenues in the fabrication/development of next-generation sustainable and high-energy density batteries.

Background: Bothropic venoms cause intense local damage, pain, edema, and myonecrosis. Morus nigra L. (Moraceae) has several uses in folk medicine and can be a promising candidate for the treatment of several inflammatory disorders. Hypothesis/Purpose: The present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of the ethanolic extract of Morus nigra L. (Mn-EtOH) on paw lesions induced by Bothrops jararacussu snake venom (BjcuV) in mice. Methods: UV–vis absorption of BjcuV was evaluated. A phytochemical study was performed, which led to the isolation and characterization of three compounds. These compounds were identified using spectrometric methods, namely LC–MS and NMR (1D and 2D), followed by the validation of their spectra with the data available in the literature. Further, the flavonoids i.e. rutin and quercetin (chemical markers of M. nigra), Mn-EtOH or Mn-EtOH-encapsulated electrospun fibers of Eudragit L100 (FB/Mn-EtOH), and Mn-EtOH-encapsulated microparticles of Eudragit L100 (MP/Mn-EtOH) were evaluated, in paw edema test induced by BjcuV. Results: UV–vis spectra showed the presence of phospholipases A2 as component of BjcuV. The chemical examination resulted in the isolation of β-sitosterol, quercetin-3-O-glucopyranoside, and kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside. Mn-EtOH, FB/Mn-EtOH, MP/Mn-EtOH, rutin, and quercetin reduced the local edema induced by BjcuV. The Mn-EtOH also prevented edema provoked by serotonin and bradykinin. Moreover, it reduced paw edema and peritoneal leukocyte infiltration induced by carrageenan, and decreased the mechanical hypernociception of BjcuV. Mn-EtOH exerted anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects, possibly by the inhibition of leukocyte migration and the modulation of serotonin and bradykinin actions. This anti-inflammatory activity was maintained even upon incorporation of the M. nigra extract into the drug delivery systems (i.e., Mn-EtOH-encapsulated FBs and MPs of Eudragit L100). Conclusion: These results reinforce the therapeutic potential of M. nigra in the treatment of inflammatory conditions, in addition to, its role as a complementary treatment of snakebites.

Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic disease that affects small ruminants and causes economic losses in the associated breeding system. The causative agent of CLA is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, a Gram-positive bacterium that exhibits tropism for external and internal lymph nodes and induces abscess formation in the host. Bacterial communities often produce a biofilm matrix that serves various functions, including protection against hostile environmental conditions, antibiotics, and the host immune response. Although biofilm formation has been reported for C. pseudotuberculosis, not all strains demonstrate this property in culture. In this work, we report the first comparative proteomic analysis of one biofilm-forming (CAPJ4) and one biofilm-non-forming strain (CAP3W) of C. pseudotuberculosis isolated from goats. Bacterial whole cell protein extracts were obtained for mass spectrometry analyses. Using LC-MS/MS, our studies reveal three and four proteins exclusively found in the CAPJ4 and CAP3W proteome, respectively. In addition, label-free quantitative analysis identified 40 proteins showing at-least 2-fold higher values in CAPJ4 compared CAP3W proteome Notably, CAPJ4 differentially synthesized the penicillin-binding protein, which participates in the formation of peptidoglycans. CAPJ4 also exhibited upregulation of N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase and galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase, which are involved in biofilm formation and exopolysaccharide biosynthesis. Here, we demonstrate that biofilm formation in C. pseudotuberculosis is likely associated with specific proteins, some of which were previously shown to be associated with virulence and biofilm formation in other organisms. Our findings may drive studies related to the bacterial mechanisms involved in the biofilm formation, in addition to providing targets for the treatment of CLA.

Abstract The development of polypyrrole-based nanocomposites as alternative antibacterial agents represents a promising strategy to be applied against the prevailing multi-resistant bacteria. Herein, it is reported the most recent development of antibacterial materials based on the combination of polypyrrole and different fillers (metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and polysaccharides) and strategies to improve their action (such as light and electrical stimulus). The synergistic interaction of electrostatic forces provided by charged polypyrrole combined with the permeation of nanoparticles through the cell wall favors the leakage of cytoplasmic components and reinforces the antibacterial activity of the resulting material, observed in all-organic composites of polypyrrole and chitosan that reached superior performance against Escherichia coli (108 CFU) or metal-polymer composites (polypyrrole-palladium) with an outstanding performance against different types of bacteria. The development of binary and ternary composites is explored to potentialize the antibacterial synergy of components.

Abstract Some species of Lactobacillus have demonstrated beneficial health effects being applied in the production of food supplements. Thus, the incorporation of viable cells as encapsulated probiotics represents an essential condition to be considered in new strategies for the controlled release of microorganisms. Herein, the massive encapsulation of Lactobacillus paracasei is provided by the use of alternative electrospinning technique. Is spite of the high voltage required for the production of fibers, a high density of viable cells is observed into the polymeric electrospun web, allowing the controlled release at targeted pH (characteristic of Eudragit® L100 polymer support). The reported procedure circumvents typical drawbacks of degradation of microorganisms under adverse conditions (storage, package and low pH) and preserves its biologic action after complete release from polymer fibers.

