Abstract

International audience; The capture cross section of the 139La has been measured relative to 197Au standard at n_TOF. We provide here a short description of the experimental apparatus and of the data analysis procedures. The extracted resonance parameters allow to calculate the fundamental nuclear quantities such as average spacing $\langleD\rangle$ 1=0 = 268 ± 22 eV, $\langleD\rangle$ 1=1 < 250 eV neutron strength functions S0 = (0.79 ± 0.03)×10-4, and S1 = (0.73 ± 0.05)×10-4 and the Maxwellian-averaged capture cross section (MACS). The MACS is particularly useful for the determination of the abundance synthesized by the main component of the s process

Abstract

PACS; International audience; A series of measurements of 237Np fission cross section have been performed at the CERN spallation neutron facility n_TOF which covers a wide energy range from 1 eV up to 250 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with registration efficiency of not less than 97 %. Particular attention was paid to correct the fission cross section with use of 235U standard. Total experimental uncertainties are determined to be at the level of 3%. Analysis of the experimental data in the restricted neutron energy from 5 eV up to 1 MeV showed a systematic deviation from evaluated data (ENDF/B-VI). This discrepancy amounts to up to a factor 3 for resolved resonances in the neutron energy range of 5 eV - 2 KeV, and is in good agreement with some previous experiments. A similar disagreement at the level of 6-7% was found for higher energies around the threshold (En = 300 keV-1 MeV). This energy range is essential for the transmutation of neptunium in ADS or fast reactors. It is concluded that an updated evaluation of nuclear data for 237Np is required

Abstract

Accurate and reliable neutron-capture cross-section data for actinides are necessary for the proper design, safety regulation, and precise performance assessment of transmutation devices such as Fast Critical Reactors or Accelerator Driven Systems. In particular, the neutron-capture cross sections of 237Np, 240Pu, and 243Am play a key role in the design and optimization of a strategy for the Nuclear Waste Transmutation. The listed cross sections have been measured in 2004 at n_TOF with a high accuracy due to a combination of features unique in the world: high instantaneous neutron fluence and excellent energy resolution of the n_TOF facility, innovative Data Acquisition System based on flash ADCs, and the use of a high-performance BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter as a detection device. Abstract

A series of neutron capture cross section measurements of interest to nuclear astrophysics have been recently performed at n_TOF, the neutron spallation source operating at CERN. The low repetition frequency of the proton beam driver, the extremely high instantaneous neutron flux, and the low background conditions in the experimental area are optimal for capture cross section measurements on low-mass or radioactive samples. Abstract

The 151 Sm(n, γ ) 152 Sm cross section, which is important for the interpretation of the 151 Sm branching as an s -process thermometer, was measured from 1 eV up to 1 MeV at the innovative n_TOF facility at CERN. Based on these data, the Maxwellian-averaged cross section at k T = 30 keV is found to be 3100±160 mb. This value can be used to constrain the thermodynamical conditions in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars during He-shell burning.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections of the 90,91,92,94,96Zr have been measured over the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV at the spallation neutron facility n TOF at CERN in 2003. The innovative features of the neutron beam, in particular the high instantaneous flux, the high energy resolution and low background, together with improvements of the neutron sensitivity of the capture detectors make this facility unique for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements with much improved accuracy. The preliminary results of the Zr measurements show capture resonance strengths generally smaller than in previous measurements.

Abstract

We extract energies and widths of the ground states of {sup 5}He and {sup 5}Li from recent single-level {ital R}-matrix fits to the spectra of the {sup 3}H({ital d},{gamma}){sup 5}He and {sup 3}He({ital d},{gamma}){sup 5}Li reactions. The widths obtained differ significantly from the formal {ital R}-matrix values but they are close to those measured as full widths at half maxima of the spectra in various experiments. The energies are somewhat lower than those given by usual estimates of the peak positions. The extracted values are close to the {ital S}-matrix poles calculated previously from the multiterm analyses of the {ital N}-{sup 4}He elastic scattering data. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

