102. How Implementation of Cognitive Assistive Technology in Home-Based Services for Young Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Influences Support Staff's Professional Practice

Abstract

The implementation of technology in home-based services takes place in contextualised socio-material practices negotiated through interactions between a diversity of actors. Prerequisites for succeeding in this process are time and competence, and that use of the technology is experienced as meaningful, for both the support staff and the resident. In this article, we investigate how implementation of cognitive assistive technology (CAT) in home-based services for young adults with intellectual disabilities influences the support staff's professional practice. The participants are eight support staff members, five women and three men. Data were collected through two group interviews, the second one 8 months after the first one. The data were analysed according to a systematic text condensation (STC) approach. Implementation of CAT is a demanding process, revealing different perspectives on professionalism and changing power relations, and entails a new way of working for the support staff.

Abstract

We present an algorithm for reliably and systematically proving the existence of spectral gaps in Hamiltonians with quasicrystalline order, based on numerical calculations on finite domains. We apply this algorithm to prove that the Hofstadter model on the Ammann-Beenker tiling of the plane has spectral gaps at certain energies, and we are able to prove the existence of a spectral gap where previous numerical results were inconclusive. Our algorithm is applicable to more general systems with finite local complexity and eventually finds all gaps, circumventing an earlier no-go theorem regarding the computability of spectral gaps for general Hamiltonians., Comment: paper + supplemental material

Abstract

The sensitivity of parameters in computational science problems is difficult to assess, especially for algorithms with multiple input parameters and diverse outputs. This work seeks to explore sensitivity analysis in the visualization domain, introducing novel techniques for respective visual analyses of parameter sensitivity in multi-dimensional algorithms. First, the sensitivity analysis background is revisited, highlighting the definition of sensitivity analysis and approaches analyzing global and local sensitivity as well as the differences of sensitivity analysis to the more common uncertainty analysis. We introduce and explore parameter sensitivity using visualization techniques from overviews to details on demand, covering the analysis of all aspects of sensitivity in a prototypical implementation. The respective visualization techniques outline the algorithmic in- and outputs including indications, on how sensitive an input is with regard to the outputs. The detailed sensitivity information is communicated through constellation plots for the exploration of input and output spaces. A matrix view is discussed for localized information on the sensitivity of specific outputs to specific inputs. A 3D view provides the link of the parameter sensitivity to the spatial domain, in which the results of the multi-dimensional algorithms are embedded. The proposed sensitivity analysis techniques are implemented and evaluated in a prototype called Sensitivity Explorer. 116. Prospective Mathematics Teachers' Emotions and Identity

Abstract

This article presents an in-depth study illuminating prospective teachers' (PTs) emotions and identity in their development of becoming mathematics teachers. The participants study at a general teacher education programme and have chosen to specialise in mathematics. The theoretical framework in this study is based on Ricoeur's (1992) and Nussbaum's (2001) theories on identity and emotion. The main argument for using this framework is the link between ethics, eudaimonia, value judgment, emotions and identity. These terms are closely related with the question of a person's well-being and flourishing. Through this framework, this study tries to make an innovative approach in the field of mathematics education. The findings indicated an emerging identity towards a reform mathematics teacher when analysing the participants' emotions, well-being and their flourishing.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the conduct of clinical trials globally. Complications may arise from pandemic-related operational challenges such as site closures, travel limitations and interruptions to the supply chain for the investigational product, or from health-related challenges such as COVID-19 infections. Some of these complications lead to unforeseen intercurrent events in the sense that they affect either the interpretation or the existence of the measurements associated with the clinical question of interest. In this article, we demonstrate how the ICH E9(R1) Addendum on estimands and sensitivity analyses provides a rigorous basis to discuss potential pandemic-related trial disruptions and to embed these disruptions in the context of study objectives and design elements. We introduce several hypothetical estimand strategies and review various causal inference and missing data methods, as well as a statistical method that combines unbiased and possibly biased estimators for estimation. To illustrate, we describe the features of a stylized trial, and how it may have been impacted by the pandemic. This stylized trial will then be re-visited by discussing the changes to the estimand and the estimator to account for pandemic disruptions. Finally, we outline considerations for designing future trials in the context of unforeseen disruptions.