Preparing sustainable and highly efficient biochars as electrodes remains a challenge for building green energy storage devices. In this study, efficient carbon electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared via a facile and sustainable single-step pyrolysis method using spruce bark as a biomass precursor. Herein, biochars activated by KOH and ZnCl2 are explored as templates to be applied to prepare electrodes for supercapacitors. The physical and chemical properties of biochars for application as supercapacitors electrodes were strongly affected by factors such as the nature of the activators and the meso/microporosity, which is a critical condition that affects the internal resistance and diffusive conditions for the charge accumulation process in a real supercapacitor. Results confirmed a lower internal resistance and higher phase angle for devices prepared with ZnCl2 in association with a higher mesoporosity degree and distribution of Zn residues into the matrix. The ZnCl2-activated biochar electrodes’ areal capacitance reached values of 342 mF cm−2 due to the interaction of electrical double-layer capacitance/pseudocapacitance mechanisms in a matrix that favors hydrophilic interactions and the permeation of electrolytes into the pores. The results obtained in this work strongly suggest that the spruce bark can be considered a high-efficiency precursor for biobased electrode preparation to be employed in SCs.

Cheap and efficient carbon electrodes (CEs) for energy storage systems (ESS) such as supercapacitors (SCs) and batteries are an increasing priority issue, among other things, due to a globally increasing share of intermittent electricity production (solar and wind) and electrification of transport. The increasing consumption of portable and non-portable electronic devices justifies research that enables environmentally and economically sustainable production (materials, processing techniques, and product design) of products with a high electrochemical performance at an acceptable cost. Among all the currently explored CEs materials, biomass-based activated carbons (AC) present enormous potential due to their availability and low-cost, easy processing methods, physicochemical stability, and methods for self-doping. Nitrogen doping methods in CEs for SCs have been demonstrated to enhance its conductivities, surface wettability, and induced pseudocapacitance effect, thereby delivering improved energy/power densities with versatile properties. Herein, a short review is presented, focusing on the different types of natural carbon sources for preparing CEs towards the fabrication of SCs with high electrochemical performance. The influences of ACs’ pore characteristics (micro and mesoporosity) and nitrogen doping on the overall electrochemical performance (EP) are addressed.

Some recent developments in the preparation of biomass carbon electrodes (CEs) using various biomass residues for application in energy storage devices, such as batteries and supercapacitors, are presented in this work. The application of biomass residues as the primary precursor for the production of CEs has been increasing over the last years due to it being a renewable source with comparably low processing cost, providing prerequisites for a process that is economically and technically sustainable. Electrochemical energy storage technology is key to the sustainable development of autonomous and wearable electronic devices. This article highlights the application of various types of biomass in the production of CEs by using different types of pyrolysis and experimental conditions and denotes some possible effects on their final characteristics. An overview is provided on the use of different biomass types for the synthesis of CEs with efficient electrochemical properties for batteries and supercapacitors. This review showed that, from different biomass residues, it is possible to obtain CEs with different electrochemical properties and that they can be successfully applied in high-performance batteries and supercapacitors. As the research and development of producing CEs still faces a gap by linking the type and composition of biomass residues with the carbon electrodes’ electrochemical performances in supercapacitor and battery applications, this work tries to diminish this gap. Physical and chemical characteristics of the CEs, such as porosity, chemical composition, and surface functionalities, are reflected in the electrochemical performances. It is expected that this review not only provides the reader with a good overview of using various biomass residues in the energy storage applications, but also highlights some goals and challenges remaining in the future research and development of this topic.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o potencial das soluções de óxido de zinco e de nitrato de prata como alternativa para antissepsia de tetos de bovinos (in situ), considerando a escassez de literatura a respeito do uso destes compostos na profilaxia de mastites. Primeiramente foram realizados ensaios de microdiluição e CBM (Concentração Bactericida Mínima) a fim de verificar a atividade antimicrobiana das soluções de óxido de zinco e de nitrato de prata sobre 30 isolados de Staphylococcus spp., obtidos de casos de mastite. Todos os isolados apresentaram sensibilidade às duas soluções testadas, mas a solução de nitrato de prata apresentou menores valores de CBMs (3,05 a 97,65 μg/mL), quando comparada as CBMs da solução de óxido de zinco (97,65 a 6.250μg/mL). Posteriormente, foram conduzidos os ensaios de antissepsia dos tetos (in situ) através da imersão dos mesmos nas soluções antimicrobianas testadas. Para isso, foram utilizados 40 tetos (n=40) oriundos de vacas abatidas, os quais foram divididos em 4 grupos de 10 tetos, destinados ao teste das solução de óxido de zinco a 3% (30mg/mL), de nitrato e prata 1% (10mg/mL) e seus respectivos controles. Os tetos foram submetidos à contagem de microrganismos mesófilos na superfície dos tetos (UFC/cm2) antes e após a imersão nas soluções testadas. Como resultado, todas as soluções (de óxido de zinco e de nitrato de prata) apresentaram significativa redução de UFC/cm2 até aos 60 minutos após a imersão (M 0’ a M 60’). A solução de nitrato de prata apresentou redução de UFC/cm2 significativamente maior, quando comparado ao grupo testado com solução de óxido de zinco. Tais resultados validam o potencial das soluções de óxido de zinco e nitrato de prata para utilização no pré e pós-dipping em vacas leiteiras.