The Sm-151(n,gamma)Sm-152 cross section has been measured at the spallation neutron facility n_TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV. The new facility combines excellent resolution in neutron time-of-flight, low repetition rates, and an unsurpassed instantaneous luminosity, resulting in rather favorable signal/background ratios. The Sm-151 cross section is of importance for characterizing neutron capture nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch stars. At a thermal energy of kT=30 keV the Maxwellian averaged cross section of this unstable isotope (t(1/2)=93 yr) was determined to be 3100+/-160 mb, significantly larger than theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We investigate the dependence of the carbon and oxygen production in stars on the 3-alpha rate by varying the energy of the 02+-state of 12C and determine the resulting yields for a selection of low-mass, intermediate-mass, and massive stars. The yields are obtained using modern stellar evolution codes that follow the entire evolution of massive stars, including the supernova explosion, and consider in detail the 3rd dredge-up process during the thermally pulsating asymptotic giant branch of low-mass and intermediate-mass stars. Our results show that the C and O production in massive stars depends strongly on the initial mass, and that it is crucial to follow the entire evolution. A rather strong C production during the He-shell flashes compared to quiescent He burning leads to a lower sensitivity of the C and O production in low-mass and intermediate-mass stars on the 3-alpha-rate than predicted in our previous work. In particular, the C production of intermediate-mass stars seems to have a maximum close to the actual value of the 02+ energy level of 12C., Comment: Language improved; accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

Abstract

Updated stellar rates for the reactions ${}^{56}\mathrm{Ni}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma}{)}^{57}\mathrm{Cu}$ and ${}^{57}\mathrm{Cu}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma}{)}^{58}\mathrm{Zn}$ are calculated by using all available experimental information as well as input data from the nuclear shell model. We calculated Coulomb and Thomas-Ehrmann shifts to obtain the unknown excitation energies and the spin/parity assignments of ${}^{58}\mathrm{Zn}.$ The astrophysical consequences are discussed.

Abstract

The D-wave state component of the neutron-proton bound state in the deuteron is calculated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei - the relativistically covariant quantum field theoretic approach to the description of low-energy nuclear forces. The theoretical value of the fraction of the D-wave state relative to the S-wave state is equal to eta_d = 0.0238. This agrees well with the phenomenological value eta_d = 0.0256(4) quoted by Kamionkowski and Bahcall (ApJ. 420, 884 (1994))., 7 pages, latex, no figures

The probability P(Delta-Delta) to find the Delta-Delta component inside the deuteron, where Delta stands for the Delta(1232) resonance, is calculated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei. Abstract

The 22Ne(n,γ)23Ne(37.2 s), 30Si(n,γ)31Si(2.62 h), and 40Ar(n,γ)41Ar(1.83 h) reactions were investigated at thermonuclear energies. The measurements were carried out at the Karlsruhe and Tubingen Van de Graaff accelerators using activation techniques. Neutrons were produced by the 7Li(p,n) and T(p,n) reactions at reaction threshold to obtain Maxwellian spectra at kT=25 and 52 keV, respectively, and with thin Li-targets at higher proton energies to generate spectra with mean energies at and above 100 keV.

Abstract

Through the triple-alpha process occurring in red giant stars the bulk of the carbon existing in our universe is produced. We calculated the change of the triple-alpha reaction rate for slight variations of the nucleon-nucleon force using a microscopic 12-body model. Stellar model calculations for a low-mass, intermediate-mass and massive star using the different triple-alpha reaction rates obtained with different strengths of the N-N interaction have been performed. Even with a change of 0.4% in the strength of N-N force, carbon-based life appears to be impossible, since all the stars then would produce either almost solely carbon or oxygen, but could not produce both elements., 9 pages with 1 figure. We calculate the cross section and reaction rate of the neutron capture reaction 13C(n,γ)14C which plays an important role in helium burning zones of red giant stars as well as in inhomogeneous big bang models. We consider both the direct capture to bound states and resonant capture to the 143 keV resonance. Interferences between the direct and resonant contributions are taken into account. The resulting total cross section is compared with experimental cross sections.

