135. Effect of Magma Solidification under High Pressure on Mechanical State of Lithosphere.

Abstract

Plate tectonic activity is closely related to the lithosphere and is the physical source of major geological activities such as earthquakes, but its dynamic mechanism is not clear. This paper will explore the force source mechanism of plate movement by analyzing the influence of magma solidification in a highpressure environment inside the Earth on the mechanical state of the lithosphere. The Earth as a whole is constantly radiating heat into outer space, and its interior is in a state of liquid-solid coexistence under high pressure and high temperature. The solidification process of molten magma has continued since the formation of the Earth, and this liquid-solid transition will result in density changes and latent heat release in the Earth's interior, reducing the pressure and supporting force at the bottom of the rigid lithosphere. We found that the lithosphere is not strong enough to support its dead weight, and any pressure fluctuations at the bottom destabilize its mechanical structure. Due to the constraint of rigid and brittle lithosphere, the solidification of magma under high pressure in the Earth will inevitably lead to the change of the mechanical state of the lithosphere. Under the action of gravity, the interaction between plates intensifies, and local stress accumulation exceeds the strength limit of rocks, leading to fracture in the lithosphere. The accumulated stress is released in the weak zone of the lithosphere through geological activities such as earthquakes and adjusts itself to reach a new mechanical equilibrium. And plate boundaries are the weakest parts of the lithosphere, so there's a lot of seismic activity. Abstract

Plastic deformation of alumina (Al2O3) under high pressure was investigated by observing the shape changes of spherical particles, and the near fully dense transparent bulks were prepared at around 5.5 GPa and 900 °C. Through analyzing the deformation features, densities, and residual micro-strain of the Al2O3 compacts prepared under high pressures and temperatures (2.0-5.5 GPa and 600-1200 °C), the effects of plastic deformation on the sintering behavior of alumina have been demonstrated. Under compression, the microscopic deviatoric stress caused by grain-to-grain contact could initiate the plastic deformation of individual particles, eliminate pores of the polycrystalline samples, and enhance the local atomic diffusion at the grain boundaries, thus produced transparent alumina bulks. Abstract

In order to optimize the structure of anvils, finite element method is used to simulate two kinds of structures, one of which has a support ring but the other one does not. According to the simulated results, it is found that the maximum value of pressure appears at the center of culet when the bevelled angle is about 20°. Comparing the results of these two kinds of structures, we find that the efficiency of pressure transformation for the structure without support ring is larger than that for the structure with support ring. Considering the effect of von Mises stress, two kinds of tungsten carbide opposite anvils have been manufactured with bevelled angle of 10°. The experimental results for these two anvils are in good agreement with the simulation.

Abstract

Pure-phase polycrystalline cadmium tetraphosphide (CdP4) has been successfully synthesized under high pressures in a large volume cubic press, and the pressure-temperature (P-T) formation boundary of CdP4 from the Cd-P binary system has been determined. The equation of state of monoclinic CdP4 has also been evaluated by synchrotron-radiation angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) under quasihydrostatic compression up to 26.4 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell. The ADXRD data yield a bulk modulus B0 = 94 ± 9 GPa with a pressure derivative B0′ = 8.0. The experimental data are discussed and compared to the results of first-principles calculations. Abstract

FENGHUANG diffractometer at CMRR is a neutron diffractometer dedicated for high pressure experiments. After updating the neutron guide and monochromator, now the neutron flux at the sample position can get increased up to 2.84x106 ns--1⋅cm-2. Based on the FENGHUANG diffractometer, comprehensive high pressure devices and techniques have been developed, such as gas cells, piston cylinders cell, clamp cell, PE press (VX4), opposite anvil press (HP3-1500) along with sample heating and cooling system, and the alignment system for high pressure devices. Moreover, with the modified high pressure and high temperature cell assemblies, the pressure can be up to 34 GPa while the temperature reaches 1 500 °C at maximum in the angle-dispersive neutron diffraction. Recently, some scientific research have been performed, like the solubility of NaCl at high pressure, the intergranular strain evolution of HMX, and the pressure-induced polymerization. All these experimental experiences from FENGHUANG diffractometer could not only help to promote the development of high pressure techniques on neutron scattering facilities, but also contribute to the users for their high pressure studies.