Abstract

Large longitudinal studies provide lots of valuable information, especially in medical applications. A problem which must be taken care of in order to utilize their full potential is that of correlation between intra-subject measurements taken at different times. For data in Euclidean space this can be done with hierarchical models, that is, models that consider intra-subject and between-subject variability in two different stages. Nevertheless, data from medical studies often takes values in nonlinear manifolds. Here, as a first step, geodesic hierarchical models have been developed that generalize the linear ansatz by assuming that time-induced intra-subject variations occur along a generalized straight line in the manifold. However, this is often not the case (e.g., periodic motion or processes with saturation). We propose a hierarchical model for manifold-valued data that extends this to include trends along higher-order curves, namely B\'ezier splines in the manifold. To this end, we present a principled way of comparing shape trends in terms of a functional-based Riemannian metric. Remarkably, this metric allows efficient, yet simple computations by virtue of a variational time discretization requiring only the solution of regression problems. Abstract

Our ability to grasp and understand complex phenomena is essentially based on recognizing structures and relating these to each other. For example, any meteorological description of a weather condition and explanation of its evolution recurs to meteorological structures, such as convection and circulation structures, cloud fields and rain fronts. All of these are spatiotemporal structures, defined by time-dependent patterns in the underlying fields. Typically, such a structure is defined by a verbal description that corresponds to the more or less uniform, often somewhat vague mental images of the experts. However, a precise, formal definition of the structures or, more generally, concepts is often desirable, e.g., to enable automated data analysis or the development of phenomenological models. Here, we present a systematic approach and an interactive tool to obtain formal definitions of spatiotemporal structures. The tool enables experts to evaluate and compare different structure definitions on the basis of data sets with time-dependent fields that contain the respective structure. Since structure definitions are typically parameterized, an essential part is to identify parameter ranges that lead to desired structures in all time steps. In addition, it is important to allow a quantitative assessment of the resulting structures simultaneously. We demonstrate the use of the tool by applying it to two meteorological examples: finding structure definitions for vortex cores and center lines of temporarily evolving tropical cyclones. Ideally, structure definitions should be objective and applicable to as many data sets as possible. However, finding such definitions, e.g., for the common atmospheric structures in meteorology, can only be a long-term goal. Abstract

The results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 survey were published in a short report in the autumn of 2023. The report generated a great deal of interest in Norway, mainly due to Norwegian students’ poor performance in mathematics. In this anthology, the authors further analyze of the mathematics results in PISA 2022 and previous PISA surveys. The authors examine various aspects of the students’ mathematical competence, the core content of mathematics as a subject and they ways in which it is taught. In addition, they examine the extent to which Norwegian students have equal opportunities to master mathematics by looking more closely at characteristics of students who do poorly in mathematics and the significance of socio-economic background to student achievement levels. The results are discussed in a Norwegian school context and in light of the PISA 2022 results for the other Nordic countries, the LK20 curriculum and the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other current research. Some of the chapters have a didactic profile aimed at teachers, student teachers and school leaders, while other chapters are aimed more at researchers, politicians and decision-makers., Hovedresultatene fra PISA-undersøkelsen 2022 ble publisert i en kortrapport høsten 2023. Rapporten fikk mye oppmerksomhet, hovedsakelig på grunn av de norske elevenes svake prestasjoner i matematikk. I denne antologien gjør forfatterne videre analyser av matematikkresultatene fra PISA 2022 og tidligere PISA-undersøkelser. Forfatterne undersøker ulike sider ved elevenes matematiske kompetanse, innholdet i matematikkfaget og matematikkundervisningen. I tillegg undersøker de i hvilken grad norske elever har like muligheter til å lykkes i matematikk, ved å se nærmere på hva som kjennetegner de lavtpresterende elevene i matematikk, og hvilken betydning sosioøkonomisk status har for elevenes prestasjoner. Resultatene diskuteres i en norsk skolekontekst og blir sett i lys av resultater for de andre nordiske landene, læreplanen LK20, covid-19-pandemien og annen aktuell forskning. Noen av kapitlene har en didaktisk profil rettet mot lærere, lærerstudenter og skoleledere, mens andre kapitler i større grad er rettet mot forskere, politikere og beslutningstakere.

Abstract

In many applications, geodesic hierarchical models are adequate for the study of temporal observations. We employ such a model derived for manifold-valued data to Kendall's shape space. In particular, instead of the Sasaki metric, we adapt a functional-based metric, which increases the computational efficiency and does not require the implementation of the curvature tensor. We propose the corresponding variational time discretization of geodesics and employ the approach for longitudinal analysis of 2D rat skulls shapes as well as 3D shapes derived from an imaging study on osteoarthritis. 138. Enhancing Teachers' Emotional Awareness through Continuing Professional Development: Mission Possible?