Abstract

The relativistic field theory model of the deuteron is applied to the calculation of the cross sections of the low-energy radiative neutron-proton capture n + p -> D + gamma and the low-energy two-proton fusion p + p -> D + e^+ + nu_e. For the low-energy radiative neutron-proton capture n + p -> D + gamma our result agrees well with both the experimental data and the potential model prediction. In the case of the two-proton fusion the cross section obtained is 2.9 times as much as that given by the potential approach. The obtained result is discussed in connection with the solar neutrino problem. ERRATUM: We correct the value of the cross section for pp-fusion p + p -> D + e^+ + nu_e. We find a contribution to the astrophysical factor ��S_pp(0) = 2.01 x 10^{-25} (1 +/- 0.30) MeV b which is obtained only due to weak and strong low-energy interactions of the protons and the deuteron when neglecting the Coulomb repulsion between protons in the intermediate state. A simple and model-independent method is described to derive neutron single-particle spectroscopic factors of bound s-wave states in $^{A+1}Z = ^{A}Z \otimes n$ nuclei from neutron scattering lengths. Spectroscopic factors for the nuclei ^{13}C, ^{14}C, ^{16}N, ^{17}O, ^{19}O, ^{23}Ne, ^{37}Ar, and ^{41}Ar are compared to results derived from transfer experiments using the well-known DWBA analysis and to shell model calculations. Abstract

The $({\rm n},\gamma)$--cross sections for neutron--rich oxygen isotopes have been calculated in the direct capture model. The experimental data for ${^{18}{\rm O}}({\rm n},\gamma){^{19}{\rm O}}$ can be reproduced using this model. Compared to previous work the cross section for ${^{19-21}{\rm O}}({\rm n},\gamma){^{20-22}{\rm O}}$ are enhanced considerably by factors between four and 300.

Abstract

An introduction to nucleosynthesis, the creation of the elements in the big bang, in interstellar matter and in stars is given. The two-step process 4He(2n,γ)6He and the reverse photodisintegration 6He(γ,2n)4He involving the halo nucleus 6He could be of importance in the α-process in type-II supernovae. The reaction rates for the above processes are calculated using three-body methods and show an enhancement of more than three orders of magnitude compared to the previous adopted value. Direct-capture calculations give similar values for the above reaction rates. Therefore, this method was also used to calculate the reaction rates of the two-step processes 6He(2n,γ)8He and 9Li(2n,γ)11Li and the reverse photodisintegration of 8He and 11Li that could be also of importance in the α-process.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for $^3$He-$\alpha$ scattering were measured in the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available experimental results for $^3$He $+ \alpha$ and $^3$H $+ \alpha$ scattering were analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials. The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical S-factors of the capture reactions $^3$He$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Be and $^3$H$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Li, and the branching ratios for the transitions into the two final $^7$Be and $^7$Li bound states, respectively. For $^3$He$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Be excellent agreement between calculated and experimental data is obtained. For $^3$H$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Li a $S(0)$ value has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value. Abstract

he CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is well suited to measure low cross sections as those of neutron-induced fission in subactinides. The cross section ratios of (nat)Pb and (209)Bi relative to (235)U and (238)U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV.

In this reply we compare the $R$-matrix analysis by Barker to our potential model calculation, and we discuss the applicability of both models for the extraction of spectroscopic factors.

Abstract

Angular distributions of the 56Fe(p, α)53Mn reaction leading to the three low-lying states in 53Mn are analysed by a fully microscopic DWBA theory. Good fits result, however, the transition strength cannot be reproduced. It is shown that by inclusion of small admixtures of additional proton shell configurations into the calculated wave functions agreement between observed and calculated transition strengths can be obtained. The (p, α) reaction proves to be very sensitive even to small admixtures of configurations due to its coherence properties. In the present analysis constructive interference effects of microscopic form factors belonging to different configurations explain the observed data.