Abstract

In the context of the contemporary emphasis on the school's role in supporting student wellbeing, this qualitative study explored the teachers' experience of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, which focused on enhancing teachers' emotional awareness within the context of everyday life. An implicit assumption in this approach is that student wellbeing can be nurtured (or undermined) through the "everyday" relations of teaching and learning in which emotional experiences are integrated. Focus groups with 22 primary and secondary school teachers in four schools in Norway were carried out, and a thematic analysis was conducted. The findings provide an illustration of how enhancing emotional awareness can strengthen professional competence in ways that can benefit the wellbeing of both teachers and students. The findings might inform a wider debate across national boundaries about the value of prioritising emotional awareness as an aspect of teachers' CPD regarding their role in supporting student wellbeing.

139. 'A Long Way to Get Here and a Long Way to Go': A Case Study on Changing Lunch Meal Practices in a Norwegian Kindergarten

Abstract

This article presents a case study on changing food practices from traditional cold sandwich meals to hot meals in a Norwegian kindergarten. Data were sourced from interviews, complemented by non-participatory video observation and observational notes. Building on Fullan's model for understanding a change process, this paper presents the initiation, implementation, continuation and results of such a change, and identifies three key factors that contributed to the successful change in practices in the case kindergarten. These factors are: (1) shared leadership in the change process; (2) the support for change from the parents; and (3) children's (as change partners) involvement and participation. The conclusion section of the paper discusses the implications of the findings for kindergartens and educators in terms of how to facilitate a locally relevant and context-specific change. In addition, this paper illuminates children's agency and their indispensable roles in the change implementation in particular, and sheds light on the importance of their involvement to increase the likelihood of a successful change.

140. Ecocritical Dialogues in Teacher Education

Abstract

This article argues that revisions of curricula in teacher education, undertaken in response to the UN's Agenda 2030, goal 4.7, and the OECD's The Future of Education and Skills, need to consider new ways of teaching topics related to current environmental issues. Grounded in ecocriticism and dialogic teaching practices, this article promotes ecocritical dialogues, as developed by the research group Nature in Children's Literature and Culture, as one viable teaching approach. Ecocritical dialogues engage with a conceptual figure developed by the group, the NatCul Matrix, which functions as a grid for the discussion of different materials, texts, and practices, in dynamic dialogue with main figures of thought in the environmental discourse. The article further proposes a set of questions as a framework for setting up ecocritical dialogues. Ecocritical dialogues aim to enable student teachers to experience and reflect upon environmentally oriented teaching practices.

Abstract

Objectives: To quantify the number and type of students failing to secure basic needs. Participants: Students attending 22 postsecondary schools in the United States in Fall 2019. Methods: The Adult Food Security Module and part of the #RealCollege Survey were used to measure food and housing insecurity, respectively. Logistic and linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between selected factors and basic needs insecurities. Results: Participants (n = 22,153) were classified as 44.1% and 52.3% food insecure and housing insecure, respectively. Homeless students or those who experienced childhood food insecurity were at the greatest odds of college food insecurity. Year in school was the largest contributor to being housing insecure, with PhD or EdD students being 1,157% more likely to experience housing insecurity compared to freshmen. Conclusions: High prevalence of basic needs insecurities remain. Current campus initiatives may be insufficient, calling for a more holistic approach at the campus, state, and national levels.

142. In and out of Class -- What Is the Meaning for Inclusive Schools? Teachers' Opinions on Push- and Pull-Out in Italy and Norway

Abstract

The research aim of the project presented in this paper is to contribute to an understanding of the meaning of push- and pull-out in inclusive school systems. We ask: How do Italian and Norwegian teachers regard the fact that it is sometimes seen as necessary for some students to spend time out of class? A vignette with short scenarios to stimulate responses was used for teacher interviews in lower secondary schools in Italy and Norway. Situations in two different contexts were designed for the vignette, including a description of some students, their class and the available resources. The main funding is that most teachers' opinions were sensitive to the context, here the way teaching and learning activities were organised. When presented for a traditional teacher-centred class situation (context 1), most of the respondents thought pull-out was a good solution for some students under certain conditions. Presented with the more differentiated and pupil-centred context 2, a clear majority found that the described learning environment would meet the educational and social needs of all learners within class, regardless of disabilities or learning challenges.