Abstract

The formalism for the microscopic treatment of the three-nucleon transfer (N, α) and (α, N) including the isospin is developed. We derive the expression for the transition amplitudes in zero and finite range of the interaction potential for these reactions. The formalism is then applied to the analysis of the reaction 27Al( p , α)24Mg at Ep = 34.73 MeV. The calculated angular distributions of the cross sections and the analysing powers and also the relative intensities of the cross sections for the transitions to the ground-state band of 24Mg agree fairly well with the experimental data. However, the absolute value of the cross sections are about two orders of magnitude too small, when compared to experiment.

Abstract

DWBA calculations were carried out using one-step and two-step processes that included both sequential transfer and inelastic transfer processes in the three-nucleon (p, α) transfer reaction. A comparison of the theoretical calculations with our previously presented data of the 56Fe(p, α)53Mn and 55Mn(p, α)52Cr reactions at 35 MeV indicates the importance of the two-step (p, α')(α', α) and (p, t)(t, α) process in some weak direct (p, α) transitions. However, for the strong (p, α) transitions in the reaction 92 Zr ( p , α) 89 Y at 35 MeV the two-step contributions are very small.

Abstract

Theoretical and experimental normalisation constants for the three-nucleon transfer reactions are determined. Zero-range and finite-range analyses have been performed. Theoretical cross sections obtained from microscopic DWBA calculations are two to three orders of magnitude smaller than experimental values.

Abstract

The 237Np(n,f) cross sections have been measured at the n-TOF facility relative to the 235U and 238U fission cross sections. The n-TOF spallation neutron source at CERN is characterized by a high intensity flux, an excellent time resolution and an extensive neutron energy range (from eV to GeV). A fast ionization chamber was used as a fission fragment detector with efficiency better than 97%. Preliminary 237Np(n,f) cross sections have been deduced in the energy range from 20 keV to 10 MeV and are found in good agreement with data from literature.

Abstract

We calculate direct neutron capture on 210–228Pb with energy levels and masses taken from two different models. A sharp drop in the cross sections due to the lack of low spin states is seen with RMFT levels but cannot be found with the folded‐Yukawa shell model.

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross-section of 241Am has been measured relative to the standard fission cross-section of 235U between 0.5 and 20MeV. The experiment was performed at the CERN n_TOF facility. Fission fragments were detected by a fast ionization chamber by discriminating against the α- particles from the high radioactivity of the samples. The high instantaneous neutron flux and the low background of the n_TOF facility enabled us to obtain uncertainties of ≈ 5%. With the present results it was possible to resolve discrepancies between previous data sets and to confirm current evaluations, thus providing important information for design studies of future reactors with improved fuel burn-up. © The Author(s) 2013.

Abstract

A small-mass system has been developed for monitoring the flux of neutrons with energy up to 1 MeV at the new time-of-flight facility at CERN, n_TOF. The monitor is based on a thin Mylar foil with a 6Li deposit, placed in the neutron beam, and an array of Silicon detectors, placed outside the beam, for detecting the products of the 6Li(n, alpha)³H reaction. The small amount of material on the beam ensures a minimal perturbation of the flux and minimizes the background related to scattered neutrons. Moreover, a further reduction of the gamma-ray background has been obtained by constructing the scattering chamber hosting the device in carbon fibre. A detailed description of the flux monitor is here presented, together with the characteristics of the device, in terms of efficiency, resolution and induced background. The use of the monitor in the measurement of neutron capture cross-sections at n_TOF is discussed

See paper for full list of authors.; The ratio of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of 243Am and 235U was measured in the energy range from 0.5 to 20 MeV with uncertainties of ≈ 4%. The experiment was performed at the CERN n_TOF facility using a fast ionization chamber. With the good counting statistics that could be achieved thanks to the high instantaneous flux and the low backgrounds, the present results are useful for resolving discrepancies in previous data sets and are important for future reactors with improved fuel burn-up.
